Review The Hero Of Waterloo - Sydney

Nikki Vasiliadis
Great location and pub in the Rocks. It’s a little removed from the main busy streets so it’s a good option for a casual lunch without the traffic and noise. The pub is the oldest in Sydney and the historical features are on full display. It’s a beautiful sandstone building. Food is really good, excellent fish and chips - crispy and not greasy. The beetroot salad was really good as well. Outdoor and indoor seating Staff is friendly. There is live music some nights a week. Metered street parking available. It’s a little gem 😃

favourite pub of my recently deceased grandfather. I can see why, extremely lovely service and food, although small serves and high prices. was lovely. bar downstairs had excellent ambiance and would love to drink there just as he did. highly recommend if you're ever in the rocks to pop in for a drink.

Lovely old pub. Friendly staff and a great range of beers. Food is ok priced but fairly ordinary 'pub' food. You could make a good night here with a few mates and some exaggerated stories.

Found myself craving a beef wellington and was happy to find it here. Could have done with some more veggies but the meat was great. The fish and chips is a joke tho, more like fries with fish fingers! Thought this was a kids meal portion with an adult meal price. Friendly staff but the food portions could do with some touch up.

Historic old English Pub, good food and good beer! We enjoyed lunch a delicious crispy skin pan-fried barramundi and chips with drinks. This pub is one of many pubs in area of Sydney Harbour, Circular Quay and The Rocks. Book a tour from your hotel so the guide can show you how to get to all the old English themed Pubs, there are an Irish and Australian pubs too. We spent New Years Eve in The Rocks and did the pub tour by ourselves because we like to discover new places. But we are from Australia so we know our way around Sydney. The best way to get to the Hero of Waterloo Pub is to go the The Rocks and and follow the road around to the Lord Nelson and Glenmore Pubs and ask a the staff for directions or use your GPS. It's a fantastic walk filled with old England character. A visit to Australia must include a stay in The Rocks - there is lots of 3-5 star accommodation available. If you really want a treat - climb the Bridge and visit the rocks and these pubs on New Years Eve - it's an unforgettable fantastic experience!

Pint was a 6/10,heard it was alot better. Beautiful historical building in the heart of Sydney. Staff were alot friendlier to the clientele that were not in work clothes, like myself and some other patrons. I have noticed this more than once.

We attended the Hero of Waterloo on Saturday 21st May 2022, when we arrived there was a small band playing rock/blues/jazz and the atmosphere was great. We sat down had a few drinks and then ordered a meal. Now here is my recommendation.... If you are EVER at the Hero of Waterloo you need to order a meal. All 5 of us ordered a different meal and we all made comment on how awesome it was.... Now this is a pub, not a fancy restaurant but the meal was well above a good restaurant quality. So well done to the management for emptying such a quality chef! The pub itself is small and pokey which is exactly the style of a pub which holds as much history as it does. When we are next in Sydney or the Rocks area itself we will be calling back in to the Hero of Waterloo!

Best pub I have ever experienced and I have been to alot! Nestled in the most beautiful part of the world on the corner you'll find this magnificent historical Georgian Australian architectural pub in there the friendliest staff with clean and magnificent food and service, rating this pub as simply the best pub in our country! I highly recommend this amazing and fantastic place to all my friends and family alike!

The Hero of Waterloo is a great way to spend some time in and the music is brilliant with Valda probably Australia's oldest performer at 90 years of age in Australia's oldest pub . She has been singing & playing there for 39 years . The food is the best and can be eaten in the cosy restaurant or in the bar area

I love this place!! What a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon – friendly staff and a perfect pint of Guinness. It's great with friends, or to just sit at the bar, listen to some tunes and watch the world go by.

A quick early dinner after a wedding. The bar guys were awesome. We ordered food at the bar. They said take a seat in the bar or outside. After we did 2 unsuccessful laps looking for a place to sit, they noticed and told us they would open the restaurant rooms upstairs but we had to be done by 6 because that's then it opens. Absolutely awesome customer service. The food was just as good. I actually took the time to thank the bar staff in person afterwards.

My grandfather's watering hole back in the 1920s and 30s. How could I not love it and highly recommend it?! It has a great Irish and colonial feel. The staff are great and friendly too. The food is fab.

Went to this pub 34 years ago when I was in the army, deployed to guard Vic barracks for tow weeks, me and a few other soldiers had a great night and I said I would always go back there if I went to Sydney ( live in adelaide ) it bought back some great memories and had a real pub feel, ya just want to go there and drink a few beers and have a good a old chin wag with ya mates! It hasn't change a bit!

Good food, barramundi and fillet steak, with a decent choice of real ale. Lacking the refinements of a restaurant but we were ok with that as the bill reflected the value for money.

Nice old pub.....decent range op tap and decent looking menu too

Having lived in the Sydney CBD for a number of years this is our number 1 go to place! Historic building, awesome staff, fantastic music and great beverages. What more could you want in one of the most beautiful cities in the world?

