Review Bay Hong - Sydney

Ruben Sanchez
I love this restaurant. We walked in and we got a table without making a booking. I recommend booking in advance though. Food was very good and tasty. The staff was great, very friendly and kind. It is a good Vietnamese restaurant to go for a nice experience.

Most times when you pay a premium for Asian food you usually wonder where that money went. Not here. The excellent food and service and kitschy decor was worth it. They had a full vegan menu to accompany what I imagine is an equally excellent omni menu. We had some deep fried dumplings and "satay" skewers tasty but pricey not sure where the value was there. The best dish for me was the curry, garlic rice and duck in that order. They were all so full of flavour, spice and fragrance. I couldn't get enough. Definitely on permanent rotation.

Warm atmosphere and friendly, welcoming staff. Amazing vegan and meat menu, so everyone can eat here. Very authentic and tasteful experience. Thanks guys 🙏💙

Great service and location Pity not our preferred taste too salty and sweet~ more like Chinese than Vietnamese dishes! Tried the 65/pp tasting menu for our celebration but even prawns were over cooked …..too pricey for what we got….

Great atmosphere, very nice and profesional staff, they helped us to go through the menu. The beef curry was super delicious full of flavor. We also tried the stuffed boneless chicken, which I believe wasn’t my kind of dish (it was kind of dry to me) but in general the place is a gem I would definitely go back to try more of their delicious options.

We had a great experience! The service is outstanding. Food was really good- we ordered from the Vegan menu and everything was spot on ! Really recommend this restaurant!!
Vanessa Rose
We recommend this restaurant because the service is very kind and very obliging. Bay Hong have a own menu card for vegan options. The portion are big enough and if you have food left you can easy have it for take away.

Amazing service with friendly and helpful staff. Expansive menu with lots of great options, including plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options. A little on the pricey side but you definitely get what you pay for. Would recommend!

Recently came for dinner based on recommendations on the page. Friendly and attentive staff who were extremely polite and went out of their way to accommodate any requirements.
Starters of dumplings and banh beo were delicious. Mains of tamarind prawn, ginger and shallot chicken and egg fried rice were underwhelming and disappointing. Because of the friendly service I might go back and give it another try but would select different options for main.

Since we got to the restaurant, waiters were very helpful and created a very good atmosphere. We ordered only starters. My favourity dish was rice paper rolls. Also dunplings were good. Only problem with the restaurant is that it is quite noisy

We had the vegan menu and omg it was delightful. And what made the experience extra special was undoubtedly the customer service. The manager was so helpful and his recommendations showed his enthusiasm towards Vietnamese food and the restaurant. Will definitely come back again.

The food is flavorful yet taste strangely familiar. Stuff crab is THE must try. We didn’t enjoy the drink. For instance, the “coffee” cocktail was too bitter, no alcohol taste. Overall the restaurant is a cozy place where we enjoyed our date night.

This restaurant serves one of the best food in sydney we tried chinese food here and the taste of food Was really awesome and the sitting area was also very good overall it was a nice experience and I hope to visit there again.

First off, the service here was incredible and for that it makes me want to go back. Not gonna lie, the prices are def over the top for what it is, but it is still good food. It kinda pains me to pay that amount for food I can get elsewhere for cheaper, but the vegan dumplings were special and much better than others I have had so worth the price. The clay pot and fried rice were so pricey and the portions weren't that big. 😭

Superb food flavour for all the dishes I have ordered. Wines are of reasonably priced. The ambience is nice and warm. Worth to visit ? Definitely YES. Thumb up for the attentive waiter.

What an experience ! Wow .. really interesting menu and super lovely staffs. They don't serve Pho and noodle here but oh wow the food is absolutely spot on and very reasonable pricing !Bravo the the floor team ,seriously first class service ! If you are after A differently type of Vietnamese dining experience then this is for you ! Highly recommended . They are fully licensed with cocktails (Yummo), Wine and international beers !
Good Food, Good Mood
Shoutout to two waiters who were so lovely and attentive. This is a verrrry modern Vietnamese restaurant.

We ordered the duck salad, beef with veggies, and one servicing of rice between two. Worked out to be $23 each? I was definitely full but not used to paying these prices back in Melbourne for halfway Vietnamese food (halfway meaning not fully authentic but not fully fusion either).

Unassuming and cute, with friendly helpful staff. Small menu with a boxed set of always-there dishes, and seasonal additions every few months. The king prawn dumplings were soft, juicy and so good. The Lemongrass Chicken Curry - oh my gosh - just do it.

