Review Tropicana Caffe - Sydney

Shiran Perera
Great Cafe with super friendly staff! Options of indoor/outdoor seating. Good selection of hot/cold beverages. Huge serving of milkshake to cool down on a hot summer day!

Love to come here for Breakfast, Coffee, Dinner. Food always come out quick. Many menu are my favourites. Staff always friendly. Love to see you guy open after lock down.

Excellent fish & chips with salad and a glass of house-white (which is always really good). The staff couldn’t be nicer.

If it weren’t for it’s history, there’s nothing else redeeming about this horrendous dining hub. Still holding on by the old ducks who still frequent here from its halcyon days; Today it looks and feels like a hospital cafeteria - supported by the food quality. The majority of table staff are disinterested 14 year old kids earning some pocket money, While the kitchen look like culinary school trainees.. they’re slow, they regularly bungle up orders, and the food hasn’t modernised since like the 90s. Once a year I seem to come back - Then I get my overpriced bog basic fry up and barely tolerable coffee, and am instantly reminded that literally anywhere within 5k of this sad fallen institution does food better…

Ordered the grilled chicken and vegetables. The chicken was very bland and didn't come with any sauce (or the option for sauce on the side). My friend had the bolognese and said that it was incredibly salty. There are much better options in this area.

I have always found the coffee here to be good but my food experiences have been very inconsistent with some items burnt or over cooked, othera underdone and about 1/3 of meals timely and to a good standard. Sadly, I can no longer recommend. 😢

We haven’t been here for years because our last experience was so appalling. Nothing has changed. It’s not that cheap and the service is atrocious. The wait for very average food is long and they can’t even get the food to arrive at the same time. Never coming back again.

Don't waste your money, it's really expensive for the amount and quality you get, the 'big breakfast' only gives you 1 piece of sourdough bread cut in half and the coffee is disgusting! They must have a bread shortage?
Bottomlesspit
This is one of those fantastic Italian cafes that hasn’t changed in 20 years. I had the grilled chicken salad and it was heaven! So simple, but so good as the ingredients are so fresh. Chicken is cooked beautifully. I would love to go back and try the pasta.
The Next Rush
Quick, Full of Choice and a user friendly menu to suit all palettes catering to the traffic of locals and visitors and couched in predominantly Italian dishes! Love it here, strategically located at the junction points of Potts Point, Darlo and Rushcutters! It's been around for decades and has been a regular pitstop after work, after the walk of shame and early morning steak after a big one. We had the GRILLED CHICKEN breast with mash and carrots served with a Limone sauce! Nicely cooked and dominating portions that fill the plate.

The BISTECCA VELOCE involves a scotch fillet so there was no way I was going to choose anything else - YUM! You get to choose your side so I had mine with a garden salad and it was cooked perfectly.

The TROPICANA SALAD we had to share - love this as its got a mix of cos and rocket, tomato, boiled egg, grilled capsicum, sundried tomato and tuna with their home made dressing.

We were really surprised because the place was so busy with only about half a dozen or so staff managing all tables and the wait time was swift (bout 12 minutes actually) and we were at the furthest table outside in this large space and regularly checked on by service attendants! Great option for a time crunched work lunch and casual get together without breaking the bank!

One of the finest food I have eaten so far in Sydney. They provide customers with warm and delicious food. I was happy to found with this place(thanks to a close friend of mine). Also the restaurant might look bit odd from outside but trust me on this, the food is really good! And the portions are generous as well!! Finally, for student like me this is restaurant with budgeted menu.

What has happened!!!
Apparently new owners have taken over, and it is not the same.
My breakfast was not good at all. The eggs were over cooked and my bread was toasted to near extinction.
Such a shame.
Andrew
The pasta was the best now it’s just like the rest

I’ve been coming to Tropicana for 17 years

I’m fortunate enough that I get to eat at all of the top restaurants regularly, however the pastas at Tropicana kept me coming back all the time. I even used to get it take away.

This restaurant got sold a few months ago and the pasta has now become bland and nothing special.

I have no Idea what the old owners used to do to make the pasta sauce so tasty. It didn’t matter what sauce it was, they changed them every day or two but they were much much better.

Please PLEASE ....new owners ....have a look at what has changed.

Sydney is full of highly successful restaurants that fail after being sold.

