Review Hot Star Large Fried Chicken - Sydney

Dont ever go here, a worker who looked like he was high on weed served me took 20 mins to get my order and 45 mins to get my one piece of chicken and 2 drinks. And the chicken wasnt even cooked properly sloppy skin. Im surprised i didnt throw it in their face

Massive fan of Hot Star Fried chicken shops and we’re always on the lookout for them. We have been to this shop at least 6 times over the past year and been happy. Sadly the last two visits have been very disappointing and this store is now removed from our list of places worth returning to. A few weeks back I went and the order took ages, then when the guy handed it over it was wrong so I had to wait longer. Then the lady gave the order and straight away I said ‘there’s no chicken in this popcorn chicken’, the lady insisted it was all good and as I was so frustrated after the long wait I took it and left. Two more bites later and the whole bag was in the bin, she had given us the scraps of fried batter leftover in the fryer. Terrible experience and annoyed at myself for taking such rubbish. Decided yesterday to give them one more chance as it used to be so good. This time the batter on both pieces of the original fried chicken were an undercooked sloppy mess and again they ended up in the bin. Not wasting time or money here again.

Dreadful! I ordered crispy chicken. but not crispy is soft and undercooked. see have blood. and service attitude very bad. That waitress used her hand secretly turned fried chicken put on pepper salt. she didn’t wear gloves. OMG It tastes horrible. Not authentic Taiwanese fried chicken.

I dunno what everyone is raving on about. The chicken tasted very strongly of baking soda and it was too salty, the seasoning wasn’t very well balanced. Also why would you use a fillet of chicken breast and leave the bones in? Don’t get me wrong, I love meat on the bone, but not when it’s filleted and you’re supposed to be able to eat it on the go. Tried it, no need to go back.

Ordered delivery (fried chicken, tofu, and squid) from Menulog. They didn’t update their menu but Menulog called me saying they don’t have seafood today. I got a voucher in the end. 2 pieces of fried tofu costs 6.8! Only 2! If you pile them up, they are no bigger than your laptop mouse. And they were not seasoned at all… plain tofu + fried batter Fried chicken was alright. Not juicy and seasoned enough for me. Added salt and pepper by myself. The batter was too thick for me as well.🤔

Waited for almost 20 mins for only the fried chicken. There was a customer who came after me and ordered two chickens and two sides got their order first almost ten minutes earlier than me. The workers have no communication and teamwork with one another and cannot delegate work appropriately. They even complain about each other to the boss in front of their customers.

Its been long time not eat this chicken because the taste totally different not like before taste are so good. Today i try to get 2 chicken and that’s it i think no more this chicken, i think this is the last one i will eat this. Hopefully the owner will try to fix the flavour and put more staff so they can cook and prep properly.

Great service, great quality that is consistent with what you expect from the Hot Star brand. Highly recommend an original fried chicken if you haven’t had one already.

You can get massive and crispy fried chicken fillets for a pretty good price point here. Definitely go for the spicy option! The fried sweet potato here is really good too if you like the sweet-salty taste

There shop is a small outlet close to world tower in cbd. The chicken piece was large, I ordered it to be spicy. The taste was Ok, could have been better.

My favourite thing about this place is that they’re open until late. So if you’re ever hungry in town and want something filling and delicious - this is where to go. I bought the XL fried chicken and I was pleasantly surprised with how well seasoned it was. I was super full as well from the portion size.
Jim
Authentic Taiwan street food, tried their original fried chicken and crispy chicken bites, both were delicious and tasty, the original fried chicken is really huge piece of chicken with bones at the end, really tender and juicy too. There’s no dine in option, so you have to take it away or just eat it while standing on the street. Definitely worth a visit if you like fried chicken or street food.

Xihuahua 🐶 and I were drooling after this place for long time. Finally we get to buy it. They only had original chicken. It was seasoned with “🖐🏿 spice” which I wasn’t a big fan of. The chicken was fantastically juicy though. Made from real chicken, yes the bones are in there. I got burnt a bit by the hot juice shot out of it on my first bite. Be careful!
Dominic Svensson
The original fried chicken was worth the wait, tender chicken in a tasty crunchy batter (although the spice came mainly from a chilli powdering at the end), and it certainly is large. It's enough to put up with the dodgy shop - dirty all over, slow and surly staff, seemed to be out of many things on the menu, and they don't open at 10:30 like their website says (more like 11:30).
Tanya
Mmmm...hot star chicken is super yummy. I would only recommend coming here for their original hot star chicken and their deep fried mushrooms. These are really good when they are just freshly made. The chicken ribs on the other hand were plain and lacked any flavour (other than salt) - I would definitely not get this again.
Frankiieshungrytummy
Got the crispy chicken bites to see what all the fuss was about.
Unfortunately I wasn't that impressed.
Chicken was moist but the flavour was just like any other chicken bite you can get anywhere else.
Service was okay and so was the wait time but price didn't really match what you got.
Some Bunee Loves Food
These gigantic fried chicken is so flavourful and delicious. The bottom part was inedible as it was full of bones. Nevertheless it was a huge piece of chicken already. The chicken bites were great too in spicy flavour.

