Review Malay Chinese - Sydney

Jimmy LEE
One of best Laksa restaurants. Soup of Laksa is a full of creamy, heavy body, and coconut based curry flavor. Unfortunately, Laksa soup is not suitable for vegetarians as it is mixed with chicken-stock. This restaurant is always crowded with a number of patrons. So it is good to remember that you may need to be waiting until tables will be available for your turn. Definitely recommended!! 👍😋👍

I have never had a better Skinless Chicken Laksa, anywhere. The tofu is amazing and the broth is full and rich. The chicken is so tender it almost melts in your mouth. The service has been streamlined significantly and is very quick. A must for any visit to the centre of Sydney. I've been coming here for nearly 10yrs and the standard and quality of this Laksa has always been the highest. The one thing better than having a Skinless Chicken Laksa for lunch by yourself, is to share the experience with family. The chilli is amazing and takes it too another dimension. The crowd just 10 minutes after opening is a very clear indication of how popular this venue is.

Probably the best option out there for a quick and great meal! Lines were ridiculously long but they go by pretty quick (same with the laksa). Ordered the skinless chicken and prawn laksa ($14 from my memory). Everything was great really - nothing to complain about. Only downside for me were the prawns really - frozen prawns which doesn’t impart much flavour at all. Pretty common really with any takeaway.

Very fast service 2mins. Lovely chicken laksa. Very creamy and nice to have on a rainy day. Not the best laksa I've ever had but definitely the best for it's price at only around $13!! The soup got a bit too oily and creamy towards the end to finish but the noodles were very nice and slightly chewy.

Ordered a Chicken + King Prawn Laksa for $16.50 (cash only). Probably best Laksa in Sydney especially the broth. Incredible curry flavour with the right amount of coconut milk that I didn't really appreciate until I was done with all the noodles and toppings. The prawns were also very juicy but could be bigger. Quite comparable to Flemington Laksa King in Melbourne but overall would rate Laksa King more because: 1. More ingredients like eggplant, fish cakes and juicier tofu. I also like the laksa leaves in Laksa King more. 2. You also get Hokkien noodles along with vermicelli - here it’s only vermicelli 3. Chicken thigh instead of breast 4. Can get other good dishes apart from Laksa 5. $1 cheaper and even cheaper if you use the Liven app 6. Restaurant is nicer, here they use plastic cutlery and bowls and there's no table service Combining the broth here with the Laksa King toppings would be amazing.

Fast and convenient. Laksa soup was good, great flavour but very very oily. 0 vegetable in the chicken Laksa, I was expecting a minimum. I will try the veggie laksa next time then Not the friendliest service but nothing crazy bad

Ok... here me out. The best Laksa in Sydney (so far), from the extremely succulent and tender chicken, perfect spicy soup base and wonderful assortment of flavours coupled with the wonderful thin vermicelli; a dangerously outstanding bowl of Laksa that has been unmatched for more than a decade. I'd be interested to try their other items on their menu, but it's hard to ignore how good their laksa is.

Blazing fast service as always and consistently delicious laksa every time. Can't go wrong here. Just note that they only accept cash and the seating indoors is limited if it gets busy. The first time I was here, I ordered and pulled out my phone while I waited. I didn't expect my laksa to be ready in like 30 seconds and the staff may have gotten a little cross I was holding up the service haha. My bad.
Hungry Teddy
A nice Malay Chinese restaurant that’s known for their beautiful Laksa. I also like their other dishes such as Nasi Lemak and Char kway teow. Highly recommend Laksa. I give this place 4 bears
Sweet And Sour Fork
My go-to choice is the classic Chicken and Prawn Laksa ($12.7). The broth had a promisingly creamy appearance, its surface dappled with a slick of bright red chilli oil. Admittedly, this wasn’t as punchy as I had hoped; I’m not quite sure what’s missing, as the balance between the complex medley of spices and the sweet creaminess of the coconut milk was note-perfect, and the chicken was admirably tender. It was certainly a great bowl of noodles that I would be happy to have any day, though I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s my favourite like many people do.

Im so sorry for not really appealing photo since I am taking away. Trust me, I am from Asian and it has really great beef fried rice and Laksa there. Do not miss up if you are nearby, since I am taking away for quick dinner so its not that crowded. Maybe will be peak during lunch hour.
Harry X
The har mee is amazing! Rich and tasty in flavour, and always quickly served. The hainan chicken rice is good too.<br/>Try to avoid the peak hours, as it gets very hectic and crowded.

I have been coming to this place from long time and this is the best laksa place you can find in the Sydney.

