Review Lat-dior African Eatery - Sydney

Mark N. Ibrahim
Amazing and different flavors. They got a big menu with dishes very different from each other that got me wanting to go try every dish they have. I tried a few dishes so far and they were all perfect. Prices are quite reasonable. Host is very friendly.

I came to this restaurant with my family for our 12 year anniversary, It's amazing the food is super delicious. I was worried that my son won't like it ,he smashed it ....Service was great 👌🏾, the portions are good .we couldn't finish it we had to pack it. I will definitely recommend it...will be back for more.

Very understaffed. The owner look stressed out because of this. The food was nice, but the portion was a bit too small for the price. The owner keep asking us to order more because it wont be enough.

We went on a Tuesday night. There were 3 tables including us and the waiter managed to bring the wrong food twice. The meat was chewy and tasteless. It's as if the sauce was added to the meat at last minute I stead of being marinated in the sauce. The fried eggplant ok but not amazing. Everything seems to be mixed with "African spices" but tasted quite the same. Not worth it.

Great atmosphere, beautiful food, generous servings. The host was very charming and attentive. He made sure we were out in time for the the theatre. Price very good and the suggestion of the banquet menu was brilliant. We would definitely go again 😍

Really different cuisine with an unusual twist. Staff were really friendly and authentic African. The portion sizes were good, quality was fresh and prices were very reasonable. Parking can be quite difficult in peak times so would recommend public transport on a Friday/Saturday night. The decor is nothing to look at and the overall restaurant is not that nice, i would definitely come back. Dont let the look of this restaurant turn you off as the food was great! The restaurant only holds roughly 8 tables so it is quite small.

Truly great service, and delicious food. As we were a group of 5 and wanted to try variety of dishes, we were recommended a banquet which not only hit the spot for everyone, but was very reasonably priced. Will definitely visit again.

I enjoyed it a lot - service was standoffish but that's not a problem - they were polite and helpful with our food questions and the dishes were delicious. The couscous and bean sides were really really good and the main dishes are satisfying. I didn't know what 'African' food was before I went but now I know that I like it

It is amazing I forgot to take photos. Staff is friendly and the food satiate my south East Asian palate and it is comforting like coming home.

With an earthy woodish decor the food at is delightful and if you can’t decide the owner is happy to suggest a plethora of great dishes which just work together. Healthy and flavourful with spices and tastes you wouldn’t necessarily think of working together combine to make such great dishes. Can’t wait to go here again 😋

These people are hard to get a hold of for delivery. On my third attempt, I left the order open for 25 minutes and they eventually accepted it, then they took 40 minutes to dispatch (after they were apparently closed). The delivery driver got lost but that might not have been their fault. Anyway, the food was great - the special had undercooked green beans in a good celery sauce, but the sagua sagua had wonderful beef in spinach and spices and the tajine lamb - ordered mainly to get some couscous to put everything on - had tender lamb and a great flavour. Nothing heavily spiced but the flavours are great and the portions are pretty good too. Just expect traditional service levels.

We ordered the Yassa, Sossou Gourgiguan and the Lat Dior Delight. While the flavours are refreshingly different, the proteins in the dishes are quite dry. The Lat Dior Delight (green beans with a zesty green dressing) were delicious and crunchy and made a fantastic accompaniment. Overall portion size was a bit small though so make sure you order enough 🐼🥢

Great food and lots of variety too. I have tried most of the dishes and I've never been disappointed. Ideal for dine-in though takeaway is also an option.

We were eager to try this place out <br/>The menu looked nice it had a nice atmosphere (and cool wooden plates! heh)<br/>We did not have a booking so were asked to return in 15 minutes which was fine <br/>We came back and told we would have to wait a Bit more <br/>The person took our number said he would call us back so we left (we had our young daughter with us)<br/>We walked around and finally decided to eat somewhere else as the call never came<br/>We never heard back (about an hour or so later) which we thought was pretty rude (it's a small place and we stopped by twice - would be hard to forget !) <br/>Anyway the owner? Seemed a bit unpleasant and not very welcoming <br/><br/>
Jess
Really over cooked food and way to expensive for the portions and for what it was. We ordered the bread as a side assuming it was one serving as we were not informed whilst ordering, later to find they charged us for 2 servings. Very disappointed and will not return again.
Johnny
Tasty food and warm service. Nothing over the top but just the essentials. Fresh food prepared on the spot. Veg packs a punch with amazing spices - serving sizes could be larger. More vegetarian options wouldn't hurt either, but that's personal preference. Something to try as an alternative to pub food
Liam
GREAT vegetarian options. Friendly staff. LOVE the bowls & plates - they're all wooden. Also noticed they have a fish meal (forgot the name) which translates to HOMOSEXUAL 👬

