Review The Bunker - Sydney

Maximillion L
A cute little gem with genuinely friendly staff. They greet everyone who comes in and on their way out with big smiles. The coffee was great and my omelette with chorizo, roasted potatoes and parmesan was very tasty. It was perfectly cooked and the serving was big. The Reuben Sandwich was wonderful. I am not a big fan of corned beef but I really enjoyed it. But the Pork Belly Sandwich was somewhat disappointing though. The flavours of the pork not great and the roll tasted ordinary. For a sandwich you really need to impress your customers with your bread. I like the rustic decor and furnitures but they are not very comfortable.

Have been going to The Bunker Darlinghurst for past 5 years. Coffee is consistent and the staff always the best care of us. Reuben Corn Beef is one of my favorites. Great Spot lived up to the hype!!

This cafe has a great atmosphere and the staff were friendly and attentive. The coffee wasn’t the best I’ve had in Sydney but it did the job! The breakfast was delicious- especially the mushroom omelette.

Coming from Melbourne where there is an abundance of great coffee places I needed a nice little cafe to fulfill my coffee habits while my girlfriend spent a year living in Darlinghurst. Our first stop was Bunker and I wasn't disappointed. One of my favourite places to enjoy breakfast and coffee outside on a warm Sydney morning.

Lovely cafe, simple but delicious food and coffee, great cozy atmosphere, will go back!
Gregory Long
Cosy place with good coffee and friendly staff. Not suitable for large groups but perfect for a catchup with a couple of close friends.
Eric Ong
Great coffee. Good breakfast. Sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere. There are quite a lot of customers sitting around here during lunch.

Entered the cafe and was greeted with great customer service. I have to say, I loved the coffee and food here as well as the atmosphere it exudes! It's a great place to enjoy a quick break. Would definitely come back again anytime! Highly recommend!

Fabulous semi-basement (hence name) daytime cafe with emphasis on fresh, tasty and organic. Gorgeous late breakfast of fully flavoursome vegetarian omelette (served with sourdough) and simply poached eggs and mushroom with toast. Simple but delightful (not so sure about the coffee though - a little bitter and powdery).

Venue:
Tiny space at Liverpool street Darlinghurst,
I think when You blink and you’ll miss this place 😝

Service:
Girl who took my order was friendly.
Barista was not so chatty, even though not so busy and he looks so intimidating !

Food & Drink:
Just had a piccolo.
Happy hour start 1.30, and coffee cost $2.
Coffee beans powered by Campos, one of big name in industry.
Coffee is taste good! I had crumpets with blueberry comport which is little bit small portion compare to price but taste not but.
Chair in there is not comfortable to stay longer.
And worried about hygiene as well. (Bit dusty)

Great staff, good seating, nice sun, varied menu. Delicious food and coffee. The homemade crumpets are amazing. Will be back next time we are in Sydney
Carl
Really good food and coffee. Had the shakshouka and green eggs on crumpets which were both really tasty along with good coffee (long black and a hot flat white) which is unfortunately normally absent in Sydney but not here!

I must admit we left here a little disappointed after we saw some reviews on Zomato, and decided to walk 15-20 minutes on an empty tummy to this little cafe on Liverpool St.

From the outside it looks a little funky albeit with a couple of tacky things inside, and the staff seemed like a tight-knit family/friends operation. The sun was shining into the front of the cafe which was nice, but the seats were uncomfortable.

Coffee came first and it wasn't warm enough, not to mention the beans seemed to have a bit of an odd taste (perhaps not strong enough?). My partner ordered the Banana Bread which was tasty, but the butter was more like a rich caramel - too much for a breakky!

I ordered the slightly more substantial Poached Eggs in Sourdough with mushrooms. The bread was crisp, but it came with butter sachets (I don't like this personally), the mushrooms were doused in overpowering herbs and the egg was a touch overcooked.

They had some very nice looking muffins and cookies in the front counter window though, so maybe it was a case of just ordering the wrong thing at the wrong time. Coffee definitely needs improvement though. Good luck guys!

Dropped in for a coffee. Not a big place and surrounded by many of the known coffee places about. The coffee was fantastic and opted for a second! The lunch menu looks good so will be back.

I visited The Bunker over the Christmas Holidays with a few mates for a catch up and we all had such a good time. The food was splendid and it wasn't too expensive. The coffee was strong and gave us the caffeine we so desperately needed.

We'll definitely be back!

Had the Bunker Reuben, looks super tasty, but unfortunately somewhat dry. Could do with some mustard. Big serving though, lots of meat. Taking half of it home.
My friend had the crazy mushrooms, which looked incredible and tasted delicious. Definitely the better choice.
Coffee was great, service good and friendly.
Would come again but no more Reuben.