I've eaten here a lot in the past few years, and slowly their prices have increased as well. Great late night snack or light lunch. They have different seasonings and offer sides like fries.
Naomi Wu
I used to go here every week until I realized that it did affected my waistline a lot. The chicken is so flavorful and I love how juicy it is. I salivate every time I carry it home so I could eat it at home. It's a great street food and it's so large to boot! The price is so worth it.
Hayley
Always up for fried chicken! Came here during lunch time, it was quite busy, but there was only 1 staff. We got the original chicken and crispy chicken bites both spicy flavour. But because there was only 1 staff, he had to take about 4-5 orders before making them in one go, so we had to wait nearly 20minutes for our order to be served. The flavouring of the spices are delicious though.
Culinary Artist
This was originally from Taiwan, famous in the night market some ancient years back!
Tried this couple of time just revisiting them again.
What I heard was they bring all dried herbs and spices from Taiwan to re create the original taste.
Is it true? I don’t know, but this super large XXXL golden crumbed chicken breast is damn tasty.
Chilli and basil chicken bite also delish!
Chicken lover must try , little place but fired chicken was so tasty .it is a little corner shop ,but bases smell you will find shop ,love chicken ribs
Foodblogs
If you love chicken and don’t mind deep fried goodness :), this is the place for you. The (gigantic) original fried chicken is my favourite. I love the fact that it’s crispy but not too oily.
The queue can be pretty long during busy time but the waiting time is acceptable.

If you want a quick, hot, delicious meal which you can eat in one hand, Hot Star is the place for you.
Succulent, juicy fried chicken steaks that hits the spot every time. The sizes are quite large and goes very well with the fried eggplant or sweet potato fries. The best meal after a night of drinking.
Lauren Green
A shop that only sells fried food. Yes please! Chicken as big as your face? Of course! Open till after midnight? Definitely! This place fries up some of the juiciest chicken, with a variety of flavour options, plus all the deep fried sides your cholesterol clogged heart could hope for. The mushrooms are excellent, and the rest looks great. Do like the regulars do and have your plastic carry bag, provided at ordering, open and ready for the staff to place your piping hot chicken safely inside.
Zoe Bui
Woaa so delicious. I really like it😂😂😂
Must try. And i think the CBD outlet is better than some outlets..👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Worth the moeny!!!!!
Juicy and tender meat, crunchy outside, hot served!
So much better than some fried chicken shops who charge 25 for a plate of chicken!!!
Hot Star is probably one of the best fried chicken chain in Sydney. Taiwanese street food and night market snacks are very popular across Asia (since 10-15 years ago) and I am surprised Hot Star did not set up a branch in Sydney until a couple of years ago.

The large chicken breast/fillet cutlet is well marinated and is juicy, crispy and succulent. The right amount of tenderiser was added so that the chicken breast/fillet is tender but not "fake." Although the price ($8.70) is twice that of Singapore, thrice that of Malaysia and four times that of Taiwan, it remains one of the most affordable options here, considering some of the renowned chicken restaurants can charge four to five times more for a piece of over-fried, tasteless and dry chicken.
Eric Cheng
Best/favorite fried chicken in town. The fried chicken here is very juicy and full of flavors. Very cheap for huge piece of chicken and quick service. They also open until late.
Jade
I like it but once was enough. The first few bites are especially delicious, and quite addictive but by the time you have eaten half, you do start to feel a little sick. It's a huge piece of deep fried chicken so I would recommend sharing it with 2-3 people so you don't over indulge. The batter is light and crispy but it is very unhealthy.
TrufflePig
Hot star delicious.

As others describe, Hot Star is a fairly popular place. speed is on your side however, and customers are generally on their way fairly fast. I went for chicken, but I really must admit it is the sweet potato chips that will make me return. They are coated in this luscious tangy, sweet and salty mix of whatever - unlike anything I've had before. Think some freakish mix of roasted brown sugar sweet potato with a salty, savoury version - spectacular.

The chicken itself is hot, and crunchy, with the thickness to not take away from the goodies inside. The Spicy chicken seems to have a good mix of onion powder and celery salt, and the right amount of chili.
HangLaBong
Fried chicken can not get better and bigger than this. I tried the spicy version.. and it was awesome... Tasted the way it should.. The crust was crunchy and spicy and the chicken was tender, juicy and tasty. Highly recommended for gourmands like me, seriously their one piece of chicken can take care of your daily calorie intake
Renzo
If you don't like the taste of Chinese spices (e.g. those five spice powders) then Hot Star might not be for you. I'm not a big fan of the spice flavour but I love fried chicken, so they kind of balance each other out here! The chicken is nice and tender, they're freshly fried to order and it's gonna be hot, so be careful! I'm not a big fan of the sides, so I normally just go for the chicken.
Kerri
So excited to see this in Sydney after having it at a night market in Taiwan. The chicken was cooked just as good as it was in Taiwan. The spice was nice too but didn't cover the whole piece. Tried the fried mushroom too. Loved it as well. Couldn't finish my whole piece of chicken.
Andy Cheng
Been here many times for its evil food. The size of the chicken is huge and it tastes so much better with chilli. Add as much chilli as you can handle.
Up And Adam!
Hot star serves some of the best fried chicken around. I really like the original fried chicken. It is juicy, tender and so flavoursome and the servings are a good size. I will definitely be going back!
EatLiveEat
Go there when you are hungry, coz the chicken pieces are ginormous!! I have always tried the chilli version.. the heat packs a bit of punch, but at the same time is not super hot. The chicken is quite moist, and very flavorful. It is a cash only joint, and expect to stand in a queue in the evenings and on weekends.
Eyen.ellen
They don't cut the chicken (yes, I know... But if they cut it, it's more easy for us :) )
When I ask extra spicy, just only 1 side with chilly.....
Anyway... The taste still good, but I want more crispy!!
The price still ok for me
Actually 1 chicken like this 8$ something.... It's expensive but... What can I doooo?
FoodGloriousFood
The chicken from this place is finger-licking good. The original chicken is big and oh so crispy, juicy, and tasty.

