Review Peppercorn At Civic Thai Restaurant - Sydney

Jamie
My first visit and now Peppercorn is my to-go when I crave for Thai food. The service was friendly, the deep fried prawns were fresh and crispy yet not oily at all. The green curry had the right consistency and a good portion of veg in it..The peppercorn soft shell crab was a killer. Again the deep fried skills were perfect. The peppercorn stir fry veg was absolutely addictive. The only little letdown was the Singha beer. It didn't taste fresh or smooth. Next time I will order the Asahi tap beer. Perfect food, comfortable environment and excellent customer service. I am a happy customer!

I haven’t been back to this place recently, so I decided to re-visit this place again. Well, all foods were delish, so for last night dinner, we had, Pork knuckle, it was succulent and crispy at the same time. Waiter asked, if we want chef to cut it up, and we are agreed. Presentation still looks very appealing! Chicken feet salad...this is new dish for me to try. Unbelievably soft texture and the condiment and sauce goes very well, even though dressing might be a little sour for some people. And stir fry vegetables with ginger and duck meat. Amazing!

Peppercorn provides a bright spacious environment for some very tasty well presented Thai dishes. The prices are a bit high but they compensate with slightly bigger portions. While the food is good in general, I was served an overly salty fried rice during my most recent visit. Fortunately, my colleague had some spare plain rice for me to dilute the overwhelming flavours. Edit: On my most recent return, I tried the Crispy Rice Salad that tasted oily and did not have the refreshing taste of a salad due to the lack of vegetables in the dish. If I get to rename the dish, I would call it Crispy Rice with Spam served on a few leaves of lettuce!

Great services and nice Thai food with a bit of fusion! Make sure you try their dessert menu too! Visited again on the 19th Jan. Though quieter than usual, still delicious with superb services

Great atmosphere and service. Decently priced for the food and the atmosphere. Recommended to make a booking if you go on a Friday night. Fried ice cream is a hit. Only other Thai place that serves fried ice cream is at Holy Basil (that I know of).

A well decorated and very spacious restaurant. The restaurant is always buzzing with customers as their food is absolutely wonderful. Their menu is extensive and the service is next level. The flavours in their food are genuine representations of true Thai food. I have re-visited this place many times and I highly recommend the Massaman Lamb Shank curry and definitely don't forget to order a Banana Flower Salad

Good Thai food, reasonably priced. It was not busy when I got there early in the evening. Curry was very flavorful. Portions are ok. Over all, good

Good value. Solid Thai food offering. The crispy snapper served on a mountain of green papaya salad was the most mouthwatering dish. We were there on a Sunday for lunch and it was very quiet, apparently because all their Sunday orders are through uber eats!

I couldnt try my friends dishes because of covid so can only comment on my own, which was meant to be a pineapple fried rice with tofu but they forgot the tofu :( so it was just mostly rice

I really liked the food here. Tom yum seafood was especially good. Nice and spicy with a good selection of seafood. Staff are very efficient and follow all social distancing rules.

This place is just behind the world square. You've got to try out their special starters, fruit shakes and desserts!

Good place for group dinner. Plenty of space and food was quick to be served, especially the chicken Pad Thai. The fried icecream was very nice as well. Overall, am satisfied.

This is my first time eat at this restaurant. I ordered thai fried rice. I love their food. The taste is delicious and the portion is great. Happy tummy and yummy. The service is good.

Yummmy... That duck curry was to die for, seriously so so good. Duck was deep fried so crispy, sauce was so intense and deep in flavour. Other dishes were alright too.

I’ve never expected that this Thai restaurant was so generous that every dish I had was pretty large servings.

The restaurant located at level 2 of the civic hotel. I’ve never spotted it until I came across on Zomato. The restaurants have many seatings available. Suitable for either 2-3 people or big groups.

[Thai fish cake] $9.9
We start from this dish. The fish cake was thick. It was served with spicy sauces.

[Banana Flower Salad w crispy chicken] $16.9
Strange salad, in Thai style. Corridor, lemongrass, shallot, cashew nut and so on.

[Crab meat fried rice] $16.9
The serving was toooo big. We two can only finish half of it. The taste of the fried rice is OK, but not special in my opinion.

Will may eat ✊
will May eat ✊

Food - sister restaurant of Holy Basil. Thai food with the famous fried ice cream which remains generous (as opposed to the smaller servings at Holy Basil now)
Venue - upstairs in Civc Hotel, plenty of seating.
Price - around $20 pp

Nice spacious restaurant upstairs of the Civic Hotel. Great service with generous servings. I found their food was quite sweet but overall it’s not a bad Thai restaurant, in terms of ambiance, service & value for money. 🙂

Their Slow cooked pork knuckle was cooked perfectly, crispy skin with fork tender meat, but I wasn’t into the chilli caramel sauce, it was a bit sweet, almost tasted like sweet & sour sauce. 😗 Pad see ew had nice wok hei but again they added too much sweetness in the dish, a bit different compared with others. 😐 Money bags also using all the sweet ingredients, such as sweet potato, taro, coconut, corns & peas with a sweet plum sauce. Everything was sweet, a little out of balance. 😬

For dessert, the Durian sticky rice was sweetness all way through. (kind of expected after tasting the entree & the mains) Usually in the sticky rice dessert, you can taste a little bit saltiness in the sticky rice to cut down the sweetness from the fruit & coconut sauce, but not really at Peppercorn... 😬

Wow. We have been on a really good run of restaurants of late and Peppercorn @the civic is no exception. This joint is our new favourite Thai restaurant, although it’s really more Laotian. Our run of visits to good restaurants is partly due to some great apps on the market at the moment. We have used Pokitpal a number of times lately, no vouchers needed, just visit one of their venues use your registered mastercard and the discount amount will be credited to your account. This app is ideal for a business lunch situation.

