Review Restaurant Sasaki - Sydney

Karen Huynh
Delicious food! We had the omakase banquet and the flavours from each dish worked together well. The dishes did come out really quickly so felt it could have been paced better but that's the only negative. Great dining experience!

A late review, but one that had to be made. I had dinner on a Saturday, so advance booking was required. My group of 4 was required to choose the set menu. If you enjoy Japanese, then chances are that you'll be pleased by Sasaki. I think my favourite was the Egg custard. Least favourite would be corn & beetroot. This one had bits of corn shaped into a sphere and was attached to a skewer. It was awkward to eat and too hard to bite into. Everything else, I’d go back for because each dish was just bursting with flavours in the best kind of way. The space had indoor and outdoor options, however, both are on the tiny side. Aesthetically, it speaks Japanese and maintains its authenticity. Maybe I was in a good mood on this evening, but it gets a solid 4.5-5 stars for me.

We chose to go to sasaki after many recommendations from our friends and it was absolutely amazing. The menu changes often and not really your run in the middle authentic Japanese restaurant. But nonetheless, the food is amazing with a play on flavours, ingredients, textures and temperatures. The way was a little bit chewy, but the seafood dishes are a must have. Fresh, quality ingredients, simple and most importantly, clean and elegant flavours.

Went here for the Omakase (chef’s choice) tasting menu and was not disappointed. The dishes are deceptively small at first but you do get a full meal by the end, especially given some of the heavier dishes are towards the end. Really liked the progression from light dishes at the beginning to heavier dishes at the end. Chawanmushi was so silky and delicate. Curried beef cheek was rich and satisfying. Also really enjoyed the chocolate mousse cake to finish. Service was nice, attentive and polite. Also giving marks for the ambiance of the restaurant. Nice minimal decorations and beautiful dish ware.

We had a wonderful evening with omakase. The meals were prepared exquisitely and had amazing flavours. Pairing sake was very reasonably priced and complimented the food well.

So easy to recommend, this is one of my new favourite restaurants. Very well hidden, we almost couldn't find the place. It's minimally and tastefully decorated (as you'd expect), and it's fairly small. I'd describe dining here as intimate. The food was amazing - we had the degustation. Everything was fresh, all of the dishes were delicate, and made with a lot of thought and care. Delicious down to the last mouthful, and just the right amount. Service was fantastic too - waiters were all super friendly and knew the food well. We'll definitely be coming back here. 👌

Omakase experience was beautiful, and the staff were lovely. The food was fantastic for seafood lovers, for my partner who can do seafood but wouldn’t go out of his way for them he was a little disappointed with the fishy-ness. For me every dish was great, but the tuna and prosciutto was out of this world.

Had a lovely date night here last night for Valentine's Day. I was blown away by the minimalistic look, but flavour food that came out of this tiny kitchen. We had the Omakase and from light to heavy each dish really delivered an amazing taste. We really loved the crab and egg dish, so sweet and light. As an added bonus for booking on Valentine's Day we were given complementary chocolate 😊. Definitely will go back again.

10/10, great food. Every dish was well seasoned and flavoursome.

Only issue is that pacing is a bit rushed.

This is a very humble and beautiful Japanese restaurant tucked away off of the main streets near museum station. Absolutely loved the cosy and homey atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. The set menu offered a wide variety of different kinds of dishes. Some very quite flavourful while some were a bit bland in my opinion - nothing really stood out. Overall, a good dining experience and a nice place to go to for a girls night/date night.

We came here for Omakase style dining but that’s not exactly what we got... we received more of a set degustation menu and also the portion sizes were ridiculously small so not sure it was worth the money. Most of the dishes were tasty but none stood out and were super amazing or delicious.

Not really in the CBD, tucked behind Hyde Park on the Surry Hills side, it actually took us a while to find Sasaki, hidden away in an unassuming location off an alleyway. Wow, it is a find though. An elegant omakase for $80 (there was a $60 option too), and a matching tasting of sake ($50 each), oh an a supplement for having the wagyu beef instead of the duck (for one of us, $20). We found it well worth it.
Jamjam
The food was disappointing. We had the tasting menu. Would not recommend and did not think it was worth $80. Great customer service and ambience though.