I recommend the spicy original chicken ($8.50), and the chicken wings with the seaweed seasoning ($8.90/8 wings)!
@eatingupwiththehannashians
There is much better fried chicken in sydney. It is far too hot to eat when you first get it and then when it cools down it is all soggy! We like our fried chicken crispy!!
Andy Quan
Taiwanese Fried Chicken has come to Sydney! I’m not sure I even knew it existed, except that suddenly there appeared an intriguing shopfront on Liverpool Street, heading into the City that often had a line-up. I decided I had to try it. At $8.50, I thought it might be a small, manageable piece of chicken. My better half ordered the original, and I opted for the spicy version. What it is, apparently, is a large flattened chicken breast. It still has some bones in it (so you can tell it’s real chicken, maybe) and is crumbed and then deep-fried so it’s super-crispy. I have decided for 2016 that my food rule is to never eat something larger than my face (which means that the schnitzels at Una’s are out, sorry Una). This was huge, but smaller than my face, so I think I’m OK.
Food_Rampage_AM @INSTA
Gosh i am such a glutton today. After our lunch @yebisu, i trekked (yes it was a long trek 😜) to Hot Star Fried Chicken and got their original fried chicken for $8.50. Should have gotten 2..!! Nyum!! Would have been ideal if we were given the choice of breast or leg/thigh but i am nit-picking. Seems like they only serve breast meat though other reviewers have gotten thigh cuts? It doesn't matter, go have a try guys.

After hearing so many good things I finally got around to trying this place out. I got the spicy chicken schnitzel and thought it was great! I must admit I got pretty nervous when they gave me a bag before serving the chicken, but everything was so tasty. Will definitely go back again.
Ashley Xu
Chick snizzles that are bigger than your face. Crunchy, crispy and can be addictive too.
Too dangerous for people who need to watch out the calorie intake.
Grace Guo
Fast nice and easy to buy. Don't have to wait for too long, a good choice when you are hungry and you are around here and you want try something new. But the chili powder is not super good so don't add to much on the chicken😳
ThatFoodDude.
I never really understood what all the fuss was about. Sure, I like fried chicken, but what made Hot-Star so special? I ordered the spicy, and after studying the giant piece in front of me for a little while I opened my mouth and crunched my way through the crispy outer-crumb, straight to the moist, juicy meat inside. "Ah, now I get it". The chicken was actually that juicy it didn't even need sauce - and I love my sauce. No wonder it's Taiwan's number one fried chicken.
JaneV93
The food is good. But I've been here three times and I've been short changed twice... Not sure if it's because they can get busy or if it's something else but just be careful and look at your change
FoodieZealot
The fried chicken is juicy, tasty but but It's not a regular thing for me.At $8.50 I feel it's over priced. Also I don't have an appetite to finish off that big piece. If two friends are sharing then it makes more sense.if it was half the size and price it say around $3.50 then I could think of going again.
Featured Eats
Probably the most popular of the Taiwanese chicken outlets in Sydney, you will always find a queue out front. Although the chicken is good, the wait times can get a bit annoying as staff are often unable to deal with the large crowd, so I would suggest just heading down to 3Q.
Miss Deliziosa
Great fast taiwanese chicken fix! I've tried others and this is by far the best! Don't forget to try the mushrooms!! They are so damn tasty as well!
Kai Luv
Humungous. I got the spicy fried chicken and it was so big I couldn't finish it. The chicken was tasty but a little dry. If size is your thing you can't go past Hot Star. If you want juicy and tender, however, try Cheers Cut.
JADE
Ahh yes this is definitely the place to go for all chicken lovers. The chicken is larger than your face and cooked so that it is nice and crispy. Since there are still bones you know that its the real chciken. Plus it's only $8.50 and super delicious. The first time I got the original chicken and although it was delicious it was slightly lacking. Today I got the chilli topping and omg so delicious however I would recommend you have a drink ready. Also the service is very nice and efficent

I like the idea of Hot Star chicken more than the actual chicken itself. I like walking by & seeing everyone waiting on the footpath patiently holding their little plastic bags. If I get something it'll be the fried mushrooms or curly fries or nuggets.

They have different types of nuggets. The crispy ones are just pieces of breast meat, if you like your chicken nuggets recognisable and not mucked around with too much. The regular ones come with fried basil, can be darker meat & are nice in a different way, though they're not like just micro versions of the fillet since the coating & flavoring is different.