Had lunch here with my partner today and we both loved it. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and the food was just delicious, the Lamb Tagine was to die for. Our two side salads the Watercress and Bean salads were simple but just delicious. We would both strongly recommend Lat Dior to everybody, especially if you have never eaten African food.

Love this place.  Simple, humble and friendly restaurant which serves great, hearty African food - stews, veggie dishes, lovely pancakey flatbreads all with a different twist.  Good place to eat pre-show as its near the Enmore Theatre.  Highly recommend. Good value too.

The food is nice but not worth what we paid for! The double servings are almost the same size as the single, 6 of us dined their, paid double the cost and in the end left hungry. Not the place I remember it to be, no service and no value at all. Find another African restaurant because you'll be disappointed with this one.

Service is terrible!!!. Ate here with my husband. We rang a day before to book and we were told we don't need to book we can just turn up even though my husband told them that we have a bahy in a pram. So the night we went for dinner there were 3 empty tables but couldn't squeeze our pram so we had to wait for the table with enough space (only 1 table). And yes I agree with the entry above the dark man whom I suppose is the owner is rude and the service was very terrible! Food are quite nice but I would never wonder why they don't do well because of their service. There were rwo tabkes who walked out after we sat down because their order took forever to arrive and they were so unhappy as they waited for so long. I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE!!

RUDE AND TERRIBLE. The service is absolutely shocking here. We are a really polite group, but the man serving (who I believe is the owner) was incredibly rude and stressed out, even though the restaurant was empty when we arrived.<br/><br/>First up, when ordering he insisted forcefully (before we'd even finished ordering) that we needed to order a minimum of $15 per person. No-one expects to pay less that $15pp when you go out for a group dinner, so his rudeness was unnecessary. <br/><br/>We didn't have enough plates or cutlery between us, and it was a real hassle for him to get us more. We were sharing cutlery for the first dish and passing plates between us taking turns to eat. Five dishes never arrived. We got a beef instead of a vegetarian dish and he was incredible irate when we let him know there was a mix up. The portions are quite small, and when we tried to order more food half way through, he refused to let us have more food and said he needed our table for other customers. We had been there for 45 minutes tops. We still had a bottle of wine open, so we said we'd like to finish it, and still he wouldn't serve us anymore food. He said "I like your money, but you have to leave!"<br/><br/>The bill had the 5 dishes we never received on it, and he yelled at us again when we asked him to take us through the bill because we hadn't had all of it. He told us coming in with 8 people is ridiculous and next time we should come in with just 2 or 4 people. He probably shouldn't sit 8 people if he or the kitchen can't handle it. On the way out, our friend told him that the food was really lovely and that she was sorry about the big group - he told her to get out and said we were a "nightmare" for him. <br/><br/>The rudest dining experience of my life. We paid $25 each and had to go and get a second dinner. I would tell anyone to stay away from this restaurant.

After buying a voucher for this place, it quickly hit me that I've been here ages ago... and I was disappointed. I remember finding the food bland. Alas, I've committed myself so off to Newtown we go. We rocked up with no booking and the place (which is quite tiny) was almost completely packed on a Sunday night. The layout meant when the restaurant was packed, you will most likley be squished into tables that are packed closely together. Our Groupon deal allowed us two side dishes, two mains, bread, rice and cous cous and two drinks. My wife chose Batansey - fried eggplant served with a mildly spiced tomato and onion sauce. The sauce and warm eggplant just melted in your mouth and was fantastic as a dip for the bread. I chose Lat Dior's Delight - green beans served with a blended celery sauce. This was our favourite of the night. So simple but such an explosion of freshness (just as their menu described). The beans are dull and bland but the celery sauce is sharp, fresh and tangy.. and when combined.. it was just fantastic. My wife loved the side dish of bread. It was slightly warm and worked well with the sides. The main my wife chose was the Sossou Gorgiguan which is fresh boneless fish, steamed with some mild African spices like netetou and some tamarind. The word gorgiguan in Wolof literally means homosexual... which markets as an interesting dish name. The fish was slightly dry to my liking and the serving size is quite small. I ended up choosing Varenga which is a mouth watering dish from Madagascar consisting of cubed beef marinated overnight with African spices, slightly fried and then steamed in the marinated sauce. The texture of the beef was the downfall of the dish for me. It's quite dry and jerky textured in a way... Two small sides of cous cous and white rice.... The drink choices consisted of coke or ginger beer. We both opted for the ginger drink just out of curiosity. The ginger flavour was quite potent but worked well with the meal. My biggest grip