Hidden away in an alley in the CBD lies this cosy Japanese fine dining degustation restaurant. Nice food but some were very questionable like the corn fritters which was so out of place and wasn’t very good. Should be removed from the menu. The dishes were made to share so there weren’t many individual dishes.

Service was good. Very nice people. And the food overall was pretty good. Had to pay extra for wagyu though otherwise was left with angus. The wagyu tasted better cause the angus was so dry and chewy. But the extra payment was annoying.

My friend and I were extremely disappointed by our experience here. The portion sizes were ridiculously tiny and we felt like we had barely eaten anything even after everything was served. The waitresses were incredibly rude, explained the dishes very unclearly and way too quickly. We could barely understand what they were saying. They also rushed us at the end. Despite the terrible service, they had the audacity to ask us for a tip even though we had spent over $200 already on a meal which was essentially a series of tiny appetisers. The food was way too overpriced for what it was. This was supposed to be my birthday dinner and they didn’t give us a slice of cake - there was just a plate with a candle and chocolate icing. Overall, an awful experience and I don’t understand the hype. Would not recommend to anyone and never ever going back here ever again. Like ever.

Really cool venue and atmosphere, but I felt that Omakase menu when we went was very poor. Out of the 10 or so dishes there wasn't a single one that was stand out or even tasted above average, and there were numerous ones that didn't taste good at all.
I love Japanese food and this place has been on my list for a while so I was very disappointed.
Olivia
I like the food at there. I order short course and i was satisfied. Its worth to try. It just a bit hard to find the restaurant.
Jasmine
Comfort and simple homecooking food style! The venue is really small and they also have outside sittings. The highlight for me would be the fish course for main dish, was dedicate and the compliment rice was seasoned very nice.

We love Japanese food and we decided to book into Sasaki for a birthday dinner, Sasaki has been on our list for a while and it was great to finally visit. Quite inconspicuous from the street, with a simple curtain entry that you may miss if you’re not looking hard enough. But make sure you do, because this place is amazing!

We order the full set menu. The Tuna was to die for, with delicious egg York source. The Chicken is very nice as well. And the service was great and patience. However, the main cource and the soup is just very normal. Overall, This is a good set menu and I Have had enough!
Orlandosuesue
It’s strange that this restaurant only got one set menu, and more strangely, you have to finish a dish before having the next one. But the environment is so fascinating and every dish is bravo, damn tasty! I love it, i will visit again when it change the menu!

Love the layout of the restaurant, reminded me of the intimate hole-in-the walls restaurants in Japan.

When we arrived there were other people outside waiting as they had not finished setting up.
Then one by one our names were called out for our bookings. I had requested to sit at the counter.

The menu is only omakase so that makes food preparation a lot easier and faster.

Loved the egg&crab custard, was so smooth and tasty.

The corn was so aromatic, thoroughly enjoyed that. Highly recommend the Wagyu!

I pretty much liked it all.

Cause I'm small, this type of menu suits me, for my partner his only criticism is that portions are a little small.

The service is great and overall they did a wonderful job accommodating my requests especially since this was for a birthday.

This is a small but really great place for seasonal and delicious Japanese food. The omakase menu had a great variety of seafood and meat. All the dishes were very nice but my absolute favourites were the egg custard, corn tempura, salmon and rice and the wagyu beef. Definitely make a booking in advance!

A very homely feel when sitting in the restaurant and throughout the course of your dinner, that feeling is only reinforced further through the simple home cooking and everyday wares. Oysters & Yuzu were simple, fresh and a great start to the meal. This was followed by Prawns, Apple & Coriander - my partner and I's favourite, Egg & Crab, Asparagus, Salmon, Duck and Beef. The braised beef cheeks melted in our mouths and the potato mash is indescribable.