The chicken fillet itself - I totally get why people love it, and enjoy a little bit of it if someone else gets it, but the sheer size defeats me. I wish they did mini versions but I supposed there'd be no challenge then...
Aaron Luo
I'm going to start off by saying, I'm only here for the chicken. This place does a bomb chili fried chicken! The batter is not overly oily, the chicken is juicy, and it's HUGE! I love my chicken, so Hotstar really does it for me. I don't care about whatever fried mushrooms and sides they have, because the chicken is all I need.
Sharon
YUM YUM YUM! I was so excited when I heard that Taiwanese fried chicken was making a breakthrough in Sydney. Out of all the ones I have tried, Hot Star is definitely the best and most worth your money. I love that you eat it from a paper bag and that it is the size of your face. I don't mind getting a little messy as I think that's all part of the experience. Definitely would recommend!
Rachaeleatith
There's not many places you'd find a fried chicken the size of your face. This chicken is juicy as, and has an unbelievably crispy outer layer. The spicy salt on the outside is a perfect match for the juicy chicken.

Located on 96 Liverpool St, Sydney (opposite World Tower).

When we arrived which was just before there was not much of a queue so between ordering and waiting took around 7 minutes. Not bad!

Its a small shop front where you order your lovely chicken with the various range of spices as below:

Little Spicy

Medium Spicy

Spicy or

Extra Spicy

I got the Hungry combo and opted for the little spicy because that's all i could handle. Once you pay you get a receipt with your number and a small plastic bag. Once you receive your chicken you will understand why the plastic bag is needed :P

The chicken breast is massive! As seen in the picture it was twice the size of my hand. This is so boss! I also got the sweet potato fries which tasted really sweet, almost like they had sprinkled chocolate on it? How, Why? I don't know, this is definitely one to consult the 8 ball!

Delicious, easy, quick, (maybe not so healthy) dinner all for the bargain price of $10.90.

Worth a visit, if you are in the area. If not you must make it your life's mission to get there!
Bokeh
The chicken is quite tasty but value isn't great for $8.50 when all you get is chicken, which is probably about 1/3 batter. They are also quite slow to cook and can be waiting for over 10 minutes. Some of the staff also don't understand English very well so ordering can be frustrating. The food itself is pretty decent. The best thing on the menu is the mushrooms. The chicken has a nice flavour and good crunchy texture, although quite greasy. The "spicy" version is just covered chilli powder which I wouldn't recommend. They put far too much on which can get up your nose when you're eating.
Stella Haryanto
Hot star will never disappointed you especially for late night snacks. Lucky this outlet really close from my apartment! Great super large size fried chicken for $8.5. But my favorite is the mushroom and sweet potatoes $3.5, always order the super spicy if you like spicy foods. It's heaven for spicy lovers. Always a long queue everyday and they close at 2am it's nice

The boom of Taiwanese Fried Chicken happened fast… and one of the leaders of this movement is Hot Star. In fact when you visit their city branch you might be wondering if the chicken was free… judging by the amount of people just waiting outside… what just for chicken?? The Taiwanese chicken sensation is spreading as fast as the hype of the frozen yoghurt craze.. but I have a feeling this one will have a longer longevity. The fried chicken on offer is delicious… well cooked, juicy and subtle hints of cinnamon flavour. You should also give the fried mushrooms a try as well. It’s cooked perfectly everytime and wait … well in my opinion is worth it. Simple process here… choose what you want, pay.. and they’ll give you a bag… which you bring to the counter when your number is called out and they’ll plop your order inside the bag.

One of the sucessful story of importing Asian food to Australia in the form of fast-food outlets. Tried that after lunch at Din Tai Fung and walked out from the World Square. Friend of mine told me that it is one of the "hot stuff" in sydney lately. So...go for it. Well, idea adopts KFC with original and spicy but with hugh size of chicken breast. Taste is good and crunchy. Love to see the originated Taiwanese street-food is so successful in Australia but the menu is quite limited.

Tasty Product. The menu is indeed limited - chicken bites or the large piece meal versions. That day I chose the large piece of chicken breast, available in original and crispy. The young chap then asked for my preference of spiciness, low, medium or high. Having done that, he gave me a new plastic bag like a ration handout and then we customers waited. At Eastwood that day, it could have been hilarious - both sides, staff and customers, were just looking at each other whilst some frying and cooking were done behind sight. I quickly reckoned the plastic bag was an ingenious idea - apart from being used to hold the hot stuff, people could discern between those persons who had already ordered and those who had not, still not making up their minds.

The menu was laid out simply and visually in front of the counter. The staff did not converse much but went about their tasks fro most of the time. You collect when your number is called. The first thing I loved about the Hot Star chicken breast was its crumbed texture, yummy taste and flavourful chicken meat underneath. There was only bone at the end. There were no messy sauces, the product spoke for itself thus. It looks like a dream snack for international students and tourists on the go. I may have missed something - did they sell drinks?

Eastwood I understand was the only latest outlet in the greater Sydney region to join fellow branches in Cabramatta, Hurstville, Burwood and Liverpool Street Sydney CBD. Swanson and Elizabeth Streets in Melbourne CBD already have their own Hot Star stores. The model can be temptingly effective - sell only a few key items, all using mostly the same crumbed ingredients, with a cooking method that can be learnt up fast by employees and site the sales outlets in busy thoroughfare streets, especially those that are still lively at night. Hot Star has cleverly identified their key market and zoom down to them. Hot Star is sparing on spending too much on retail space.

