Review Surry Hills Gogyo - Sydney

Hayley Lam
I first came when they were newly opened and again recently. They have improved a lot! The ramen is delicious, of adequate temperature (was too hot first time here and burnt my mouth and couldnt taste anything afterwards) and the broth was rich but well balanced. Very well done ramen. Even bar seating isnt too bad, so dont get put off if they’re busy.

Recommend booking it as it was quite busy even for an early dinner. The ambiance is great, moody and chic. Nice entrées and ramens. My husband loves spicy food but the spicy ramen was a bit too spicy for his taste.

A branch by Ippudo. Nice vibes, excellent ramen. Their spicy ramen is not for the faint-hearted, spice-lovers will love it! Their appetisers and sake were excellent. Ordered: - Spicy Goma Q (9/10) - Karaage Chicken (9/10) - Chilli Shoyu Ramen (10/10) - Tonkotsu Ramen (9/10) - Yuzu Sake (10/10)

Great food, friendly staff!! I visited my uncle’s birthday. Who had enjoyable night with amazing food. Yakko kale salad is soft and crunchy beautiful combination. Tuna tataki is nicely marinated, scallop&prawn gratan is creamy.ikameshi is most try. I feel frying to Japan. Thanks, Goryo team, I highly recommend

Lovely restaurant with great ambience, our waiter was very patient with our table when we were deciding on what to order. We really appreciate that! Ordered the beef tataki, scallops, potatoes, cold vermicelli and some Ramen. Broth tasted alright, but the noodles were too heavy. The Rock potatoes were nice and crispy, the sauce that came with it was amazing! The scallops were very overpriced ($13 each) and it was just filled seafood mix, mushrooms on a shell. The Wagyu steak was very good, cooked perfectly. Unfortunately I found the cold vermicelli noodles not as appetising because it was chewy. Their salmon sashimi was fresh but presentation could've been better, the seaweed underneath overpowered the salmon. Most of the dishes had a similar theme of seaweed, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. Ended the night with the black sesame cheesecake which was fresh, creamy and delicious!

Sorry for didn’t pose any photos of the food, because they didn’t wear hair protection when cooking that I found a hair in the karaage chicken(-1 star). But then gave me a new delicious one soonly(1 star for service, 1 star for food taste). And here is a good place for relaxing with friends and family (1 star).

Loved the vibe of the restaurant! Played really nice jazz covers that blended nicely into the background. Food was also amazing. Probably one of the best karaage chicken I’ve ever had! My shoyu ramen was memorable as well. I’ll definitely be back!

Really enjoyed our evening here - of course the ramen is a star but I thought the Wagyu spring rolls were unique and loved the simplicity of the cucumber. You guys should add cocktails to the menu to round it all off. Will be back again

Nothing beats good quality ramen. Great for those cold days. Gogyo offers a limited ramen menu however each dish seems refined. Can get quite busy on weekends so I suggest booking in advanced. Staff is attentive. Would recommend

I definitely had my ramen fix after visiting Gogyo for lunch! The weather was cold and raining, we were seated quite quickly even though they were busy for a Monday lunch. <br/><br/>We ordered a few dishes - their signature ramen, tonkatsu, sukiyaki spring rolls and karaage chicken. I compared both ramens and actually preferred the tonkatsu broth over their signature. The signature has a more bitter flavour however the tonkatsu has more of a porky and depth of flavour. <br/><br/>The spring rolls were amazing and I really also enjoyed the karaage chicken. The food came out quickly and staff were super friendly with us. <br/><br/>We had no bad issues overall with the restaurant. The only thing is that I preferred the tonkatsu over their signature. I would come back again to try their dinner menu.

Real rating: 8.7/10 <br/><br/>We ordered the burnt miso ramen and the tonkotsu ramen. Personally, I liked the tonkotsu ramen more, as the soup base was really flavourful. When food is done well, it can be an art. I would say the burnt miso ramen is an acquired taste, while I can see why some people might like it, it’s definitely not for everybody.
Jason Choi
Ramen is flavourful, not too salty like a lot of othe ramen joints. Staff are very friendly. Ambience is very sleek. They have other finger foods worth trying as well.
Johnny Pan
Really enjoyed the signature burnt ramen although maybe a bit on the salty side. The king prawn guacamole was surprisingly the highlight as it tasted so much better than I expected.

If you are keen to try a different style of ramen, this place serves a kind of ‘burnt’ broth which is served black. It has a distinct charred taste, slightly bitter. It’s not for everyone, I was keen to try it as I love ramen and wanted to taste this broth that was being raved about. It was different and It was tasty but wouldn’t say it is a type of broth I would crave. The miso eggplant is cooked well here.

One of the best ramen restaurant, love the burnt miso base. It's very complex but it was really good. It is hard to describe, there was too much going on in terms of flavours. The chasu is really good, melts in your mouth and perfectly cooked. The service is excellent, the waitress are funny. She made a cute mistake and it was pretty entertaining.<br/><br/>Would recommend to dine and come back!