Ok let me start by saying this has to be one of the most underrated places in Darlinghurst !

Small and unassuming you wouldn't be blamed for thinking it was just another run of the mill coffee shop. But it's not, they bring love to the table, their love of food and coffee.

Campos coffee is always the best way to start a good breakfast morning and well the food I guess I'll let you discover it for yourself

I enjoyed my Cappuccino ($3.50) using Campos Coffee and the Babyccino ($1.50) for Miss 1 year old comes with a lid and straw for extra safety from spillage. Bacon and Egg Roll ($7.50) is premade and warmed up but still pretty good without being too dry and comes with a side of tomato relish. Friendly and efficient service that seem to have regulars happily coming back for their coffee fix. Local gem vibe and quirky decor with some tempting specials on the menu.

Just needed a green tea for the trip home on the train to get the detox effect working. It was nice they steeped my tea and removed my tea bag/leaves but I was in a little bit of a rush. Not my favourite blend - but a good cup of tea.

Love this place. It's my local and favorite cafe in Darlo. Friendly staff and great service. Coffee is always good and the Scrambled Eggs and bacon is as good as if not better than the more expensive Bills down the road.
Lunch Pie
This place is so incredibly cute and trendy. Dark and cosy with lovely wooden tables; whay got me the most were the tiny little stools. True bunker style! Small and cosy, the staff were super lovely and service was incredibly efficient. Coffee is okay. I guess when it's served in tiny cups, you don't get a chance to savour it as it goes cold so quickly. The food was delicious! I got my usual of scrambled eggs and bacon which I couldn't fault. My friends opted for the green eggs which were also gorgeous. Would definitely recommend
Gastronomique
Eaten here with friends a few times when I have been up in Sydney. Coffee is fantastic - great flavors, brewed just right, right temperature. Food is pretty basic - ingredients might be good, but menu is not very inspired, and there really isn't enough condiments or accompaniments. For example, the Reuben has plenty of corned beef, the bread is lovely, but it really needs more cheese and horseradish. Granola is just cereal with a dab of toppings. Add points if you are coming in for coffee and toast. Wait staff were competent, if a bit slow and unfriendly. Food arrived in a decent amount of time.

Decor is definitely "hole in the wall" - suitable for one or two people.

Take points off if you are sitting down for a meal. Add them if you are just having coffee and toast.
Ryan
Great customer service, good but quirky vibes, food was yum and everyone else's in the cafe looked good too!
Emilee Trinder
Beautiful house made crumpets with maple syrup & bacon. Very fast service great breakfast. Cute little cafe.
Jon
Excellent coffee, reserving judgment on the food. Cool interior and friendly service. Latte was the best I've had in Sydney. Reuben was let down by the big, thick, chewy chunk of corned beef (not even sliced with the grain) but I'd give the rest of the menu a chance.
Excuse Me Waiter
There are so many choices for breakfast in Darlinghurst, but it looks like the locals flock to The Bunker for some quality bites and coffees to start off their day. We probably wouldn't have even noticed The Bunker, except for the huge Campos coffee umbrellas which are outside the inconspicuous cafe entrance and the masses of people milling about.
Melbourne Lifestyle Blog
The coffee was strong but slightly metallic. Tea is served in a cute tea pot and English style cup. I ordered the mushroom, tomato and cheese melt. It was fine but nothing interesting compared to what I could whip up at home. It could definitely be spiced up with some herbs or chilli. The boiled eggs (whilst simple) were nicely presented.

I really enjoyed our light lunch at The Bunker. This is the kind of cafe I would love to go to regularly if it was close to where I lived. The food options were simple but there was plenty to choose from and I thought the sandwiches were tasty, fresh and light.
Heneedsfood
The Reuben sandwich comes in lightly toasted rye with a generous stack of fairly thin, and quite tasty corned beef. It may not mention it on the menu, but rocket leaves do find their way into the sandwich, distracting the flavours of other key components. Not a great deal of horseradish in there, either.
Terry
Not bad still. Just moved back into the area, and i have to say the bunker is thankfully still going strong.

Great find!. Had to go to St Vincent's hospital and had a bit of time to look for a good coffee. Found the Bunker and have been back 4 or 5 times for good food and coffee. I have had sandwiches, the egg and bacon roll with relish, the home made baked beans with chorizo and good old poached eggs. Nothing but praise for this little hole in the wall where quality reigns and unpretentious staff are a pleasure to deal with.