Was expecting a bit more from this place! Duck red curry was very tasty loaded with duck and veges that soaked up all the flavour of the sauce. Crispy Pork belly was crispy on the outside succulent on the inside but sweet soy sauce was slightly overpowering and veges too soft for my liking. Pad thai slightly dry and lacked flavour. Service was good and atmosphere nice and spacious.

Although Peppercorn is slightly far from the cbd vicinity it's worth going! I've been a few times and like how the food has good flavour and are decently priced. They have interesting drinks, the one we ordered was served in a tea set! The apple salad was exactly what I wanted, refreshing and light. The fried icecream was amazing! The outer coating was crispy and the portion was very generous. I like the added toasted coconut for texture. The let down were the pandan pancakes which were drenched in syrup and were so sickly sweet we did not finish them.
GobbleDok
It's good thai food place! The place is casual but modern atmosphere, and the price range is great too.

I generally have curry or pat thai, I love both. Food come out quickly, can use for quick lunch or relax dinner.

Thaitastic at Peppercorn

A Thai restaurant lies hidden in Civic hotel lies a great restaurant that serve awesome Thai food. I had a great experience dining there and would come back again. The staff was friendly, the environment feels Retro and the food was spot on!

I had chili jam fried rice with beef, we also got the Thai beef salad but forgot to take a picture. They gave us a pretty good serving and by the end of your meal, we were satisfied.

(To be continued?

Love this place. I went once a few years ago when they were located in Shark Bar and was pleasantly surprised that the food quality and expansion of their menu when I visited 2 weeks ago. The cuisine is Laos and northern Thai food which is a lot spicier than traditional Thai food.
My favourite fish is Sai Groag (aka Sai Oua or Sai Krok) which is best described as a spicy and tangy with herb sausage that I’ve only found in two other places in Sydney. It rivals the Sai Oua from the street carts in Thailand. My husband and I noticed that the Thai dishes we usually have had a spicier more tomato based flavour such as the Pad Thai and garlic pepper stir fry. Service was friendly and prices reasonable compared some of the restaurants on the north shore where I live. I’ve heard and read their desserts are amazing but was too full from starters and mains. I have relatives in Blacktown and Fairfield area who go to their other branches out west on a regular basis. Highly recommended.

Spectacular Thai food with affordable price. We love almost everything we ordered. The banana flower salad was really creamy and nice. We also love the Tom yum soup and the crispy fish with tamarind sauce. As promised, the fish was crispy. Sauce was nice and not too overpowering just complement the fish. The red duck was creamy and yummy too !!! Highly recommended !!!
Hungry Vibes Only
Great atmosphere and service! We found the tastes to vary from its Fairfield eatery, and the ox tongue didn’t deliver the usual flavours.

Deep fried ice cream and durian ice cream were very nice!

My husband, son and I came here for an early dinner tonight and we enjoyed our dinner and walked out so full although one of the dishes we ordered was slightly disappointing.

We shared their fresh spring rolls which had tofu, crab and veggies in plum sauce. This was a nice start to our dinner dinner. They have a cocktail special of $12 from 5-7 which we took advantage of and I tried their mojito which was refreshing. The main we both really enjoye would definitely be their slow cooked pork knuckle which came out impressive on the table and had lovely crispy skin and tender meat. I just wanted to grab the bone with my hand and rip the meat off!
I was so full just eating this but we still had another main which they firstly got wrong and there was a big wait for it (that was fine as we were too busy with the pork knuckle) and then when the dish came out we specifically asked for no peanuts on their marinated bbq beef with papaya salad as my husband is allergic but in their haste to redo the dish they added peanuts! Luckily my husband was too full so he just grabbed some of the bbq beef to taste. Some pieces was really chewy and we were so full that we asked to take away the rest. (50c for takeaway container).

We ended the night with their fried ice cream which the three of us demolished in less than a minute! I definitely want to come back to try some of their other dishes!

With so many Thai restaurants in the vicinity, who would've thought of the one above the pub being one of the best ones around. Sat night and it was only half full, but my friends tell me that was incredibly unusual as the place is usually packed to the brim on weekend. The food came out pretty quickly, and everything we ordered were delicious, my fav was the Duck Plum, but they were all good. The drinks were nice as well, but it was a little on the sweet side, so a little heavy to accompany dinner. Definitely recommended & will return.
Sweet Tooth
Nice decoration of the restaurant, but the dishes taste really normal. Also, the amount of the food is quite small. It got 4.2 grade on Zomato, but we felt little bit disappointed.
Coffee.lover
Nice Thai food and consistent quality.
The new lunch menu offered on Mondays to Wednesday’s is a bargain at $12.90 for a meal & drink.
The stir fries are reocmmended
Picturesque Food
A hidden restaurant upstairs with a surprisingly welcoming ambience once you walk up the dark stairs. The food was great at Green Peppercorn! Quality matching the original in Fairfield.
Staff were very helpful and accommodating.