Really good ramen place near Central station - restaurant is know for its burnt miso ramen - flavour was rich with noodles and egg cooked perfectly, bamboo shoots were tasty. Cocktails were made with a good balance between sweet sour and bitter #recommend the yuzu one

- ramen is pretty good: lots of flavour <br/>- love the gyoza so much<br/>- karaage chicken was soooo delicious <br/>- umeshu and yuzushu options in the drinks list was a huge plus<br/>- great atmosphere!<br/>- make a reservation to get good seats!

Customer service: Amazing, staff are always friendly and very welcoming.<br/><br/>Been here twice without a booking, first time was when I was heavily pregnant. The hostess was extremely nice and thoughtful, she saw that I was pregnant so advised there are seats available at the bar however if we can wait about 10 minutes she will be able to clear a table for me as it’s easier for me to get in and out. <br/><br/>Second time I came this time with a pram, those who has been here would know that it is not that spacious however the hostess managed to find seats near the bar so we can fit the pram without anyone bumping into us so we can enjoy our food.<br/><br/>Food:<br/>Grilled scampi are amazing, sweet and tender meat cooked perfectly it just melts in your mouth. <br/><br/>The ramens are by far my favourite ramen in Sydney, the soup is full of flavour, meat so soft and tender. <br/><br/>If you love ramen you must try this place!

I had an amazing night of fun and food at Kyoto Gogyo (in Japan), where I had first tasted the divine flavours that was the Burnt Miso Ramen. This was my absolute favourite ramen in the whole world, and the umami and depth of charred smokey flavour is on another level.<br/><br/>When I found out that Gogyo opened up in Sydney, I booked a flight there just so I can go.<br/><br/>The restaurant was packed, and on a Saturday night there was 2 hour wait at peak dinner time. Worth it! The wagyu beef spring rolls were super tasty. And although there was a smaller menu of ramen broth bases, the burnt broth option at Sydney's Gogyo was still much more superior to many of the ramen places in the country. Perhaps a touch too much ginger for my liking, but still amazing and generously portioned.<br/><br/>PLEASE EXPAND TO MELBOURNE!!
Edy Lee
One of my favourite place to eat once in a while.<br/>Alway cozy and friendly service.<br/>The only thing i tried here is ramen and karage.<br/>So far my fave ramen is the Black Garlic Ramen. <br/>Usually i wait for 1-2 mins before i eat my ramen because the noodles is a bit undercooked for me. But its the best after 1-2 mins.<br/>
Giulia Goolia
The best Ramen in Sydney hands down. When it’s Winter, I live for the veggie SOBA. <br/>The spring rolls and sushi are always a good time too. I tend to go with my best friend, slurping is not cute.
Fat Journey
Good service. Nice gyoza but just a so so ramen. First of all, chicken broth for a ramen is a no. As for the pork broth, it taste like ippudo at some point with a few tweaks. As a Japanese food lover, this doesn’t make me want to eat more.
Charlene K
Ippudo’s fancier sister, gogyo! I enjoy the ramen here especially now during winter time. Their signature is delicious, but their non-ramen dishes are great as well
Fork 'n' Spoon
Slightly set back from the footpath on Albion Street, you could easily miss this restaurant if you didn't know it was there. Just a simple banner indicating the establishment.<br/>I was pleasantly surprised this place is part of the Ippudo group. Ippudo is a well known Ramen chain in Asia (and Australia) that caters to regional tastes. So from country to country you will never find the same dishes on the menu. I had ramen at an Ippudo restaurant in Shanghai, so knew the quality would be good. Now I was very excited!<br/>The exposed brick walls, an open kitchen, this place has an intimate upmarket feel without the price tag. A lovely decor and ambience for a romantic date night.<br/>Most ramen dishes ranging from $17 to $19.<br/>My favourite daughter chose the Tori Shoyu $17 and I chose the Tonkotsu Modern $18, plus 3 pieces of the Karaage Chicken to start.<br/>The wait was not long before the Kaarage chicken arrived. WOW!! This is the best kaarage chicken I have ever had. The coating was crispy and the chicken so moist, you could taste subtle flavours of the marinade the chicken was immersed in.<br/>The ramen did not disappoint either. A big bowl of beautiful noodles and broth was super tasty too. Very filling and well worth the price.<br/>Will definitely will be back to try the other ramen dishes.<br/>The only disappointment was they charged an extra 0.5% for using eftpos, or 1% for tapping/credit card.<br/><br/>

Gorgeous modern Japanese aesthetic. We popped in randomly on a chilly winters night in search of ramen. Almost got distracted by the amazing menu, and did add 2 small bites, how good are edamame when they’ve been charred a bit? Yum. Asahi in tap is a big winner too. Loved the ramen. Keen to return to try more.

This place is pretty popular but I wasn’t blown away. I’m giving it 4 stars as nothing was wrong, but I remember not being super impressed but satisfied. Perhaps I should return and test it out again (in case I’m being too harsh)
Diana Vieira
Amazing place for a comfort food at lunch or dinner. I tried already three different ramen and both were really good. Nice staff and fast service!
Matrosovaanna.unsw
The best ramen in Sydney. Plum sake is must try! The personnel is very friendly. I don’t know how I could live without knowing that this place is existing ❤️
Maggie Ko
Really enjoyed their ramen and edamame but unfortunately this would be my last visit. Was there last night at the bar seat and towards the end of my meal one of the cooks knocked my bowl of ramen noodle soup over and it ended all over my lap. Thank god it was lukewarm but my clothes were ruined. Didn't get much of an apology and then ended up still having to pay for everything but the knocked over ramen.