Excellent brunch at inner syd.
Good value for money

Best tea and coffee. Their chicken sandwich is amazing! Very reasonably priced. Laid back ambience. Their communal table reminds me of Melbournion hipster cafe! Friendly staff. Experience of true local culture. Love going back there every once in a while.
Hungryelectra
So very serious. The coffee here is good and the food too, if on the pricey side. But hey I get that places need to make money. Therefore it is upon this supposition that I ask 'why so serious and borderline unfriendly?'

I know it's Darlinghurst and all, and that hipsters are not into humour unless it's ironic (which doesn't demand the crack of smile, jut the smug awareness of ones superiority over the drones who are uncool, unyoung and unhot. )

But come on. Your lives are good. You are young and cool and rock great facial hair, so why not lighten up a bit? If someone says hello or thank you or smiles at you try being.... You know..... Human. You might enjoy it.

Only OK for quick bite. Not much special here - hole in the wall is the right term. They've tried to do what they can with the place but there's more seating outside than in. Inside the communal tables are the type where you're not really sure whether you want to touch the table they look old and dirty. Had the beans and egg - served on a tiny plate to suit the tiny place but made eating uncomfortable. Lots of premade stuff for takeaway. Seemed popular with locals but can't say anything drawing me back here.

Superb tender and juicy slow cooked pork belly on miche roll with a sticky balsamic dressing - wish there was more of it! The corned wagyu Swiss cheese & sauerkraut bunker Sanger was also extremely fresh with fresh ingredients - not as great as the pork belly roll. He bunker homemade crumpet with ricotta & berry compote was nice & chewy and not dense at all. Overall a fantastic experience & exceptional coffee - will be back!!

Robbery. Decided to go for lunch with a few friends; what a mistake. Got the sloppy joe, described as a 'massive sandwich' by the waiter. When it arrived it seemed like half the fillings had been left out! Yes, the meat itself was tasty, but the bbq sauce was nowhere to be seen, and only one half had cheddar. It seemed like the aforementioned ingredients (which were advertised) were compensated by a large amount of rocket, something not mentioned on the menu. Yes, what I ate tasted good, but it was not really what I ordered. For $16 I expected a bit more, especially when I'd asked before. That a light lunch turned out at $57 for three of us, myself enjoying an iced chocolate (which was mostly ice, sadly), and another buying a San Pellegrino, seemed ludicrous. The coffee and the breakfast I cannot speak for, but please stay away at lunchtime!

Worst experience ever!!!! I ordered the spanish sardines expecting sardines cooked by the restaurant. What i got was sardines in a can. When i asked the waitress about this she was very nice and obliging and took it back to the kitchen. However moments later the owner came storming up to our table with the plate in his hand. He was the rudest person ive ever met in my life. He demanded i eat the sardines and simply said 'you ordered it you're paying for it'. He said he wouldnt remove it from the bill. I finally said to him 'as a restaurant you need to be accountable' finally he walked away with the plate. Moments later i noticed another diner ordering the spanish sardines and the waitress bringing the same plate to that customer. After this the manager walked to our table and said he would remove it from our bill. Notice only when another customer ordered it then they removed from our bill. Worst service ever and never going back there!!

Best coffee in town!. There's no coffee like bunker's. The cafe's vibe is always good, with great music and cool baristas.. you just can't get enough.

Delicious! Went to The Bun.... Delicious!
Went to The Bunker for breakfast after seeing pictures of the homemade crumpets - they did not disappoint! A nice change from pancakes, and not too sweet like some breakfasts can be.The chorizo hash was also a tasty and unique dish. Drinks (flat white and iced coffee) were good and served quickly. Only downside is that it is a small place and once it started getting busy, we did feel a bit cramped. But that didn't affect the quality of food!
Coffeeperson
Ordered scrambled eggs and coffee for two (take away), the coffee arrived very quickly and waited forever for the eggs. I asked the barista if he could re-make my coffees as they were practically cold by the time my eggs arrived - all i received was a quip from him about "being civilised". Hipsters might like the attitude, but I did not.

Idiots like this need a lesson or two about the meaning of the words "customer service".

Needless to say I will not be returning, nor will i recommend this place to any friend/associate.

The homemade crumpets were delicious. I normally don't order sweet for breakfast but these crumpets have changed my mind

Best steak sanga ever! No joke it is amazeballs

What's not to love about bunker? I find the staff cool and friendly and the coffee is great. I get one every day as I work close by. I have the occasional bfast and m never disappointed.

Extremely unprofessional, unfriendly female wait person seemed put off after I requested to go inside to check out what kind of food was on offer in the display cabinet instead of ordering straight from menu. Ordered a fresh chicken sandwich and coffee. Received a very good coffee and a tiny sandwich that had been toasted which I hadn't ask for and don't like. She didn't seem to even know who ordered it. At ten dollars for a sandwich I'd expected something above average ,better than I could make at home. What made my experience even worse that friends of hers having just a tea there were fawned over while I was ignored. Was offered no water nor asked if I wanted another coffee. This cafe is always busy mainly with coffee buyers. It constantly amazes that people accept such mediocre service. I don't recommend this cafe nor will I return when there are so many cafes in darlinghurst.