Wonderful experience ! Food is simply Devine! Knowledgable and friendly staffs , great wine and cocktails . Bay Hong is a real gem . One of the Best Vietnamese in Sydney in my opinion . We tried a quite a number of dishes and all excellent ! They have a new menu every couple of months but there is a classic menu which always stay .

BYO Vietnamese restaurant in Darlinghurst. This is a good option for a cheap meal with a group of friends. Staff are friendly and the plates of food are best shared amongst the table. There is good variety and it will not hurt your pocket. Parking is not easy and it is not located on a train line however if you are in the area then this is a good option

From the second you walk through the door at Bay Hong you truly tell that the restaurant really cares for its customers. Staff were extremely informative and took to time to explain the menu and each dish. Although the portions were a little small the flavor made up for it. We shared a few entrees then for mains I had the lemongrass chicken curry - my chicken was served as drumsticks, wasn't the biggest fan of this without mention on the menu. BYO is a little pricey. Recommended for a flavorsome Vitamese meal

So yummy and delightful service! We had to order the dumpling entrees twice. All things gorgeous. Great night and we will be back for sure.
Anne Nguyen
Prawn dumplings were really juicy and plump. But there was only 3 in a serve so we had to upsize to get 4 so we could share properly. Then we had the creamy rice cakes. A tad small for the price i think but quite delicious. We decided on the caramelised pork belly claypot. Absolutely delicious. One of the softest most flavoursome pork hotpots Ive come across for a while. Desserts were a bit disappointing though. I ordered the banana puff but it ended up being a banana spring roll which the outside was a bit tough and chewy instead of light and crisp. Overall a really pleasant experience and the waiters were on the ball

It was my first time here last night. Warm, friendly service (by handsome waiters!). Delicious food. Had a fun night! Will definitely be back. :-)
John Young
Strictly speaking not Vietnamese but rather a fusion of SE Asian styles. Spices and sauces all from basic ingredients, which is a good sign. Though the staff didn't want me to view the kitchen !!!! (!). Service a bit indifferent but you wouldn't come here for the service anyway

It's impossible to write negative a review when you're being served by people who clearly care about their restaurant, the food they share and the customers they serve.

Dining at Bay Hong felt like eating at a family table. While portion sizes were a bit hit and miss, every dish was explained carefully by the knowledgeable staff who went out of their way to ensure we knew what we were ordering and what to expect.

For a dining experience where you are made to feel welcome and appreciated I would highly recommend.

My friend has introduced us to come Bayhong for a casual fine dinning because I was told this place has a very nice ambience. When we arrived the restaurant, I was amazed by the friendly greeting of the staff. Then we were introduced to look at the specials and we did. First starter was served which was Dumplings and we all were blown away. Followed by rice cake that we never tried before. Wow!!! The texture of this dish was superb. We also ordered 3 mains and we all loved the pork belly, meatballs and also osso. The serving was just right for us and the food was served just right timing as we were drinking and chatting. I will introduce my next dinning meeting here next month.

Biggest stitch-up!!!

Walking along Crown Street, we were enticed by Bay Hong as it was not to busy. The friendly doorman welcomed us to a table & promptly took our order. Very deceiving!!! Our entrees took 50mins to arrive! The main, the chicken curry, for $20, was 3x chicken drumettes!!! So tiny we didn't even know how to sort out this tiny meal between us. The rice then came much later after the main!!!! The worst service I have ever come across in Sydney. I feel betrayed & ripped-off!!

Really, really love this Vietnamese restaurant with its French influences. Eating the escargots and the seafood chowder are 'wow' moments, each of the dishes subtle at first bites/slurps but gaining in flavourful intensity as you get through. Other must-have dishes are the prawn dumplings and the osso bucco curry. Their cocktails are marvellous too.

Bay Hong somehow manages to keep going and going. It was, for a while, the odd restaurant "Rice Queen". I went a few years ago and had a truly awful experience in terms of service. I think, possibly, it's changed hands again. Friends suggested a casual Sunday night meal here, and we dropped by. It was not particularly busy. The best thing of all was the service: friendly and charming, and efficient too. We had a range from the menu: salt and pepper calamari, the traditional Vietnamese pancakes, spring rolls, pearl balls (sticky rice with some meat inside, possibly our favourite). The five spice duck was really a tiny portion, and I liked the stuffed chicken though am not sure it was worth $30. We enjoyed our Vietnamese beer. All in all, neither here nor there. A bit expensive for what we got ($45-50 a head), tasty but not special; as I said: very good service.