This place made me like ramen. I thought I hated it until I ate it at Gogyo and now I am obsessed with it. Love this spot not just for the ramen. It’s damn good Japanese food. I can’t wait to visit again! #ramen #japanesefood
I'll Never Be Skinny
The tonkatsu broth tastes nice but too light for my liking! You’d go back for the charred black ramen and the ramen noodle texture is the best I’ve had but the broth taste isn’t rich enough for me.! 🍜🍜 love the ambiance !
Mshelenlaw
Delicious tonkatsu broth leaving lips feelings sticky and satisfied, this wonderful bowl of goodness does take me back to slurping up ramen in Japan, would definitely return!
Boyfriends Who Cook
We celebrated our 500-day anniversary (yes, we celebrated such a thing) at Gogyo, and were so happy with our choice of dinner for the night! We started the dinner with a little hiccup, with the restaurant not having made a note of our online booking; but that didn't stop them from organising a table immediately.<br/><br/>Stefan and I have a rule - we try things we've never eaten before only at restaurants that we think will serve the best quality produce/catch. We trusted Gogyo with our first ever Kingfish Sashimi experience, and voila! I need to rethink my not-so-amazing feels about Nori, and Sashimi can definitely be a part of our palette going forward! We also ordered the Karaage Chicken, and you don't really go wrong with frie(n)d chicken, do you? <br/><br/>We enjoyed our first ever Sashimi experience, but we were really only there for Ramen. Stefan and I bonded over pizza, and ramen almost sealed the deal for us to be together. Both have questionable levels of fat, but who cares when it's a cheat day, right? <br/><br/>Over time, the German one of us has started ordering the spicier variants (Chilli Shoyu on this visit), while the Indian one (yours truly) chose the oh-so-amazing Tori Shoyu. He loved the chilli infused minced pork that blended so beautifully with the chicken broth, and I sneaked a few spoons of it between bites. My Tori Shoyu was sensational as well, addressing my love for salt and bursting with all the other flavours! <br/><br/>We couldn't have finished the meal without dessert, so we ordered the Taiyaki - we enjoyed it, but could have left it off too. Didn't really 'spark joy' as the previous courses, but that's just our view of it. Let us know if you think differently?<br/><br/>We recommend Gogyo for a quiet date night, with friendly staff rightfully flagging spice levels before you confirm your order, organising tables if something was amiss in the world of technology, and their swift service with smiling faces across all courses of the meal!

Intrigued by their kogashi-style (burnt) ramen, I came here twice to try both of their kogashi ramens. <br/><br/>The Kogashi Shoyu ramen had a very thick oil layer with grey-brown lard/scum floating on top of their thick soup base (pretty sure that scum should have been sieved out) - probably way too much oil and salt for my personal preferences, as each strand of ramen tasted like it was coated in oil and I was dying from thirst afterwards. Whilst still with a similar thick soup base, the Kogashi Miso ramen was much more balanced in terms of flavour and with (slightly) less oil/lard as well as salt. <br/><br/>Their ramen are definitely not something to eat on a regular basis... more of a occasional (or rare) treat, ideal on a cold winter's night.

Amazing ambience and taiyaki w ice cream 🍦❤️<br/><br/>Must order: king prawn guacamole, gyoza, red bean taiyaki.<br/><br/>Tbh, i dont really like their ramen flavours (ordered Kogashi Miso), but i guess its just a personal choice.

Gogyo originates from the same creators of the well known ramen chain Ippudo, that graces the streets of Surry Hills with its own unique menu of side dishes and ramen - their specialty is a must try for any ramen fan! <br/><br/>This specialty is ‘Kogashi’ (charred!) ramen which is concocted by purposefully BURNING ladlefuls of lard in a wok over high heat, then adding miso paste or a special soy base, followed by broth. What you end up with is this delightfully intriguing thick black soup with a unique smokey flavour. We tried the Kogash miso ($18) and personally, I wasn’t amazed by the taste (perhaps I’m more of a white tonkotsu traditionalist) but the flavours were definitely very interesting and different. Would recommend to try this innovation at least once! <br/><br/>The Crackling Piggy Roll ($6) was also yummy with a soft milk bun (yum) and the Karaage Chicken was pretty standard ($16 for 6pc). I’d love to come back and try their other ramen. <br/><br/>Go, go, go Gogyo!
Jesslikestoeat
After hearing so many good ratings about the kogashi miso ramen and being recommended it my friends, I finally got around to trying it. Unfortunately I was quite disappointed to find that I did not like the charred flavouring at all. The side dishes however were nice (gyoza and chicken).
On The Food Hunt
I really enjoyed gogyo, the service was prompt and the food came quickly. The wagyu spring roll and the crackling piggy roll were amazing 4.5/5! Would highly recommend. The rock potatoes were crispy and the mayo on top was a good mix. The nasu dengaku was super crispy on the outside but succulent on the inside. The wagyu was so tender and the mushrooms were flavored so well. The only thing I didn’t like was the ramen we ordered. It was ok but nothing like the other dishes. We tried the kagashi miso as recommended by the waiter but it was mainly just noodles with 2 pieces of pork. Overall a great place and I will be back!
YUXIPANDA
Amazing ramen! One of my favourite spots in Sydney perhaps only rivalled by Ippudo. The tonkatsu broth was full of flavour and really enjoyed the ambience and customer service. Would recommend and will be back to try out the other ones!