A lucky weekend find. I stumbled across The Bunker by accident traversing across from Paddington to Hyde Park, down Liverpool St, and it was one of the foodie highlights of my short break from queensland. I had iced lemon myrtle tea, which comes in a small carafe - enough for a couple of refredhing glasses, and bruschetta, which had a bean paste base and oven baked whole roma tomatoes across sourdough. The setting was fantastic too - maybe something taken for granted when you live in Sydney - but a rustic cave-like cafe with exposed beams, historic bricks and colonial-era stones was unique for me- this place has not been "tarted" up to look old. I loved the lowset coffee tables on the street and pulled up a wood box to sit on, unmatching china ware and bric a brac completes the genuine rustic feel of this cafe

Love This Place!. This is my regular haunt for weekend breakky and I gotta say that in the 2 years I have been coming here I have never once had a bad experience! Staff are just lovely, coffee is very good and the food and changing specials never disappoint. Keep up the good work bunk!

Bunker. The coffee was good but left a bitter taste in my mouth as the service was SO BAD! We had a female waitress who messed up our order and didn't apologise, just said she was new.

Perfect. Basically exactly what a cafe should be. Friendly staff, great coffee, fresh, delicious food, no attitude.

Positives:
Well-made Campos Coffee, great sandwiches, speedy service, very friendly staff

Negatives:
Bit small so can get extremely busy - testament to its quality but sometimes you just have to walk past and compromise.

Like, like, like. I had the corned wagyu sanga with pickles and sauerkraut. Eight tender slices stacked jaw breakingly high, oozing with mayo. Sour dough was soft and lightly toasted. Expensive at $16 but nonetheless delish.
Frances
Brilliant coffee! Best I've had in a while! And was lovely and cosy on a rainy day in Sydney!
BLT
Over rated & extremely over priced. While the Bunker has decent coffee and an interesting menu it is sorely let down by poor service and ridiculous prices. For a $40 breakfast I'd rather go somewhere like Bills thanks!
GregFresser
Hunker at the bunker. I was happy to have stumbled across this appropriately named cafe on Liverpool St. Scott says he specialises in coffee and he serves up a quality cuppa - assisted by a great choice of brand, namely Campos. I ordered an iced tea for my mate while we hunkered down for a business meeting - outside being 41C heat. Remember that day, Sydney!! Cool place, assisted by a well functioning fan! I'll certainly return. (See my pic of the iced tea and capp. )

Ew.... Also a victim of seriously raw eggs. Staff acted like it was me being picky!! So rude, not even an apology. The coffee was ok, bit strong for my liking. Definitely better places to go than here!!!!
Nadine Burns
What a diappointing experience. Coffee is great so we decided to try them for breakfast. Not a good move. I ordered baked eggs and when they arrived they were still raw. Sent them back and they came back UNCOOKED. Staff were ok but SLOW and when I left after asking for a refund I was farewelled with some sarcastic 'goodbye, have a great day'. Was I expected to be cheery when I left??? Wrote on their Facebook page and there was no response, they just deleted it. Interesting that most of their good reviews on Urbanspoon are from 2009 - maybe something's changed.... And not for the better.

Shium. I love Bunker because of their excellent coffee and food.Staff are very friendly and co-operative.They always try to satisfy their customers.Small kitchen but they try to make quality food.

Attitude, Bad, Bad Attitude!. What a crazy disappointment this small coffee place with mediocre food has. Ordered baked eggs, came to us raw, absolutely raw. Was told abruptly "depends on how someone likes their eggs". Huh? Returned to the kitchen, returned to us so hard baked ugly and inedible. Attitude said not to bother to offer an excuse, replacement or refund. A drive, a pretentious dive. Avoid.
Moose General Store
Awesome.. Great food, coffee and it continually buzzes. Love it
Gavin
QUE CAFE!. This place just gets it so right, good mince on toast too
Brett
60's rock on the stereo, genuinely friendly staff and a breakfast menu that offered more than egg only combinations. Great value and quality (the fruit salad & beans/bacon were fantastic), I will be back. Just note it's charm is due to small size so don't arrive with a large group.
Lamb Shank
Superb coffee. Very cosy feel. Great location. Friendly staff. Thumbs up!!!

Surprising find. Cute little hole-in-the-wall cafe, with great coffee, service and a sense of style. Especially like the homestyle food e.g. toast soldiers, toad-in-the-hole..and yummy sourdough to boot.
