Review Phillips Foote Restaurant - Sydney

Anh Tuan
warm, cozy dining restaurant with hidden garden and a cute bar specialized but not only in steaks, with fresh salad/fruits/pasta buffet stations. Crowded at weekends. Getting popular among tourists/ fly-over workers as a must-try even with short stays in Sydney.

Good meat, good atmosphere, good drink. Definitely so nice place. And in Philip’s Foote you can dine in a unique way. It mean first you can choose a type of meats and then you cooked the meat by yourself. And you can also bring the salad as many as you want. Must visit.

It's fun to cook/BBQ your own steak! (only if you know how to cook tho). You pay for choosing a beef/lamb/pork/fish and you cook it on your own. Lot's of seasons, sauces, sides, and salad to choose from and it's all you can eat buffet style. Drinks need to be purchased from the bar. Staffs are friendly and they DO tell you everything is self-serve so don't complain that there's no service from the servers.

BBQ by yourself. The location and atmosphere are great. Due to COVID-19 there aren’t many meat and sides choices. The building are renovating now.

Absolutely loved the concept of this place. We walked in to the bar and ordered outlet drinks, then wandered back to the smokehouse to pick our food. We opted for a precooked option but you also have the option of cooking your own meat. Portion sizes are huge and you can always go back for more salads and veggies.

I really can't give it anything less then 5 Star. Where do I start from , Service & Staff were excellent and smilingly serviced us. It was good to see such high service standards. The overall concept is simply awesome DIY. Meat quality is superb and fresh. Ambience was great and the the Big Boss was Super awesome with his hospitality skills and a great Guy.

Love the cook-your-own steak experience here, all the side dishes are free flow but after having my huge piece of rump steak n salad, I am too full for seconds. Highly recommended

A great place to come with mates and have a few beers and barbie. Cook your own meat purchased at the onsite butcher. All you can eat salad bar and bread.

Great place to catch up with friends, cook your own or choose a roast etc from chef cooked menu. $33 for Barramundi vegies and salad.. Hubby cookes cookedit perfectly and needed a separate plate to eat it off as was the length of both oval plates combined absolutely massive. Who wouldnt wouldn't eat here😀 staff friendly and helpful and in a perfect spot near the Quay have been coming here for years

It's an amazing place to relax and catch up over a beautiful meal... cooking your own meat and a beautiful buffet of salads breads and vegetables with all condiments are supplied in the price. The drinks were very reasonable too. The staff were awesome and the Manager was a very nice guy who took his time to have a chat! It's my favorite place and has been since 1985 when I got my first job in the city... exactly the same just gets better with age!!!

Great old pub/eatery in The Rocks with a fine atmosphere. Cook yourself meals are a fun way to talk to other patrons. Good selection of both meals and beverages with an all you can eat sides to compliment your steak, seafood or other meal choice.

Wow what a sensational place tucked away in The Rocks. The kebab is to die for. The service is above all expectations. Will definitely be back

Fantastic cosy spot for a stop off during Vivid Sydney and grab a decent dinner.

I was just having a beer in here (as I usually do!) and overheard one of the staff talking about homophobia. He stated “I’m not homophobic, well that’s not entirely true” and then the man, and two others proceeded to laugh about gay men. I thought that’s ok, everybody has an opinion but then one of them said “bloody pooftas!” At that point I decided to leave my unfinished beer as I felt extremely uncomfortable and I felt it to be incredibly inappropriate and discriminatory. It’s such a shame as I often spend my hard earned money in here enjoying a quiet beer or three! I can definitely say I won’t be doing that again - in this establishment! Everybody is entitled to opinions, but as a customer I shouldn’t be hearing them and they certainly shouldn’t be making me feel uncomfortable.

It's a convienient place to eat & meet in The Rocks. Food is a variety of meets to BBQ your self and usually a fish. Beers are good.

Quality all the way. Cook your own steak in a little piece of paradise hidden away from the bustling Rocks scene.

This is the best kind of self service there is. would recommend to anyone who fancies a night of BBQ & beers in a popular area of Sydney.

Cannot speak highly enough of Phillip's Foote. Service, attention and food all first class. Best steak in town.

I came here on a Friday lunch for a reunion, otherwise I don't think I would have known about this place. I first went into the pub and then realised there's a courtyard at the back. I didn't order the bbq and went for bangers and mash which was decent and a good portion but the bbq seems very popular. You choose your piece of meat and then cook it yourself on the barbie. The wait to use the barbecue seemed long though on a Friday lunchtime. The salad bar looked alright and the meat looked like it was decent quality. At the time, I thought it was a bit hefty but I suppose it's probably similar to what you'd pay at other places (except you have to cook it yourself) and well, everything is a bit on the steep side at The Rocks.