I've always wanted to try out this place since ages, since they're known to serve a good food with a good ambience and the good thing about this restaurant is that it open till 10/11pm depends on the day. It also has a big space so great for party and gathering. Marinated Dried Beef - $11.90. I expected a lot from the good review here and there but turn out to be quiet disappointed as the beef was so chewy and can't really swallow it properly and can't really finish it at last.

We ordered 4 dishes between the wife and I and have found all of them were quite salty. Food wasn't authentic at all. Didn't really enjoy our night here. There are plenty of other Thai restaurants around the area that serve up authentic Thai food.
Lily
Been here a couple of times. Very unassuming place above a pub. Very good value for money, decent portion size, flavours are mostly consistent. Service is friendly and attentive. Wouldn't mind coming back for the pork knuckle!
MUHAHAHA
Food is really good - thought a bit salty.

LOVE their pandan waffle as dessert and crispy noodle!!

Have been many times and will always come back!!

Came for a Friday night dinner with work friends and was seated quickly. Food was served quickly and efficiently. We ordered the beef pad kee Mao, banana blossom salad, pork belly and Lao sausages. Liked every dish, although I do think close competitor Holy Basil edged out Green Peppercorn in the pork belly battle as it just wasn’t as tasty or flavourful. They had a drinks special where you could order 2 refreshers for 12: avoid at all costs, the drink was more ice than juice. Terrible waste of money. Overall, a good meal but nothing really stood out to me.

Everything I ate here was amazing. It was a hot day and the restaurant felt stuffy which made their fried ice cream a must have. Hands down the best I have eaten and I have been raving about it since. It's a huge portion but the sweetness to savoury balance was great and I enjoyed every bite. I also tried their ox tongue, sausage, pad thai, pork belly, beef salad and duck red curry - delicious. Central location and close to World Square. It's a must visit.

This place is hard to find from the outside since its upstairs from where the hotel is. Arriving inside it was really spacious with many small and long tables. We were seated near the windows which was nice and the staff are very friendly. We ordered the pineapple fried rice and the pad see ew. The pad see ew had a lot of oil towards the bottom of the plate and the pineapple fried rice...I would have liked it if there were more pineapples, but it was still good.
Would recommend and come again. :)
Lily Chu
The food was great, service was good. Just the music was super super loud. The portions were just right for me. However the duck dish was a bit too spicy to me. But I believe for spicy eaters out there it would be no problem. But would recommend friends for the food.

This is long overdue review.
I always like the food here, tonight we ordered red duck curry, pineapple fried rice, chicken with basil and green peppercorns.
Duck curry is always my fave, on top of that, the fried rice... Soooooooooo yummy. The chef cooked the rice with the hint of turmeric and pineapple chunks, makes a two humble ingredients become star of the dish.
Chicken dish was really tasty, thai basil is the hero comes along the chicken as our main choice of protein for tonight.
Move along to dessert, well... Where can I start?......
Those deep fried ice cream... To die for! Served with roasted coconut muesli and rich caramel (I'm guessing from brown sugar) sauce.
Pandan cream brulee.... Soooooooooo unresistable creamy and texture so smooth... baked to perfection!
Save the best for last, coconut lava dessert with mango sorbet, just a perfect way to end the hot summer night with happy ending! Oh yeah!!!

Thai Feast 🍨
A party of 14 people for a work friend's 21st birthday. Staff was super nice and friendly. Birthday girl gets ID checked and receives a free dessert of choice. Ordered a variety of entrees and mains to share between a group of 5 to make sharing and caring food easier.

Entrees & mains:
•Pad kee mao
•Pineapple fried rice
•Salt & pepper calamari
•Cripsy pork belly
•Panang curry

Drinks & dessert
•Thai milk tea w/ whipped cream
•Deep-fried ice cream

The pad kee mao, salt & pepper calamari and deep-fried ice cream were my favourites of the night. The pad kee mao was a little bit spicy from the chili yet fragrant from the basil. The salt & pepper calamari was crunchy but still full of flavour.

The deep fried ice cream was on point with the caramel sauce and coconut muesli; the portion was also quite large. Much prefer it to Holy Basil's infamous deep-fried ice cream. My least favourite was the pineapple fried rice, I think it was just the addition of sultanas in it otherwise would be a great dish and my other friends did enjoy the dish.

YUM. YUM. YUM. Have eaten here twice and absolutely loved every single dish. The Lao Sausages, Betel Leaves & Lao Pawpaw Salad were a highlight 👌🏻 Great service and a beautifully restored restaurant with a fun little bar out back. Don't skip dessert either. Highly recommend this Laotian treasure!

Really bad customer service! Organised a team lunch of 20 people here, food was served on the table even before we arrived. The main Guy (Not sure of his name) who was running the show didn't have even basic courtesy of how to talk to people, instead was rude to my colleague. He had so much negative energy that even the other waitress had not even a little smile on their face but a Grin for sure. Food was average, ordered for Tom Yum fried rice...was served with pineapple(for 2 of us) even though we didn't ask for it. we were not even served water, until we asked for it couple of times. Answer to all this mess was "It's Friday afternoon" and we are fully booked, who is not??? that doesn't mean that you forget to serve a customer. I saw few people leaving, because they were not being served for long....Never gonna visit this place again!