Gogyo has been on my 'To dine list' for some time and with bookings for table of 4 unavailable 3 weeks in advance it was difficult to get a chance to secure a spot. On a whim we scored a walk-in table near the entrance of the restaurant very early on saturday night. We were lucky as people who did the same were turned away. The ambience was incredible with attention to detail extending to the bathroom. I was very impressed by the burnt miso ramen and the chicken karage. I was so impressed by the staff's service however a bit upset when they turned down my request for a takeaway container to take home unfinished bowl of ramen.

Eating here was an absolute pleasure. Would very much recommend you book in advance as is often very full. The decor is stunning and feels very classy and fancy without it being intimidating. The service was great and never felt like I had to flag down a waiter or waitress, they seemed to be there every time I needed service, but didn’t hover around. The food was stunning. The crackling piggy rolls were probably my fav thing about this place. We got the gyoza which next time I would probably skip, it was okay, but it was the only thing we ordered where I felt like I had eaten something similar to this before. I preferred their tonkotsu ramen to their charred miso but both were wonderful. I found the charred miso ramen to hit a bit too heavy and thick and hard to eat, although I’m glad I tried it as it’s what they’re famous for. The noodles are thin and chewy. Can not recommend this place enough, it’s also very close to central so easy to get to and from. It cost $61 for the two piggy rolls, a serving of goyza and two ramen, which felt very cheap considering how fancy this place looked, how great the service was and how tasty the food is.
HANGRYSAB
Without a doubt my favourite ramen restaurant in Sydney. After eating ramen in Japan, I struggled to find places in Sydney that even came close. Gogyo delivered with its unique charred ramen. Admittedly, I have only tried both of their charred ramens and haven't ventured out to their other ramen - but I simply can't go past it. The charred flavour is definitely not for everyone, so if you are hesitant I would suggest maybe sharing with a friend first to test the waters. The Kogashi Miso is a lot more rich, whereas the Kogashi Shoyu is a lot lighter. Both are great however I personally prefer the shoyu. <br/>Not only is the ramen delicious, the side dishes at Gogyo are just as good, if not better. I love a simple edamame but their Chargrilled Edamame is to die for! It is so flavoursome and unlike any other edamame I have ever tried. Their Nasu Dengaku is one of my favourite eggplant dishes ever. It has a tempura like feel to it - crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. I think even eggplant haters will like this dish.  Gogyo's Piggy Roll is the perfect combination of flavours and textures. It just might be the best bread I've ever tasted? These 3 dishes are a must-order in my opinion. <br/>Gogyo recently released new menu items, with the addition of sushi. I have only tried the Char-grilled Scampi and it is delicious. I would highly recommend going with a group so that along with your ramen, you'll be able to try more of their sides. <br/>Bookings at Gogyo are essential as they do not pick up their phone. I have tried to walk in for dinner on a weeknight only to be told that they are booked out! I usually go to Gogyo for lunch on the weekend, as I find that you can just walk in and you'll have access to the full menu (as opposed to a restricted lunch menu on weekdays). <br/>Amazing food, great service, decent prices - what more could you ask for?
Helen | Grab Your Fork
Gogyo's specialty is kogashi-style ramen, a buttery charred broth that requires lard to be heated in a wok to an eyebrow-singing 300 degrees Celsius. We order the kogashi miso ramen, but you can order the kogashi shoyu (soy sauce) variation too. <br/><br/>The slick of oil across the surface of the ramen is an indication of its richness. Its smokiness is more on the nutty side, like brown butter pushed to the edge than say, the smokiness you associate with woodfire. There's a mouth-filling buttery richness to the soup, coating each noodle strand with defiance.
Jess
It’s good, but not the best ramen in Sydney as many people appear to be shouting from the rooftops. We shared the burnt miso and burnt shoyu ramen. Nice smokiness and depth of flavor but so oily and therefore hard to finish, although that’s where the nice crisp beer comes in handy. Service and atmosphere were great.
Eats With Marie
Hands down one of my favourite new restaurants this year, Gogyo has reconfirmed my admiration for Shigemi Kawahara, i.e. the same guy that brought us Ippudo, i.e. the creator of my ramen dreams. After two visits, I’m in love with this Japanese eatery, which serves refined small plates alongside big bowls of slurpable Kogashi-style ramen.
Haruru
I had Kogashi Syoyu. It tasted amazing, nice n thick, rich, oily. I love this taste. The chashu was very soft and delicious. The portion is a little bit small for the price. The service is regular.<br/>19/10/18
Nelly
I still dream about the ramen here. Hands down best ramen I’ve had in Sydney! Get the charred tonkotsu - you won’t be disappointed!! The gyoza is also full of flavor and karaage is juicy and tender. Make sure you make a booking as they are booked out most nights.
Arnold Trisno
Went here last sunday to celebrate my mum’s birthday..nice place and ambiance..I ordered tonkotsu modern..the food was exceptional..the kids ordered the shoyu ramen. would love to come back again someday..totally recommended for ramen lovers out there...
Lilmsmangosteen
The Kogashi miso ramen is really yummy and totally exceeded my expectations. I’m usually not a fan of hakata ramen but this is awesome!!! Fancy restaurant and reasonably priced. Service is great too. Will be back when my next craving kicks in :)
Marcela Purnomo
Amazing place, it's a fusion between a ramen bar and a modern bar, has a very warm and inviting ambiance and very friendly staff. We tried a combination of the Kogashi Miso, Kogashi Shoyu and Tonkotsu Modern. The charred base was wonderful and it taste like nothing we've ever tried before. The Kogashi Miso is much thicker and very rich, and for most of us it ends up a little too rich for just one person have. The Kogashi Shoyu is much lighter but still have the same base of the charred taste, so that's what we prefer in the end. I recommend sharing the Kogashi Miso between a few people, and ordering other things in the menu along with it. Their gyoza is also handmade and is very delicious, recommended.
Makan
It was a busy little place when we visited after work on a Monday night. The ambience is casual with a nice bar layout. The staff were polite and prompt. They took our number and told us it was a 30 mins wait.<br/><br/>We ordered the burnt miso ramen with gyoza and chicken karage. The ramen came out firm and chewy just like how we liked it. The thinly sliced pork was delicious and really well seasoned! The miso broth was interesting with a slight burnt aftertaste. It was salty and slightly oily. We enjoyed this as it was quite unlike any other miso ramen we’ve tasted. The gyoza was tasty but nothing special. The only disappointment was the chicken karage which was over fried with burnt bits.<br/><br/>Overall it was a good meal and certainly worth the 30 mins wait!
