Review The Royal Of Darlinghurst - Sydney

Katie Lau
What a lovely day at the Royal! The Royal offers gourmet sandwiches at affordable prices. I tried the 8 Hour slow cooked beef with pickles, melted provolone & red cabbage slaw served on baguette and a sparkling lemonade, both of which were made in house. The slow cooked beef was cooked to perfection and despite seeming like a small portion, it was very filling and certainly satisfying! I also really loved the Royal's interiors, small cozy and cool. Will be returning when I venture around Darlinghurst again!

Great hole in the wall style place with nice outdoor seating - very French feel about it. Haven't tried the food but had a quick takeaway coffee. They use the little marionette coffee. Running a LM Linea. Coffee was alright - had a double shot small flat white and it tasted a bit washed out. Not a very strong blend or perhaps had it when the beans were getting on the stale side. Still an ok coffee though - would go again.

This place is like a second home to me, fostering a nice crew of regulars with chilled out service and banter. Coffee has always been excellent. Food equally so with the classics: poached eggs, avo on toast, etc all cooked and presented beautifully, while their signature dishes: pikelets, chorizo salad, the HLT, are all brill. Great hang spot if you've got a few lazy hours to burn.

Ordered the smashed eggs with avocado and the egg whites were under cooked and runny all through the avo. Couldn't eat it and sent it back. To be fair, they did refund me in full.

Maybe give this one a miss unless you want a side of loud Irish rock during Sunday morning breakfast. Definitely avoid if you have a hangover, there are many to choose from in the area.

Amazing coffee and a great variety of food!!! I would definitely recommend trying this place. Keep up the good work guys!!

Food at this place is Instagram worthy! Truffle eggs are a winner. Fave breakfast spot.
Suresh Kerai
Ok breakfast spot. All seating is open so dress warm on cold days.

Creative brunch menu. Not only does it look great, it taste as good good as it looks.

They make the best coffee and the staff are always happy =)

Waited 25 minutes for coffee - which was burnt within an inch of its life. Had 3 meals forgotten aboutt, and when the food finally arrived it was horrific - would never recommend to anyone. Will not be back.

Terrible service, extremely inattentive waitress. She walked past a number of times and didn't offer any service. It was very obvious she was trying to avoid eye contact. Dirty table, food average!

Do not come here!!!! The service is absolutely terrible! We waited45 mins for a coffee that we ordered 4 times. When we finally got it, it tasted horrible. The staff could not care less. Our food took 1 hour.

Possibly the drunkest waiter in history! I have t been here in a while as they seem to be closed on weekends now? But a few weeks ago I decided to get lunch, coffee and food were good but the wait staff was some tattooed drunkard! He could barely manage to carry two empty cups back to the counter let alone get our order down without the stench of liquor knocking us both out. We decided to have a cheeky afternoon beer after woods only to find the same waiter sitting in the pub while the cafe was still open with his apron on chugging beers like they were about to run out. Some people have no idea...I came past the following Monday to tell his boss but the staff said the boss was never there...lucky for some, sack that idiot ASAP!

Don't even bother.... I'm sure the food and coffee are great, but unless you have an entire day free the service is just too terrible. We waited half an hour for coffees which didn't arrive and the 'waiter' didn't even come back to take our orders. Ended up giving up and going elsewhere. Life's too short.

Terrible service. I went to The Royal today after seeing their Instagram page. The service was some of the worst service I've ever experienced. The staff seemed to have had no idea what was going on. It took over 30 minutes to get our coffees, and we had to ask four times for table water, in the end I gave up and got it myself. Whilst the food was good, the staff were so disorganized constantly bringing us the wrong coffees and the wrong food. Then I ordered a coffee after my meal which took 30 minutes despite asking the staff three separate times for my coffee. Very disappointing. I wouldn't go back.

Waited 45 minutes for our food. Our coffee came when we were nearly finished eating. The coffee was burnt and my meal wasn't what I'd ordered. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Great muffins, but they're usually sold out. Very, very good coffee and - oh man - their muffins are to die for. Don't go expecting a smile with the service, they're much too cool for that.

They say that the best things come in small packages. If that’s true, The Royal in Darlinghurst fits the bill. Nestled comfortably on a corner of Darlinghurst Road, The Royal has quickly gained itself recognition as a popular go-to eatery in the inner-city. The picturesque café features tall, open windows, boasting a great view onto the street. It includes a convenient coffee window for those on the go, whilst also featuring alfresco dining. And, with its retro-like theme, sporting weathered brown leather seats and small circular tables big enough for two, The Royal has all the makings of an original café here to stay. The best and most important part, of course, is its menu. It may be small, but it’s certainly eclectic, serving dishes such as banana bread with passion fruit butter, shakshuka eggs with Persian feta and spice and their signature beef burger with pickles and provolone. If that’s too fancy for you, they also have your regular toast and bircher muesli for breakfast, and ch

The feta that topped it off was nice and crisp at the top but melts in the mouth when taking the bite. Plus I love feta so it was a double win. The only problem with the dish was the unfortunate

Overall, if you’re a hipster in need of a place to feel at home, a person walking around on the first Sunday of the New Year and struggling to find somewhere good to get a coffee, or most importantly someone who values good food at a great price, with coffee with high potential, The Royal should be on your list.

The food here is good but the service is terrible and the wait staff very unfriendly. Waited twenty minutes just to get menus. Won't be going back.

Please send the barista on some urgently needed customer service training or just let him go to find another job away from the customers.
This guy is just down right miserable. He drags you down with his dark black cloud outlook. The other day as two takeaway customers waited for their coffees he was down in the lane having a smoke. I'm sure they'd still be waiting if it weren't for the fairly friendly female staff member who had to fetch him!
I go to a cafe for good coffee along with a positive experience. unfortunately this barista is letting this cafe let alone the customers down.
Please just let him go and find a bright, friendly person who welcomes people to pop in for a coffee. Please!!

Good food but the SLOWEST service!

Favorite New Cafe. Darlinghurst/Paddington aren't probably the two places you think are short of cafes, but when you look at the other surrounding cafes, nowhere seems to do quick, cheap and great quality very well... it's always whimsical this, $8 fig and kumquat toast that.

The guys behind The Royal have built a cafe with a great culture offering everything you want from a cafe with great attention to detail. They roast Little Marionette coffee exceptionally well, do a wicked cup of $4 fresh juice and their slow cooked beef roll literally can't be taken to the airport... because it is THE BOMB.

As the others have mentioned here, the smashed eggs on toast are really nicely done with beautiful fresh ingredients and don't feel the need to have truffle oil or twice cooked anything... a rarity in the inner east.

Delicious. Ordered the poached bruschetta and a coffee. Service was quick and friendly. Rosetta on the coffee was beautiful and the taste matched the looks. Cannot fault the breakfast either, perfectly poached eggs and reasonably priced at 9.50$. Leaving this cafe full and satisfied. Would cone back on my next visit in Sydney

Take-away customers seems to be prioritized so DON'T take a seat

Food and coffee were great - diverse menu for both breakfast and lunch. Service just woeful though - one was at least pleasant though all were usually trying to avoid eye contact, both the food and coffee came out slowly and at different times. Would def go again but made the experience frustrating! Overall though, great spot.

The coffee is the best! Especially if you're a lover of black coffee...
Super friendly service and the breakfast bruschetta is amazing!

Just a quick review to say the coffee is awesome, the service is friendly, fast and impeccable and the food is prepared beautifully, is tasty and most of all fresh. Add to that a great atmosphere and warm ambience. I'm glad I love around the corner.