Efficient and friendly staff. The basil fried rice was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend. The curry was very flavoursome and went well with the spicy rice. The soup was my least favourite, but that's to my personal liking as I prefer a less salty and more sour soup. My partner did enjoy the soup a lot though.
Love At First Bite
Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus

Green Peppercorn is a Thai restaurant located in the Sydney CBD that does great authentic Thai food at affordable prices. We came here for a casual dinner on a Friday night and had to wait a while for our table, they were quite packed as usual. For my main I ordered the Khao Pad, chicken fried rice with egg, onion, tomato, garlic, oriental vegetables and shallots. This was delicious, the fried rice was slightly moist and full of flavour and there was generous portions of juicy chicken and vegetables.

Been here a few times but quite disappointed with the last visit. Had the clear chicken broth but it was way too sour and herbal, chicken was overcooked. The chef speciality duck was drowned in a salty sauce. Had to wash each piece of duck in water before eating
Mary Tran
This place will never disappoint as all the flavours of each dish delivered. The Pad Thai is much better than Holy Basil's because it's more saucy. Ox tongue was also perfectly cooked. Prices are moderately ok if you eat with a large group of people and split the bill. Would definitely come back if I'm craving Thai food in the city
Leon
A chic and impressively decorated restaurant in Chinatown which emphasises style over substance, a perpetual and recurrent theme of Sydney's dining scene which promises but under delivers. This begs the question whether chefs do quality checks on their food before serving them to diners who simply desire a comforting and fuss-free dinner.

I paid $40+ for a traditional Laotian grilled chicken and pineapple fried rice but was served with a reheated/microwaved version three minutes after order. The meat was cold whereas the edges were dry and hard. The pineapple fried rice fared no better - Rice was soggy (Probably too much water cooking the rice but they served them anyway) and pineapples were canned ones/processed. Hard to imagine this was rated 4.2/5.

Tried Green Peppercorn on the recommendation of a colleague. I ordered the pad ke mao pork, starting off with chicken satay. What can I say, the food was very tasty and plentiful. My colleague had her dish, can't remember the name of the dish but, it looked delicious.

Food: Very nice, the taste left in your mouth will be savoured long after you've left.

Ambience: Great open plan, lots of seating and natural light. Not to mention, you're right in the heart of the city.

Price: Little more pricey than your usual Thai but, you only live once, enjoy.

The best dishes we had tonight were:
Crispy Snapper Mango Salad, Ox Tongue, Crispy Pork Belly, Marinated Beef BBQ Cuts and the Pandan Sticky Rice. The Mango Sticky Rice would have made the best dishes list but unfortunately mangoes were out of season. We also ordered the Scallops which was a Chef's Special dish but they were out of scallops too :(

The other dishes we ordered were very enjoyable but nothing out of the ordinary: Red Duck Curry, Pineapple Fried Rice, Thai Papaya Salad, Black Sticky Rice and Coconut Sticky Rice (yup, we ordered all the sticky rice options for dessert!) and Pandan Creme Brûlée
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
“We might have a modern setting, but the food is authentic. I’m not sous viding any meats,” laughs Tona Inthavong. He’s talking me through the Green Peppercorn story at their inner city venue upstairs at the Civic Hotel. It’s a story that started with his family growing their own food to survive in a Thai refugee camp, when they emigrated to Australia during the Laotian Civil War; and has resulted in two brothers each having a successful restaurant group (Tony Inthavong owns Holy Basil). As you delve into the extensive menu here, you’ll taste parts of the Inthavong story, though it’s likely none will impress quite so much as the handmade Lao Sausages ($11.90). Cooked on the charcoal barbeque, these moist, flavoursome sausages are made from Tona's father’s recipe, and even more delicious when dipped in his mother’s special nahm jim style sauce. Green Peppercorn’s menu presents both Laotian and Thai cuisine. Tona describes the two as “sister countries” though he points out Thai cuisine has more creamy, Chinese influences. Laotian is in fact closest to Issan food, from Thailand’s Northeast. Laotian food is spicier, more pungent, more bitter and earthy according to Tona, something you can taste for yourself in the...

Follow my insta @burgersnbikinis

Oh Green Peppercorn, how I'm so proud of your Western Suburbs roots and how you've branched out to serve the good people of the CBD some solid Thai food.

Located up a few flights up artfully decorated stairwells in the Civic Hotel, you'd never even know there...

Green Peppercorn is often compared to Holy Basil. I was told that it is as good as Holy Basil. After giving it a try, I'd say it's food is 0.5 points behind Holy. Nevertheless, it is still one of the best Thais in the CBD area. Less crowded than Holy Basil, if you're after an unrushed dinner and less noisy atmosphere, Peppercorn would be better than Holy. Good staff service. Food are reasonably priced. For massaman beef, I'd recommend Home Thai though. The green creme brulee dessert was delicious!
FoodieYim
Excellent service! The presentation of the food was great. Wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink available to choose from. Their banana flower salad was quite special. It seems to be a popular dish as it was almost sold out when my friend and I went there. Their Masaman curry (lamb) was not bad. The sauce was flavoursome and good to go with steam or sticky rice. The meat was nice and tender. The marinated BBQ Beef cut is quite nice. It's slight tough, but still good.

Was recommended to check out this restaurant by two different people so had to give it a go. It didn't disappoint! The crispy pork belly and Lao sausage were especially good!

