Review Redfern Continental - Sydney

David Maddison
Flawless! Quite easily the best cooked and tastiest steak that I’ve had in Sydney to date! Super friendly service and we loved sitting outside, watching the local wildlife pass by down Redfern street. Easy to spill into Gunther‘s dining room after for great drinks in such a cool speak easy bar

One of the best restaurants in Redfern, great food and an amazing local vibe

Awesome. Very impressed with a simple menu of great food done really well. Impeccable service all at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.

Hipster join, pretty cool and cozy. Expensive though, but pretty tasty food. So I guess it worth it 😆

The roast chicken was a little dry but, overall, a very enjoyable experience. Delightful staff, quick service and terrific atmosphere. Definitely worth visiting.

Great Food and wine selection, friendly helpful staff. Looking forward to heading back.

Visited this place in a recent trip up to Sydney. The food was absolutely delightful. We had the crab and prawn pasta. Flavors were excellent and pasta was perfectly cooked. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was also quite pleasant. Very reasonably priced for the quality being served up.

Had a fantastic dinner here, 3 courses with matching wine. What more can I say

Simple, delicious home style food.

The eggplant parmigiana was so tasty, even the ravenous carnivore didn’t miss the meat. The pasta is excellent; and the wine list is spot on as well.

A great neighbourhood gem

Enjoyed a midweek dinner here with a friend for a cosy catch up. How did I not know this place existed, and SO close to the station! Staff were really accommodating and easy.

Cosy, neighbourhood winebar vibe out front, and a back bar for more liquid-like catch ups. Rotating specials, but the ragu parpadelle is honestly something else.

Was recommended by a friend who'd had dinner there so tried it out for a Saturday lunch and was overall very disappointed. On the plus side my lamb pappardelle was tasty and plentiful, but my friend's weiner schnitzel was totally overcooked, dry and lacking the crispy coating you expect from a schnitzel. She had been really looking forward to having that dish and when we complained the staff came back and took the price of the two coffees off our bill - not really satisfactory as she had left 2/3rds of her meal after attempting to eat it. The dessert was slightly better but the chocolate sauce had set on the plate making everything stick to it - edible but not as good to eat as it looked. All in all a disappointing birthday lunch for my friend with only the few glasses of decent wine to make up for it. Not sure I would go back for another try.

What a gem of a place. Fantastic spot for a dimly lit nice dinner and drinks.

I started with the zucchini flower which was perfectly fried in a light batter and sprinkled with pecorino cheese. Oh my. I then had the pumpkin and pistachio ravioli in lemon butter sauce. I was worried it was going to be two small of a serving as often other restaurants give you 4 pieces, but this was a good serving size. The pasta was al dente and the flavours were delicate and beautiful.

I tried some of my friends Lamb Pappardelle and it was so flavoursome and rich, it might have actually been my favourite. Staff were friendly and pleasant.

A restaurant and bar in Redfern. It's always pretty busy so put your name down and wait out the back at the bar until your table is ready. The bar has some great cocktails, not your regular type. interesting ingredients and nicely presented. Our table was ready in about 40 minutes and we went to the restaurant. Food options are mostly Italian pastas with some schnitzels etc. I went for the orichette with garlic and chilli. This was ok. I'm not a huge fan of little prawns cut up inside, might be better with large ones. We shared brocolini and fries. Service was quick, very quick.

I've wanted to come here for a while having been attracted by the buzz and the atmosphere .
As it is always "first come , best dressed", I've often been turned away. I was not disappointed, we managed to get a window table (4 people) and the restaurant was pleasantly warm .
We ordered mushroom arancini which we tried with some of the homemade chilli oil . The flavours were incredible and we were all impressed. There were an array of options (all from continental Europe - mixture of Italian and Eastern European predominately) and specials for main , rave reviews for the lamb ragu, beef goulash and prawn pasta . We were all left full, with generous portions even the boys couldn't finish entirely . The Wine list was double sided and comprehensive. Would definitely come back and absolutely recommend it. Service was prompt and friendly , we were finished in an 1 hr 30 which was great for a Wednesday night .

This was our second time here. Our first experience was a year ago for lunch. The service and the food was great. I recommended it.

Last night we went back for dinner, with some friends. Knowing you cannot book a table in the evening, we went early (6:30) however upon arrival the place was busy.