The Miniature Life
Gogyo is a relatively new opening in Surry Hills by the founder and mastermind of Ippudo Shigemi Kawahara, with a menu that really does surprise. I was pretty excited to try out the food here, considering just how much I enjoy ramen and in particular the ramen at Ippudo, but I have to mention it was the charred miso ramen that caught my immediate attention on the menu. This is probably the biggest surprise you would see here - why would someone deliberately burn the soup and serve it up?
HungryForMore
We wanted to try this place because we had such good memories of Gogyo in Kyoto with the 'burnt' ramen. This place in Surry Hills has a modern, stylish look with light wood and dim lights, and service was very efficient.  We ordered the Kogashi Miso and Kogashi Shoyu, not knowing whether the 'charred' description was the same as the 'burnt' ones we had in Kyoto. There were no sign of flames from torching the soup from the kitchen. The flavours were quite strong, especially the Kogashi Miso, but did not seem to be the same as Kyoto version from memory. The standard portions are about the same as Ippudo. It was still tasty, and I'd go back for a strong-brothed ramen fix, but with extras next time!
Moe Thet Htaa
My second time visiting Gogyo. Absolutely love the flavours and the setting. Service is great. Unfortunately this time there was only one slice of charshu in my ramen. Other than that it’s one of the best I’ve had.
Food Is Really Great
You have to try the charred miso ramen at least once! It has a very unique .... barbecue? taste. The restaurant is quite fancy, it feels like a good place to go with a group.
Why__dee
We tried Gogyo in Kyoto and I can say that the one in sydney is better. Much bigger space and feels a bit “cleaner”. Can’t go wrong with the burnt miso ramen and the gyozas (we didn’t get the gyozas this time but it’s a must!) Also, try their desserts! The Taiyaki was a bit disappointing to be honest, but the Sobacha ice cream that comes with it is 🤤 SO GOOD!
Oodreiilittlepotato
Word can’t describe how good the dishes are! <br/>The ladyboss cocktail! Not to sweet not to bitter (lemon mix) but nice and light go well with ramen.<br/>1. Crackling piggy roll. The meat is so juicy and tender so gooooood! Good for starter!<br/>2. Grilled scampi. Small portion~ the sauce is the highlight of the dish.<br/>3. Kogashi miso. YES TO THIS RAMEN! Recommended~ so flavourful, tasty, creamy just sooooooooo good🤤 a perfection in a bowl.<br/>4. Edamame : unusual edamame which they kind of grilled it? But sooooooooooo good! Like legit good. <br/>5. Fried rock potato: just potato hehehe nothing more but still good. <br/>6. Shio soba: so light~ the soup is not heavy at all. Really nice for hot weather! :)
Dee
this place has a nice setting not too far of a walk from central station which is a good thing for fatasses like myself. I highly recommend the kingfish sashimi for all those raw fish lovers out there ! It’s definitely worth a try. The food in general were abit too salty for my preference and the I also had the charred ramen. I prefer the sides rather than the ramen tho.
Good Food Good Life
Not sure why the high score, but I find everything to be really overvalued. The only good thing about this place is the servicebut make sure you finish everything because they don't have take-away containers.
Mary Tran
If you’re a fan of Japanese side dishes, I would recommend the king fish sashimi, salmon sashimi and wagyu flank. Seafood was so fresh and flavoursome. Ramen was too oily for my liking, it would be better shared. We got the Kogashi Shoyu and Tonkatsu Modern. I found the broth too oily, especially the Kogashi Shoyu. However, I did like the texture of noodles. Ramen servings are decent, and their house made ice cream is worth a try. Overall would come back.
Tanya
Came here since I was in the area and boy was I skeptical. As someone who’s not really a fan of ramen and has had a bad run with ramen places (that are apparently good according to reviews) I thought I may have the same experience here. I was pleasantly surprised... wow, what a treat! We ordered:<br/>- Tonkotsu modern: this was full of flavour and delicious. My partner had this one and doesn’t really like ramen either but he found this really great. I had a try of the broth and I agreed that this was very flavourful and worked really well with the noodles, spicy sauce and miso. The noodles were also really well made. Overall, a great dish. <br/>- shio soba: this was nice as well but not as great as the other dish. This has a chicken broth which wasn’t really that flavourful. I really liked the noodles and and condiments though. Everything worked well together. I was still quite pleased with this dish.<br/>-nasu dengaku: I was surprised at this one. this isn’t the regular nasu dengaku I am used to but it was actually pretty yummy. The tempura batter was super thin so it was crisp on the outside but not thick enough to be sickening or take over from the flavour of the eggplant. It also looked very pretty.<br/><br/>Overall, I thought the food was above average. I really enjoyed all dishes for different reasons and it was a very pleasant experience. I did feel that the restaurant ambience was a little out of place. It seemed like they were going for a fancier/modern look erring on the side of fine dining but everyone eating here obviously didn’t get the memo. (We were all super casual looking). Service was also good. The dishes were a bit expensive but that’s expected for the area. Drinks were super pricey as well ($5 for a can of Schweppes lemonade) but once again, probably because of the area. I’ll definitely be back if I feel like ramen again.
Josie
We went here with reservations which was a good op depending on how busy it got. The eccentric menu was definitely an adventure and it was a delightful one. Their famous charcoal ramen is defs a hit
Emily
Overall, the place is better than most I’ve been but not quite astonishing. I had read reviews before going and luckily ordered two ramen which were not as thick, which I personally enjoyed. The fish was cooked just right in that it wasn’t raw or overly cooked. The karage chicken was crispy and was a classic (loved it). The Taiyaki was also a classic but the the flavouring of ice cream was interesting and made it quite enjoyable.<br/><br/>Ambience was very enjoyable and customer service was absolutely rapid and plausible! <br/>The best part was the toilet, love it! Had everything! <br/><br/>I would recommend and definitely will be going again to try more variety.
Xoxo.msjamie
Everything here is made and presented with great attention to detail. The pork belly buns and tempura eggplant is delicious, as is the beautiful steak cooked medium rare. Their signature ramen is the burnt miso black ramen soup base and it’s has strong bold flavours and a bit on the oily side which I didn’t mind. They also have classic tonkotsu ramen which my partner preferred. It has become one of my favourite ramen joint in Sydney.