Meals were a work of art. Delicate flavours in some dishes and punchy in others.
Service was great. Have already recommended Sasaki to others.

Actually rating: 3.5

Sasaki was an unexpected delight. The restaurant is Scandi minimalist with blonde wood, sleek lines and delicate diningware.

We opted for ala carte to share instead of the set menu: chawanmushi - silky smooth egg custard topped with crab meat and lemon oil; tender octopus braised with daikon - so much umami; rice with chicken mince and mushrooms - mandatory carbs; corn fritters with beetroot puree - served lollipop style on a stick, fun eat but not really a repeat order for me.

The two mains were superb: kurobuta pork with ontama egg and spinach; lamb with hoji tea and saikyo miso. The meats were perfectly cooked, and the flavours of each dish complemented them well.

For dessert, we shared the mini wafer with soy glazed nuts and caramel and the grapefruit sorbet with yuzu jelly. My favourite was the first one - the wafer shell itself was not impressive but the combination of the dark luscious caramel and the salty caramelized nuts was fantastic.

Service was mostly friendly, sometimes stern with one of the waitresses but in a polite way. We enjoyed dinner here, and while it's not an everyday spot due to the higher prices, I'd certainly recommend it for a night out.

Nice atmosphere, small capacity good for private events. Great set menu, but just not that amazed as I thought I would be. The service is good tho!

This quintessential Japanese restaurant celebrates the beauty of every day things such as ceramics, candles, rugs and transports you to Japan for the night. The dishes are small, delicate and unusual. That asparagus, that cuttlefish. I could go on and on. I can’t wait to go back to this rather special restaurant. #japan #japanesefood

Such a cute space located in the city off a cute little alley way! There some outdoor and indoor seating, we choose to be seated outside as it was a nice warm day! Every little detail at the restaurant just made the experience just that much better from the chopsticks, plates and atmosphere. The staff were friendly and helpful. We loved the slow cooked kumbuta pork and the braised octopus

My friend and I visit here last night. We felt uncomfortable during the night because the service was bad and rude. Both of the food and the environment was good. But one of the staff ruined everthing. We have been treated differently comparing with the other tables beside us. She served with no smile and a sour face at all like we own her money. I said thank u to her everytime when she was serving, however,no reply at all either. She even speaked to us in an imperative tone of voice. We probably not come back here again.

I came here for dinner last week, the venue interior and atmosphere was quite intimate... great for a date night.

I was here with 3 other people so we had to order the set menu, I can appreciate all the dishes as they took a lot of care to each ingredient and the quality was really high. However, the flavours were not to my palette, I can understand what they were trying to achieve and they did it well but wasn’t for my liking. It was quite subtle for me but the salmon and Wagyu dish was cooked exceptionally though the flavours were average. I think I am more use to stronger Japanese flavours compared to something more “traditional” or even “flat”.

The highlight of the night was the dessert! Every single dessert on the menu was amazing and I honestly couldn’t fault it, I would definitely come back just for the dessert.

The service was okay during the night, wasn’t the best but I couldn’t complain as we didn’t really have any issues. Serving sizes were good and price was decent at $80pp for the set menu.

Last time I went to Sydney on an eating holiday, I left with one regret, not having gone to Sasaki. Having been a long time fan of Cre Asion (arguably the best cafe in Australia), I really should have gotten some sort of notification when the owner Yu Sasaki decided to open up a restaurant next to the cafe, along Alberta lane.
Jo Shen Wong
Sasaki isn’t just about the food it’s the whole ambiance, from the cutlery to the deco that screams Japan. I found the omakase menu really simple and well done, but it was missing the little wow factor and the kick in taste. A modern twist of traditional Japanese ingredients. Highly recommend the deserts. A must in Sydney.

Instagramable: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Food:⭐️⭐️⭐️
Sydney
Really average. Asparagus tempura are soggy. Which is a big drop on the standard. The wagyu is no where near the best ones we had in the pass. Nothing special for the dessert. nothing memorable. Disappointed

Best Japanese restaurant I have been to Sydney. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and everything about our experience was amazing. Staff are friendly and very helpful. We did the set menu and got. Bottle of sake.