Bonne chance 👍

Simple no fuss delicious cafeteria with famous salads and huge menu from focaccia to pasta and everything in between order at the counter and cash only

This cafe (or caffe) has been at its location, with lots of outdoor tables on the sidewalk and in view of the Coca Cola sign since 1980! Actually, this history is pretty charming. Surely they must be doing something right. And they are: it’s a fun, cheap cafe for the locals, with a focus on Italian food. Order off the brightly lit menus on the wall, and they’ll bring your food out to you.

A canteen style cafe, no frills food & service. We ordered an eggs with bacon & an eggs with smoked salmon, and that's exactly what you get plus half a tomato & toasts (lots of toasts!). The serving sizes are quite generous for the prices. The food tasted fine, but the coffees are superb! Great spot to sit outside to enjoy a good coffee & people watch!
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Sir and Mlady popped in to Tropicana Caffe for breakfast. This is a famous place as it's the birth place of the world renowned Tropfest - the world’s largest short film festival!

It was a cold morning and we both decided to have a “hot hearty” meal. The venue is huge and airy and it certainly was popular! The numbers for the table are not on the table as you would expect – they are suspended above the table on the roof. How novel is this!

They have a great range of meals and there are displays with different cakes to choose from as well. There is an area where you can choose your sauce of choice, e.g. HP sauce, Tabasco and many more.

We ordered the all-important “first cuppa of the day”. Sir his usual skim flat white and Mlady her usual, a weak soy cappuccino. Coffees are good here and we certainly enjoyed these.

No matter what you get, you've got a safe bet with the food here. Large selection, yummy food, easy and quick service. Whenever I go out to eat with my partner it's never a discussion about where to go: It's always Tropicana. We're there I'd say twice a week. The pasta is amazing and they're happy to customize the toppings to what you want. The SALAD is what I love about them; best I've ever had. The atmosphere is fine, it's nothing to write home about. Bright florescent lighting with TV's everywhere playing music videos. Very casual. It's no romantic night out, but if what you want is quick, easy, GOOD food, then this place is for you.

The Tropicana provides the customer with an open and relaxed atmosphere and is a great place for a casual eat. Great pasta and Italian food, and delightful service with all friendly staff. Great coffee too.
Little Eats Sydney
In the heart of the Kings Cross, the Tropicana Caffe is a Sydney institution which at first glance may not seem a typical kid friendly cafe but with an extensive menu and a no frills atmosphere this is an easy option to feed the kids for time strapped parents. The Trop (as it’s known by loyal locals) is a Sydney institution, home of the Tropfest film festival, it has been in operation since the early 1980′s. It’s a hub of early morning cyclists, after gym bunnies, laptop users, hipster poseurs and minor celebrities. On weekdays in the early evenings it’s a place where work suited parents feed their kids on the way home, after picking them up from childcare. At first glance it’s plain but clean décor doesn’t seem like the usual kid friendly option – but it is. I have been taking my kids there since they were born and it’s perfect because it is huge and bustling, easily absorbing loud noises

Easy to drink with a good temperature and smooth froth, although there was way too much of it. The coffee could have been stronger. The coffees here could be inconsistent. I was there with my mother-in-law and her one looked really weak. She rated it two stars.

Omelette. The wort service and breakfast I have had in Sydney

Brushetta with Bocconcini. Very yumm, but remember to specify sourdough!

-----03 Jan, 2015-----

Brushetta with Bocconcini. Sourdough toast soaked in olive oil, topped with chopped tomato and bocconcini and spices.

-----01 Jan, 2015-----

Brushetta with Bocconcini. Best to order the sourdough option. Two slices toasted, smothered in olive oil and chopped tomato. Bocconcini is an optional extra for $1. to make a total of $6.50. I could live on that meal.

There are so many better restaurants in the area you should save your taste buds for! Tropicana's staff were slow and unfriendly, the food came out 10 minutes apart (there were 3 of us) and our entree came out AFTER our main meals?! (And after chasing it up!)
The food was very average. So overpriced for something that may as well have been a frozen dinner, heated and served on a place.
Kate
Great food. I visit Tropicana almost every fortnight. The service is speedy and you know what to expect. They are always happy to alter menu items. Reasonably priced for good quality speedy food. The atmosphere isn't much, particularly when it's packed with families and far too many kids running amuk in a crowded space. However, it's worth it for the delicious food. My favourites are the summer salad, veal al limone and bacon egg muffin. Highly recommended.
Cindy
The fish and chips is freshly cooked, love the very light batter, so tasty!!
Egg Benedict is average. Serve good coffee here!!!
Atmosphere is a bit like fast food restaurant, no frills.