Surprisingly Tasty & Interesting Dishes!. We've tried a couple of African restaurants previously and found the food to be quite bland and boring... but the meals at Lat-Dior were tasty, interesting and had the feel of good quality home cooking. We had a couple of different dishes and really liked them all, so the diners writing the bad reviews must have just gone on a bad day? Anyway, the waiter, who we assume was also the owner, was very polite, humble and friendly. It was also really nice to see that the lady cooking in the kitchen was in colourful traditional African costume. An all round great experience, which is why I'm writing this review!

Hey its an african eatery on enmore. Been years since we’ve had african with the closing of Kilimanjaro on King street, so we kind of decided to eat here. A look at them from the street Look what’s across the road – a) doughbox diner b) the soon to be new place by the porteno boys. Inside, the decor is minimal – orange paint, some portraits This little note about it being the parent to Kilimanjaro is why we ended up eating here. A look at their menu. One thing to note is that prices on the main – your curry/main has no grains element and you will need to order a side – the couscous and rice are both $2.50 meaning the mains area really about $16. With a side? That’s $22. tuna (top left), chicken in the pale sauce and the lamb  – a side of couscous – all served in wooden bowls. The curries are sort of watery. The chicken and lamb were decent – the way the food is served is ideal for sharing. I would eat both the lamb and the chicken. Tuna. This was a highly questionable dish – it was sme

I've been wanting to go to Lat Dior in Enmore for months. Literally months! African is something that I would very rarely eat simply as you don't find too many African restaurants in Sydney (and I don't think there are any in the Parramatta area). I've ha

It's strange that we have rarely eaten at Lat Dior in the years it has been open. It's just down the road and the food is delicious.

Terrible service! Disgusting. Can't believe they would allow this In newtown.

Deliciously different and a lovely experience with tasty food I would recommend this place to anyone! Try the beef varenga!!

AMAZING!. This is absolutely one the best restaurants in the greater Sydney, unpretentious and authentic african food. The meals are filling, healthy, and not too harsh on the pocket! I would highly recommend this place.

I can't believe there are so many negative reviews for this gorgeous place! I eat there with friends every month or so and have loved every dish I have tried (which is pretty much all of them!) and found it to be very good value. The service may not be gushing but I've never had a problem with that. It's always the same gentleman waiting tables and he's lovely. <br/>The restaurant seems to have closed down this month which is very disappointing, as it made such a change to have something different to the usual Thai / Indian / Turkish. I really hope the closure is temporary so more people will get a chance to try this fab little place.

Per the review above. We came here. ordered a few dishes (uploaded pics). The tuna dish didn't taste like tuna and it was really fishy and offputting. Tasted like it had gone off and the smell pervaded the sauce. It was my mate's dish and he said it was good - but good fish don't smell like that. Otherwise, my dishes were decent but I prefer indian curries to this. service was also lacking - we asked for water - guy said yes but never came back with it.