Head toward the Civic Hotel along Pitt St, head up the stairwell and you'll find yourself in Green Peppercorn, one of my favourite Lao/Thai restaurants in Sydney CBD. The restaurant has quite a nice set up, I thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere here on a busy Friday/Saturday night with friends.

I particularly love the Charcoal BBQ Ox Tongue, Lao Sausages, Roast Duck Red Curry and Chilli Basil Fried Rice. That being said, every other dish I've ordered here is still really good! I have never had a single bad dish from Green Peppercorn.

Oh and dessert here is a must try! Please try the Deep Fried Ice Cream and Pandan Waffles. They're so good! Whenever I take family here from overseas for the first time, both these desserts are always a big hit! Highly recommended!

Green Peppercorn isn't the easiest place to find in the Thai district of Sydney CBD, but it's certainly worth the effort to get there! Simply go up a flight of stairs inside The Civic Hotel and there it is, restaurant and bar area. If it's full (which happens a lot) don't fret - just put your name down and settle in at the bar till it's your turn. It won't be long and the drinks are worth it anyway.

Great place to hang out with family and friends. We went there for Mum's birthday, staff was very friendly, service was great and speed of food cooking was fast too. We ordered 6 dishes and all were on around the same time. When we ask for the birthday cake, the staff brought out singing happy birthday song and a drum. Mum was very happy and we all ad a great night. Will recommend to others for sure!

Went here for a work outing, and we definitely had a good time!
Classy Thai. Good service. Good ambiance.
The dessert menu is amazing! I recommend the pandan creme burlee or sticking rice with mango.

Nice Thai restaurant. A bit difficult to find. We ordered the curry roasted duck and the stir fried chilli and basil. The duck was superb! We end with sitcky rice with mango and icecream and it was really good compared to any average Thai restaurant but maybe a little bit too sweet. Overall a very good Thai restaurant. Highly recommended!
Princess Greedy Guts
A nice Thai place for a quick dinner with friends or family. A good variety of choices which are nicely presented with good flavours & value. The desserts are nice but quite sweet & definitely more then your standard Thai restaurant desserts.
Elmocookie
A popular choice for Sydney siders (apparently). Started with some fish cakes and ox tongue complimented by the pineapple express drink (a large pina colada in a pineapple). Had the beef salad which had way more beef than salad and crispy noodles. Had a nice large seating area but it was terribly difficult to hear the other side of the table thanks to the echo's! Desserts were too sweet but full of flavour. Overall I guess I expected more but a decent place nonetheless.
Michael Li
To be honest, this place to me is like a 2nd Holy Basil. It's no coincidence that I gave them both the same rating/5. When you're done with Holy Basil, you'd come here to Green Peppercorn! Hidden upstairs near World Square, the environment breathes thai, and the service is efficient and above average. Got my booking for 4 easily with no fuss.

Ordered the pad thai (staple dish that I always have to try in a thai restaurant) for $13 which is stock standard price, but the flavours were definitely there for what I paid. Got the satay skewers for $11, and the pineapple chicken fried rice for $13, and that was above average.

Would I recommend? Yes, for a group outing, this is your place since booking allowed, and quite spacious on the 2nd floor!
Lucyellaa
Regular go to place at night in the city! Always craving the pandan waffles with coconut icecream! They also have a little back bar if you don't want to eat and just have a drink with an open air ceiling!
Melissa Gabriele
I love every dish that I ordered, but since I have a sweet tooth, my favorite is the dessert menu. I love the fried ice cream and the pandan waffle. It is the perfect way to end my evening. Love, love, love the pandan so much!
Esther Sung Hee Lee
Came here for dessert and tea. Ordered Pandan Creme brulee and the Pandan sticky rice. OMG YUM!!Bit pricey $13 per dish but worth it. Will be back. pandan cravings...

Dinner here tonight was a pleasant experience. We started with chicken wings and vegetarian spring rolls. The wings were good and crispy fried with a really good dipping sauce as for the spring rolls average.

We then had the mango salad which was fresh and had so much flavour. We also had the pineapple fried rice and Thai fried rice both with vegetables. Both the rice dishes were good portion sizes. We also ordered the vegetables in chilli basil sauce.

The portion size is excellent and the variety really good. Was hoping they had the deep fried ice cream for dessert. Didn't get a chance to try it as we were full from the entrees and mains.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
The benefits of dining in a group is that you get to try so many more dishes, which is especially perfect for a restaurant like Green Peppercorn.

Located in the Civic Hotel, it's much more upmarket than your local suburban Thai, and distinguished by its spacious layout.

All meals are beautifully presented; the deep fried whole snapper was a stand-out dish. And the desserts are amazing; there are traditional Thai dishes such as sticky rice with mango, and classics such as panna cotta are given a makeover with Asian flavours.
BukanOtotTapiLemak
This has got to be one of my fav thai restaurant in CBD. Came for the pandan creme brulee which was awesome, hint of pandan flavour and not too sweet, and turns out the food were awesome. The only complain i could say is that yhe Ox tongue was a bit hard. Love the bbq chicken and vege crackling pork. Will come back for sure for next trip to sydney.

I've heard about Dessert here from friends so many time and I'm glad to come here finally!

It's located in Pitt street, near world square.
It was busying around 8pm on Friday.
If you want to dinner I defs recommend you to book in advance unless you don't mind waiting.