We were greeted by a tall blonde women, giving off far too much attitude for this little establishment and for Redfern. We were told there were no tables available for about an hour therefore we could sit outside (it's winter, no thanks) or sit at the bar.

We selected bar.

The menu is pretty much the same and hasn't changed in a year. The specials were impressive and most of our group ordered something from here.

The service was the area of focus. Despite sitting at the bar and in front of three staff, we had to highlight we needed drinks. Then had to highlight when we were ready to order. And then had to highlight again when we needed more drinks.

It was well over an hour before our meals arrived. In this time a table behind us became available. It would have been great customer service of they had offered to move us. But when one of the bar staff tried to ask the dominant blonde boss women, so pulled a face which pretty much indicated that's never going to happen.

In Short:
- venue still good
- food still very good
- excellent wine selection
- manager (male) very warm and friendly
- maitre de (blonde boss lady) unfriendly
- value for money is good

I still recommend it. Redfern is really coming of age with better good options in the area including Pitt Street Diner and the new Bart Jr

I used to love this place as a regular but unfortunately they have showed me that they just care about money and not the customers experience. Never have I felt so pressured to order so quickly, the girl did not handle the situation professionally.

Mmmmm, mmmm. Two in our party had the seafood linguini and one had the orecchiette and prawns. We also had 6 oysters to share with a nice bottle Spinifex rose from SA. $150 all up. Pretty dang tasty and stylish Italian. Well worth a visit.

A friend who has eaten here before says it depends what you order, some dishes are better than others. My spaghetti and meatballs was tasty. I forgot to ask how his seared tuna was. The side of brussel sprouts were OK, but I've gotten addicted to them being really roasted, rather than quite al dente. A tasty but expensive bottle of Italian Soave, and two cocktails... and it ended up that a pretty simple meal and drinks was $80 each. But such is Sydney. I think it's good there's a popular, higher end restaurant in this particular location and I thought the service was very accommodating and charming.

Super busy on a Friday/Saturday night so be prepared to wait in the back bar for a bit.
Very decent menu with equally decent delivery (food was delicious with minimal faults) however service leaves a lot to be desired. Staff were surly and seemed completely uneducated regarding what was gluten free on the menu... Either that or they just didn't care.
Wasn't a big fan of the blanket 1.5% surcharge on credit card transactions either.
Overall, I'd return for the food but wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again.

We walked in at 6.20pm with half the restaurant empty and asked for a table for two. The response: sorry you'll have to wait for a table to become available. ARE YOU SERIOUS? They wouldn't separate a table of four to accommodate two. And no, you can't reserve tables here either. Ludicrous. I'll never return here.

This review is only about the wait time. It's been 50 minutes since ordering. Still waiting for my food. I have Managed to finish 8 games of monopoly while waiting. Aiming for 10. Let's see.

The spaghetti meatballs here are out of this world - so, so tasty. Definitely the highlight for me. If you like spicy food, add the chilli! The sausages are good, too.

Popped on before event at Giant Dwarf with an empty stomach and 30 mins to spare. Walked out happy having had arancini, meatballs, zucchini flowers and crispy fries plus a couple of drinks. Would go back with more time for the rest of the menu!

Came here last night for a drink with my partner. We wanted to sit outside, but were not told once by our waitress that to sit outside and drink you needed to order a main meal - we got drinks and an entree. After being served our entree another waitress came outside and said by law we can only drink outside the restaurant if we also order mains or we'll have to be moved inside, we moved inside.
I understand that the venue is just doing the right thing and obiding by laws, but when you seat patrons, let them know straight away what the go is. We ordered our drinks (got a story about that as well), then our waitress came out and said we need to order food (she specifically said food, not main) so we ordered entrees, then another girl was sent out to let us know we have to order main. That's just ridiculous, it shouldn't take 3 times to get ab message to a patron and it shouldn't be two different staff members. Our waitress should have told us when we ordered wine that we had to order mains as well, not you have to eat something...
We ordered some oysters to share and I've never seen such a small oyster before, if you guys are going to charge standard for something then it should be a proper size/serving.

