Review Sherpa Kitchen - Sydney

Holly Corpe
We booked on Dimmi because this gave us a 30% discount. This discount gave the meal value for money. Overall, the meal expensive for what was delivered. The goat curry meal set was minimal on the goat. Lots of bones and not much meat. The prawn vindaloo wasn't spicy at all. It was more like a butter sauce rather than a thick vindaloo paste. The Momo dumplings were the highlight of the meal. The spicy tomato sauce that came with the dish was great too. The service was ok, but the dumplings came about thirty minutes after everything else. They were supposed to be the appetizer. The momo is very good though. If you're here already order those.

A wonderful little eatery near The University of Sydney. Their Chicken Biryani is among the absolute best in the city!! A particularly affordable place for lunch!!

Excellent , entree size is big Authentic Nepalese restaurant, worth a try

Completely disgusting food. No way am I ordering from here again. 2 hours for the food to be delivered on a Tuesday night and the food was very cold. It was also very expensive. Fish gravy was $19 and it was half of a take - away container, whilst being too salty. The pistachio dessert was delivered in half a small container, and I paid $5 dollars for it. The only food that was up to scratch was the chicken biryani, but that was also cold. Don't recommend anyone to eat here, especially with a large group; friend or family.

Good little place, open late which is super convenient. Butter chicken is amazing, however super expensive. Almost $20 for a half full standard-sized takeaway container. The portions are too small for the price. Best to go for a treat rather than for a meal.

The butter chicken is out of this world but the kitchen works so slowly that you wait ages for the food. My husband tried the medium lamb curry and it was more like a stew. We do return for the butter chicken (a family favourite) and my husband has had other dishes successfully, but we try to go when we're not hungry yet!

Had an Uber delivered to the house . Dumplings was missing . Called them receptionist don’t seem to understand much English . And yes the curry was horrible like not even next to curry. I love Nepalese food cause I am one .. please do something about the quality of the food. That’s why people come back again . Hope to see the change . Well wisher .

I hate to do this as a Nepali but I have to. I was craving Nepali food so I went there super hungry and excited. The service was very slow. We had been sitting there for 20 mins waiting for someone to take our order and I had been waving my hand for 5 mins just to get their attention. The food took so long to come out. They first served momos which was barely warm and pretty bland tbh. Then we had to wait for another 10 mins for our mains and my friend had to ask them how long it would take. Finally, when the food arrived, it was just bad. The only thing that was edible was the chicken chilli. The thali and the chicken tikka were so disappointing and we just wanted to get out of there but not before paying an $80 bill for such dissatisfying food.

3.5. Good food with plenty of flavour and variety. The service was good but the wait was ridiculous. The waiter was friendly but couldn’t really answer some dietary questions we had which is quite a concern. We ordered entreé and mains separately, and for a night that wasn’t busy it was a joke that almost took an hour for the mains to come out and a half hour for the entreé.
Apart from that I do recommend the delicious traditional set and the unique north signature set with a complementing Nepalese beer. Lamb shank and lamb korma is also worth a try paired with naan.

We tried the veg thali and the Sherpa signature dish. The thali consisted on rice, a small portion of dal (gravied lentil ) stir fried portion of greens, one mixed vegetable portion(Sabzi) and chutney. The papad (fried lentil crisp) wasn't included in our plate while the menu states that it is a part of the meal. All the other tables received their thali's with the papad. Found it strange. We had to place an order separately and yet the mistake wasn't rectified.
The sherpa signature which is slow cooked goat was good. Its served with flat rice but I substituted mine for rice. The combo felt too dry for my taste but nevertheless it was yum. A lot of people order momos.. They looked pretty tempting, but was full with all the goat meat.

We came here because we were looking for a different cuisine to try out in Newtown, and with a 40% off deal the actual rating for this was [3.5] but without it, it would be [3]. The staff were lovely but the restaurant was super understaffed, and accidentally served a dish with less pieces, although they kindly accounted for this in the bill. We had the Garlic Prawns (tiger prawns sauteed with garlic and finished with a touch of tangy sauce $18.90) which was really tasty though (yum), and also the Nepalese Goat Curry (boneless diced goat slow-cooked in blended flavours of Cinnamon, tomato, coriander and bay leave $20.90) with rice, with garlic and herb naan ($4.50).

I mainly chose a Nepalese restaurant for the momo. Sherpa’s had thinner casing than I’m used to but the curried vegetables inside were great. The chicken and beaten rice was interesting although the goat briyani was a lot better. I suppose the servings are pretty small. The lunch specials seem good value but a couple that we ordered came with a free drink and I only realised later that we never got the drinks.