Sasaki is a small intimate restaurant that serves authentic Japanese food. It is located at a rather discrete location though, I got lost looking for the restaurant lol. Pictured are gurnard sashimi, clams sake, egg & crab, beef in red wine sauce, veggies dish: tofu, cabbage, persimmon & walnut (perfect dish to make me eat my veggies!) and cauliflower, potato, brussel sprout & pumpkin. Not only were the dishes a delight for the eyes, they were also a delight for the palate

Seasonally set menu , 8/10 from my view , very hard to find that place but very quiet . Food are fresh and yummy, light and easy .sake are good as well , must try dessert .

Wow. One of the better Japanese restaurants I have ever been to. For two people, you can order 4 dishes + dessert as you will be full. We ordered kingfish, ocean trout, wagyu, beef cheek, asparagus, plum sake custard and wafer/almond dessert.
- kingfish: one of my favourite dishes ever. The fish is so so fresh and delicious, and the sauce is unique and paired perfectly. You mix in the ginger and shallots etc into the sauce.
- ocean trout: rich and melt in the mouth. Again, incredible flavours and textures it was cooked perfectly
- asparagus: tempura style. Nice to break up the dishes
- beef cheek: pull apart, so soft, with a rich gravy/sauce. This was my friends favourite dish
- wagyu: we did not like :( I thought it would be melt in the mouth but it was kind of chewy and cut in big chunks...reminded me of a tongue. Maybe I just do not like wagyu beef.
- dessert: AMAZING. The custard was bittersweet and I could have eaten a tub of it. The desserts are bite size so you can totally order more than one ;)
Our plan for when we return is to get 3 mains to share and 2 desserts each!
Also, the yuzu sake is fresh and delicious. Yum!

Great services, enjoyed the food. We thought the eight course weren’t going to be enough because of serving size. But we were more than happy at the end of the meal.

Such a hidden gem... we walked pass couple of times following google map and finally found it. It’s a really cozy contemporary japanese restaurant. Their menu is really creative~ but of course fushion... we had the omakase since we didn’t know what to expected. It was 80 pp. so not to bad for 8~9 dishes. Loved the duck, ocean trout, ume custard and the egg. The rest were alright, not surprising~ will be back...

From the moment you step into Sasaki, it feels like you’ve entered another world! Clean colour schemes mixed in with quaint furniture settings makes it a comfortable place to enjoy your meal.

All dishes were fresh and beautifully curated. The bonito tataki was the star dish of the night, instantly melting in your mouth. Oysters had a nice dressing that you probably wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. Desserts were beautifully plated and packed so much flavour in such a tiny, delicate little wafer.

Set menu was definitely worth it for the quality and service. Looking forward to coming back.
Andrea
Really nice dining experience, food is special but still feels homely. This place reminds me of Japan so much! Every course was beautifully done.
Prawnyha
Interesting omakase in a small place. Service was ok. We sat at the bar... some good dishes... some were nothing to rave on about. Value was also also... All things considering at around $100 a head
Xoxo.msjamie
We ordered a la carte from the menu and tried a total of 8 dishes. I found there was great attention to detail on every dish and thought everything was presented well. We enjoyed all the dishes, especially the prawns, chawanmushi & the 2 bigger courses of beef cheeks which melted in our mouths and pork cutlet. We tried sake in 2 flavours: peach and yuzu and I loved the peach one! Also save room for dessert, although it shouldn’t be too hard since the serving size here are a bit on the small side.

Amazing experience that surpassed my expectations. The flavours were so refined and each dish was very well balanced. I would say this is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Sydney so far (it ranked much above Sokyo for me in terms of food quality and cost worthiness).