What is better than a hot bowl of ramen on a cold winters night. Was told we had to wait 40mins as we did not make a booking but lucky for us we only had to wait less than 20 mins (also considering it was a Saturday night). The highlight of our meal was the tempura miso eggplant, wagyu spring rolls and the tonkotsu ramen - definitely warms the soul!
Benkyousuru
I had a friend constantly bringing up this place called gotta. I was sceptical of whether it was worth trying or not, a little research and I found out it was under the ippudo group. It had a simplistic and spacious interior that suits the type of cuisine. The bar area was completely packed, you could oversee the chefs hard at work. Service didn’t feel particularly warm and welcoming, nevertheless it was acceptable. Being ramen, we didn’t have to wait too long for food to be served. <br/><br/>Kogashi shoyu - wonderful charred notes that really packs a punch. Noodles were springy yet cooked, holding well against the strong broth. Though I felt the chicken flavours were mostly masked, it does make up for it in umami. And of course plenty of flavourful oil to clog up your arteries.<br/><br/>Gyoza- wasn’t extraordinary but a solid textbook gyoza.

Price: 3.5/5<br/>Taste: 4/5<br/>Service: 5/5<br/>Decor and presentation: 4.5/5<br/>Visits: 1<br/><br/>Gogyo is owned by the same people who introduced Ippudo to Australia however the ramen they serve is very different. We came just as they were about to open and they kindly let us in early out of the cold. The staff are very professional and attentive to your needs. I ordered the kogashi shoyu which had a very distinct burnt taste as I hoped for, however it was a little fatty for my tastes so next time I go back I will be trying the kogashi miso. The meal was a little expensive on a student budget but definitely worth the spend.
Excuse Me Waiter
There’s been quite a bit of fanfare surrounding the arrival of the famous Japanese ramen joint Gogyo in Australia, which is the sister restaurant to the ever popular Ippudo ramen eateries. As huge fans of Ippudo, we decided to make the trip to the slopes of Surry Hills to find out if Gogyo’s signature burnt miso ramen lives up to the hype.