We had the skinless chicken laksa and sing chao mai, the dishes came out super fast!<br/><br/>The laksa had a really nice deep flavoured broth without being overly oily or heavy, the chicken was very moist and soft to eat, I highly recommend extra tofu as the sponge texture absorbs the broth very well! The noodles were great, they are thin noodles but still keep their texture and don't get soggy.<br/><br/>The sing chao mai was full of wok hei flavour, it was very and I loved the savoury bean sprout flavour in it.<br/><br/>The complementary mandarins go down very well at the end of the meal.<br/><br/>The place was clean and the staff were all friendly, I will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes!<br/><br/>

at the Lime Street restaurant - I order a noodle dish with prawns. When it arrived, not a prawn in site. Told them they seemed like they couldn't care less!<br/><br/>make sure you get what you paid for or go somewhere else
Victor Greenwich
The place that all Sydney laksa fiends know well. They’ve been serving great laksa here since I can remember. You line up, place your order, pay in cash (cash only), grab your laksa, buy a bib so it doesn’t splatter and sit at the counter or one of the tables and let the chili burn settle in. Can’t go wrong.
Dominic Svensson
Finally some great laksa. The laksa had a very rich flavour in the broth (could still have been spicier and I hope that isn’t connected to the sign they put up complaining about chilli prices) and the ingredients seemed much better quality than I’ve been seeing in other recommended laksa places - like wonderfully tender chicken that soaked up the broth. Note I also got some takeaway rendang that turned out pretty bland so my review is on the basis on the laksa alone.
Hayley
We all got laksas as this is their most famous dish. The food came out in 10 seconds and it was a big bowl. The broth is really nice! My favourite part is the tofu, it had fully absorbed the broth and was really delicious! <br/><br/>Loved it!

Popped into this place at 1pm today and it was very busy! Plenty of seating in the restaurant, however, during the lunch peak there was not a single seat in sight which was a promising sign of how good their food was going to be. I ordered a chicken laksa and it was ready for me shortly after paying for it at the counter. The laksa soup was coconut curry based and was very flavoursome and had the right amount of spice. My partner ordered a Mongolian Beef with rice and I did not enjoy this dish as much. I highly recommend if you come here to order a laksa! Only reason I did not rate this a 5 is due to the lack of chicken in the soup. Besides that it was spot on. Reasonably priced as well. Would definitely come back in the future.<br/><br/>Please note: This restaurant is cash only!
Jonathan Lim
What can I say but wow? The har mee is freaking amazing. If you like authentic asian soup with a strong shrimp/seafood flavor look no further. The chicken and branches lake was very good as well.
Hungry Diner
I challenge you to find me a better laksa in Sydney! <br/>The king prawn laksa is my favourite. For $15 it is huge and packs such a flavour punch. <br/>Pro tip: Go just after lunch when it’s not so busy. <br/><br/>
Debby
The moment we entered this place we felt like we walked in a food court or hawker center in Southeast Asia. It's hot, full of people and lively. The laksa is tasty and heavy due to the coconut milk. The prawn noodle could've been better, it doesn't taste prawny enough. The hor fun is also average, lacking that smoky flavour.<br/>
Tony
Really good Laksa - to me sets the bar. The fine balance of creamy richness without being too heavy or too watery. Enough seafood to satisfy, although noodles seemed a like they were of the cheaper type. Will try other dishes if it’s not a Tuesday or Friday special.<br/><br/>They have a well-oiled system - make sure you know what you are having before you reach the counter with your cash in hand, shame no EFTPOS. Be prepared to share a table with a random, gets quite packed during the lunch rush.<br/><br/>
Jess
Best laksa and Har Mee in town! The queues are testament to this. Get there early if you’re after the Har Mee as this tends to sell out pretty early. It’s always busy but the turnover is pretty quick. Malay Chinese never disappoints!
Jianing Liang
This is my first time to try Chicken Laksa, soup is good, not live up to exception, service is good too, they will give you some recommend. The most important thing is, food is very quickly serviced.#cash only#

This restaurant is one of the best to try chinese items.I personally have visited this many times and I have never been disappointed by the service they provide. The environment here is just amazing and food is very tasty.
Every Crumb
Working close by, I see the massive lines out of the door from this place every lunchtime. Instead of trying to find a seat during the week, I came down on a Saturday afternoon where they were a little more quiet.<br/><br/>I had to get a bowl of laksa which their best known for, and also a plate of Char Kway Teow. The laksa was delicious rich and creamy, with noodles that had the perfect bite to them. The CKT was cooked perfectly, with good helping of meat and seafood thrown in! Easy to see why they’re one of the highest rated Malaysian restaurants in the CBD.
Catherine
+3 standard points for food<br/>+1 incredible toppings<br/>+1 good noodles, soup, and speed.<br/>5 = the toppings, sublime! The laksa? A staple.<br/><br/>Noise level: loud<br/><br/>Highlights:<br/>The prawns were incredibly succulent. There is no shell, not even on the tail, so it’s a perfect little nugget.<br/><br/>The fishballs are so pillowy and bursting with sweetness. <br/><br/>The tofu is the end of meal star. A perfect sponge for the sweet, slightly spicy, and very creamy soup. <br/><br/>It’s a good portion of noodles for $15!<br/><br/>Beware:<br/>Super crowded during lunch hour. Come a little before or after peak lunch hour.