We had the kingfish, wagyu, egg and prawn, scallops and today's rice. My winning dishes were the Kingfish (excellent entree, the acidity of the capsicum and vinegar soup really opens up your palette), and the wagyu (the sauce brought out its flavours, sometimes I find wagyu way too rich, chewy, and I get sick of it easily but this one wasn't anything like that).
Stephanie Bean
The food was amazing! So delicious. Very authentic Japanese style and techniques. The atmosphere was relaxed, minimalist and comfortable whilst still feeling very special.
As a birthday dinner it was one to remember. The meal was set out Omakase style set menu.
Even the bathroom was lovely with a diffuser making it smell fresh.
I would come back everyday if I could.

Sasaki had a nice and simple minimalistic interior, with quite a small place making it more intimate and exclusive. The staff were really friendly, and the food came out really quickly compared to other restaurants that offer set menus, perhaps a bit too quick making me feel like we are rushed because they gave us a time limit of 2 hours for the table (we finished 10 course in an hour).

All the dishes were really tasty and delicious. Everything on the plate compliments each other. My favorite would be the desserts, where I chose the monaka and mochi. The monaka had a really nice filling and also a bit of crunch to it.

My least favorite dish was the duck, its was quite hard to chew and the texture of the duck was not that good. The duck sausage was better.

Overall, the other dishes was delicious, but portion was quite too small.
Leon
Sasaki is a Japanese restaurant which pays homage to the owner’s hometown of Shimane and emulates his fragmented memories of food in Japan. The restaurant is also part of the wider omakase trend in Asia Pacific, where miniature restaurants offering intimate Japanese (and now Asian) fare, set the new benchmark of fine-dining. Of course, Sydney is still catching up on this trend.

I have high hopes for Sasaki, because its success will herald a new phase of fine dining in Sydney. If you have visited cities like Singapore and Hong Kong and tried their god-like innovative omakases in minimalist and intimate interiors, you will definitely want to go back.

I had my ten-course meal at sasaki, one of the restaurants which narrowly missed on a hat. For a chef who is not trained in Japanese cuisine, it is amazing he can come up with 10 dishes for below $80. However, there is not many surprises as most of the dishes fall flat and are as ordinary as the ingredients suggest.

Good - the only dish which tantalises my tastebuds is the cured kingfish in red pepper and amazing vinegar. The combination of vinegar and red pepper increases my appetite but the kingfish is not as fresh as I expect.

Not Good - Countless dishes fall flat including the roast duck breast in cabbage sauce. The unmarinated half-cooked duck was tough, chewy and bloody. The unpleasant flavour of the duck breast lingers in my palate as the chewing continues.

The rice of the day - a seaweed rice - is very disappointing. Although it is commendable that a high grade of rice grain is used, the rice is prepared with a higher proportion of water content. And the mixture of seaweed and oil did nothing to bring out the rice fragrance.

The puffs - hard and dry - what else can I say?

Dear Good Food, you seriously need to visit more cities abroad. On the last count, there are hundreds of omakases in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong which are on a different level but they are still not good enough for any Bib Gourmands or Michelin stars. It shudders me that places like Sake, Sokyo, Sushi E and Sasaki are hatted/nearly-hatted.

Came here for my friends' birthday celebration. I thought the staff were really nice and had a minimal simple setting which was nice. The courses came out at a reasonable pace, and the highlight was the rice of the day. I think the matcha salt and asparagus was interesting. The oyster was fantastic too. Overall, I had an enjoyable experience.

Absolutely amazing food and excellent customer service! The long awaited booking is worth it! Highly recommend the pork and beef 😍😍I'll be back soon
what i ate in order of absolutely loved to yum because there wasn't anything i didn't like:
1. oyster + yuzu
2. "today's rice" (takikomi gohan)
3. asparagus + matcha salt + lime
4. eggplant + buckwheat + plum + nori
5. snapper + chili + shiso

dessert obv in its own category + would highly highly recommend the meringue + matcha + yuzu~

definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu (looking at you PORK)

oh yeah there's a muji humidifier in the bathroom~ cmon too perf

The food at at Sasaki are more on the lighter side of flavors and none really caught my palette's attention, but maybe this is because I do prefer stronger flavors and aroma's,
However, my favorite dishes of the night was the fremantle sweet prawn ceviche, yam bean duck sausage and the 2 desserts from their Omakase menu.
Also, their staff were super friendly and also super helpful with recommendations for both food and drinks.

