Review Madmex - Sydney

By the difficulty I was having ordering a burrito it occurred to me I've never been to Mad Mex before. It's essentially a Mexican subway. Hopefully the man in the luchador mask isn't kiddy fiddler Jared hoping for a second career across the border. I'm really happy they have so many vegan options on the menu. Even if they haven't embraced it for anything more than market share. It's refreshing nonetheless What wasn't refreshing, predictably, was the vegan chicken burrito melt. It was surprisingly nice but I had 1 star expectations. It was tasty, spicy and while the vegan cheese didn't quite melt it gave a really good flavour. I automatically expected them to offer fries as a side but they didn't. I guess that's my only request.

Fast, efficient and friendly staff. Clean restaurant. COVID-safe policies at this location. Handy location. About three blocks east of Hyde Park. During non-COVID times, the restaurant has in-store seating. There’s a good atmosphere at this store:

I have been frequenting this particular Mad Mex store since my university days, and have always enjoyed my dining experiences. Reflecting on a recent visit: the service is fast, friendly, and accomodating of dietary requirements. While the new vegan options are greatly appreciated, I opted for a 'fresh' vegetable only burrito. The 'hot' spicy sauce always goes down well, as do the additional condiment options. The above, in addition to the cleanliness and convenience of the store will ensure I will be returning again in the near future. Gracias, amigos!

Disappointing..... I love this place .... Reasonable price and good quality of burrito always!! My bf and I love hot sauce and we asked extra 2 hot sauce today. After I got home, we realized that one of the container barley had any hot sauce inside... So disppointing. I paid $25 not $2 ... I think to get 2 extra hot sauce is not a big deal for them... I feel like they were just lazy to open new bottle of hot sauce when they only had 1 customer in the shop.. Hope it will be better!!!!!

Good food and good staff. Forgot my chips and soda but came back later and they gave them to me immediately. Very friendly manager.

Crown st premises is filthy and nobody feels the need to clean or wipe down the benches ! The paying guest is expected to clean the place prior to sitting down ! Service is routine and very low ! Seriously look elsewhere for a quick meal …..

Great tasting nachos, medium spice could be spicier. I’ve been to Mexico I would know!

I’ve eaten at this mad mex countless times and I’ve never had a bad experience. Absolutely a joy to eat there with their excellent customer service and of course the food is 10/10

Neat little place, service is swift and it is consistent as a fast food chain. Had the naked burrito and had many options to choose from. The guacamole was a bit lazy - I found half an avo whole in there.

Popped into Mad Mex for a quick and easy dinner. They have burritos, nachos, quesadillas and desserts like churros. Hubby and I got the bare bowl. A bowl of rice, beans, meat of your choice (pulled pork, beef, chicken), lettuce, cheese, tomato, salsa (mild or spicy), sour cream. It was easy and tasty. Service was fast. It was also cheap as they accepted the entertainment voucher :)

I was starving and my belly craving a burrito and the closest place near me was Mad Mex.

Ordered the chicken burrito with the guacamole (a must add for all burritos, when eating burritos lol) and like always it was your consistent simple burrito.

Apologies for the unappealing photo of the burrito.. I cbb undressing the burrito and take a photo then dress it back up.. Just want to eat straight away 😂

Overall it's your simple burrito, nothing outstanding, but still 👌🏼 if you're belly is screaming for some Mexican!

***Showtime*** ✌🏼️

I went with my gf for quick dinner at the store at crown street over a month ago ... The chicken looked like it was there for hours , the steak seems so dry , the young tall guy who on that day who was wearing a yellow bandana couldn't even roll my burrito properly, there was a girl ( angie) i thing she is the manager she was talking to me in Spanish, I was like we are in Australia that s the law ,, why the manager doesn't have staff who speak English and not Spanish!!!!... It's Australia not Mexico..... plus I remember there was a girl on the grill area with very dark short hair, she was the only one working, while all the others girls were laughing and dancing , where is the manager is at ???? Why this poor girl has to take all the rubbish on her own when u guys have a young guy standing and do nothing ...It look like a damn primary school... U guys should be ashamed to hired staff like that...the food is shit as , u guys not even cooking anything .....al ready made up food... I watched u guys open bags and just pouring into the pot , ) I do not call fresh food ....)))) u guys are ridiculous... Don t ever go there !!!

