Review Fortune Of War - Sydney

What a classic Aussie pub! Great simple food paired with a great drinks list! Such a cool old pub with a very nice open and modern outdoor eating area! Whilst still keeping the old school style pub alive on the inside! Had the chicken parmigiana, fish and chips and hamburger! Great food! Staff where very kind and friendly! Will definitely return at some point!

Great food, excellent location and live music - ticked all the boxes for us, and we managed to get a seat outside next to a heater. I know you didn't come here for a history lesson, but what looks like a typical Victorian pub back in England, was actually established in the Georgian era, or to be more specific, the Regency era. Lesson over. It's a fantastic pub and well worth a visit. 👍

It's an amazing venue, it's the oldest pub in Sydney. The staff are fantastic and live music in the beer garden. Good vibes in the heart of The Rocks

Great little pub on the rocks, a must visit. They have additional setting outside now and have been doing some great live music. Would strongly suggest for some afternoon drinks.

Absolutely amazing venue. Friendly staff & safe security who I’ve watched handle abusive clientele with respect & patience. The food is amazing. Get the broccolini! It’s a must try!! The artist singing had all of us singing along & having the best night out. We stopped for a drink & stayed for hours. 10/10 and a highlight of our girls trip to the city!

Great to get the opportunity to have a frothy in Australia's oldest pub (had a couple actually). Sat outside amongst the throng with my family and it was terrific. The QR code order system works really well, and it was quite quick too. As a tourist (from Adelaide), sitting near the harbour, the bridge as a backdrop, and a cold Tooheys New Schooner in hand.... Priceless.

Booked four people lunch Sunday. Loved the old heritage quaintness of the hotel. We dined in the bistro upstairs, light bright and airy, and not too crowded although fully booked. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Efficient, attentive and friendly. The guys ordered the beef stew with fresh chunky bread for dipping. They loved the flavours , no complaints there but felt the gravy juices perhaps could have been a tad thicker. The chips were great too. Two of us ordered the goats cheese pumpkin salad with the chicken and rocket. . Lots and lots of rocket. Perhaps the goats cheese and pumpkin could have been a bit more generous. No complaints with the taste, it was everything and more. I’d order the dish again. We had a fabulous afternoon and price wise was very fair. We’ll definitely be back with friends. The charm of this hotel is quite exceptional. I’ve only given 4.5 stars only because as said above a little additional here and there would have gone a long way to full stars. We had a lovely time, thank you.

Oldest pub in Sydney. Don’t expect much in terms of flashy decor. Simple setting, affordable drinks with live music during the week. Wish they made better use of their sitting areas.

Went with friends to have a nice evening drink and listen to music. Was asked to leave when someone complained I spilled drink on them when they actually heavily bumped into me. Absolutely rude and obnoxious security and manager had a pathetic attitude and wouldn't relent when we wanted an explanation with witnesses.

Avoid at all costs.

I have visited the Fortune of war located on George street Sydney. It was a fun pub once, gone down hill since. Management seem vague about who runs the place, it is just another pub trying to be a restaurant that has failed!

Came here for Anzac Day. Opened at 0600 which was nice for somewhere to go. Sydney’s oldest
Pub is their claim to fame, not a bad little little joint. Staff are friendly and beers are cold. Didn’t try the food so can’t comment on that... overall was happy with everything else.

The food is ok but pretty average, not worth travelling for. The staff are pretty rude, looking for any excuse to cut you off and Sydney is already such a nanny state

Average pub food, but fresh enough. My salmon had a great crispy skin & I loved the beetroot addition to the mash. Only whine was my fish was not piping hot. Service was fine. Partner enjoyed a good old fashioned shepherds pie, nice comfort food

Excellent pub, with a great atmosphere. We went there on a quietish Wednesday night, and the service was very attentive and the food was exactly what we wanted. A beautifully cooked steak with perfectly cooked chips. The salad was unique, but still very tasty and refreshing. Great bar staff too!

Schnit: Chicken Schnitzel.

Excusing the salad, which looked quite good but ended up on Mrs SchnitMyDadSays' plate, the attached photo probably does the meal justice. You can see the chips look OK but not great. The Schnit is beautifully golden but a little too crispy on the edges? Close call. Could have been a thicker cut, too. Pepper sauce, divine! I would come back as it just makes the cut.

For the people who have read my first review on Tommy's caffe, they would know that I like schnitzel so thats why I ordered it again on Friday night 5th June for dinner, it came with slaw salad, chips and a red wine jus.

There was only one thing that I thought that was strange, and it was the red wine jus.

Still waiting.... Been over an hour waiting for this food. Chef is struggling with the numbers but there is barely anyone here... Go elsewhere!
I Ate My Way Through
I love The Rocks because it is a piece of old Sydney. While it is of course quite touristy, it is quaint and it has atmosphere in its winding back alley ways and cobbled streets. I’m a sucker for cobblestones. It makes sense that The Rocks would house some of Sydney’s more historic venues. The Fortune of War claims to be the oldest pub in Sydney, established in 1828 by former convict Samuel Terry. It doesn’t get much more authentic than that; the land of plenty was built on convicts. Dining at the Fortune of War is fairly relaxed, with the option of eating downstairs in the front bar or upstairs in the First Fleet Bistro. There are a range of light meal options and bar snacks such as sliders, cauliflower bites or a traditional pork pie. For more of a meal, there are burgers and sandwiches as well as main meals. In-keeping with the historical Australian venue, I thought I better go for the Kangaroo Burger ($18); you can’t get more Aussie than eating one of the animals off our Coat-of-Arms! Mmm
tastes like freedom. The burger contains a herbed mince patty nestled on a brioche bun with cheese, tomato and spiced tomato relish. I’ve had kangaroo steaks before, and while I don’t mind the taste, find the meat a bit too chunky for my liking. This, however, is tender and delicious, and I would even go so far as to say it was the best kangaroo I’d ever had (sorry Mum). My companion had never tried kangaroo before, and despite his initial refusals I managed to force open-mindedness and he was pleasantly surprised. (I hate to say I told you so but
) Barramundi with house made tartare and chips ($21) I am a firm believer of the ‘there’s always room for dessert’ mantra, so we opt for some sweets. I figured I might as well continue the Australiana theme with dessert, going for an ANZAC crumbed macadamia ice cream with rum butter sauce ($6). The dessert selection is modest but solid. The Bread and Butter Pudding ($8), served with brioche, custard and cinnamon ice cream is a cl

When the nearby cafés are charging $20 for a pie the Fortune of War is a good option!. We had some cauliflower fritters and sliders. All good and all under $20 which is a steal in The Rocks. Would go again!

Hully + mates of 50yrs. Ordered the seafood dish after waitress described a tempting grilled Baramundi. I normally steer clear of this over-rated friend of the sea but I relented. What I got was a one sided 45 rpm with a filler song on the B side! The barrumundi was probably from Port Kembla - that is the blast furnace. It sat on on a bed of spanish onion and various types of lettice & cabbage dmothered in dressing. That was it - fish + lettuce! Wont be back; very disapointed. Keep your wallet in your pocket.