I'll keep this short and sweet - great ramen, great vibes. It's rare I finish my meals and here I ate every gram. Love it. Will be back regularly.

Such a cozy place, yummy foods and friendly staffs. Highly recommend if your looking for a ramen place in Sydney :) Better call for a reservation if you wanna come at night time during the weekend.

Hailing all the way from Kyoto, along with their incredible palate, Gogyo definitely brings the kickass rebelliousness of its original home. Ramen is a dish born out of fusion, developed out of convenience and blossomed thereafter. It is such a unique dish that knows no bounds – and in that sense, Gogyo delivers.
Look Mum No Hands
Since my first trip to Japan last year, I’ve longed to begin a series on Look Mum No Hands about Ramen in Sydney. I’m under no delusions that I will experience anything close to what I ate in Tokyo, but the pursuit to satiate my cravings ought to be well documented, if there’s any chance of a future go-to emerging. Behold; “Everybody Loves Ramen”

Love the burnt ramen especially on a chilly night, nice atmosphere and friendly waiters. It’s pretty convenient - a short walk from central too! Bookings essential though it books out quite fast.

I was expecting more as many people liking this restaurant ;(<br/>Service was friendly and reasonable. I loved my counter seat where I can see how my ramen is made :)<br/><br/>

What a lovely secluded place. Hidden gem in the city. Fully packed on weekday and had to wait for approx 10 mins to get seated. Taste and meal portions were right fit and worth the bucks. <br/>PS: Please make reservations for your visit

After hearing great things about Gogyo, we thought we had to come try after work. <br/>We went on a Tuesday night without a reservation and was lucky to get a seat at the high tables, we recommend booking in advance as it does get quite busy. <br/>The staff were attentive and friendly and very helpful in helping us choose what to order. <br/>We ordered the school prawn isobe-age (deliciously friend small prawns and seasoned perfectly), the Nasu Dengaku (beautiful soft textured miso glazed eggplant). For the pasta we tried the Kogashi Miso (amazing charred miso base, one of our top picks) and the Gogyo Tonkotsu Modern (silky pork broth).<br/>

Sarah, Jeff and I went to Gogyo well over two months ago, so this post is extremely delayed. Our gang of three meet often over food. It’s surprising that we’re able to do this when we each have very different interests and different palates, yet we somehow manage to make eating out together, work. Ramen is one of the food items that sits squarely, at the crux of our Venn diagram.

Myself and partner headed here on a Saturday night and got there about 6:45 - they said and hour wait so we headed to Kegs N Brews and waited, headed back after an hour and no call so just asked and she had us sat in five minutes. We had the gyoza and Karrage to start and that was delicious, not drop dead amazing - but delicious. Matt had the chili Ramen and he was crying through out the meal, but he assured me good tears and the ramen was not for the faint of heart. My Kogashi Ramen was other worldly and was unlike anything I’ve had - liquified Burnt fat - I was skeptical but my goodness it was great! I would go again for the ramen, but make a booking! I’ll be back!

Went to gogyo with a couple of friends. Was greeted with friendly customer service which was quite prompt. Ordered the 2nd ramen on the list and quite enjoyed it. Wouldn't be a ramen that I would eat everyday but something to try out. Had some of the other smaller dishes as well which were well flavoured. The eggplant and chicken kaarage especially were amazing. Only downside is that it's a bit more expensive than your usual Japanese food but you pay for quality ingredients and quality service.

Amazing experience. Best ramen ever. Piping hot soup - just the way I like it and had pork fat floating on the top just like the Onomichi style ramen I had in Japan. Egg was tasty despite not being soya sauce marinated. I finished half the soup because it was not too salty like how ramen can be sometimes. Noodles were cooked to perfection, chewy but not undercooked. Bamboo shoots didn't taste like it was straight from the jar. We had fun sitting at the bar watching the staff follow their meticulous process of making the ramen. School prawns were light and crunchy. Loved the seaweed flakes on it. Dessert was Taikyaki with Sobacha sorbet. You can't get any more Japanese than that. Could not find any faults except for the music at full blast in the bathroom and no non-acholic beverage menu. Will come back for sure to try the other ramen flavours.

Been meaning to try this place for so long and finally scored a booking, this is more of a high end ramen joint so I do recommend booking or else you’d have to wait quite abit for walk ins as they are quite busy on the weekend. <br/>Love the ambience and service was exceptional!! I got the charred miso ramen and my partner ordered the chilli shoyu, and we started with salmon sashimi and wagyu tataki was to die for, definitely recommend ordering the wagyu. <br/><br/>The charred miso on the other hand is not for the faint hearted, flavours are super bold and you can definitely taste the “charred” flavour, unfortunately not my cup of tea I probably prefer the original tonkotsu ramen more. <br/>My partner did enjoy his chilli shoyu ramen, and let me tell you it definitely chilli! <br/><br/>Overall experience was lovely, service was good and the restaurant did have a lovely ambience, there is also a small wine & cocktail list, definitely suitable for a social night out with friends or family as well!
Spooning Australia
GOGYO is a master in the ramen world, does Gogyo have the best ramen in Sydney??? That's a resounding yes for me, although to be fair I haven’t tried all the ramen in Sydney. The Kogashi are a wonderful heavy specialty ramen – if you chose to indulge regularly you would die but on occasion they are dishes that will blow your mind but not your wallet. If ramen is your game and you have yet to visit GOGYO – you need to fix this culinary discrepancy immediately.