I'm giving this 5 stars because it has the best harmee in town. Harmee is served on Tuesdays and Fridays only and it's super busy during lunch time so we always have to make sure we get there at 11 45 am if we stand any chance of getting a table. It's a small place although there is a decent amount of seating considering how small it is and yes, it means it's extremely cosy. There's always a queue but it moves quite quickly. The issue is being on the lookout for a table and being the first to get it! The staff often help in finding one. Setting is cafe style and service is quick-ish. I have tried the laksa and a few of the rice dishes. They're good but average compared to other Malaysian places. For me, the laksa is a bit too oily but no one beats the harmee here!
Laura Cohen
Have been coming here since I was a kid, and even remember sitting next to Neil Perry and thinking how good the food must be to have chefs like him come around. The food is absolutely amazing - in my opinion, the best Malaysian in Sydney! Their laksa truly is the best in Sydney and, dare I say it, the best in Australia. Truly a must try - their chicken rice and laksa are the two dishes you MUST have! Situated in the city, it's a short walk from Wynyard and it sure is worth it.
LKH
Can’t get enough of their Beef Laksa. I never liked Laksa before as to me it is always too creamy, but friend took me here months ago and now I am hooked. 😉

Great prices. Large servings. Great location. Reminds me of home. No fuss. This should be a 4.5 rating. Not sure how to do that on the app. Comment with instructions please.
Food_Rampage_AM @INSTA
An easy 3.75/5<br/><br/>King prawn laksa 3.5/5, plump succulent prawns, the laksa broth is a bit weak but rates among the better ones in sydney, short of boiling it yourself at home with prawn heads n fish bones then putting some fish meat to the blender. <br/><br/>Skinless chook laksa, cant score as i did not get any. Note the skinless bit is the breast meat. I am a leg man. <br/><br/>Char kwee diao 3.5/5, pretty rare to come across ckd which is not drenched in oil. <br/><br/>Mee goreng 3.5/5, as close as the real thing in spore esp with 1-2 spoonful of the free belachan on the serving counter. <br/><br/>Curry chicken, 3.75/5, pls ask for more of the heavenly gravy, heaped all on the rice w a dollop of (u guessed it, the belachan).<br/><br/>Needless to say, the Q is out the door.

Friday lunch time, before you can even walk inside, you'll see the massive queue out the door blocking the front of 3 other shops before it. That is the line to order which goes all the way inside to the counter at the back. This is obviously popular! Don't be deterred, the queue moves & I got to the front to order in about 15 mins, then about 5-10mins for the food. You have to be quick to nab a seat as people leave. It really isn't a place to linger anyway. The laksa is probably the best I had in Sydney. Good spice in curry base, not sweet, decent size pieces of seafood. Most definitely worth the time & hassles.
GobbleDok
As people say, it is one of the best laksa in Sydney.<br/><br/>Also, very quick service. You don’t wait at all for laksa, it is basically “ready to go”, but the soup is hot.<br/><br/>I must mention that their Char kway teow is amazing too. Although there is no pipi is in the dish, it is flavoursome. I share laksa and kway teow with my husband occasionally, and always rating “the best kway teow in Sydney”!
Henry's Food Reviews
This place is top notch.<br/><br/>I ordered a chicken laksa and it was delivered before my friend's order was even taken. The soup was creamy and rich, though not quite decadent. The chicken pieces were fairly succulent, which is fantastic as it is often overcooked in soups. Overall, it was a very hearty and satisfying meal. I can't wait to try the Skinless Chicken Laksa and their Hainanese Chicken Rice (which, as we all know, is the true measure of a quality establishment - not some tobacco scrounged from Saruman's pantry).<br/>In terms of service and ambiance, my friend made a remark that the restaurant looked very legitimately Malaysian, especially the chairs, which were particularly authentic. We must accept this judgement as truth for the speaker went to Malaysia just last month and is, I believe, a chair expert.<br/>Then again, my friend ordered a tap water (which is always room temperature) and remarked that it wasn't cold so ... I'll let you decide what you believe.<br/><br/>Also, they kind of wanted to rush us out a bit but if you are served quickly, it's fair enough to leave quickly. <br/><br/>Visit this store for a quick and satisfying meal on a busy day!