Should I rate myself higher because I cooked it myself? Which is exactly what you do here. You buy your meat, take it to the barbie....wait...wait...wait then eat. If your steak goes to custard it's no ones fault but yours.
The meat is good quality. We shared a rump steak which cooked beautifully. The salads were ok. Nothing startling but the meat was lovely.

This spot is right in the heart of The Rocks so prices are higher due to the tourist foot traffic. We came here for a group dinner early one Sunday and it's a cook your own protein place. This sounds like fun, but for a premium price, you're responsible for cooking your own meat and getting it right. So if it's not cooked great, you've paid a lot of money and it's your own fault about the cooking! I chose off the alternative menu and had a beef and red wine pie. We were told they'd bring it out to us in 10 minutes but 15 minutes later, still no pie. I went in to check on it and they'd had it sitting there waiting for me. It was steaming hot so no issues about a cold pie but it really lacked excitement. The salad bar that comes with the cook your own meats looked ok - nothing overly exciting.

For the price, I thought this place was average but it seems popular so perhaps it's just not really my style.
A Guide For Your Appetite
It's all about food and fun

My colleagues and I usually no... Always go to this Restaurent to have our team meetings and other leisure meetings.

The idea of this Restaurent is to go to the 'kitchen/store' buy your meat, chicken or fish and then go outside and BBQ it yourself. Don't worry there are guides on top of the BBQ to tell you how many minutes.

Food - at the end of the day it depends on the chef .... YOU. My team and I have never had any bad experiences at this place. Salad and sauces are unlimited, so once you buy your steak etc... Help your self to salads and sauces, breads and cooked potatoes. A couple of pointers about this place is that 1- they do not have hot chips and 2- their steak/meat is very small for the price they selling it for.

Service - well your really doing all the device yourself. The only time you'll speak to a staff member is when you pay for your raw food and then at the bar. But regarding these two... The service has always been outstanding.

Atmosphere - I recommend this for your Sunday family lunches, for your weekend dinner date, your boys or girls night out or for your company team meetings. No matter what reason, this is a place to try.

Value - it's not pricey if you take into consideration the cost of drinks at the places surrounding the Restaurent however regarding the food, I believe they should provide much bigger cuts for the price if $35 (price has to be confirmed). Though for the enjoyment you will get out of this, the value is affordable.

Overall - can't say anything that is very negative about this place. My team and I will continue to go this place! IT AWESOME! A must try if you are visiting sydney!

So phillips foote has a stall at the rocks on fridays and they serve a mean pork crackle sub sandwich, 'home made coleslaw', pulled pork, topped with crackles, drizzled in the special sauce. Service was excellent, offered to wrap up my sub after telling them that it was for 'take-away'. Otherwise, my sub would have been 'open top' like the convertible i am supposed to be driving😄.

You can order your steak at the cook house and cook it by yourself. A full step clear instruction is above the BBQ surface. They also provide salad bar, you can refill your salad as many as you want, but the vege there is not very fresh and meat quality is ok.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
As if there weren't already enough reasons to get excited about Fridays... thanks to The Rocks Friday Foodie Markets, there's now another.Whether you're dashing out of the office for a quick lunch, or you've got the time for an unhurried stroll through the cobbled back streets of The Rocks, the only problem with this open-air food market is deciding what to put in your mouth first.I kicked off my food crawl with some irresistibly smoky scented meditterean-style BBQ skewers (2 for $10 or 3 for $15) at Danieli. Spoilt for choice, I went for one each of the garlic-infused prawns, marinated octopus and kangaroo fillet skewers, enjoying each with Danieli's homemade chimmichurri and tzatziki sauces on the side.Next up, I found myself pigging out on a Phillip's Foote Roast Pork Roll ($10) with 'slaw, apple sauce, gravy and crackling, which was every bit as decadent as it sounds

Let me start this review by stating that I am completely biased when it comes to the Phillip's Foote Family Restaurant, having worked there whilst on my holiday breaks at University. I absolutely love Phillip's Foote: from the snug little front bar; to the cobblestone steps leading up to the BBQ's; to the meat and salad station up the very top. I imagine that not many people in the Hospitality Industry would love/d their place of employment, but I did. I particularly loved being fed in between shifts. I'd cook a steak on the BBQ (mainly the marinated rump steak) and help myself to a decent portion of salad. Phillip's Foote holds such an endearing place in my memory. My family and I have returned to Phillip's Foote many times to celebrate family occasions. It's such a great place.

Place was good.

It has since gone downhill, happy to be a tourist destination that people go to once and that's it.

Used to be more welcoming to locals and be a place everyone could enjoy.

I feel the management got greedy and want more in and out food orders from tourists than regular locals having a beer. Can't blame them if this is what makes money, however, our crew of locals will never return.