NEVER AGAIN. Our experience tonight at this restaurant has finally motivated me to post a review instead of just reading them to guide us in restaurant choice. I will NEVER EVER go back there again.<br/>We ordered a few dishes that we have ordered in the past and are familiar with. We ordered the lamb tagine and the Sissou something or other fish AKA “homosexual fish”. We’ve had the fish dish on many previous occasions and have liked it, although the lack of ambience and slow service have kept us from frequenting the restaurant more often. The lamb tagine was fine. We had finished it and the staff were all standing around. There didn’t seem to be anyone cooking so we enquired about where our fish and the couscous were, and we were told it was coming, and they served it quite quickly afterwards. It didn’t taste like we had previously – the sauce was different – as well as the tuna was not tuna, but something closer to flake. We ate it all because we were hungry, however we felt rather disappointed with the dish. When the waiter came to the table to clear, we asked him what the fish was and mentioned the dish was different to what we’d had before. My partner asked him to find out from the kitchen. He didn’t come back. The manager then continued to clear our table twice and said nothing to us, which I don’t think is the right thing to do. When my partner then enquired of the waiter to whom we made the original enquiry, he said to talk to the manager. The manager came to our table, and my partner said to him that he didn’t think the fish used was tuna, and that when you say you have “tuna” on the menu, you need to advise your customers when you’re not serving tuna. The manager said tuna is seasonal, and they can’t tell all customers that it’s changed when it happens. Then my partner suggested it should be written on the menu that tuna is seasonal, so we know we may not be getting the tuna. My partner also said that the dish didn’t taste as we’d had it before and tasted more like something they’d put together quickly as opposed to something that had taken some time for the flavours to come together. The manager denied that. Then a man at another table commented rather loudly to the manager, that we were “whingeing”. When my partner turned around and said to him calmly it was none of his business, the guy from the other table said that we shouldn’t come here if we don’t like the food, and that the manager is a good guy and we shouldn’t be complaining. My partner said it was none of his business. The other guy then took his glasses off and indicated he wanted to fight him. What a ridiculous situation that we cannot give honest feedback at a restaurant which we’ve frequented on many occasions previously, and also that some thug feels it his place to try and defend it verbally and physically! From there it escalated. I said to the other guy we weren’t making a comment as to whether the owner was good or not, it was absolutely none of his business, and that we are allowed to give feedback if we so desire. This guy told us to go and not come here again. I told him to mind his own business. He kept going on and on. The owner then came to us and said to me that we called him a “devil-man”. That word isn’t even in my vocabulary as it’s got nothing to do with anything. The interrupter then said we had no right to make a complaint which everyone in the restaurant can hear. That was a ridiculous comment as we’ve every right to give feedback if we’re not happy with something, and we were talking in a calm manner to the manager, not him. It’s not our problem if he and his friend were listening to what we were saying. I’m sure too that him taking his glasses off and looking ready to fight would have attracted a lot more attention than us giving feedback to the manager. I’ve been to many restaurants, where we have been told that they’ve run out of something or it’s not on the menu that day for whatever reason, or it’s written on the menu that something is seasonal. That is fine, but I don’t think it’s cool to try and pass something off as something written on the menu. And what was this thug’s problem? I felt I was in some dictatorial country with the army or secret police watching, not the inner west where feedback is generally welcomed! I ended up getting so frustrated that I told the interrupter F*U* or something such loudly (not usually in my character), because I realised he had some huge chip on his shoulder and nothing was going to get through to him other than violence. I verbally made quite a scene in this restaurant towards the thug, because we had our democratic right to voice an opinion in a decent manner, taken away from us. The owner too was deeply disappointing in the way he handled the situation. He should have told his “friend” to calm down yet he seemed to enjoy the support. What has happened to my inner west, a place I was once very proud of, that we can’t give feedback without abuse! I will never go back here again!

YUM. Absolutely amazing food, extremely happy with this restaurant. Something different other than the usual Thai or Vietnamese which seems to be a common choice. Food was priced reasonably and delicious. Definately recommended.

Had the ndambe lamb and the batansey (brinjal)<br/>Both dishes were good!<br/>Unfortunately lack staffing and just one man was hosting, taking order and making the drinks. Hence service was quite slow and unattentive. <br/>Worth trying tho, if you have time to kill.

Love this place!. The food is rich and flavoursome, the menu is charmingly enthusiastic and everything is super super good value. We're talking dinnertime mains at around the $11 mark. Do be sure to try the steamed greens, quite delicious!

Used to love getting a quick takeaway dish here that was clean and healthy.

Great Food. For $60 we had 4 x side serves (gotta have the sides they are delicious and cheap $6 a pop), 2 x mains @ $10 to $15(chicken yassa = yummo), rice and drinks. The serves are small but this means you can order more dishes, there was more food than we (2 of us) could eat. The food is fresh and tasty but not heavy on the palette, nor is it over powering with spices. The service was friendly and quick for a Saturday night.