4 star for its price. We ordered chicken laska and seafood laska, and the taste was alright. The coconut flavour isn't that rich. Not really impressed.
Gugu_Chailatte
Best laksa ever! Speaking from someone who lived in Southeast Asia for years.<br/><br/>I’m a regular customer there like many of us working in the CBD. The restaurant is always busy over lunch time but the wait won’t be long, and it is totally worth it!
Andrew C
Really good Laksa, in a great location right in the heart of the CBD.<br/><br/>The restaurant looks a bit old and dated, and the decor is minimal, but as long as you're only here for the food that should not be an issue.<br/><br/>The Laksas are all great, excellent soup base. <br/><br/>I don't like the breast meat chicken, but if I recall there is a drumstick version which is better.<br/><br/>Can get very busy at lunch time as it is very popular with office workers
Famishedduo
We LOVE this restaurant in CBD. Located right on hunter street this restaurant always has a crowd and we now know why! They have a assorted variety of laksa and noodle soups, but our main go to is the skinless chicken laksa! They even do takeaway for those that need to have lunch in a hurry. The soup is the perfect level of spice with a touch of coconut to create a creamy and delicious laksa base. <br/><br/>The noodles and chicken go hand in hand with the soup and we are always lining up here for a lunch especially with winter coming!!
Elese
Very very delicious. Perfect flavour balance and yummy noodles and bean curd. Would definitely come back. Place was packed. Staff were friendly and efficient 😊
Wannabe Foodie
Fantastic laksa. I have not had laksa I couldn't live without, until now. I have been craving malay chinese ever since I first had it! Would recommend it to everyone.
Daniel Tjoanoto
Step in to the place , you will underestimate the food. Wait until you get what you order. I recommend to order the Laksa, if you still have room try the Char Kwe Tiao. Take the first slurp of the broth and you finally can give respect to it! This the kind of place that will make every Indo - Malay - Singaporean (Chinese) miss their home! It will remind you to your childhood dish. Broth very earthy, the price is on average and the portion also big! Don’t ever go in the lunch time, it will pack of people!
Gideon Setyawan
Just finished meeting, and asked by my mate to try this malaysian-chinese restaurant. Laksa was awwwesome. Tried the chicken and prawn, and was so good. A bit oily as it shows in the pic. I think this is pretty a fav spot for those office ppl, as the lunch break come, queue started to be longer and longer.
Prida
They say they have the best laksa in town. Tried it and it was okay but I think I may have better. Tastes more Chinese than I expected. Service was quick though.
A Guide For Your Appetite
Best Laksa In Sydney By Far!!!!<br/><br/>I never knew what Laksa was let alone to have ever tried it... Until my work colleague asked me to go to this family owned business.<br/><br/>Wow oh Wow. I started trying Laksa elsewhere but they just could not compare. I recommend the Beef Laksa. Make sure you add the Red Chilli after they give you your meal. <br/><br/>If you go at 12 pm... expect to line up outside the door! it gets packed and packed quickly, however once you start eating you will understand why.<br/><br/>If you live or work near the city, I very much strongly recommend you visit this restaurant. I have been to this restaurant over 10 times now, but only just adding a review to make sure... it was not a one off meal that tasted great... they have never disappointed.<br/><br/>I'll keep coming even though it is a 20 min walk from my work.
Eating_Monster
Arrived at 11am on Saturday and there were already some people eating at the place. They have special menu that day which was the prawn noodle. Since it was my first time here so decided to give the laksa a try first. Ordered the prawn laksa. Service was quick and they’re generous with the portion. Soup was very oily but taste wise was quite authentic to what I had in Malaysia. They put a big bowl of chilli (to eat with the laksa) at the counter, you can take as much as you want. Noodle was nice, lotsa bean sprouts and prawns. If you are craving for laksa, this is the place.<br/><br/>Tried out their prawn noodle on another weekend. The soup was flavourful but not thick enough for my liking, it’s light. Prawn were not fresh prawn, it’s a bit hard and chewy, generous portion though and they gave a lot of kangkung vegetable.<br/><br/>Also tried their chicken rice. You get to choose if you want chicken breast or drumstick. Rice was fragrant, chicken was nice and the chilli sauce was so good! It’s spicy and a bit sour. Overall, chicken rice was really good!
Ann
Ordered a beef laksa and a capitan chicken. <br/>Staff was really friendly.<br/>Food was good. Could smell the coconut cream.<br/>But for both dishes, there were too much salt, way too much salt.
Hui Ming Kayla
Tried the chicken laksa! The broth is so good and the chicken is so tender. Will definitely be coming back for more! Gets pretty crowded around 1.15 pm though. So would be good to get a space earlier
HungryForMore
We've been eating at this place for over a decade for authentic Malaysian food. Quality is consistent though lunch times are almost impossible due to how busy it is. Their combination hor fun is excellent, especially when you add a bit of their sambal on it.
Food Is Really Great
First time trying laksa! I chose the bean curd laksa but I think it would be better next time to choose something with more ingredients, since just tofu and noodles got kinda bland. The soup was very good! Not too spicy. And as for the environment, well, if you come during lunch hour (around midday to 1pm) then good luck with the crowd. I saw a few people walk past the store like "oh.. the line's too long" because the line went out the door, but even then I didn't have to wait longer than 10 minutes to get my order. It's an experience that's worth a try!
TheTinyFish
The Tiny Fish says: "A must try for any Sydneysider Laksa lover"<br/><br/>Food: creamy, hearty Laksa soup, but I would prefer my noodles softer.<br/><br/>Service: not that friendly, but they're busy with the constant lines of hungry guests.<br/><br/>Ambience: dingy, but what you'd expect for the low price of a gargantuan, quality meal.<br/><br/>Full details at The Tiny Fish blog<br/> <br/>thetinyfish.com/epicurean/2017/6/8/laksa-life-1