This was my first time having Nepalese food. The food definitely hits your taste buds, it's very rich and has so many great tasting herbs and spices. Great find in Newtown
Teresa
Good food, but small portions (you’ll probably need to order side rice). Their naan was very good, but the staff could have been more accommodating.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
After watching Jennifer Peedom’s amazing feature documentary Sherpa (2014) at the Sydney Film Festival, I approached Sherpa Kitchen in Newtown with more understanding. Rather than an occupational reference to people who carry things, Sherpa are an ethnic group living in the Himalayas, the mountainous region that spans Nepal, Tibet, India and Bhutan. This Newtown restaurant, located on busy King Street, showcases the Sherpa people's environment with a restaurant-length mural of snow-capped peaks. On the opposing orange wall you’ll find photographic scenes from Nepal, including colourful traditional clothing, and religious symbols running from prayer wheels to Buddha and the Hindu deity, Ganesh. Gold tablecloths and bright red chairs complete the restaurant’s bright and cheery look. Perhaps it’s these religious influences that mean you won’t find beef or lamb on the Sherpa Kitchen menu; though you won’t notice their absence with great goat to play with. Try it in the Sherpa Kitchen signature - Special Khasi Ko Taas ($15.99). This dish takes...

The food is simply divine. We were a bit hesitant due to the review. However we had a great experience. There’s the one waitress but she was simply efficient and friendly. Our overseas Singaporean guests were impressed with the food.

Sherpa Kitchen is a Nepalese restaurant located on King St in Newtown. It's been in Newtown for some time but the current owner has been there for about 18 months. Matt and I head here for a nice lunch. . There's gorgeous art work on the side of all things Nepalese that catch my eye. As it's a warm Saturday, I'm happy that there are a series of lunch specials. The lunch specials come with a choice of soft drink as well. I'm no expert in Nepalese cuisine but Matt is eager to try authentic Nepalese food.

Waited 1.5 hours for our main courses, we eventually just left. Not ok, half the restaurant was waiting too.

Food was good, but not worth waiting that long for.

4 of us went to this restaurant on a voucher so got to try a lot of dishes and I would say all were of a high standard. The momos are good as was the chicken sekuwa. Am not usually one for too much vegetarian but the pakoda was nice and not oily at all, and to finish the entrees we had an ordinary sounding dish called potato chop which was delicious. Loved the dosai. For main we had palak paneer (not my fave but nice enough), veggie korma - tasty, butter chicken - also tasty and the stand out being the goat. Nicest goat curry I've had with good tender meat and taste. Service was great but there were not a lot of customers and our girl was helpful with suggestions. Would like to go back and try other dishes also. This is a good place for people that don't like too spicy a meal and the ones that want some flavour.

I want sooooo badly to give this place a good review, but after our experience sadly I have to say it let me down big time.

We made a booking a week in advance for Valentines Day. We wanted to try something new and after seeing the menu online we thought we would give it a go.
When we arrived, we told the woman we had a booking and she started our order for takeaway. Eventually we got sat at a table.
We ordered some Nepalese beers that were really good, and eventually had another round.
The problem here was the amount of staff. We had to stop the same girl several times to order, ask for water, etc. We felt so bad for her because with the 20 tables in the restaurant she could only do so much.
We finally ordered and the wait began. The couple next to us had extreme patience and had asked for things several times with no help.
We ended up receiving garlic naan bread and my partners dish, which was goat. We wanted to try something different. The food was amazing. Both of us agreed everything we ate was really good.
Our booking was at 7pm. By the time 8:45pm rolled around and my dish and appetiser had yet to appear, we gave up.
We walked up to the counter to pay for the food we did receive and to thank the one girl walking around working like crazy. We even gave her extra cash because we felt so bad for her struggles. They needed more staff especially for a holiday! The other girls working just stood behind the counter and watched this young girl struggle!
I was really looking forward to the food I ordered considering the other food we got was so good, it just ruined the date because I left without even receiving a Valentines Day meal!
My partner felt horrible, and the experience overall was a let down.
We decided we may try again when it isn't a busy day, or try and get takeaway.

Loved this Nepalese/Indian restaurant. Tried their masala dosa and it reminded me of home! I don't think I can give a better compliment to an Indian restaurant :) Value for money

Always fabulous food for a relative cheap night out. We've dined here numerous times and it never disappoints. My only (small) let down was asking for extra hot chilli in all our food, and the dishes came out mildly spicy. More heat people!

Having said that, the flavours we're fab, the garlic naan a standout, and chilli meatballs a go-to dish.

Thank you!
Chris
Ate here again last night and service was slow. 1hr to get Nan breads and then another 30 minutes for meals.
Menu has also changed a lot with more Indian options and less Nepalese...this is a shame as there are already plenty of good inexpensive Indian restaurants in Newtown.