My Favourite Restaurant!. I love this restaurant. My friend and I had decided we would go on a culinary adventure to go out each week and sample a new cuisine. However, our adventure was stopped short with this restaurant. After the first time we went there- we just couldn't find anywhere else that we wanted to go more. <br/>So we end up always going to this restaurant.<br/>Since then, whenever I am taking someone out- this is where we go!<br/>The food is amazing! Just the right mix of tasty without being too spicy! I find the serving sizes absolutely fine- I always leave feeling pleasantly full. Best of all! I always find the restaurant so cheap! Without fail- every time I order I am pleasantly surprised when I receive the bill.<br/>After trying pretty much everything on the menu, I would recommend the Yassa and Sagua Sagua as the best dishes - they are sensational!<br/>If I was going to have any criticism at all- a wider variety of soft drinks on the menu would be nice (The ginger drink is a bit strong for my liking) -however I usually just getting tap water, which they do serve now.<br/>Also the rice servings are usually not enough. I always order 3 serves of rice for 2 people.<br/>Beside these small things- this restaurant is perfect in every way!
WW
Went there tonight, there were 10 of us and we all had terrible experience. The food was ok but overly priced - for a dish with less than 5 small pieces of chicken meat we were charged $13.50! Not just that dish, other ones were pretty much the same! More awfully - the service was appalling! We were told off for not ordering enough food! (10 of us, we each ordered a main, a bread/rice and a traditional drink, that's not enough???) <br/><br/>None of us will go back there again for sure, and we all post this terrible experience on FB to warn our friends.

Delicious. We went here last night with a group of 6. We called only 30 minutes beforehand and the table had been arranged once we arrived. We were a little circumspect, as we had eaten at their Newtown restaurant 3 years prior, and had such a bland and tasteless experience. However, we ordered the banquet which was recommended for a large group, and left ourselves in the hands of our friendly waiter. The food was magnificent. They did bring out some side dishes first, cucumber salad, and various herby greens, although these were eaten with the soft african flatbread as a starter. The meals then started arriving, first lentils and vegetable dishes to cater for our vegetarian diner, the eggplant was sensational, then the succulent whole marinated chicken with a spicy horseradish sauce we couldn't get enough of. The remaining dishes were balanced with vegetarian items, rice and couscous were also included. We had a range of juicy meat dishes, including lamb, beef, more chcken and delicious prawns. <br/>I counted over 8 mains and innumerable side dishes. Excellent value and even with 6 hungry mouths to feed, we couldn't finish the lot. The fragrant Bissap and ginger drink were very tasty and we were able to BYO.<br/>The service, although friendly, was a bit touch and go. We needed to order additional drinks twice, and water only came when requested.<br/>All in all, a great place to eat out with the family. Good value, casual atmosphere and amazing food.<br/>We will definitely return. This place may also become our home delivery regular.

Terrible service, ok food. Went for dinner before a show, the food took 45 minutes before we had anything on the table.. the fook was ok but the waiters were very stressed and rushed. Wouldn't go back.

Nice dining. This is a nice little restaurant with friendly staff. I can deal with the wait when it is busy, but unfortunately the side dishes were delivered apart from the main, as if they were entrees, which makes it just too tempting to just eat them beforehand. <br/><br/>Our friend, who is a regular, ensured us, however, that this does not happen all the time. <br/><br/>The mains were pretty basic beans, lentils, pumpkin, etc. There was some spicing, but not interesting enough to dwell on this here. The couscous was a bit of a revelation to me, because I always thought of it as a bland and dry belly filler, but now I learnt that it can be soft and tasty. <br/><br/>The drinks are interesting and refreshing. I guess I could give you a fairer description of the food if I were a meat eater, because most of the dishes are on the meaty side with a few vegetarian options. Nothing wrong with this place, really.
VeggieLover
Disappointed with home delivery. We ordered home delivery - the lady who took the order was pleasant and the food came in great time. The problem were the serving sizes - in particular the vegetarian couscous ($11 when delivered).<br/><br/>It was described on the menu as "Vegetables steamed with a tasty and mild African sauce, served on a bed of couscous grain with chickpeas, vegetables, etc.". <br/><br/>It was like a thin vegetable soup. It literally came with one piece of cauliflower, one small piece of pumpkin, and less than 1 tablespoon of chickpeas - I had to run a fork through it to try and find the few solid things. The couscous came in a separate small container. <br/><br/>I just thought it was appalling value for money (I wouldn't have paid $5 for that to be honest), and I would have complained except I was at someone else's house and they didn't want the trouble.
Lulu
Pretty tasty food, but beware... Our waiter took the liberty of ordering us extra dishes without asking and we ended up paying double what we expected.
Vegan Foodie
Yum yum!. Wow! What a great place, the food is fresh and very tasty and have lots of vegan options. They also have carb free options as well. Will definitely be back.