I took the staff recommendation and were right!
Pandan panna cotta and fried icecream with berry sauce. The portion was large and good to share.
I can enjoy pandan flavour very much and was satifsfied. Fried icecream can be recommendated to everyone!! It was delicious. Warm outside and cold and a bit melting icecream were good combination.

There are so many Thai restaurants in this part of the city but Green Peppercorn the Thai/Laotian restaurant above Civic hotel really does stand above the rest. The ambience is so inviting, the staff are extremely attentive and the food is just amazing.
We had chicken wings, Lao sausage, beef jerky and fried rice.
Fantastic experience and will definitely be back. This is a must visit restaurant to locals and visitors.

Fresh and delicious and a generally nice vibe for lunch, though it started to get a bit noisy as the restaurant filled up and there was some weird construction noises. We had the pad thai, a perfect rendition of the dish, with peanuts and chili in a small dish to sprinkle, lemon, and loads of bean sprouts and herbs. Also a very nice ginger vegetable vegetarian stir fry. I'll come back to try the Lao dishes. $40 for the two of us, two dishes and two glasses of passable white wine.

I came to this place a while ago. The restaurant was a bit hard to find as it is on the second floor of the pub. The food tasted great and authentic. However, the level of the noise from other tables made it a bit hard to chat that I practically had to speak loudly for my friend to hear. I probably take away next time if I really want to eat Thai food here.
Fernando
The Roast Duck Red Curry is a must try!!

Was recommended by a friend.

We ordered the roast duck red curry, pad Thai, fried rice and chilli basil fried rice.

The food came out really quick. The service was good and food was really good. The curry had the right amount of sweet, sour and spicy. The portions were good and the 4 dishes were just right for 4 hungry people!!

Definitely going there again!!

We booked the courtyard area for a networking event and everyone loved this place. The staff were incredible and very hospitable and they were flexible with making arrangements.

The food is so delicious! I often find that Thai food can be too oily, but that's definitely not a problem I've had here. The service was really fast and friendly. Also the tables are nice and big so there's enough room for your plates and for when you're sharing dishes! The only downside is that the music was too loud and so people were trying to talk over it and each other. We ended up not talking much as a result, which defeats the point of going to dinner with friends.
Would definitely recommend Green Peppercorn!

Food is delicious. Service is fast and friendly.
Ive been here twice and it lived up to its hype.

The food is decently priced for its cbd location and portions are big enough to share.

The red currys + green curry is good, pad thai is alrightt (7/10?). Really would like to try pad see ew. And the dessert menu (especially pandan creme brulee) is a must try!

Also i recommend everyone to get the thai milk tea! Sooo good! :)

Definitely one the best thai places I've been to in Sydney! The presentation is marvelous and the taste is definitely above average. We ordered quite a few dishes but my fabourite would have to be the crispy noodle. I found the prices to be very reasonable given its location in the cbd as well. This is definitely a place I will be coming back to visit!

My favourite thai restaurant in Sydney. The food is non-oily and you won't feel sick at all after eating. The green curry and pad thai are my favourite. Tastes healthy yet full of flavour. The food is definitely good for price! Friendly service and efficient staff. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice thai restaurant in the city. The restaurant is spacious with a nice layout :) Thank you green peppercorn!

I love Green Peppercorn!!!! Their menu is great and big!! So much to choose from! We always get the BBQ Chicken, Crab Fried Rice and Pork Belly! Can never go wrong with those! But then again everything else we've had is quite yummy!!

The price and quantity is affordable and generous! And their drinks menu 😱😱😱 a range to choose from, from non alcoholic to alcoholic ones. The dessert menu is pretty big too! Lots to choose from 😋

Service is quick and efficient. Definitely a top pick if you're ever feeling like Thai in the city!!!

Came here last weekend for lunch catch up. We ordered Roast Scallops (Chef Special) with banana flower salad and sambal disc. This dish is good, and have rooms for improvements. We also ordered Chili & Basil Fried Rice with Prawns which tasted very nice. I recommend you to order this Fried Rice if you are new to GP. For more adventurous eater like myself, Crunchy Rice Salad is interesting to try. The rice was cooked until some of it parts are dry and crunchy. I personally like the combination of crunchy rice, laos sausages and tangy flavour of lemons. Something Different and not too heavy. Pairs well with the Roast Duck Red Curry, which tasted really rich but not empowering. The star of all dishes would have been the Pandan Creme Brulee (not for sharing). Not too sweet and not too creamy. Just perfect. You don't want to share the Brulee, Trust me. Special Thanks for the Venue Manager, for The Great Service and The complimentary PopTail - an infusion of Moscato/Champagne with an Ice Pop made of Real Fruit Compotes. This drink will be on future bar menu really really soon. Don't be shy and ask for it nicely. Price wise, it was slightly expensive but you get what you paid for. Will come back to try other dishes.

Ordered the ox tongue and it was very very nice, would absolutely recommend.. A little chewy at times but flavour is awesome. Their Thai milk tea is also very nice.. Still haven't tried the fried ice-cream, next time!

More pricey than Fairfield restaurant but expected for a city location. Came here 9pm on a Saturday night. Service was decent. Food came fast. Ordered chicken skewers (not that great), salt and pepper squid (can't go wrong!) and chicken pad Thai (super yum).

My friends got the pineapple express which was nice and sweet. You can barely taste the Alcohol. We also got the avocado shakes which tasted so delicious too.