Best fish curry in town... also we Skippies love our butter chicken & this one is goood!!! Naans are also v good & try the momo dumplings for an entree.... byo for a great casual yummy meal ;)

A breath of fresh air in a suburb full of Thai, Japanese and Aussie food but the prices are a little dear. The food is not bad, flavourful and substantial; however, even eating vegetarian, it is does not seem nutritionally well balanced in terms of macronutrients and micronutrients and can be rather salty.

Food arrived slowly but surely, which was something of a theme during our time at this eatery. Staff slowly but surely arrived, provided we could actually catch their attention. For that reason alone, we are unlikely to revisit Sherpa Kitchen and would not encourage others to visit if they do not want to wait an eon to be seated, to order, to be served and to pay the bill; if you want a quick meal, Newtown is full of other, even respectable speedy dining options.

All having been said, we would recommend giving this Nepalese rarity a try, just to say that you've been here. Of course, your mileage may vary and you might very well like this (despite the service).

Delicious and fine nepalese food. I have been here about 10 times and I have never been disappointed. Food is simply delicious! Very fine and perfectly spiced, full of flavours! Rotis are excellent! I recommend the lamb saag and chicken curry. Very nice customer service as well. The best nepalese restaurant in Sydney so far! A great address for a romantic dinner or a dinner with friends.

The staff here are super friendly but it is extremely difficult to get their attention, ie. taking orders, water refills, asking for bill etc. It will take you multiple attempts to wave them over to your table and can get a little frustrating. If you come here during dinner time, expect to wait a while before your food arrives as it does get pretty busy here.

Sherpa Kitchen turns out to be pleasant enough but nothing to write home to the old country about. I am beginning to think that with a few notable exceptions, this is the best you can hope for from a King Street eatery. Still, we live in hope of finding another rare gem like Thai La-Ong.

Very tasty, full of spices and flavour. Highly recommend the 'Quanti Dal'. First timer here, taken by my friend who is a regular. We decided to go to this place 2 wks prior to our trip to Nepal (Kathmandu).
Started off with 'Singada', which are layered filo triangles filled with baby peas and mashed potato served with mint sauce.
Then we had the 'Quanti Dal' and 'Mushroom and Spinach' and papadums and rice.
We enjoyed all the dishes, especially the Quanti Dal, which is described as 'Red kidney beans and a mix of lentils gently simmered with garam masala...' was simply delicious with bursting flavours!

We ate vegetarian from starter to mains, but didn't even notice it was lacking meat as it was so full of flavour.
Definitely will be back after our trip to Kathmandu, and highly recommend to others!

Excellent and consistent. The staff are pleasant and try their best under busy and thus stressful conditions. If I haven’t made a booking I aim to arrive prior to 7:00 pm, past this time it becomes pretty busy most nights. This obviously increases the wait time for the food to be served.

The entrees are enjoyable, the stand-outs are the lamb chops, garlic prawns and the mo:mos (vegetarian). The menu offers a wide variety of tastes to suit everyone.

The curries are great; I have tried almost all of them. I've found that overall the chefs have devised a perfect blend of spices to produce an aromatic and delectable fare. If I was to recommend a couple of curries, it would be the fish curry, a slightly salty coconut based sauce with white fish. The second would be the quanti dahl, a mixed bean and lentil dahl with a tomato base.

I have been a patron of Sherpa Kitchen for about 4 years now (30+ visits in that period) and the restaurant has only disappointed me a few times a couple of years ago. They have since returned to the high quality that isn’t found in most Indian-esque establishments.

Love their butter chicken and goat curry. The chicken momo is also good

Superb Nepalese Cuisine. First time at the Sherpa Kitchen and it blew my socks off and left me to freeze my satisfied ass off on top of the peak of Everest.

The Starters were unreal, the chilli meatballs, chilli chicken and ginger chicken were soaked in flavour you wanted to lick of the serving bowl.

A fine selection of curries did not disappoint after the formidable starters. The selection of Roti and potato pancake were all equally sensational.

Highly recommended!

So-so food, slow offhand service.. My meal, Palak Paneer was ok when it eventually arrived 20 minutes after my pleasant entrée.

Unfortunately, I ended up having to share it with my wife who disliked her Thali so much that she sent it back to the kitchen having barely touched it, describing it as "cream, sugar and a bowl of rice".

The waitress was more interested in spruiking customers outside than serving the ones already Venus fly-trapped inside, waiting expectantly.
The food I was eventually served was alright; but the experience of eating at Sherpa Kitchen is not one I plan to repeat.

Very Pleasant. Attentive waitress, tasty and filling food. We particularly enjoyed the mushroom and spinach dish. The garlic roti was superb and I wished I had ordered two. BYO wine only. Decor a little better than other similar Newtown restaurants.