(This review was from a few years ago: "Don't be angry," said Rose. And she was so charming and sweet, I didn't want to be. She explained that with the 40 degree heat that her waiters had become dizzy. Or something. When we arrived, there were only 3 or 4 tables occupied. Our order was taken by a young guy who then sat down to eat with his friends, leaving the restaurant with only one waiter, a hapless fellow, nervous, and I suspect on his first day, with the restaurant rapidly filling up. We had a Vietnamese crispy pancake as a starter, which has ok, then the boneless chicken, also fine, but nothing special. And it took a long time to come, and we had to ask for it again. Then they forgot our ginger chicken and it was all taking so long, really really slow and confused service. Rose asked us about this, we complained, and she brought us a serving of homemade pandan ice cream, complimentary to make up for it. It truly was the highlight of the night, beautiful taste and texture. But we had to wait for the ice cream too. And wait for the bill. As we left, I recommended to Rose to warn the now full restaurant that service would be slow tonight as I was foreseeing disaster. I did have a nice meal here ages ago and the other reviews here are consistently good. But we had an awful experience.)

Lovely food and lovely staff!. We went there with a group of 20 for a birthday. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. They handled the large group without an issue. We had the banquet and the food was just amazing!!! Everyone was very happy. Thank you!!!
Leesha68
Beautiful food, fantastic service. I have eaten at Bay Hong several times and have never been dissapointed. I went with a large group on 21st March to celebrate my birthday and the staff went out of their way to make it a fabulous night. The banquet menu was great value and each dish was delicious. Thanks for making the evening so memorable.
Curry Badger
The chicken and beef we ordered were both marked with two carrot slices forming an X so you know where to put your fork. This place probably caters to those who are to drunk to know where the food is, which fits quite well for the location.
Fashimi
For mains we ordered a house specialty called the Flaming Boat. How could we not with a name like that? It was amazing – marinated prawns that came flaming to your table served with rice paper rolls and fresh salad with home made anchovy sauce ($21.90). Luckily we’d made rice paper rolls the night before because there was no instruction from the waitstaff on how to make them which could end in disaster for rice paper roll virgins

Bay Hong is located on the busy street of Crown Street, Surry Hills, the decor is simple and service warm and welcoming.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Hong Tran exhibits such flair on the floor of this well priced new restaurant, you might forget that she was actually born in 1988 - the same year her grandfather established perennial Vietnamese cheap-eats favourite Bay Tinh .

Fantastic experience all round! Delicious food and super friendly service!

A very enjoyable evening. I stumble across Bay Hong tonight looking to grab a bite before going to the fire works. I m glad I did this, it was an amazing dinner, I haven't been back to Vietnam for many years and I felt this dinner brought me back home.

The head chef came out at the end of the dinner to give everyone complimentary homemade ice-cream, she was really cute, I felt slack for her as a big group was screaming at her about the food being a bit slow and the service from the waiters was below average or something along those lines.... Well I sat down before them and got my last dish after them, so I don't quite understand what they were unhappy about.. I thought the service was amazing! and I personally feel if you're looking for a quick meal before the fire works then go and have some fast food.

If you like a nice dining experience with authentic Vietnamese food then I definitely recommend this restaurant. :)

Wow...great experience. Food tastefully prepared was just beautifully presented.. my first time with Vietnamese food service was great... ideal for celebration
Will definitely be back!

Authentic and delicious Vietnamese food! YUM!. We visited this restaurant with family last night and were blown away! We received friendly, warm service which is hard to come by. The food was fresh and each dish was such a surprise and delight. I was so blown away with flavour, kindness and the waiters warmed my heart. This is now our favourite local restaurant and we will make it a reoccurring dinner destination. We loved the farci crabs and the prawn dumplings were out of this world. Could not fault any of the dishes we had - pork belly, scallops, lemon grass chicken and beef with crispy noodle. Best and most authentic meal in a long time. No artificial colours or flavourings, everything was fresh! YUM YUM YUM!!!!! Can't wait to be back..