All in all. Pretty good thai food.
Jewel Eats
Thai bar and restaurant that serves some authentic Thai and issan cuisine. It also has a little beer garden complete with a rickshaw and Christmas lightings.. Very authentic.. The food itself is generous and tasty. Getting more popular these days so please book in advance.

went there because we had great meals at its Fairfield HQ therefore we had quite high expectations.

However we were left quite disappointed with the flavours or maybe we ordered the wrong dishes.

The betel leaf was one of worst we had around. The filling was on the crunchy side and lacks flavour and the leaf overpowered others.

The raw salmon skewer salad was quite wet, flavour is ok but not quite Thai?

The char grill chicken portion quite small but the sauce was really good and punchy.

Last the piece de resistance is the slow roast pork knuckle. in order to make the skin crunchy, the meat was left quite dry only the innermost remained moist. the sauce was quite sweet but has hint of heat...

This place gave a mixed feeling that it's not very authentic from the surrounding Thai restaurants in the area. So will I go back? Not really unless couldn't think of other places but Chat Thai, Holy Basil, @ Bangkok, Yok Yor etc. would come way ahead of this place.

I was blown away when I was shown by a friend this little hidden-away gem. As an avid-Thai food lover, this place blew my mind. And just WAIT for the desserts. Fried Ice Cream Sandwich and Matcha Green Tea Waffles?! I think I genuinely died and went to heaven. #brbdrooling

Been here a few times, really like the food service and ambience here. Its one of the fancier thai/laos restaurants near Chinatown with comfortable seating you can easily sit here for longer time and chat. Food is cooked very well: favourite dishes are ox tongue, banana leaf salad and their desserts - hello fried ice cream! Mocktails are also very nice and reasonably priced. Service is friendly and didn't have to wait very long for food to come out.

The food here is really good. We had the penang curry and it was scrumptious. Just wish it came with rice. We had to order that separately ($3.50). We also had the banana flower salad and that was good too but I felt like they put in too much chicken for the amount of salad in the dish.
The pandan brûlée was lovely too but pretty pricey at $14. All in all, this place serves really good Thai food.
The decor in this restaurant was also nice, and they accommodated big groups of ten too.

Great food. Excellent service.. I've been to both the city and Fairfield restaurants. The roast duck red curry was great; highly recommended. Also tried the pork knuckle. The meat was tender and juicy, and although it was a little sweet to my taste, I still enjoyed it very much. I just tucked in to the meat that wasn't sitting in the sauce.

Green Peppercorn is one of the more popular Thai places in Sydney, more-so in it's western suburbs. This has been a long overdue visit, as we have unintentionally continued to put it off to "next week"! Finally we both had the cravings for Thai food, and there is no way we are lining up at Chat Thai on a Friday night! Gave us plenty of reason to try Green Peppercorn, located in the Civic Hotel across from World Square!

Came here for the pandas waffles.. But, ordered the black sesame creme brûlée as well! Oh it was so good!!! Soo yum!! 😋 a must try! Must eat.. The pandas waffles on the other hand smelled divine but tasted average..

Probably the best thai in CBD. The manager was so friendly and helped us to request herb free for some dishes. Been there to try quite a few different dishes and I love all of them. My friend ordered the slow roasted pork knuckle from the chef's special menu and it just tastes amazing. Yuzu lemonade is my must-order drink.

Just 2 of us for dinner; roast scallops, pork belly & water spinach, vege fried rice. Do not over-order here, because they have a massive dessert menu!

Roast scallops come on the shell, on top of banana flower salad & with cavier on top. About $18 for 5, compares well with typical steamed scallop prices.

Pork belly is one of their most popular dishes - always crisp, the water spinach savory with garlic & yellow beans without the overpowering dried shrimp that some other places use.

Fried rice is full of egg & veges & not at all sugary like some Thai rice dishes can be.

We're so used to just-OK service that it's extra nice when wait staff are gracious and responsive and efficient at the same time, which has been the case whenever I've been here. The food arrives quickly too.

Desserts were the *must have* Pandan Creme Brulee, and Vanilla Panna Cotta which was also nice. If you're out late & just want dessert, head here since they have a huge variety of desserts and being part of a pub, a great drink menu.

I've also been with groups, incl. work lunches of 30 people. They're good with big groups, if you're well organised and pre-order. Some of the other dishes I've liked are the red duck curry, lamb chops, and fried snapper with mango/apple salad.

Green Peppercorn isn't the cheapest Thai place I know, but on balance it's the one I enjoy the most.

A cozy, well-lit place to hang out over some good Thai food located in the heart of CBD, on top of the Civic Hotel. Friendly and quick staffs. Some recommended dishes are the bbq chicken, crispy pro belly with stir fried kang kong, and banana flower salad. Love the banana flower salad, if you haven't tried it before, this is the place to try it! I also tried the ox-tongue, however some of them are really tough. For dessert, I have tried the fried dough with pandan custard and ice cream, pandan waffle and coconut ice cream, and pandan creme brûlée which was a complimentary dish. Love the pandan waffle the most, it's soft and marries well with the sauce and ice cream!

Had a group of 25 for dinner and the range of food available was great. The food tasted very nice especially the curry. Great experience. Would come back next time.