Good food and the meat portions are generous and love the salad bar. Overall its great fun for the office get away or to celebrate a success. I enjoy it here and have been back several times . Its not cheap about 70 a head with drinks but its good value for what you get and certainly is the other end of the scale from Surlys where I went today.
i think this rocks restaurant delivers the best steak in Sydney!
The Flying Chef
When I think of Sydney my thoughts always turn to “The Rocks.” As one of Sydney’s famous tourist areas, this place has it all. In and around The Rocks you will find the world-famous Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbor Bridge, some of Australia’s oldest

Great place so much fun. I went thare 5 times when I lived in Sydney it was so much fun cooking my steak outside with nice people too talk too

Terrible. $32 to cook my own steak, no thanks! The salad bar was reminiscent of my time in boarding school and the whole place was teaming with smokers. I am suprised that this place has such great reviews because it is really terrible!

Excellent! One of the best places to eat in Sydney. Novel idea. Excellent service. And the quality of feed was top notch. We also had a person in a wheelchair in our party and although the venue is not ideally set up for this (old cobblestones) the staff couldn't have been more helpful in accommodating our needs. Well worth a visit!

Good things afoot.... I really really enjoyed my evening here recently. All the reviews are spot on re: this place. It is distinct from anything else in the rocks and good work for being so! If you are precious about a cook-yourself (see it as a goof rather than a gimmick) than you are not going to like paying 20 something bucks for a steak but if you are keen on low-key, lovely staff, and laid-back in a killer part of town, I say this is your place. Love the upstairs interior! Check it out before you leave. Also note: the DIY instructions are spot on so even if you are not a great grill chef you will make ti work here. Enjoy!

Good for something different. Ate here for dinner one evening after it was recommended to me by a friend. Steaks were good and the salad bar good too. You cook your own food on the BBQs and help yourself to the salad bar and bread.
It’s a good place for something a little different in The Rocks with a bit of a novelty value as you cook your own meat but maybe a little expensive given you are serving and cooking yourself.

Good wine. Enjoy a glass of wine at Phillip's Foot on a friday evening. Though I do wonder what that football in the glass box is all about?
Check Please
True Gem. This hidden gem reminds me of an Aussie Aladdin's Cave. One peek through the front door and you could mistakenly believe that all you have stumbled upon, is a nostalgic bar. Upon venturing further, you'll find a maze of cozy rooms and a gorgeous courtyard where you can enjoy a cold ale and a delicious steak on the barbie. It'll probably be the best steak you have ever eaten, cooked to perfection, just the way you like it as you cook it yourself on large outdoor grills ! The accompanying salad bar is also robust enough to satisfy any vegetarians in your group. Whenever we have visitors in town, this is the place we go. So it is only fitting that this is my first review on urbanspoon.

Sweet and Confusing. This place has a wonderful atmosphere once you figure out how it all works. I think the owner is going for a "make yourself at home" sort of a place but it's really confusing. I loved the staff they were really nice and accommodating. That being said they really must hand out some kind of pamphlet to every customer who walks in because it must get so annoying having to explain how it all works every time.

I was really happy with the food, it was a lot of fun having a drink with my mate whilst cooking my own steak. Would happily come back and do it again but i think this place is more for the boys than girls.
Tezz From Brizzy
Chef Tezz. Great fun to grill your own meal, they need to have multiple lingual cooking instructions, breaks my heart to watch tourist blunder through not knowing how to cook a good quality steak. (the Aussie instructions are very good) well done t bone 8 minutes each side and no peeking. And no cracking jokes to the staff about "compliments to the chef"....

What a strange location. Ive always walk past this place in The Rocks and the front looks like its a small pub, i had no idea there was anything at the back. Shows how much you think you know about Sydney!!

A Interesting place where you cook your own meat on a communal bbq. If my friend didnt show me what to do i wouldnt have a idea what was going on!!

You first buy your meat or fish,
there are bbq where you cook yourself. There are plenty of sides there to choose from. The price though doesnt justify what you get.

For what you get, you
expect someone to be cooking for you. There are many choices for sauces but arent labelled, me and my friend got this mustard sauce which was a killer,it was so hot the inside of my mouth
exploded!!

Imagine wasabi 10 times hotter and the feeling lasting 10 seconds,it was not good!! It was so hot i had to spit out what i had in my mouth. MY poor friend had already smeared it all over his and it was uneatable. Didnt see any labels......and learnt the hard way

Plenty of side dishes to choose from

Ambeience wise that was hard to tell for me because it was pouring hard with rain but the seating is not cramped and its all outdoor seating. Nil issues with service

I dont know how my friend knew about this place but it was a interesting experience