Read the full experience in detail on my blog:

Underwhelming. A missed opportunity. These were the thoughts that went through my head as I left this quaint restaurant tucked away in a quiet alleyway on the fringe of the CBD.

Sasaki's marketing boasts 'simple Japanese cooking' and the ink-stamped verbiage on their 'hay-infused washi' placemats waxes lyrical about the importance of appreciating simplicity in design. Considering the restaurant's fervent justification of its barebones approach, I should have been prepared for what would ultimately turn out to be an ordinary experience.

The atmosphere is utilitarian and uncomfortable. The dining area features stools without backs (not great for a 2.5 hour omakase), exposed concrete slab and light coloured hardwood benches that are more evocative of IKEA furniture than Japanese simplicity. I spotted just one table for two near the kitchen entrance. All other couples are required to sit at the bar (more on that later).

Sadly, the $80 omakase turned out to be as plain as the decor. On paper, the menu seemed like a nice balance of seafood, vegetable and meat dishes - a single Sydney rock oyster with vinaigrette each, prawn ceviche, salmon and fennel tartare, asparagus tempura with a messy beetroot sauce, an almost flavourless crab chawanmushi, mildly-overcooked duck in a shiitake broth (if I recall correctly), beef bourguinon with buttery mashed potato, and a bowl of rice cooked with chicken and shiitake. To finish, you each get to pick a dessert off their usual dessert menu. It sounds like a lot of food, but be warned - this is one of those restaurants that serves degustation dishes on a single share plate - a pet peeve of mine.

My favourite dish was the beef bourguinon and mashed potato, but I had to question its place on the omakase among the other more traditional Japanese dishes.

I'm no opponent of simplicity - in fact, I believe that simple is always best, especially when it comes to Japanese cuisine. Sasaki's primary failing was how plain all the dishes were. They were well constructed from simple, low-cost ingredients, but as the omakase dragged on, it never seemed to build up to anything. There was no grand finale - just one bland dish after another. Neither my tastebuds nor my stomach were satisfied by what was served that night.

I would have awarded Sasaki a rating of 3.5 had it not been for a few disappointing observations:

- Nothing happens at the bar. The waitstaff prepare drinks with their backs to you.
- Their mojito is made from mint leaves, ice and Cascade Lime and Soda pre-mix from a can.
- Tea is served with hot water from a kitchen tap that strangely serves as the centrepiece of the bar.

Sasaki has the makings of something great, but it missed the mark terribly on my visit. Whatever they were doing to get the hype-train rolling upon opening, they are no longer doing.

Great atmosphere and food. All of the dishes were great, but it was the beef cheek that stole the show. The braised beef cheek was unbelievably tender and the paired sauce made it even more amazing.

The waiters and waitress were very attentive and spent time explaining each dish. It was a great experience and I would definitely return.
Flora Secreat
The food is quite average. The best dish that I am really enjoy are prawn, pork and two little yummy dessert.
Staff are friendly. However, one thing that I don't like it is I actually booked table 2 weeks in advance to make sure that I get a table, but it end up with I have to sit on the counter. They actually do not have reserve sign on the table at all when I arrive at the restaurant. It's make me wonder why would I bother to reserve the table, if it gonna end up with sit on the counter.