Also, I ordered a glass of the pinot grigio (which was $11), and it was a shit small serving! I asked the waitress why it was so small, and she had a quick response, clearly showing she gets asked this a fair bit. I posted a picture of the wine online to see if I was being picky but it prompted a lot of negative comments towards your venue.

I'm really disappointed in the venue. Poor customer service, shitting serving sizes, just overall a really crappy experience. Will not be returning and definitely will be telling everyone to not visit this place.

I've been here many times - trying to love it, but it is so lukewarm on all levels.

The staff seem tired, the food is very average, if you order fish, everything on the plate tastes like oily fish, meatballs bland, schnitzel WAY too thick and raw in the middle. The staff seemed annoyed that I didn't leave a 10% tip on the night - I had to ask myself - did she earn a bonus of $40 that night. No way. It's a great fit-out and location - food and service lets it down. I've had attitude from the tall blonde girl too.

Had a nice lunch here of eggplant involtini and fish of the day (battered flathead). The fish, served as a number of mini fillets with salad and tartare sauce, was light and soft. The involtini, rolled aubergine stuffed with ricotta, baked in a hot pot of tomato sauce, is a beautiful looking dish and tasty. The decor is a mix of the retro and the modern and they have an impressive bar more befitting of a saloon in a western. Quality.

Really cool design set up with its European feel and arty vibe. They do a great schnitty with delicious potatoes!

Nice and relaxed. Coffee isn't great but the food is worth a visit.

We are locals to Redfern and can not believe how poorly the service is. We love to dine out regularly and there have been some great new places opening up in the area. The girl that shows ppl to their seats on Friday nights, the Steward, needs to pick up her game. We find your attitude completely unacceptable and downright degrading. Will not be coming back here again. Don't care how your food is anymore. Such a shame. It started off so well in the beginning, then got too big for its britches. You forgot who made you popular, the loyal locals. If you serve with a bad attitude, the rest is ruined. Plenty of better places to dine at in the area.

Forget Surry Hills, the Fern is where it's at! Easily the best bistro on the Redfern side of town. Start with a cocktail in GDR out the back, then settle in for a long lunch with Schnitzels and other Euro fare in a booth out front.

When sitting at the window bar stools I saw two of the staff cuddling a puppy outside. Very cute though a puppy licking hands & the face of the person who serves you food makes me a bit uncomfortable. One of the girls went in the direction towards the ladies. The other didn't. I had to ask her to go wash her hands. Uncomfortable! Food does lack a bit of taste but for the price it's pretty good. Service needs to step up though, they weren't friendly even before I asked her to wash her hands.. It just needs to be a little more professional!

Friendly and helpful service, kid friendly too. Delicious wine list. Food was nice but nothing astounding. Desserts on the other hand - a semifreddo to die for! A mixed bag on the taste front but a worthwhile if not rave-review-inducing experience.

I have to say I’m surprised by the negative reviews on here. I have found Redfern Continental near perfect at every time of the day. I’ve had a breakfast fruit platter with mimosas- AMAZING, eaten most dishes on the dinner menu which have all hit the spot and drunk too many cocktails out the back in GDR. Weekend afternoons are my favourite at the RC- drinking Aeprol Spritzers, grazing on a Caprese salad and watching the day become night. My personal faves are the meatballs and potatas bravas. On a service level the staff are attentive without being fussy and the staff know the wine list inside and out! Winter is here and so is Redfern Continental!

Unimpressed. We were told that a group of 7 could not be accommodated. When asked if we could have table of 5 and 2, we were told not on Friday night. We didn't find it very funny to be told to ditch a few friends instead.