Sydney's best African. African food has not yet taken off in Sydney but Lat-Dior is one of those places that keeps you coming back. The food is good, the service is friendly and helpful and the prices are affordable. Particular highlights were the African flat bread ($2), which resembles a French crepe but appears to be made from different ingredients. The main courses are all good, although after the novelty of the cuisine wears off, the flavours are not particularly special. The ginger drink ($2) is definitely recommended - very spicy yet very healthy.

Great home delivery option. Ordered home delivery from here and the food is fantastic. it arrived in around 25 minutes too which was awesome.<br/>One of the better home delivery options because it's not swimming in oil and there are a great variety of veggie side dishes. Will order from here again.

AWESOME!. Lat-Dior African restaurant is amazing. They have everything to suit all people's digestive preferences. We went there on Friday night with our midget friend Sammi (who was visiting us from Somalia and is only 4 feet tall), and he was delighted to see authentic, traditional African food on an Aussie menu. He said "The way the chef cooks the Deep-Fried Giraffe is just like the way my mother makes it in my home town of Darkaburka". Coming from a real African, that says a lot. I don't know much about African cuisine, but we enjoyed sharing the Two Short Ribs, and the Two-Pack Shakur, which is an African-American delicious combination. Try this restaurant, you will not be disappointed.

My boyfriend and I are vego and we love going here - the food has heaps of flavor without being over-spiced, there's lots of variety and it's super-cheap. Always walk out happy

Awesome! If your after something fresh and tasty this is the place. Best food i've had on ages.

Great Food. For a Tuesday night my Wife and I were surprised that it was so busy. This is one of our favourites. I had the Domoda which is a boneless chicken steamed with spices and a tomato sauce. My Wife had the Vegetarian Ndambe which consists of lentils, kidney beans and vegetables. We had the various sides of Sap-Sap, watercress salad, Bougana, Cucumberand spice, and our favourite Galabo which is shredded carrots. Try the Bissap an African Flower drink it is fanastic, don't give it to the kids as I suspect it may be like red cordial.

Either very bad or very good. I have been eating at this restaurant for a long time ordering the same dishes. They always vary in quality. I have forgiven the bad because the good is so good. But tonight was the last straw. The tuna was mostly an inedible disgusting tasting lump of off blobby FAT and dark meat. I politely complained saying I didn't want to pay for the dish and the man was gracious. But the woman was highly argumentative and embarassing. Never again.
Stu
Tasty food here but I just can't stand the fact that they don't serve tap water (which I'm not sure is legal) - it's just rude and leaves a bad taste. If they fixed this (such a simple thing!) then I'd recommend it as a variation from all the Thai and Italian.

This African eatery is as petite as its sibling down the road, Le Kilimanjaro. Leaving our 'bland feeling' behind from our last African experience at that place at 501 King Street, we gave this one a go. It was a much better experience. <br/>The restaurant itself is a bit clinical in feeling and it only has about seven tables. Meals are served in wooden bowls and are fairly decent in size, and there seems to be a pattern throughout the menu - steamed meat and exclamation points! <br/>The selection of dishes we order include : Guinar BBQ Chicken, Ndambe Lamb, sides of Mboum (crunchy spinach), cous cous, Batansey (eggplant), African Flat Bread and Fataya Lamb (boiled seasoned meat in pastry). All of this was enough for two and most of it was delicious. I wasn't really taken by the fataya and my favourite was the Batansey. Where the sauce lacked in spice, the eggplant made up in creamy smokey goodness. <br/>Lat-Dior is nothing to scream and rave about but it has satisfying and humble food with warm and friendly service.