When word goes round, it picks up quite fast, particularly for this small eatery on hunter st. I attempted to eat around noon on a weekday and boy was the queue super long! Decided to just go on the weekend and it was so much more quieter. Friendly hello by the counter ladies. Ordered the chicken and prawn laksa for $11.70. Broth was good, lots of mini prawns but the downside is the chicken, too much fat/cartilage. Its tender though. Like their complimentary mandarins too. Its a good place for laksa so im keen to try other kinds when i venture back.
MaĂŤl Hartl
Great Laksa for a very competitive price. Staff is very friendly and efficient. Bravo! <br/><br/>The rest isnt too bad either! Keep it going!!!!!!!!!
Bo Meng
Safe to say this is the best laksa in Sydney. A good balance between the coconut milk and the chillies. Their rice and fried noodles are very good too.
Nem
Heard a lot about this place and I finally got to visit on a Monday afternoon. I initially dropped by around 1:30pm, but it was PACKED so I went for a walk (played a bit of Pokemon Go) and came back a little after 2pm. Got their chicken laksa (they don't have wontons :( ) and I really enjoyed it. It wasn't too spicy - which is a necessity for me and it wasn't too heavy. Tasted great and the portion was good for $10.7.
Leon
The signature laksa at Malay Chinese Takeaway is sooooo goood!!! The strong flavour of the coconut milk counterbalanced the spiciniess of the chilli and the chopped dried shrimps were fried before mixing with the gravy. The sambal chilli sauce was just like what you could find in Singapore and Malaysia. <br/><br/>I would have give them 5/5 if they used fresh beancurd skin and thicker vermicelli used in authentic laksas.
Ningjaeats
I've heard so many great things about the laksa from this place and I finally had the chance to try it out! The queue during work lunch hours were ridiculous but they're fast service and people coming in and out didn't make it feel like much of a wait at all. There is no wonder it's so popular, the laksa is seriously incredible - the broth is the perfect balance of spicy and creamy without being too heavy.

had a memorable lunch of Hainan chicken rice, still taste the same after 30 years, and my friend had chicken laksa reminded him of home. my friends still is working hard a do himself proud. thumps up.
Amelia Gammo
Have been here a few times and each time I find the laksa was veryyyy fish tasting. The quality of the chicken is also not amazing. Have had much nicer ones else where.
Joey The Whale
It was introduced by my colleagues and recommended by bf. I am quite impressed by this family owned/run outlet and its laksa coz I had been in Singapore for past 4 years but never really like laksa. The laksa here is different from what I had in SG, but it is really tasty and rich in flavor ;) will come back again for lunch on working days.
JDub
Har Mee here is amazing! They only do it on Tueaday, Friday and Saturday mornings, so best to go on these days. Also get here early because they get full quickly! <br/><br/>Though one major concern for this place is that they don’t take card and only cash... quite amazed how they can have a website but still not card in this day and age
Jianierrrrrr
Malay was recommended by my friend as one of the best Laksa in Sydney. Laksa is a noodle soup dish that combines Chinese and Malaysian cuisine.<br/>This place was quite popular during lunch time. Just like a fast food counter, you order, then wait for the food. Seriously, the food came out soooo quick! No need to wait at all, I guess that can save lot of time for the business person.<br/>Choices of different proteins are available. We decided to try chicken and prawn; beef too. The size of the bowl was big, with plenty of yellow curry soup. The red oil floating on the soup didn't make it spicy but make it looked more tempting. Malay served curry laksa, most of the soup base is the same but with different toppings.<br/>The soup was very rich and savory with coconut milk and lots of spices and herbs. It was delicious! The thin rice noodle picked up all the yummy soup with it, every bite was great~ however,I just wish they could put more topping in the soup. For my personal preference,I added extra tofu in it, that was the best~ the tofu would suck all the soup in and exploded in your mouth;) <br/>The hainan chicken rice was popular too. It was a very simple rice dish but with great flavor! The chicken breast was very tender the rice was the highlight! Seriously, you could taste the chicken in the rice! However, I need my chicken skin! I loved them, and if they could offer chicken breast and chicken leg to choose from that will be awesome! <br/>Overall, this place was great for quick lunch and cheap meal. The laksa was good but not the best.<br/>After tasting the Malay's laksa, I miss more my favourite laksa place in Canberra...no one beats that place so far...
Bijan Hoomand
Best Chicken Laksa I ever had (and I had a lot!). Try their skinless chicken laksa and it is to die for. They are open 7 days a week, anytime; it saved me multiple times when I got busy and didn't have time to go for lunch till 4 PM for example, or on Saturdays.
JH
Malay(sia), truly Asia. Laksa is king (I ordered seafood laksa). Great balance of flavours, not too heavy and generous helping of seafood. Zero decor inside but you are there for food (glorious food) so just enjoy it for what it is. Recommended!
Yulithefoodie
Please don't judge a book by its cover! This place isn't fancy... In fact it looks like a canteen... But the food they offer there is top of the range! They say simple food if done right is going to blow your mind! Same case here! Their laksa is so out of this world! Their mee goreng is also top of the range! I am going to try their harmee next!
Randomness_of_existence
If you want laksa in the Sydney CBD, this is the place to go. The laksa is the specialty here and it is very popular indeed. I find there is always some sort of line during any time of the day. <br/><br/>The restaurants has a very simple interior. Also there are no waitstaff so you have to order at the counter. <br/><br/>There is a variety of laksa's on the menu and you can't go wrong with any of them. They are very delicious and popular for a reason.
The Ruthless Foodie
Malay-Chinese Takeaway to the unenlightened:<br/><br/>If you're ethnic, you'll know what I mean when I say that white people never get it right when it comes to ethnic food. There's something wrong with their tastebuds or maybe they just can't handle flavour. For example, Spice Temple by Neil Perry is supposed to be the shizz... but it definitely didn't make me jizz. (Btw since I love you all, I'll be forking out ~A$150 in the near future just so that I can give it the review it deserves).<br/><br/>So you can imagine how shocked I was when my white superior took me to Hunter St Laksa during my first internship and I actually enjoyed it. Now, whenever I'm craving Malaysian laksa, this is my joint. It has all the characteristics that I look for when I'm on the hunt for some authentic Asian cuisine:<br/>- Asian to white customer ratio > 1 (bonus points for Asian elders)<br/><br/>- Terrible décor<br/><br/>- A majority of waitstaff lacking English proficiency<br/><br/>- Cash Only<br/><br/>- Really questionable hygiene standards<br/><br/>- BYO, no corkage<br/><br/>- Publicly shared condiments<br/><br/>The food here is amazing but the real drawcard is the classic chicken laksa. The soup is bursting with flavour which, let’s be honest guys, is probably because the pot hasn’t been cleaned for the last 29 years. It is light on the spice (to appease its diverse clientele) but you can always add more chilli to suit your palate. The noodles are thin, cooked to perfection and complemented by the right amount of beansprouts – I hate it when some restaurants can only afford to give you beansprouts. The only suggestion I can make to improve this dish is extra chicken but given CBD pricing, it’s still value for money.<br/><br/>Go before noon or after 1:30pm to avoid the lunch rush.<br/><br/>VERDICT<br/><br/>Flavour 8/10<br/><br/>Quantity 7/10<br/><br/>Presentation 1/10<br/><br/>Service 6/10<br/><br/>Atmosphere 10/10<br/><br/>Consistency 10/10<br/><br/>Value 8/10<br/><br/>Will I be returning? Yes<br/><br/>Substitutes? None, especially not Lee’s Malaysian<br/><br/>Look, this place probably doesn’t need any extra publicity but I honestly think it’s the only place in the CBD worth visiting for laksa. It’s so good that someone should bring Pauline Hanson here. She might stop trying to send the Asians back…<br/><br/>RF out! (No, I’m not Roger Federer) <br/> <br/>