Restaurant Sasaki is a not so hidden gem from chef Yu Sasaki, the man behind the ever popular cafe with the matcha goods, Cre Asion. The restaurant is intimate with a handful of seating; we booked weeks in advance for a weekend dinner. The food is homely and pays homage to Sasaki's Japanese hometown of Shimane.
Next Stop: Food
MACKEREL, SO GOOD. The oily fish was balanced with the perfect amount of vinegar in the rice. The fish is already flawlessly seasoned so there’s no need to dip it in soy sauce. This was definitely my favourite for the night and I hope it stays on their seasonal changing menu!
NCJO
Tucked in a hidden laneway, Sasaki is a charming restaurant offering dishes which invoke the memories of childhood. All the dishes were very clean and familiar to the palate.

Outstanding dishes:
1. Mushroom, fontina cheese and onsen egg. The richness of the egg yolk combined with the creamy fontina foam creates a delectable sauce which is soaked up by the crumbed mushrooms.
2. Mackerel sushi, the texture of the mackerel was divine, it seamlessly blended with the sushi rice.
3. Beef cheeks braised in red wine and miso. This dish was flavoursome and paired perfectly with mashed potatoes. The creamy mash was so finely milled and could have easily stood alone as a dish in its own right.

Underwhelming dishes:
1. The duck, eggplant, trevally.
2. All the desserts. We felt that they were nothing better than store-bought biscuits.

Misc.
1. The serving sizes are rather small, It was a light dinner which left us just satisfied.
2. There were a lot of hit and misses.

Sasaki offers an easy relaxed dining experience. Although we did enjoy our meal, we feel that there is no imminent rush to return.

Sasaki is a complicated place...

I'd say the best way to explain is...

Conjure up a three hat restaurant, now peel back the: suited waiters/waitress, very expensive ingredients and that dictionary level wine list oh and those funky spheres shenanigans then you get Sasaki - somewhere that gives common ingredients the love and care to make them great.

Again this is what makes it a hit and miss! Perception and personal taste. If your all about the Wagyu this or Sea Urchin that...not the place for you, but if wanna know what good Japanese food can be this is your place...

***Caveat on the authentic Japanese food it is and it isn't :)

I cant fault anything. The interior, atmosphere, service, drinks (both teas and sake), omakase menu was amazing. Highly recommend. Omakase was $80pp when I went.
I'm Still Hungry
When Yu Sasaki embarked on his culinary career over a decade ago, he knew that one day he would open his own restaurant. Twelve years in the making, the traditional Japanese curtains known as noren were finally put in place, marking the entrance to Restaurant Sasaki. Nestled in the concrete jungle between Alberta Street and Nithsdale Lane, it’s in a bit of a hidden spot; it’s about to get a lot less hidden.

I’ve been visiting different types of food places recently and I hope to share with you all soon. Apart from brunches/coffees, one of my favourite cuisines is Japanese food, from sashimi to udon to ramen, I just love everything about Jap style cooking. If you’re a true matcha loving Sydney sider, then you’d know about Cafe Cre Asion, best known for their huge ‘bowls’ of matcha latte. The restaurant I visited yesterday, Sasaki, is in fact another amazing ‘cre-asion’ by the same owner. It is a tiny restaurant tucked away in an alley way close to ‘Cafe Cre Asion’, newly opened, its whole exterior design definitely gives you the impression of being in Japan instead of Sydney.
Picky Piggies
You might not have heard of Sasaki, but you may have heard of Cafe Cre Asion. That's right, Mr Sasaki is the owner of both, and Cre Asion is one of the most visited cafes in Sydney. . Sasaki serves Japanese home cooking in the traditional Japanese way. You almost feel like you are in Japan. The setting gives a home-like feeling (at least a Japanese home) through a simple and plain decor - a concept of 'simplicity'.

Service was warm and great. We ordered 5 dishes: the duck, the mackerel, miso soup, salmon n rice and special of the day (seared bonito (?) like sashimi) which was enough for 2. The duck and the mackerel was fresh, well seasoned and overall, excellent 😍

Order the takimono for a bonus display of tableside theatre. A wooden box grater is brought over for shaving a large hunk of dried bonito. The smell of dried tuna is intoxicating. After staff have grated the bonito, a little drawer at the bottom is removed so its wispy contents can be transferred to your bowl of takimono.