The waiting and the anticipation at the Eastwood store of Hot Star. View it as an effective business model, or a yummy chicken recipe, and that is Hot Star. Already based in South-east Asia, it purports to have a Taiwanese crumbed recipe for mainly schnitzel-styled chicken on the go, although you can also order variations in snacks with curly fries, mushrooms and sweet potato. It has been operating in Australia for around a year. Its star performer on the menu literally is the rather chunky size of fried chicken slice, selling currently for AUD8.50 in the outlets in Brisbane Sunnybank, Adelaide Grote Street, Melbourne and Sydney areas. I have been curious about its sensational start for Aussie sites and also with mainly Asian background youth gathering around its Liverpool Street branch in downtown Sydney. I recently had an opportunity to try the chicken at its Eastwood store north-west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Domestic Violence. For only $7.90 you can feel guilty, ashamed and a little sick. Eating a pound of greasy goodness from Hot Star is similar to domestic violence. The initial lust and satisfaction eventually erodes into an abusive situation filled with regret and pain.

Deep fried Taiwanese chicken is all the rage. There'd be a small crowd huddling around their CBD store every time I walk past. Being health conscience is a growing trend, the amount of business this oily deep fried chain is bringing in is mind blowing. The fries, mushrooms and chicken are all stored in individually packed plastic bags, and yes, they do fry everything to order, so don't be surprised when you find yourself waiting in the cue for a minute or 10. Chicken Breast $7.9 Here we have an over sized piece of chicken breast, approximately $5-6. How they manage to get pieces of chicken breasts this big baffles me. The umami seasoning is quite addictive, chilli powder is optional. Be warned, "medium spicy" will burn your tongue. The chicken breast was tender, the batter was crunchy and it was quite delicious. More or less a heart attack on a plate. Nothing to complain about other than the fact that my chicken had little bits of bones and ribs along one side of the breast. Sweet Potato Fries $3.90 Deep Fried Mushrooms $4.9 Curly Fries $3.90 There's no need for me to review the above, anything deep fried will taste good - or roughly the same. If I'm not paying for quality, value and craftsmanship, then I'm paying for quantity. There's no real value, quality or craftsmanship in this, and as you can see, quantity is a real issue with these lot. Sauce is available for fries only, but if you demand sauce from the customer service rep, you'll be able to get sauce on your chicken. Worth returning Once in a blue moon. I personally don't like to eat a lot of deep fried food, so I probably won't be coming back for some time. Ratings 5/10

Worth a visit to see how the Taiwanese do fried chicken but not sure whether one would be a repeat customer. Personally prefer this chain over the more recently opened 3Q Chicken on George St but it won’t be the first place I’d think of if in search of a fried chicken fix.

As a proud Taiwanese, I am too familiar with the Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken . I had been waiting for it to come to Sydney ever since it first opened shop in Melbourne in 2013. When it finally came in early 2014, the usual greetings in our Taiwanese circle were immediately replaced by “Did you see/Have you tried/Did you like Hot-Star” —–HER{curio}MAJESTY SCORE SHEET —– Food : 9/10 || Service : 9/10. Like the original Hot-Star in the Shi-Lin night markets in Taiwan, it’s for takeaway only. Also, just like the Shi-Lin night markets, they would give you a plastic bag when you order, and when your number is called, you would then bring that plastic bag and naturally assist the guy in putting the deep-fried goodies into your plastic bag. Very clever and efficient.

WHY HELLO AGAIN! Sorry for the lack of posts this past month, I've just had a pretty hectic month which left me no time to eat out, but now that its over, I can restart my food frenzies and continue making food babies. Anyhow, onto this glorious piece of Taiwanese fried chicken, Hot Star. It is AMAZING! It was like love at first sight when I first tried this. Multiple chickens later, I am still in love with this place. Located on an almost hidden area of Liverpool St right next to Hungry Jacks lies this takeaway shop. It's not so hard to miss because of the amount of people waiting around the store/ Don't let the line scare you off though. It's definitely worth the wait. Let's start off with the obvious, the size of the original piece chicken. For only $7.90, you get this enormous piece of chicken. It is literally bigger than size of anyone's head. Watch out for the chicken bones nearing the bottom of your chicken piece. The chicken is cooked perfectly. Soft and tender. Oh and you can also choose the spiciness level of your chicken or go for no spices at all if you don't like chilli. I think I chose really spicy or something because I felt like dying trying to eat it, but it was still so so good. Despite the slight wait for your chicken, this place is a must try for everyone. I love it so much and would have every single day of my life if I had the stomach for it. Honestly, just try it ! It is so damn delicious.

Original Fried Chicken $7.90 Face sized fried chicken? Ok, I’m in. This small Taiwanese takeaway shop is tucked away on Liverpool Street in the Sydney CBD. And chances are you would have most likely seen or heard about their world famous oversized crispy fried chicken. The shop itself has a simple menu serving their famous Large Fried Chicken, chicken bites, sweet potato, mushrooms and curly fires only. Fast paced, no area to sit down and all food is ordered to eat on the go. Each piece of chicken is marinated in Hot Star’s secret sauce straight from Taiwan. Its then coated in tapioca flour and deep friend to a crispy brown. Soft on the inside and hot and crispy on the outside. You can get original or spicy! Their website states "No preservatives, no additives, not frozen chicken. Fried to order, always cooked fresh.” Overall, their meat is tender and moist. Generally busy, but the wait is not long. A great cheap eat.

...Teeth sinks in, crunch. I die at the crunch and relive because I can that way … but then the juicy tender inner chicken has me back at death of complete delicious-ness! To this day, my mind has been on this heart attack piece of chicken – and will be anticipating my next return!