Been here twice for lunch and once for dinner. Service was always great, food simple but nice. Recommend the romana focaccia!

Scary salad. I had dinner at trop last night.i hadnt been there for years. it was an old stomping ground of mine in the 80sfirstbof all the interior was dissapointing very tacky no atmosphere. i orderd the schitznel with salad . i t came in 5min which was suspicious. and was as thin as paper and tasted liked crumbed paper. my salad was scary
. it consisted of iceberg letuuce which had brown edges and 2 tomatoes.it didnt even venture near that. it was overpriced, and all i could think of is how would have liked to have gone to Unas across the road for a decent schitznel. and i cant understand why its popular, as the food is crap and the service a grumpy young girl behind the counter who didnt want to be there

Now I know why the food was cheap!

It was bland.

And by the service of the staff, I can tell they don't like their jobs.

Great spot but poor quality.
Deb
Average food presented in an old fashioned cafeteria style. Old style presentation. Cheap for the quantity of food given.

Terrible. There are no redeeming features to be found in the service, food or atmosphere. Why does this place have such a cult following? Inside is so badly designed, with the low ceilings, unattractive menus and tacky plastic furniture. The staff may as well not be there for how useful they are. The food was shocking - I ordered a vegetarian breakfast that uncluded 2 eggs, bread, hash brown and onions. A jumble of food messily mixed together in a little pot and 2 seperate slices of thin toast, soggy with butter, we're placed in front of me. The eggs resembled the powdered variety served at McDonald's and were overcooked. The onions were charred to a dark brown and literally swimming in oil, a few quarters of mushroom were indiscernible among the sodden mass. The hash brown was also congealed with cheese and grease. No solace could even be found in the supposedly sourdough toast - it was stale on the crust and soggy with butter in the centre. Overall I found the meal to be quite indelible and unpalatable. My partner ordered a chicken schnitzel sandwich and informed me that the schnitzel was mostly breadcrumbs and felt as if it had been overcooked in a microwave. A supremely dissapointing experience, especially as I had heard such good things about this Darlingurst icon.
Peter
Went for breakfast was not impressed by waitress missing half of my order, however the food was ready fairly quickly. The restarunt is modern but lacks any atmosphere.

2 words - chicken salad!

Really?. I don't get why people like this place. Really plain, average food that I could easily whip up at home. Give it a miss.

Great salads!

Never again. Insipid, overpriced coffee. Simple food that is cheap to make is sold at inflated prices. There are many better cafes in Darlinghurst.

Paper thin schnitzel.. Despite being an institution in Darlinghurst, I recently ventured in to Tropicana for the first time.
The queue to the cash register was long and took about 15 mins to progress.
I ordered a standard schnitzel from the menu board. The check out chick at the counter was so poorly trained, she didn't know the board menu, nor knew how to operate the cash register. Hence the slowness. It took one of the more experienced staff to take over and move things along.
After 30 further minutes, when my food FINALLY arrived - after 2 chase ups with the floor staff - (my mate's meal arrived 15 mins before mine - same choice) my schnitzel looked like it had been beaten to the thickness of a sheet of paper. Tasted about the same, presented on dry, stale rye. Just ordinary.
While the other patrons seemed to be happy enough, I was so disappointed. Will I return? Unless I have a hankering for slow and lousy service and eating photocopier paper....NO!

Terrible food, terrible service, terrible style. Why the hell do people eat here!?

School Canteen?. I have been given my history lesson with Tropicana, and might I say I was expecting something a lot better than stiff undercooked lasagna that was thrown on a plate and a chicken salad that had rotting leaves throughout.

You cant expect service in a self-serve restaurant/cafe so I can't say anything more. However, in regards to the premises I would have to say that tropicana has a very uninviting look and gives a very canteen vibe with their uncomfortable plastic chairs that you slide off.

If you like to work for your food almost as hard as the famer does growing the food and you enjoy stiff undercooked italian then this is the place for you, if not I would not suggest tropicana.

I dont do self service and sterile cafes so you wont see me here again.

Can't go past the chicken salad always good everytime

Good for cheap food. Good chicken salad

Healthy Food, and quick Service. This is the sort of place that is great for lunch or an early dinner.

The system works so you order at the counter, and pre-pay. Then your meal and drinks are bought to your table. All tables are clearly marked, and it all seems to work very well.

They have two in house ATM machines, and only take cash.

Salads and Sandwiches are all great, and fresh. They have a nice range of pastas as well.

Thumbs up on this one
