Review Matteo Downtown - Sydney

A most enjoyable evening. Greeted with friendly smiles and had the pleasure of eating delicious fresh Italian food. Every dish we selected was cooked to perfection. The bread and bread sticks are freshly made on site. I will definitely go back.

Matteo’s is a wonder Italian spot located in downtown Sydney. It’s the perfect spot for an after work cocktail or business dinner as the place is in the heart of CBD. Great laid back, relaxed, and upscale vibe. The restaurant is quite busy so a reservation is highly recommended. When we sat down it took us a while to be serviced, but once our waiter came over she was very attentive and the food came out rather quickly. We ordered the calamari, which was perfectly fried and crispy while still melts in your mouth; focaccia bread, absolutely divine; oysters, served with a delicious sherry wine vinegar; gnocchi, it okay okay it tasted a bit like Chef Boyardee; risotto, which was perfectly cooked but lacked flavor; and the whole fish of the day, which was a pink snapper with a fresh hint of lime that pulled out the flavors. Overall the food was good, the flavor on the pasta dishes was lacking but everything else was great. Good Italian restaurant, but not great.

I wanted to love it but i just didn’t. The restaurant is extremely beautiful and the atmosphere is great too however the food was expensive and underwhelming for the price. It was extremely under seasoned and it just didn’t have much flavour, the things i liked the most were the cocktails and oysters…

Very nice pasta and drinks. My squid ink risotto was superb. The atmosphere is high class and the prices on the menu are more than fair for the location as well as quality of the service, food and drinks.

Atmosphere was incredible really hip, trendy and with the times. Food was simple Italian food but done well ! And finally a Italian restaurant that uses guanciale and the proper methods to make a traditional carbonara.

Food was delicious, atmosphere was great and the staff were super friendly. Went there with a group of friends on a Thursday night for dinner and again just for some specially created cocktails and yummy pizza. Especially loved the Gnocchi dish and the desserts, Basil Lime ice cream and the Tiramisu even impressed my Italian friends. Would definitely recommend and will go again.

The sizes of pizza were pretty decent and ingredients fresh. Keep in mind it doesn’t state on the main website but you need to confirm in advanced when you reserve a table that you would like the set menu. They’re unable to offer the set menu when it comes to ordering. The downtown negroni aperitif was really nice (just bitter and dry enough) to start the meal. Overall not a bad place at all

The venue was buzzing when we went in for a Thursday lunch and man was it good! We had a selection of dishes that we shared which worked well and that way you get to taste everything, which I recommend because it is melt in your mouth delish! Stand out dishes for me were the Octopus croquettes (YUM!) 😋 and Italian Pie. Wowow. That “pie” was filled with so many delicious ingredients I went back for seconds. Staff were attentive and sweet. Thanks team! 😍 will definitely be coming back for a visit next time I’m in Sydney.