Tried it twice.... The first time - staff were friendly but breaky was boring as all hell. Decent price, but overall tasteless and I could have made it better myself at home and also present it nicer (I had the pancakes, my friend had the fruit platter - literally a few slices of melon, a couple of strawberries, grapes and half a passionfruit just chucked on a plate). I resolved to give it another go at a later date to try the schnitzel and bratwurst etc because perhaps that was going to be amazing. But then today...
Went in there for a quick coffee and a croissant on a really really rainy weekday. there were probably only 3 other patrons in the place so it wasn't exactly busy.
I was with one friend and the waitress came up to take our order. We both wanted croissants and I inquired for my friend if they could do a ham and cheese croissant. I was promptly told that they didn't have those on the menu. I was in the middle of asking if they had cheese and ham in the kitchen so we could just pay for those as two extra sides and we could assemble it ourselves. I was literally in the middle of talking when the waitress grabbed both our menus and started walking away saying that she'll see what the kitchen could do. Meanwhile, I hadn't finished asking for my croissant (I just wanted it toasted with jam) and we both wanted coffee. I had to kinda stop her from leaving so I could only just make out that I wanted mine with jam and a latte. She nodded, without waiting to hear my friends coffee order. This really wasn't meant to be an ordeal, I mean - they're just croissants! I'm not some kind of connoisseur of croissants but mine came out cold and tasted pretty stale (I originally wanted it toasted, she would have known that if she didn't just storm off) but I wasn't going to complain, I obviously had inconvenienced the establishment so much already for asking for some ham and cheese (which I was more than willing to pay extra for and assemble the thing myself). They brought out a lovely toasted ham and cheese croissant for my friend however which was nice, although a different waitress basically threw it onto the table. She also didn't hear my coffee order so had to ask for those over the counter because there was no way she was coming back to check on us.
Honestly the most unpleasant cafe experience I've had. I've been both a waitress and bar tender for many years and the way we were treated I would never do to anyone, even if they were being the rudest most obnoxious people... I really don't think I was being that!
Anywho... It's a big shame because I've always loved Arcadia Liquors.

Pretty yum. Good as pasta at a decent o ice, but not hand made aye bro

Prices are good and the panini' are great. Staff are nice too. I just can't wait for the real breakfast menu to arrive.

Quite honestly, I don't get what the fuss is about. I must be missing something or Redfern must be missing something in order to make this a big deal.
The food is ordinary, but not in a "classics done really well" kind of way; it's just ordinary and uninspiring. The potatoes accompanying my chicken schnitzel were awful and almost certainly microwaved. In fact, I've had far better schnitzel in countless pubs. The only saving grace was the fairly reasonable price, though I suppose it fails on that front if compared with a pub offering.
Overall, the service was friendly and prompt, although I didn't at all appreciate being asked to move to the back bar for dessert. In my view, it really isn't acceptable to ask patrons to switch tables mid-meal so as to free up space for newcomers.
In short, I really don't think I'll be paying Redfern Continental a second visit. I wanted to like it, but just didn't.

Loving our new Redfern Local!. Loving this new Redfern local restaurant and bar! Had a coffee and panino through the morning coffee window on my way to work (discovered they also do $2 espressos at the bar if you drink in which I love). Came back for dinner that night with friends and had the Veal Schnitzel, Penne Arrabiata, the Vongole and the Spatchcock. Schnitty was big tender and delicious and definitely held its own against our usual favourites at Maggies and Unas, Arrabiata was yummy, and my friends enjoyed their Vongole and Spatchcock too. Want to come back to try more of the small plates - we had a really interesting mussels dish and the calamari fritti which I could eat all night. Peeked out the back to the hidden cocktail bar which looked like some kind of time capsule. We'll definitely be back!

Couldn't Ask For A Better Local Restaurant. This place has it all. Delicious european style food, quality wines, including the house white and red, crisp German weissbier and friendly, fast service. It's very reasonably priced too. Not to mention the Eastern Bloc bar out the back if you want to get loose. You can't book, but if you think about it like an upmarket, all day cafe, then it makes sense.

Shaizen Schnitzel. Look, I'm generally not a troll but i think the community needs to be aware of this place. I'm not sure whether they're trying to be Italian or German but they are not doing either justice. The schnitzel was tasteless with soggy cabbage underneath. Everyone who ordered the schnitzel was applying copious amounts of parmesan to the schnl to add flavour. Best one to avoid unless you're just after a cocktail at the back bar.

Great dinner, great staff.. Came on a Tuesday, with a few Euro friends. We all loved our dinners. Just adored the Bratwurst/Kransky. Fine beers, and an impeccable strawberry dessert too!
Highly recommend it!

Had previously come on a Friday with more than a few friends, but unfortunately couldn't stay to try dinner due to an extra friend coming along later and not having space. The senior staff member had kindly covered the cost of 3 entree's that we'd shared over drinks, and we paid the rest.

Food great; atmosphere great; value for money great; staff great. What more can you ask for in a neighbourhood restaurant. Stands out from the crowd.