Fabulous, great food, really friendly service and value for money. Thanks to my friend's recommendation I got together a group of 10 people to try Viet food at Bay Hong last night, we really enjoyed our meal. All the dishes were great, especially the diced beef and the calamari......impressed by attentive and polite waiters. Service was really fast though the restaurant was almost full. The head chef Rose was very kind... she is the daughter of Mr. Tinh Tran who was an executive chef for the Prime minister of the republic South of Vietnam. She came out to say hello and recommended fantastic options.... Loved complimentary food –the special ice-cream with pandan flavor.... I have tried many Vietnamese restaurants but this one is just wonderful.
Recommended

We love Rose!. The food and atmosphere were fantastic. Loved the steamed prawn dumplings, beef minced and osso beef the waiter recommended. We had a great time and will definitely be back.

Last Friday night, we had walked past Bay Hong and decided to give it a try. We were greeted by a friendly waiter and we had a few dishes recommendation. We had dumpling, beef salad, osso and combo dessert. Wow. We love all the dishes and pandan ice cream was good. We will visit next week again to try other dishes.

Yummy. I love it here! I've lived around the corner for years and decided to try it last sat. They were a bit busy so we has to wait about 20mins for a table but it was worth the wait.

The chef even came out and gave us complimentary home made ice cream, it was delicious, she told me it was a traditional pandan leaf ice cream.

Will definitely be back! Thanks bay hong

Disappointing. We went there tonight with no expectations - had never been here before. I can honestly say this was the worst food we have ever had in Sydney and we have lived here many years !
The Vietnamese pancake was very greasy and doughy inside - burnt on the outside with few vegetables inside - really unappealing - I only ate what I did because I was quite hungry ! I thought the meal could only get better however this was not to be - the mixed vegetables dish our companion ordered was almost inedible and she could not eat it - it tasted strange with a weird combination of herbs ? and the vegetables looked very dubious and did not appear fresh at all. The tofu curry I ordered was awful - it was so salty and the tofu was covered in a gluggy curry sauce. Although hungry I could even not eat it.
Whilst the staff were nice, the meals came out very staggered - not sure what was going on or if this is normal for this restaurant but the food was truly horrible - I have eaten at a lot of Vietnamese restaurants and this was unbelievably bad ! not recommended !

Great food and even greater service !. Food was above expectation- absolutely delightful ! Thanks for amazing food and exceptional service !

Great food and really friendly service. My sister and I had a great night ! Bay hong is definitely a little gem of crown street ! Thank you. Definitely coming back no question.

Food was colder - service was even colder. Not only did it take an eternity to even get our orders taken, the food ( when it finally arrived was cold ) there was no apologies for the 40 min wait (even though the place was half full) The staff obviously wanted to be somewhere
else... I know we did after our food arrived - Take my advice try one of the other million or so Vietnamese restaurants in Sydney....

Great food and top service. We came to bay hong for dinner last night; lovely place , food was great and very attentive service . We ordered 1 entree and 2 mains plus a bottle of wine and everything was just perfect! Indeed we Will be back again this weekend ! Thank you!

Love this place !. My partner and I live just around the corner from thsi place, and we had been walking past it for ages !
Looking in from the outside, with the white linen cloths and soft lighting, you expect it to be quite pricey, but is is exactly the opposite.
We finally went there about two months ago and Wow ! Great ambience, really friendly service and some of the best Vietnamese food we have had ! We have been back at least once and sometimes twice a week since then, taking lots of friends with us, and have never been disappointed. Highly recomment to try it...and ask for Clayton or Zac to recommend some dishes..we will be back !

Be best Vietnames food i ever try. Not a pricy place for fine dinning and the food is just amazing

Great staff & terrific food. Prices were very reasonable. We had the soft shell crab, fish cakes, mixed vege stirfry & crispy roasted chicken. No need to go anywhere else!

My fave vietnamese restaurant. Bay Hong is not your typical Vietnamese restaurant and I love the menu items which I have not seen before at the vietnamese restaurants i've been too. Always love going there and think about it days later because I want to go back. Definitely order the Pearl Balls!
Sanjay
Nice place to eat. Food is fresh and not pricey. We had two entrees, two mains, two desert and a Bottle of red and all came to $100. I will be back and enjoyed the quirky entrees and grilled whole fish. Good value and the service was excellent.
Pollo_pesce_me
Vietnamese on crown. Sydney is missing good Vietnamese this one sort of fills the gap... Doesn't match the Vietnamese restaurants in cabramatta or epping but it's good value for money good chicken and soup. Recommend trying their entrees

Exceptional!. I was impressed the moment I walked in. The professional and friendly service, the quaint and cosy decor... and then shortly after we ordered, the food started arriving at our table. Every dish was just exceptional! I highly recommend the crab entre and the duck main. All desserts are so yummy (we ordered the the selection of all desserts). With wine our total bill for 2 came to under $100. This topped off one of the best dining experiences I've had in years! I will certainly be back again and again.