When you need a hit of comfort food, Malay Chinese Takeaway is a super quick fix and cheap eats option.<br/>I’m a little late to this party. I don’t know why it’s taken me this long to make my maiden voyage here. It’s only been in the CBD for 20 years. All I can say is: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯<br/><br/>The menu here looks like all my favourite dishes on one compact list. However, it’s the laksa that we’ve come for today. There’s 11 versions on offer, each offering a variation of main ingredient, such as prawns, seafood, chicken, chicken drumsticks, tofu or a combination. <br/><br/>The bowls are quite large so you’d better bring an appetite. The soup comes out as an intense coconut soup with a rich consistency jam packed with flavour. It’s not super spicy, but has the right amount of sweetness, a little tang, plenty of spices come though and there’s a good amount of salt and fish sauce. Silence comes over our table when the soup arrives and focus shifts towards the giant bowl in front of us. It takes a little concentration trying to keep all that sauce from splattering all over your clothing, the table and your neighbours whilst you slurp up the sauce drenched noodles. I’d say try not to wear anything white or even light coloured. They do have bibs available at the counter for 50 cents – a worthwhile investment.<br/><br/>Full review at

We are not sure what laksa people are ordering and giving 4 stars, but this is one of the most sub par laksas we've ever had--sort of an average food court style version. It would definitely garner pursed lips from Miranda Priestly...<br/><br/>Soup was lacking depth and spice--just tastes like basic paste and coconut milk. <br/><br/>Tofu was tasty and so were the veggies and prawns. <br/><br/>Chicken had very little edible to it. <br/><br/>Cool ambiance and lots of potential, but there are a lot better laksas in Sydney for sure.

Ever time I visit Sydney I come here to get the king prawn laksa and agree it is the best I have ever had which is why I keep returning.  My only negative is that is closes at 7pm so if my flight is delayed or I get stuck in the office can be pushing it sometimes which I why I tried Wok On Inn, sadly!

Omg! The best laksa I have ever had so far, is at this place. There's definitely value for money. Enjoyed every bit of laksa in the big bowl. It's extremely crowded during the peak hours, which itself speaks about the quality of food they provide. Well worth waiting in the long queue and searching for a table dine in. Make sure to have money in haln as they do not accept cards. Apart from the Laksa, their noodles, etc too seemed delicious. Will definitely visit again and try them all.

I've tried the chicken laksa here a number of times, reputedly one of the best in Sydney. Other dishes that I have tried include the chicken noodle soup. The chicken laksa was quite good with a nice and creamy soup base which was extremely flavoursome. Of course it was a little greasy and oily but that's almost expected in laksas. The noodles were fresh and the chicken portions were generous and had a soft texture.<br/><br/>The service was more along the lines of a quick turnaround outlet but still more than acceptable. The setting is quite basic but that is basically in keeping with the character of the place. Prices are reasonable and it's one of the best places for chicken laksa in Sydney as far as I'm aware.