We were welcomed with a big and genuine smile, and these days it's priceless. I ordered the Lao sausages and they were excellent! My friends all got a Panang curry and they all loved their meal.
The service was very good; our waiter was very attentive and very efficient. We barely waited to be served after we ordered.
We'll be back!

Back at the Cvic Hotel GP last night - the new dishes tried were chicken feet salad, scallops steamed on the shell and charcoal grilled chicken, lovely. The place was packed with many groups especially the twenty somethings and families. Dishes came out efficiently and service was with a smile. After dinner we had opportunity to check out Thai town along lower Pitt Street in downtown Sydney.

The best penang curry I have ever had. I just wish it was a bit bigger. Rice also has to be bought separately. I ordered pork but they gave me chicken. I didn't notice until half way through because it tasted so good, and I didn't bother complaining about it. This restaurant gets pretty busy during lunch time so booking is essential.

Caution - the chilies are hotter here than in most other restaurants in Australia, but let us proceed. The Miang Kum or betel nut leaf wraps, with finely prepared fresh ingredients, so easy and light on the appetite, came out like miniature flower bouquets. Oh yes, there was much generosity in providing so much to wrap the dark green leaves in. We could detect peanuts, crab meat, fried shrimps, crunchy rice, small tomato cubes, chilli, ginger and lime as we bit into the wraps. Healthy, exotic and stimulating!Petite, colourful and healthy, this dish was like eating from garden produce. However, we were in down town Sydney, with the World Square sign clamouring for attention through our early 20th century bay window, looking down at a busy Goulburn Street leading to Chinatown and Darling Harbour. We were fortunate to have been allocated a side round dining table, to me it was both at the same time grand and cosy. After climbing two flights of stairs to the first level, from a side entrance to the Civic Hotel along Pitt Street, we entered another world, Indo-Chinese, with a Buddhist presence, where fresh aromatics and the art of marinating meats reign supreme. Spicy food with alcohol on a Friday evening to de-stress and recover from the corporate world? This is the place.

Overall a nice friendly place, the food was nice, flavourful and fresh. Peppercorn is a same family from Holy basil but had disagreements so they branched off and opened Peppercorn, so if you see similarities that's why.To me its a bit average because its not always consistent and the quality change here and there. I'm disappointed with the dessert selections, also I had old cake on one visit. The price is decent (cheaper than holy basil) but its located inside a tavern so not a lot of parking space on the venue but heaps on the streets.

Dat deep fried ice cream. My goodness it was good especially with the granola and the caramel sauce it was sheer perfection. I highly recommend the dessert. Food wise I had the pad see iew and it was pretty good too. The ice cream was the star of the show though.

This Thai and Lao restaurant has grown in stature in the past few months, I was most excited about the desserts but was surprised at the selection of mains and cocktails. For me, most Thai places ruin dishes by adding too much sweetness however at Green Peppercorn, the balance between sweetness, spiciness and heat was on point. The specials kept things really interesting but the menu also including Thai staples

{ _anne_with_an_e // review }
I’ve been to Green Peppercorn in the city on a few occasions and each visit has been pleasant. It’s always been quite busy but the service was always friendly and helpful.

This place is popular for their desserts - and rightly so! Their fried ice-cream is delicious (close to or on par with Holy Basil’s), but the pandan creme brûlée takes the cake! This dessert would be one that I’d be coming back for again and again. The pad see ew was the best I’ve ever had, and for the life of me can’t remember which curry we ordered that was so morish (either the roast duck or masaman).

All the dishes were tasty and nicely presented - great for sharing. Ranked in my top 5 Thai restaurants in Sydney.

Must haves // pandan creme brûlée, fried ice-cream, pad see ew, roast duck curry (from memory)
Notable // crispy snapper, thai fried rice

Food: 4/5
Ambience: 4/5
Service: 4/5

I have been to this branch of Green Peppercorn on numerous occasions, and I was not disappointed on my last visit with my extended family. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the ox tongue (cooked to perfection and was not chewy or hard), Thai papaya salad, roast duck red curry and chicken pad thai. Each dish was generous in portion and packed with flavour, which left all six of us feeling very satisfied. We missed out on trying their signature green tea creme brûlée because we were so full, but we're definitely coming back for it! Despite it being a busy Saturday during the Queen's birthday long weekend, the service was efficient and super friendly.

I went to Green Peppercorn last night with a group of friends after work. The restaurant is beautiful and very comfortable. My friends and I ordered the $45 banquet dinner. It was delicious. The food was amazing. Each dish had a generous serving and presented beautifully. My highlights were the snapper with mango salad, the duck salad, the massman curry and the desserts. Actually everything was pretty good. The service was also amazing. I could not recommend this place enough and look forward to going again soon.

Dessert menu. I've been to the Fairfield Green Peppercorn for dinner but wasn't too impressed with the meal (my review is on Urbanspoon too). Fortunately, my dessert experience at the Civic branch was positive. We ordered the black sesame creme brulee and the pandan waffles with coconut sorbet - both were generous serves and deliciously more-ish. It's definitely one of the better options for late-night coffee and dessert in Chinatown, a welcome alternative to the numerous chocolate cafes and bubble tea offerings. Bonus: the dessert menu is 4 pages long with one page dedicated to a variety of ice-cream sundaes.

Marinate your taste buds with juicy ox tongue and laos sausage to begin. Toss with a chilli basil & garlic dish and a side of tom yum fried rice. Garnish with the rather ordinary pandan & coconut waffles.