Let the blue signage draw you in! Don’t hesitate, but maybe
grab a friend to share the chicken with you as you might have some
trouble finishing it on your own. If you love KFC, then definitely try
this. You will never look at KFC the same ever again, trust me.

As the name denotes it is large! Cooked well but the coating is a let down in my opinion.. And the spicy options should really be spicy, but it tasted sweet to me just with a hint of chilli powder.. Will try other sides like the mushroom and sweetpotato next time!

Fried Chicken = Awesome Greasy Goodness (F C = AGG). The last time I ordered the same old Chicken Schnitzel and Chips for around $9.50 from one of those generic lunch time carveries I thought that there had to be something better than this. Added gravy and excessive amounts of chicken salt can sometimes get me over this feeling, but not this time. That’s when I decided I needed to jump on the bandwagon and try Hot Star Large Fried Chicken.

Chicken the size of your face! That’s what the people say about Hot Star’s fried chicken. But was that the only thing that was special about this chicken? In the CBD with a hungry belly, I stopped by Hot Star. It was quick to order but a bit of a wait time to get your meal, as they make everything once ordered. I ordered myself the "Hungry Combo" which was $10.90, which for me meant a Spicy chicken and a side of fried mushrooms. The chicken was indeed the size of my face! The spiciness of the chilli version comes from the seasoning that they put over the original chicken and gives it a yummy, spicy look. The chilli did have a tinge of a kick but nothing too overwhelming. But once you get about half way through the chicken it gets a bit same same and I got over it. First look at the serving of the mushrooms, I was a little disappointed by the small serving. Especially when I tasted my first one and loved the salty, fried flavour. However, they were pretty greasy so the serving was more

Hello beautiful people! Following my post about fried chicken last week I decided to blog about a little food adventure I had in Melbourne recently! FEATURING FRIED CHICKEN! This was one of the BEST fried chicken I've ever had! Context: it was during a really cold, rainy night and we got hungry during the bar hopping so we decided to try out Hot Star and IT WAS WORTH IT! NO REGRETS! DAMN GIRL THIS CHICKEN! ♣ So on to the food... We just got the Original Fried Chicken ($8) and it was WORTH EVERY DOLLAR! First of all the size of the fried chicken really surprised me!! The size of the chicken was bigger than my face - I can't really imagine eating it by myself! So it was a little bit oily but the chicken was so moist and juicy! I loved it within the first bite! SO GOOD!! There were some bones in it but there wasn't many and by the time we reached the chicken we were so full! So happy eating chicken! IT's bigger than my face! The thing with Hot Star is there is usually a pretty long

I’ve always been told size doesn’t matter. That’s what I told my English teacher about my brain in year seven when she asked me to rewrite my article for the seventh time. That’s also what I told my ex-girlfriend after she made a snide remark about my lack of size. Hey man, I’m tall where I come from and you shouldn’t be wearing hooker heels. So yeah, I always believed size doesn’t matter. Then I went to Hot Star Large Fried Chicken in the CBD and realised that one of my life’s philosophies was a lie (just like how I thought I was good looking until I realised every photo ever taken of me involved an Instagram filter). Once again, I continue going to places three months after the initial storm. I’m like an anti-hipster. Hot Star Large Fried Chicken opened earlier in the year to much fanfare. It’s a hugely popular franchise overseas and I’m glad they flapped their wings over to Australian shores. Known for their deep fried offering

They just basic sell deep fried goodness and what we got just looked like a huge chicken schnitzel covered in some sort of chilli powder/spice which is what they're known for. It was indeed really tasty because of the super crispy outside coating and that punch from the spice. But t

A Friday evening after work and dinner, we decided to drop by Hot Star before heading home. It was probably 8-9pm at this point and there was an already huge queue outside either waiting to order or waiting for their orders. Opened earlier this year in March, Hot Star follows from its first franchise store in Melbourne. This Taiwanese sensation has taken over Sydney by storm, after all we love the latest and greatest. Each chicken breast fillet weight about 250 grams - that's a lot of protein! The chicken is firstly marinated for 24 hours in an aromatic mix, before coated in ta

Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is a fried chicken sensation, originating from the country of Taiwan, with beginnings from the ever so famous branch in the Shinlin Night Market in Taipei. It is classified more of a street food as there is no seating and you eat standing up or on the go. If you ever been to Taiwan, then you'll know probably know how popular the fried chicken from Hot Star is with lines upon lines of people wanting to grab hold of their famous oversize chicken. They are well known for their 'crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside' chicken breast. When I was in Taipei a few years ago, I did have the chance to visit the main branch in Shinlin Night Market. On the menu, there was only one thing and that was the large fried chicken that was as large or if not larger than one's head. Though my recollections of the night were rather faint, I do recall the line being long, filled with many tourists but it moved very

...Fried Chicken bigger than my face, it looks small in the picture but that is simply because it is folded slightly and I was eating on the go with no plate so unfortunately it wasn't feasible for me to take it out of its packaging for you to admire it in all its glory....

Very rarely in Sydney would I come across a 30cm in length fried chicken . With Sydney-siders increase of fried cravings over the years, Hot Star Large Fried Chicken ( 96 Liverpool Street, Sydney NSW 2000 ) has successfully opened its first store in the heart of the CBD . With epic queues all the way down the street, the sight of 250 grams of succulent chicken breast steak gets food lovers eye-twitching and it’s totally worth it. Hot star started their frying food scene back in Taiwan Shilin night Market in 1992 with one mouth-watering mission- “ To deliver authentic Taiwanese street food “. And let me just state I am certainly happy that chicken crossed the road...