Great food & service. We have been coming to Bay Hong for a few years now. The lady who runs the restaurant is so polite & friendly. The staff are all very nice.

Food is very good, its not especially different to other Viet restaurants, however the service is outstanding.
Henry
Garbage. On MOTHERS DAY, the service was incredibly slow, the waiter's did not speak english properly and so just nodded their head when I tried to make requests.
We asked for the mains to come out at the same time, not an unreasonable request for a table of 6, the waiter then nodded as he proceeded to bring the food out one at a time. When we complained again, the chef came out to explain to us the difference between asians and aussies, and how aussies like to take their time and eat and asians like their food at once, and then proceeded to blame the waiter for not noticing our table. Our table being of course, 2 Australians and 4 Vietnamese.
Terrible service, won't ever go again, and don't recommend it as the food here is pretty generic for Vietnamese. Go Red Lantern instead.
Paul OBrien
Quality This was a bit of a surprise, turned up almost spur of the moment, great food, great service & great value found the staff exceptional. I don't think the food is completely authentic but certainly based on authentic dishes tailored for the Australian prefference, simply superb will go back again & again.

Wow. Simply a wonderful experience. stepping through the doors i was greeted by a very friendly maĂŽtre d and the sounds, smells and happy people all invited me in!!! very professional and efficient staff. the FOOD, DELICIOUS. i've been to many vietnamese restaurants and the food did not look like this nor did it taste as GOOD as this stuff! you'll salivate just looking at the dish as your friendly waiter/waitress brings it to you but tasting it is an EXPERIENCE. definitely a must. the prices are incredible! bay hong thank you for a delicious and beautiful night!

Stylish Vietnamese. Birthday salutations were in order, so the choice of restaurant landed us at this beautiful little venue just down from The Colombian. The decor is soft, cosy and simple, poshed up a bit with white table cloths, barrel pendants hanging from the ceiling and elegantly dressed staff. The Ao Dai the waitress was wearing reminded me of the ladies in Hanoi. A beautiful touch and great impression.
Being BYO and licenced we opted to bring our own (2 bottles) the first of which was efficiently opened and poured and birthday wishes were announced. "Miss Hanoi" over-hears and wishes me the same.
The hand written menu arrives. There's some nice sounding stuff on offer here. To begin we go for the Juicy Orange Rolls (fresh orange, prawn and pork wrapped in cabbage) Juicy is the operative word. Think fresh rice paper rolls, just rolled in cabbage instead of rice paper, intensely fresh prawn, plus a sweet injection of juicy-ripe orange. Nothing extraordinary, just a simple burst of flavour.
The Pearl Balls came as a trio of sticky rice balls stuffed with marinated chicken, prawn and smokey pork. These little beauties come hot out of the steamer and are simply delicious. A signature stunner! I wanted more.
Our first bottle of white came and went rather swiftly, obviously noticed by our hosts, which brought out the second bottle of white as well as two fresh glasses. Different vineyard ... clean glasses. Very nice touch.
For mains we try the Stuffed Boneless Chicken and the signature Duck Basket. The chicken comes out in thick slices, presenting the layers of boiled egg wrapped in the juicy pork mince and vermicelli wrapped in the chicken breast. A generous serving and very delicious.
The Duck Basket, sadly, didn't grab me as much as did the chicken. Without the impressive vertical crispy noodle basket, it would just be another conventional stir-fry. Yes it's tasty, just not wow.
Overall, the Bay Hong experience was exceptional. Flawless and professional service and tasty progressively traditional food in elegant understated surroundings.
Loved the surprise scoop of Pandan Icecream brought out for me with candle and sparkler. Thanks guys!
Highly recommended.

Fantastic Food and Service. The service was fantastic, but the food even more so. It's the sort of restaurant you go to thinking all Vietnamese food is the same. Here there is a definate attention to detail in the food presentation, the taste, and the quality of service. The atmosphere is great, and the location very central to the Darlinghurst area around Oxford Street. For two people, you can expect to pay around $80 for 1 shared entre and a couple of mains. The serves are not huge, but well worth the taste.