Use to be one of the better laksa places in cbd and the lines every lunch time testify to that however recently i find the laksa soup to be lacking, not as spicy as before and loses some of its taste.<br/><br/>Still a decent joint but not as great as before, recommend the chicken laksa if youre hungry and looking for a feed.

Best laksa in Sydney. It's always very busy during lunchtime during winter or summer. Awesome value for money too - the other dishes are also pretty good

•Busy at lunch with plenty of seats and service is quick<br/>•Seafood laksa - honestly not the best I have had, flavours a bit bland but the soup base was great<br/>•Hainan chicken - rice was chicken rice (yummy!) but the chicken was also a bit bland, the Malay place under Westpac in North Sydney has much better chicken as a comparison.

I tried the chicken and prawn laksa. They served extremely quick and the volume is big. However, the taste is not empressive. Next time I might try king prawn one.

I am a big fan of laksa and on a mission to try most of lunch time laksa places around CBD.  Obviously Malay Chinese Takeaway is massively popular for its laksa and no tasting would be complete without a trip here.  I arrived at 1:30pmish and the restaurant was still full. In fact the queue never stopped in the 40 mins time I was there.<br/><br/>Strangely enough they had three options of chicken laksa - chicken with skin $9.70, chicken without skin - $10.70 and chicken drumsticks - $12.70. Personally I think it was a bit unnecessary.  I went for the tofu laksa as I liked the sponage soak up the laksa broth and then squirt in my mouth.  First impression was -- it was a huge serving but covered in oil.  I could hardly see any noodles when a thick layer of oil floating on top of the bowl.  The soup itself was rich and intense as opposed to some really thin and watery ones I tried.  However it didn't strike a good balance between the sourness from tamarind, sweetness from palm sugar and the saltiness from fish sauce. The former two were missing.  I could only taste the saltiness.  Also they didn't have a mixture of rice and egg noodles.  It was a minor point but I prefer the two different textures from the noodles. <br/><br/>In comparison, I still think Laksa Laksa on Pitt street near Park street has the best (and as a bonus the cheapest $8.90 or $12 for two) laksa in town. But that is just my opinion.
Tortuguita Comiendo
What can I say but yummo! The laska is the right mix of spice and coconut milk at the right price. The place is small and not air conditioned but despite this you must go and try it!

As everyone else says best laksa in Sydney. Great little Malaysian lunch joint. Super packed so not good for a cozy, leisurely sit down. Pretty awesome though.

This place definitely have the best laksa in sydney by far. It gets quite packed so come in just before 12. It looks like you get more food if you eat in instead of takeaway.

This place has the best laksa in Sydney (in my opinion).<br/>Flavoursome, large portions and great price. The only drawback is it's always crowded.<br/>The hainanese chicken rice is also delicious too.

My all the time favorite laksa place in Sydney. The soup base is so nice.<br/>Portion is huge. No way i can finish it.<br/>I love the green chilli chuncks. Don't miss it.<br/>The hainan chicken rice is very nice too.<br/>My friend loves the prawn noodle soup (har mee).

A frequent lunchtime haunt for me- though expect it to be everyone else's too as it gets crazy packed! A few more fans or air con would be well appreciated, especially moving into summer. We ordered seafood horfun which was very tasty, but was nothing compared to the skinless chicken laksa. It's truly the very best in town and a must-try!
Mukie
Ckt was average- felt it lacked ingredients so was disappointing. The seafood hor fun was really tasty though and will definitely be back for more. Have yet to try the infamous laksa!
Princess_Porky
Hands down the best laksa in Sydney. They also do a mean CKT and clear seafood soup. The only disappointment I've had here was with the chicken rice. But my bad for straying from the laksa!! Really no need for anything else. They're the laksa gods. Don't forget to get a heaping spoonful of that fabulous pickled chillis!!

The good laksa. My antenna started waving as soon as I walked through the door of Malay Chinese and saw the long queue of people waiting to order their laksa. There was a particular look of focused anticipation that suggested that this was not the first time they had been here and would definitely not be the last. The laksa ranged in place from $9.70 to $12.50 without extras. I decided to splash out on the chicken and king prawn laksa with extra tofu (I just love the way that the tofu sucks up the broth and becomes a liquid cushion that oozes spicy goodness). The laksa was a really generous serving and was so delicious. I tried my best to finish it but couldn't quite manage it. In terns of surrounds this place is definitely basic. Lots of formica and shiny surfaces for sound to bounce off so it is pretty loud. The service is rushed but efficient, they do a really good job of turning over that queue, and while crowded, there did seem to be enough seats to go around. Having been here once though, I'd make sure to come early next time, so I don't have to queue and can choose a better seat.