Being a Taiwanese, my Asian friends shake their heads in disbelieve when I tell them I've never had Hot Star Fried Chicken before in my life. My excuse is that every times I visit Shilin night market in Taipei, having a large fried chicken isn't really something that crosses my mind. To me the whole point of going to night markets is to try as many different types of "small eats" as you can. Another reason is that Hot Star Fried Chicken seems to always have a long queue and ain't nobody got time for that. But now I can finally put all that behind me, because Hotstar Chicken is now in Sydney!

I visited Hot Star last week. After a busy opening, the lunchtime crowds have died down a little and there wasn’t a long wait. For my $7.90 I got a darn big piece of fried chicken breast, covered in crispy crumbs and moist and juicy on the inside. Hot Star chicken inside I started out strong and I did eventually finish it. The exterior has plenty of flavour. It doesn’t get boring fast. The chicken was hot the entire time I was eating. I found myself picking the last bit of chicken and crumbs off of the bones when I got to the end, but I spent the afternoon feeling overfed. I would recommend it as a snack shared between two, although if you’re bulking I guess it’s fun to switch up your chicken breast flavours! I recommend Hot Star for some delicious fried chicken. The fried chicken franchise that originates from Taiwan, Hot Star Large Fried Chicken (96 Liverpool Street, Sydney CBD) has landed in Sydney, albeit next to a really seedy thai massage place and around the corner from the icky, sticky Bar Century. A perfect location for fried chicken then, wouldn't you think? I have their marketing strategy all figured out (I'm not just a pretty face). What? Back to fried chicken. So Hot Star is renown for their face sized fried chicken schnitties (does have a bone though) although they do have other fried goodies on their menu such as chicken bites, fried shrooms and sweet potato. Check out that wrist protection Don't like that powerpoint so close to the fryer Conveniently Hot Star is open from 11am till 12am from Sunday - Thursday and 11am - 2am for the partygoers on a Friday/Saturday night. After our visit to the Local Taphouse with the boys and a quick pit stop at Messina, we decided to finish the evening off with some light, hearty supper at

Lastly, to really get into the Taiwanese style of this shop, my brother and I got two Asian boy-band promoted drinks, a green iced tea and a black iced tea – they were both pretty delicious, though if you are choosing one, the black iced tea wins hands down :D
Confessions Of A Glutton
The Original schnitzel ($7.90) was crispy on the outside, perfectly tender on the inside, not greasy-tasting at all, and luckily “little spicy” was just the right amount for me – enough to set my nose running, but not enough to have me panting for a glass of milk. Brother Bear was surprised at how hot little spicy was, and said that he didn’t even want to think about how intense “extreme spicy” would have been. And it does have bones, so do be careful towards the end of the packet.

Hot Star Fried Chicken has been open for a while now and has been well received by local Sydney food blogs. I’ve now tried the mushrooms, spicy large fried chicken, chicken bites and sweet potato fries and while I can definitely say I enjoyed them, this is a once in a few months type of thing (talk about calories!). The chicken was my favourite- super crunchy and I loved the spicy chilli salt that was put on top once it was fried....Will be back again!

OK this place is meant to be for chicken but we didn't want chicken did we???

Hot Star Fried Chicken is amazing value for money. Our sweet potato chips and original fried chicken cost only $10.90, and would only have been $11.90 if we chose to add a drink. The flavours of the chicken are dangerously addictive as well, and I think I’ll be back to try their smaller popcorn chicken bites.

For those who haven’t been to Taiwan to try their fried chicken that is as big as your face, now you can try it right here in Sydney! They are really popular, started off at one of the night markets in Taiwan, with long long lines…and extended over to some parts of Asia as well… They don’t have much on the menu…mostly just fried chicken, and some other random things like mushroom and sweet potato… You gotta try it, the seasoning is just right, and the chicken is fried instantly for you…not too oily… This is what happens: - Line up - Order at counter - They give you a plastic bag - Wait for your chicken to get fried - when you number is called, bring your plastic bag, and they will put the freshly fried chicken in a paper bag, and then straight into your plastic bag… I also tried their chicken bites as well, delish! You can choose your chilli seasoning to none to heaps! The only bad thing I would like to complain about this place is that…IT’S TOO

Along with the fried chicken we also had a few of their sides. The chicken bites ($5.9) are a small sample of the large fried chicken with hints of their seasoning and some addition of deep fried basil leaves.

If you’ve ever had fried chicken at Chefs Gallery or Din Tai Fung before you will notice that it’s quite similar apart from the size. It’s very crispy but retains a good amount of juice inside, this in combination with the chilli powder makes it a great tasting snack (or meal). Fried Mushrooms Apologies for the horrible focus on this picture, I believe Mr C was in a bit of a rush to eat because it looked so delicious that he forgot to check if it was focused properly. As a side order we decided to see if the fried mu

This fried chicken is generous, crunchy and sizzling hot. I love how true it is to the original version from Taiwan's markets with a spicy flavour that can be sprinkled on top.

