Review Metisse Restaurant - Sydney

Meredith Tong
My husband and I dined here to celebrate our recent wedding and had such a beautiful evening at Metisse! The food was exquisite - we particularly loved the oysters, the duck and the beef courses. The service was impeccable - all the staff were warm, attentive and very knowledgeable. The restaurant decor is sleek and modern with plenty of space to allow for an intimate dining experience. We have already recommended Metisse to many of our friends and can't wait to come back!

An unmissable experience. The staff? Wonderful. The food? Exceptional. The decor? Spacious and modern. Whilst every dish was delectable the scallops are a must try! Perfectly cooked, with a beautiful chicken consommé and presented with an overflowing fog. A treat for the eyes and tastebuds (truly deserving of extra servings 👀) The quality here also extends to their wine, my partner (used to South African wines) found herself extremely pleased with each pairing. Finding a few bottles that will most certainly be joining our collection. Whilst I won’t discuss every dish I do encourage you to try this restaurant. Despite a small issue with the lights & fire alarm this restaurant left us eager to return for more. For exceptional food and better service you won’t be disappointed here.

Had my birthday dinner at MĂ©tisse, the first couple of courses were really great! The Mosaique will be a memorable one for me, presentation and taste wise - it was exquisite! . When we got to the duck, I'm not sure if it was the cook on the duck or the cutlery we were given, but it was very hard to cut through, delicious flavours though... then we came to the beef, the portion of it was quite large and a bit over then my medium rare liking. We also had matching wines, the selection of wines were great but when it came to the end they were all very very heavy. The overall experience was nice, we've had many great degustation's before across Sydney and this one setting us back at $185pp + $20 for tap water and $125pp for matching wines unfortunately we were just not blown away for the amount we paid. The service was okay, sadly we received many dishes with finger print marks on our plates (a bit hard to miss when each table has it's own down light strung above them) and to be very critical, not one staff came to wipe off the crumbs of our table. We had a lovely evening as it was a celebration of my birthday.

A late more detailed review. We came for a belated 20th anniversary dinner and came away with feeling like we had an 'experience'. The site is the Gastro Park (also a favourite from back in the day) so we were happy just on entering the warm, spacious room. Service was excellent from stepping in - not too much , not too little and very friendly. There's a great range of cocktails. All served beautifully (I liked the glasses so much I went out and bought some!). All the food courses are fabulous but for me, the mosaic is hard to go past. The photo doesn't do it justice - really incredible A wonderful restaurant for anyone looking for a special meal. We cannot wait to go again.

I love this restaurant vibe. The dishes are nice and worth for what I paid. Staff service is professional and they show respectful manner. I feel appreciate and grateful for all staffs who work and create amazing experience in food industry. Love to come back again and see how chef create any other new creation.

This is written with heavy heart and want to begin to say the service was AMAZING so professional so pleasant. Unfortunately for us the food was bland. This maybe childish but when my husband booked it as a special occasion for my birthday. We noticed a few people that night the desserts were served with a candle obviously they also celebrating there birthdays, I did not receive the special serving. My husband and I had a pleasant evening however feeling little disappointed.

Late review from 2021. Really enjoyed the dining experience at Metisse. The dishes were executed well with a nice balance of flavours and combinations. Duck was cooked perfectly. The staff were also friendly and personable, would not hesitate to recommend.

3.5 actually for the entire experience. Staff were amazing (esp the 2 girls, petite and tall blonde). We had the memory degustation. Initial courses were interesting but not mind blowing. The duck wasss sooooo good though!!! The truffle beef as well and the chocolate icecream. Those 3 courses (duck, beef and choc icecream) were the best so 5 stars to the chef for those! đź‘Ź If you're celebrating a birthday, you'll just get a normal candle on a candle holder. No tiny cake or anything. Minus 1.5 star for: - The seating arrangement was awkward. I don't like to eat facing the other diners. - The wait times in between initial courses can be shorter. We kept drinking water bec we were just hungryyy in between courses. - The cutleries can be cleaned better (expected for fine dining). - Water could be free. Did not expect to pay $10/person for still water when you're paying $185/person for the meal already. It was definitely an experience - worth a try!

A polished dining experience, like a high end Japanese. Métisse makes an extraordinary effort at presentation even though the cuisine is more Western than Asian. Overall the flavours and textures are very interesting. Wine list okay but biased towards European wines and some are pricey for what they are (like a Beaujolais at $250 - really?) Overall it’s a good but unusual experience

Came here for mum’s bday celebration and their service was great! Waiters were really friendly and nice. They made dining experience more comfortable and enjoyable. The ambiance was also nice, lights were dimmed down to make everything feel more intimate. The food. we had the journey course and everything was decent to great! Favourite dish was probably the duck and the lobster!! least favourite was the tomato based one! (First dish). I only took abite as the flavour was too strong and out there for me personally I couldn’t bring myself to take another bite. The last main dish was 45 day aged beef which was pretty decent as well, we asked for truffle on top for that dish and it made a huge difference to the taste. Overall I am satisfied with the restaurant, lovely experience!

We had the 5 course degustation with pairing wine. The food was delicious and such good value for money. The restaurant interior was beautiful and the service was fantastic. We were very impressed with our whole experience and will definitely be coming back.

Saw this new restaurant has a 5 course degustation with matching wine for $100 which seemed like good value so rounded up a few friends for a night out. The service is friendly and attentive but dishes were only average tasting. The scallop dish and pumpkin dish were really small. Favourite course was the beef Rossini and we also enjoyed the chocolate dessert.

Metisse is the new kid on the Potts Point block, having just opened 4 months ago. It’s occupies Gastro Park’s old home.

Metisse is a family affair. Chef Opel Khan is in the kitchen with his daughter as sous chef and wife Julie is on the floor. Needless to say the service is impeccable. The waiting staff, which all seem to be French, are friendly and informative (and also beautiful looking!).

As there were six of us we had the big table under the Italian crystal cloud chandelier of white bubbles and we chose the degustation with matching wines which costs an unbelievable $100. We loved each dish and we were quite full by the end of it. It’s definitely good value for money. The highlight for me was the duck a’ l’orange terrine which was like a mille feuille (pictured). I also loved the chocolate dessert (pictured) and the irresistible salted caramel icecream. I can’t wait to go back again. #metisse

Ps: We went back to Metisse last week and tried the butter poached lobster lasagna (pictured) and it was divine!
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
(3.5 stars)
Métisse – which has taken over the former Gastro Park site after it was briefly occupied by Antipodean and Ételek - is the work of Opel Khan. Khan has owned a number of Sydney restaurants, including Guru and Beluga, though none I’ve actually visited. I was lured into this one by the plating, and a general liking for the 'Barcelona' building's architecture. Unlike many of the newly gentrified Potts Point residents, I am not horrified by the nightlife and traditional residents of Kings Cross. However, by pulling your attention inward with a cloud-like feature light hanging over a long communal table where the good burghers of Potts Point are feasting The Last Supper-style, Khan does take your mind off what’s happening outside. Métisse's eight-course degustation, that, for $100, also includes matched wines, seemed too good an offer to pass up...