Ordered dinner here tonight and received confirmation that it will arrive within an hour and 10 mins, It's still not here. I called 20 mins after the ETA and was advised that it was arriving in 5-10 min.. Another 20 mins has passed and my order still hasn't arrived. I called again and was told it was going to be another 12 mins! I was explaining that I've been waiting over 40 mins and the girl on the phone just said "okay, it's on it's way. Bye!" Not even an apology or an explanation. I know the food is going to be good - but waiting for almost 2 hours for dinner, I'm way past my hunger now. Disappointing service.

No fermented yak butter anywhere to be seen. The food is delicious - especially the Chinese-Indian kind of fusion dishes - though the mono dumplings lacked their usual sparky chilli sauce. Visit here cos it is good hearty food and well-priced.

What a lovely place this is! Stumbled upon it one night after catching a movie.
Absolutely loved every dish! Will definitely be back. Have raved to everyone I know!!
Meagan_s84
Amazing!. The staff here are SO friendly and everything was brought out quickly. The food was tasty - i'd never had Nepalese food before, but would describe it as a mild Indian cuisine. I will definitely be going back to this restaurant again.

Great Taste and Nice Atmosphere. I ordered chow chow chicken, which tasted like the mixture of Chinese and Indian-- sour and spicy. Not too bad.

Cheese roti was yum. The only thing I would not give a 5 stars is they don't serve a variety of Nepalese drinks and desserts on menu.

Long wait time. After walking in on a Saturday night we had to wait almost 45 minutes even for our order of momos (entree) and when reminding the wait staff twice the main meal eventually came to our table..

I would have to say it didn't blow me out of the water, the food was average.

I'd rate this a 5/10
Sydneyguyrojoe
Ummm..... ITs basically a indian restaurant when you look at the menu
IT wasnt too bad,but the portion size for the thali was a bit small. Food came out a little quicker than i expected. Prices are reasonable.
Nil issues using entertainment book
There wasnt enough here to impress me to come back though

Went on a deal voucher with my partner. We were brought all the way through to a dark back room away from everyone. It was so dark we had to take a candle from another table so we could see our menus. It took ages for anyone to take our order., and when the food came the goat was totally overcooked and flavorless. The waitress was lovely, but she forgot our order of roti bread until we had finished our meals so we sent it back. Very disappointed.

In and out like an untethered goat. This was very much on spec as Mrs P and I strolled busy King Street with an hour to eat before a Saturday night movie. Most of the popular spots were chockers so we chose Sherpa Kitchen on the basis it had a few empty tables. We came without alcohol so being licenced was a plus.

A quick read of the menu and our order was promptly taken, with requests for beer and wine by the glass. We started with Sherpa Chaat Suprise ($8.50), baby spinach leaves, diced potatoes, chickpeas with a slightly too sweet yogurt sauce.

Our mains were goat curry ($16.00) and a creamy spinach cottage cheese dish ($12.50) served with Basmati rice ($3) and a tasty garlic roti ($3.50). The food was fresh but a little bland, though enjoyable just the same.

Service was efficient and the bill came quickly when requested. Nothing to complain about here and I would happily come again.

Highly recommended. Great food and great prices. Can't wait to go back.

Sherpa kitchen best restaurant. We had very good time over there. the food was 10/10 with great hospitality. definetely recommended.
Newtown Tragic
The food is great, but. The food here is wonderful and we have taken friends here a few times, and eaten a few times ourselves.
But, you need to be prepared for lack of service in regards to alcohol. If you bring your own wine, you will enjoy the meal more as they do not regularly ask you if you want more drinks.
The food is what we go for, and its authentic and delicious. The prices are reasonable, so its best to order heaps of dishes and share.
Stu
We had dinner here on a Thursday night with friends and enjoyed a very relaxed, tasty meal. We had three dishes between four plus roti and rice, and two entrees to share which was plenty. And it only cost us $20 each! Bargain & lovely food.

Excellent. Went with friends last night for the first time. We will return!
Service exemplary, food splendid, atmosphere just right.
It is new on the street and we hope it prospers as they are trying hard

Like it, don't love it. I couldn't help but get excited when I noticed this recently-opened Nepalese eatery on King Street. The menu sounded promising enough, yet didn't totally satisfy when we paid them a visit. I know Nepalese food is basic no-fuss fare, Hell, I ate enough of it trekking to Everest base camp & bumming around Kathmandu.
The Maji ko Macha - fisherman style fish curry cooked with mustard seed was overcooked and the mustard seeds were virtually nonexistant. I think I saw three.
The Khasi ko Tarkari - house style aromatic goat curry was nice enough and incredibly rich.
The Crispy Pancake was exactly that, only on the edges, and mushy and uncooked in the centre. Ordinary.
Service is pleasant and friendly and if you BYO be prepared to pay $2.50 per person for corkage.
The overall experience was pleasant but wouldn't make me return any time soon. Being newly-opened, perhaps they were still settling in, but at this point I know of a better option on Crown Street.