Used to go there years ago on a Sunday afternoon and listen to great music, eat lovely food and generally have a good time

What a great night we had here last night! Bar staff were great, the tapas dishes were delicious, and the music just made the night complete!

We loved this place! And especially the band that was playing. 💕 Went for one drink....stayed for a few. Wished we could have had a tour downstairs. Such a beautiful and interesting building!

Great building, good range of ales but the burger was a rather bland frozen effort so lowered the score

I had the lamb risotto which was pleasant but nothing to write home about. There weren't many lamb pieces in it and none of the flavours were particularly pronounced. My friends ordered steaks. The first picture is of a steak ordered rare (which came medium rare), and a steak ordered medium (which came well done).

Came here on ANZAC day. Booked table for dinner. Very satisfied with excellent and personal service. Great food and wine at good prices. Thank you.

Atmosphere-wise, this is my favourite of the old Sydney pubs, with cute awkward angles within the sandstone walls and an unpretentious feel. Unfortunately, the beer and food prices are going through the roof, and they don’t even brew their own to offer something special.

This pub is small but full of characters. I love the lime stone interiors and decoration, it feels like we are in an idyllic English village. We first visited it on ANZAC public holiday a couple of years ago and returned most recently to have lunch. The two dishes we ordered from tapas menu are delightful surprises. The Italian meatballs are on point and the flatbread is absolutely divine after dipping into the sauce. The potato bravas come with 5 or 6 whole potatoes in a rich spicy sauce. I was dubious as the potatos were not diced, but sure thing it is well cooked and tender all the way through. The aioli is thick and cream, a good contrast to the tomato chilli sauce. They also have a good range of craft and standard beers on tap. The wine list is not extensive but covers the basics. I am just glad to be able to find this drinking hole in the middle of tourist attraction without getting overpriced mediocre tourist food.

A nice pub vibe with a good looking pub menu.

Unfortunately the service was poor and the staff had a snooty attitude. This would have been passable if the food would be good. Alas the steak was very poorly prepared and a real let down.

A place that won't see me again.

In the Hero of Waterloo bar for a casual beer with a friend just before Christmas. When I went to pay $17 for two beers with my debit card the barman said there would be a $2 surcharge ( yes, two dollar) for use of cards. I told him it was debit, with no fees to him or HoW. He said it didn't matter all cards are charged $2. Naturally I paid with cash and left after one beer. This outrageous impost on card payments is out of control in Sydney. Take your business elsewhere until merchants get sense.

Hands down the worst meal I've even eaten. The meal took an extremely long time to come out and when it did it was cold and for $17 for a chicken burger I expect a lot more than a tiny piece of chicken with half a piece of tomato on a roll with brown avocado. Would never eat here again.

An okay meal for a Friday lunch. Unfortunately Lord Nelson hotel was booked out, so The Hero of Waterloo had to try and meet my high expectations - some could say they were doomed from the start.

A fabulous interior and welcoming staff. I ordered the fish and chips which was average, the chips were definitely under par, chips are a major make or break for me. No wow factor and probably won't be back, but I've heard this place has a great vibe on a Friday or Saturday night.
Simply Starving
Great place for a beer if you're in The Rocks. I wouldn't bother with the food again but it's a traditional old little pub with a lot of character!

Great food & service, we also had the cellar museum tour.
Definitely try the tapas menu and ask for a table upstairs (less crowded, more of a proper restaurant dinning feeling)

As good as their historic building is, their food is just the opposite! This place may be good for drinks, but do not make the mistake of ordering food here. Extremely bland & unimpressive pub food, especially given the number of good choices in the neighbourhood.

Oh, and if you decide to pay by credit card, you get slugged $5 to use Amex & $2 for other cards. Must be the only place that charges a flat fee, instead of a percentage of transaction value. Very poor indeed & I for one will not be going here again!
ChairTable
$2 card charge no matter what you purchase. $5 for Amex/Diners. It put a bad taste in my mouth, The Lord Nelson is much better.

It's not the cheapest, due to location: The Rocks, but it's good tasty, hearty fare. The lamb always melts off the bone, the gravy is thick, salty and goes perfectly with green beans and mash. Apart from a random, appetising, sad looking bit of tomato of the Boy's, his meal is exactly the sort of pub food that we were craving.

Good Pub Food. Sitting outside this beautiful old sandstone pub on a sunny day, downing a cold beer and their pub lunch is pretty damn good. The food is pretty tasty and is reasonably priced. My only gripes: REALLY slow service - we waited half an hour for a plate of nachos and a lamb sambo. And the ridiculous price of a beer: I paid $6 for a half pint of Guinness. Now that hurt!

Love it. Newly renovated hero looks great.. just love the sandstone building & the hero burger.

Great venue but the advertised menu on their website does not exist! Not happy. Slow service too but friendly staff

Call me impatient but I don't want to stand around for 20 minutes waiting for bar staff to chat while holding my money in their hand that I withdrew using their eftpos. I subsequently missed my bus and connecting train. 20 minutes was no exaggeration!

Good spot. A nice old pub in The Rocks, food was good the upper dining room has a nice feel to it with a good view of the surronds.