You can find Hot Star Chicken right near World Square. Their menu is small and is made up of deep-fried items such as mushrooms, chicken bites, sweet potato and of course the omega chicken which comes in spicy or non-spicy. There is normally a queue but service is efficient as they fry batches of orders at a time. Just not welcoming when you have to stand around in the cold during winter!

Do you like chicken? Are you a foodie? Do you believe in everything that is fried? Are you addicted to foodporn on Instagram If you answered yes to all of the above, then SURELY you would know about Hot Star already. Touted as the new hot kid in town (literally), Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is making waves amongst food bloggers and fellow fried chicken lovers. Not sure what all the hype is about? Read on! To give you some background, Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is a famous snack that originated from Shih Lin Night Market in Taipei - since then it has opened so many franchises in various countries. In fact the first time I tried it was during my trip to Shanghai last year - M had loved the experience so much! Hence both of us were quite excited when I got invited to try out Hot Star at the Sydney store, which opened up one month ago near World Square (across from Hype). Turns out Sydney has embraced the hype wholeheartedly as well! I've been here a few times already and on each occa

The beef wellingtons were well seasoned and tender. The mustard jus had a good kick to it which gave the beef wellingtons a real good twist. The chicken tikka wings were really heart and fun to eat. Forget the knife and forks, the best part was picking them with their hands whilst it was sizzling hot, peeling off the meat and dunking it into some of that rich butter chicken sauce. Freaking.Delicious.

The chicken piece is supposed to be bigger than your hand - and it actually is that big! The large fried chicken was delicious. There's often a queue at Hot Star but it's well worth the short wait to grab some of their tasty treats!

The latest deep fried craze at the moment is Hot Star Fried chicken. Originally from the streets of Taiwan, this fast food outlet has now hit Sydney - Liverpool street to be exact. What used to be a small and simple Korean restaurant, has not turned in a fast food takeaway shop front serving deep fried chicken. The chicken breast is crumbed in a flour-y coating before behind deep fried. The chicken is cooked to order and so there may be a bit of a wait as you wait for them to cook your chicken. Apart from chicken they also have some mushrooms and sweet potato chips and a few other bits and pieces to try. On this occasion we just ordered the signature chicken with spicy flavouring (which is just sprinkled on top after the chicken is fried). My thoughts on the chicken: The good: The chicken is huge (around the size of my hand or slightly bigger), the chicken is fresh and piping hot, the chicken is moist and juicy, the crumb is crunchy and the spiciness was nice The

Apart from the super cheap prices, one of the main reasons for the long queues was that the shop actually began at the Shilin night market in Taipei in 1992 and has since expanded to more than 40 franchises across Taiwan. It's no surprise that they decided to make the trip down under and open a shop in Sydney and Melbourne for the Australian market to discover their popular street food. Got the chance to meet Hot Star Sydney's store manager, Cassey, who showed
Excuse Me Waiter
Hot Star’s Fried Chicken is the epitome of tasty Asian snack food and the huge crowd outside their small shop is already an indication of how Sydney has welcomed this new addition to the fast food scene in the city. My only words of advice are do not underestimate the size of the chicken pieces! I think 1 piece of chicken could easily feed 2 or 3 people for snacks and it’s best to save some room for their tasty sides too, rather than overdosing on fried chicken. Also the shop is takeaway only, so you’ll need to head over to Hyde Park or one of the many food courts in the Town Hall area to savour your fried chicken in peace.

The Original Fried Chicken ($7.90) is what people are lining up for here. Tasty crunchy crumbing with moist and tender chicken meat inside. I'd suggest go easy on the red chilli unless you're a fanatic for the hot and spicy. No seating and only takeaway but you can find a spot to sit next door in the courtyard garden.
Food Booze Shoes
The fried chicken game has been upped recently with the opening of Hot Star Large Fried Chicken just over three weeks ago in Liverpool Street in CBD south, shortly after the Taiwanese franchise’s first two Australian stores opened in Melbourne . Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is a Taiwanese chain with more than 40 stores in its home country and an increasing presence in south-east Asia and now Australia, where expansion in Sydney is on the cards. Large Fried Chicken "Original" from Hot Star Large Fried Chicken, Liverpool Street, Sydney Famous in Taipei's Shilin Night Market where it originated, Hot Star's signature product is an opened up chicken breast, on the rib bone, deep fried with a flour coating then seasoned to desired spice levels. The chicken is served piping hot out of the deep fryer in a paper bag, then plastic-bagged by the customer for their taking-away and eating enjoyment. They're not kidding when the
I Ate My Way Through
From Taipei’s Shilin Night Market, to the streets of Melbourne and Sydney, the latest hype in the world of fried chicken is Hot Star. Sydney’s first Hot Star store has opened up on Liverpool Street, across the road from World Square and is expected to expand around Australia on a franchise model. So what’s all the fuss about? I chat with co-owner, Kyle Lam - What inspired you to bring Hot Star to Australia? Once you have tried Hot Star, you can see how easy it was to be inspired! Hot Star has a cult following in Taiwan, and indeed across Asia. It is a unique take on an ubiquitous product, with fried chicken being universally loved across all cultures, we didn’t think Australia ought to miss out on Hot Star Large Fried Chicken experience! I’ve seen photos of side dishes like deep fried chicken cartilage grace the web, are there intentions to expand the menu to include these delicacies? Hot Star international does in fact have quite an extensive menu on offer. We believe Australians sub