Visited to try their famous burnt miso ramen. Let's just say I'd go elsewhere in the city for ramen. Though it was a unique broth, it didn't attract as something delicious. Flavour profile is dominated by this savoury, salty taste with undertones of miso that's burnt. Chashu on top also wasn't that tender but the noodles were cooked well. Portion was also rather small. Their tonkotsu ramen was good, but not the best. Regardless, it was good to try and the restaurant space was cute.

Top 3 ramen of my life - the charred broth is like no other ramen I've ever tasted (but I do recommend a healthy dollop of their gyoza chilli paste with it!). The floor staff aren't the friendliest or most helpful, but the ambiance is great and the food is worth a 2-day-in-advance booking.

Gogyo is a really convenient walk from central station. There is a warm ambience surrounding the restaurant and I definitely recommend booking before coming. We didn't book but arrived really early so didn't have to wait, but whilst we were eating a line started growing. Ordered the Kogashi Miso Ramen and the Gogyo Tonkotsu. The Kogashi Miso was quite salty and initially reminded me of Jajangmyeon. The Tonkotsu broth was quite mild compared to that of the charred miso, but both had very standard toppings but the chashu was really melty. The staff are very friendly and attentive.

Time to check out the newly opened Gogyo (same owners at Ippudo) with their heavily advertised charred Miso base Ramen. We didn't make any booking thinking it's a casual restaurant but how wrong we were. It's actually semi formal and had a warm ambience, wished we booked! As a penalty we had to sit on the high tables for walk ins. <br/><br/>We ordered three of the ramen variety (Kogashi Miso, Gogyo Tonkatsu, Chili Shoyu). I liked the charred Miso base Ramen the most as the other spicy mince pork ramen was too hot! We also had gyoza and school prawns to share. Both were good. There was a long queue halfway through our meal so as didn't linger. Nice place!

Best ramen! Their signature dish is the burnt miso ramen and wow. The broth is so tasty, it is chicken based whereas most of the others are pork based I believe. I finished the whole bowl. It's definitely enough food for one person, you don't need to order any sides or anything. We also got spring onions to sprinkle on top which was good. My friend thinks this is like the ramen in Japan, apparently they have a restaurant there as well (it's a chain). Will return!!

Much yum! Very ramen! Visiting Gogyo not long after it opened in January, I was well pleased with my decision to book a table in advance. As we were ushered into the bar while our table was readied, unprepared hipsters were told to sit and wait. Starting off with the Wagyu spring rolls, I was not disappointed. Crispy and tasty, with a generous amount of wagyu, I could have easily eaten a plate to myself. Of course we had to try the signature charred ramen. I chose the Charred Kogashi Shoyu ramen, while my dining companion chose the miso based version. Dark smokey umami goodness! They were out of the thicker noodles after a busy day, so we were apologetically offered the thin version. Perfectly al dente, this was not a problem. The complementary stylish bibs thankfully saved my date's appropriately chosen white t-shirt 😂 Washing our meal down Kakubin highball, I couldn't fault our night. Attentive and professional service, and a smooth experience for such a new establishment left a good impression. Much more of a special evening out than our regular ramen nights, I'm looking forward to going back!

The broth is beautiful. Furnishings lovely and staff polite. Nice open space where the focus is on the food. Loved the fried eggplant. The crackling pork roll wasn’t as crackling as it’s supposed to be. Overall pretty enjoyable lunch. One of the better ramen joints in Sydney.

The place was packed on a Saturday but they have heaps of seating so turnover seemed pretty quick. Service was quick, hassle free and the waitress answered our questions patiently.<br/><br/>Tried their Kogashi Miso Ramen and I was impressed with how strong the charred flavour was and it was certainly quite tasty. For those who aren't a fan of heavy soups though, this wouldn't be for you. And for $18, it's not cheap but I would say the uniqueness of the soup base is worth the extra few dollars. <br/><br/>I can't say the same for their King Prawn Guacamole - for $17 it was very overpriced for what you get. There were probably like 3 cut up prawns in the guacamole max, and it's basically the price of a whole bowl of their ramen! I would even prefer if they just used normal prawns instead and lowered the price since it's not like the fact that it was king prawns made much of a difference. Guacamole itself was well seasoned and tasted great with the crackers.<br/><br/>Also got their redbean taiyaki, and for $10, it was acceptable but I wouldn't get it again. The Sobacha sorbet on the side however was delicious! Would recommend just getting the sorbet for $5 :)

Stand out dish was the beef tataki. Also really enjoyed the pork buns. The fried chicken was a little on the dry side and the burnt miso ramen was too salty for my liking (I really wanted to enjoy it). Would recommend trying their burnt ramen at least once as it is very unique :)