Im always satisfied after coming here. It's hearty no-nonsense Malay food and you really get your money's worth. The laksa and hainan chicken are great here! Good luck getting a table during lunch time though because this place is one hell of a popular food joint ♡
It's CAKe Time
The Top Line: When you see the a giant line building, and when all hope for grabbing a table seems lost, don’t give up. Fight through the crowd and you shall be rewarded. The laksa will blow you away. The Review: Many restaurants serve the humble laksa – a Malaysian noodle soup with a coconut cream and curry laksa base, often with hokkien noodles or vermicelli. This one has rice noodle and the soup is thick, creamy and has so much depth of flavour. The fried tofu is brilliant because it sucks up all the flavour and it’s a joy to eat. The chicken here is wonderful, but get the skinless chicken laksa if you want chicken that doesn’t seem like the off-cuts of a Hainan Chicken rice.
The Happy Tummy
The best laksa in Sydney if not in Australia!!! It is so addicting. <br/><br/>Just a warning, you will have laksa cravings after trying Malay Chinese Takeaway's laksa. That's guaranteed. <br/><br/>Now, the place is always packed during lunch hours and it can be difficult to get a seat. The technique is to spot your prey (the ones that are about to finish their bowl of laksa) and just stare at them. Don't feel bad, you will have your turn of being a prey. So if you don't have the energy for this, come in earlier or during the weekend.
Chilli Feli
Super busy place, it's filled to the brim on a weekday lunch time. Tried both their Laksa and har mee so far, good portion sizes and great value.

Came on a Saturday afternoon, which might have been a mistake. Have been here before and the laksa is delicious. This time they seem to be running out of ingredients. I got the last chicken, and it was obvious. Instead of the gorgeous chunks of white meat that had absorbed the delicious flavours of the laksa, it was stringy, brown, and fatty pieces.<br/><br/>Leaving that behind and focussing on the tasty laksa and the noodles was as silky as always, but the walk across town just to come here has lost a little sparkle thanks to the sub-standard meat.
Joanna Spencer
I'm Malaysian and I confirm that they have the best true Malaysian Laksa. No one else comes close. Lunch queue is always crazy. So go early or later. If you dare, must try the Har Mee too.
La Petite Bobo
Seriously amazing laksa - I can't believe I've been living around the corner for so long and had no idea! I had the seafood laksa which was absolutely delicious and light. Huge servings and only $12.50. Nice bustling atmosphere - particularly on the weekends with loads of families! I will definitely make another visit!

This place has been around forever and when I lived in Sydney I used to go to their shop in Castlereagh Street. Now many years later I'm glad to see that my favourite Hainanese Chicken Rice is still delicious. Yum!

It is often considered the benchmark for its curry laksa and har mee (prawn mee). I have tasted quite a few bowls of Har Mee at the different Malaysian restaurants in Sydney, by far this is my favourite place for a Har Mee fi

Simon Food Favourites review. My favourite place in Sydney for a laksa fix. Tried the Chicken & King Prawn Laksa ($12.50). Good depth of flavour, good sized prawns, generous portion size. Seating is always the challenge during peak hour lunch time. Go early or late for a seat or be prepared to wait but it's worth it.
Luder.crous
Light and full of flavour. Light spicy and lots of flavour. Great serving size and customer service is average but makes up for it in snappiness. Love the texture and flavour of the broth. Normally not a fan of Laksa as other restaurants overdo the coconut milk but with these guys it's all perfect! Got the $9.70 chicken with extra vegetables for $1.
Dimsumforone
Authentic Malaysian – come for the curry laksa, and make sure you come early or you might find yourself on the end of a long queue. The big and bold flavours of the laksa – formed from a rich curry base balanced with a generous hit of creamy santan (coconut milk) – separates Malay Chinese from the other pretenders in the city.

If you have the flu You know what to do Get some laksa into you! ( At Hunter Malay Chinese ) I favour the vegetable laksa with extra tofu (and a bib to save your shirt). Easily less than $10 for a meal that will set you right & bust that head cold. Add extra chillies in oil for added efficacy. If going for lunch go either at 12 noon or after 1.30pm unless you love to queue. Hunter Malay Chinese 1/50-58 Hunter St, Sydney NSW 2000 (02) 9231 6788

Sydney CBD Cheap Eats Under $10 *Pre-warning: I do not diet!  Malay-Chinese Takeaway   58 Hunter Street  Sydney, NSW 2000 Website chicken laksa $9.70 vegetable laksa $9.5 bean curd laksa $9.50 beef laksa $9.70 Malay offer “Sydney’s best laksa” – the laksa is well balanced and boasts fresh ingredients at affordable prices.  *Beware* you will get caught in a terrifyingly large line that will likely trail all the way out of the restaurant. Rest assured, the staff at Malay are extremely quick at pumping these bad boys out and before you know it (within 5-10 minutes), you’ll be ordering your laksa. The laksa is whipped together in little over 3 minutes.
I'm Still Hungry
A special of the day I ordered at another time was the Asam Laksa (or Assam). This type is not commonly found in Western countries but there should totally be more exposure here. It’s made with sour fish sauce (the sour part comes from the addition of tamarind). Common ingredients are shredded fish/seafood, meats, and thinly sliced veggies. It’s vastly different to the common penang laksa (above) as the soup is so different.<br/><br/>Some people dislike asam laksa due to the fishiness, so to determine whether you’ll like it or not…take a whiff of fish sauce and see how you fare.