Mad Mex is such a let down nowadays. The burritos lack any real flavour, need to be drowned in the hot sauce provided. The Churros is a joke.

Who is up for the 1kg burrito challenge? Not me..haha! Although I didn't participate the Man vs Food completion, i thoroughly enjoyed watching my colleagues painstakingly consume the gigantic roll and continue to suffer from the aftermath

For me I went for the slow cooked beef with hot sauce at normal size, it was very tender as expected and the sauce was just hot enough for me. I also tried their churros with chocolate dipping sauce at a seperate occasion, it was satisfying.

As far as fast food joint goes, Mad Mex ain't too bad. The food challenge was certainly good entertainment as long as I wasn't on the receiving end.

Went here to do the 1kg burrito challenge at the end of May. I've done the challenge in previous years and nothing changes with Mad Mex - you know what you're gonna get.

Decent burrito. Fair price. Staff were great. I didn't want that weeks mask.and they had leftovers to let me pick another which I'm thankful for.

When I first stumbled upon this Mad Mex outlet, there were a few cops inside. I was wondering what was going on, but then I realised that they were just dining here and having a good time! So I headed right in!

The ambiance is pretty good, with ample seating inside. The staff members were really friendly. I went for a Veggie Naked Burrito, along with Pepsi Max lime. I chose the spicy sauce, which was indeed spicy! The meal was delicious, and really filling as well!

Mad Mex is turning out to be my favourite Mexican chain, beating Guzman Y Gomez!

Food - 5/5
Ambiance - 4.5/5
Service - 5/5
Value for money - 3.5/5
Overall - 4.5/5

Can't go wrong with a chicken burrito! Better than Guzman y Gomez in my opinion. Good no fuss food, well constructed at an affordable price.
Simply Starving
Mad Mex is easily the best Mexican chain in Sydney. Fast, fresh food at an affordable price, offering decent serving sizes and a great selection of condiments. My go to is the chicken burrito bowl with guacamole, which never disappoints! Great place to go if you're looking for a quick fix.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
The food is fresh and fast and the service is friendly and fast. The hardest thing about any visit is choosing - as their are quite a few options. The soft taco's - they come in a serving of two - are a great filler for when you aren't after the equivalent feeling you get from a large three course meal.
Insatiable Munchies
The first thing that greets you as you enter the outlet is a chandelier made up of Corona Bottles!!
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Mad Mex: Fresh Mexican Grill is a new addition to Crown Street, and it is a fast food restaurant where the owners pride themselves on freshness. It's a bright space, and decorated with a groovy Mexican fighting mask in keeping

This Subway-style Mexican food bar is great for fast, fresh, healthy and quality options! Their food is packed with authentic flavours, service is friendly and they have funky lights and mosaic wall hehe Mad Mex L's chicken quesadilla was a great snack op
I Ate My Way Through
The Challenge: Beginning in May 2001, Mad Mex have been celebrating Cinco de Mayo annually by holding a 1kg burrito challenge – a mammoth burrito stuffed with beans, rice, meat, cheese, lettuce, salsa, and sauce. The rules are simple, there aren’t any restrictions on toppings, as long as the burrito weighs 1kg at the end of the line. Finish it in store in a single sitting, and bring your receipt and wrapper to the counter, and you’ve beaten it! No time limit. Difficulty: The part that really gets to you is the rice, and the beans. It fills you up fast, and because you’ll need to chew your way through it, it slows you down as well, making this harder. I easily got to the halfway point, three quarters would be rough, and that last quarter would be the struggle. In all, it was one of the easier to beat challenges – in 2014, they gave away 17,000 masks Australia-wide. Preparation: Given that this isn’t a speed eating challenge, it IS a lot easier than some of the others. I would say to go hungry, but not to have starved yourself the whole day. Also, because you get to pick your toppings I would suggest choosing the fresher tasting ingredients, because it’ll help keep you motivated to keep eating. I had the Pork Al Pastor as my choice of meat – a mixture of seasoned pork meat with bits of pineapple through it – and the hits of sweet mixed with the savoury really helped me get through it all. What you win: A Mad Mex Wrestling mask to take home, as well as the bragging rights! At Kingsley’s though, the non-steak menu is short and sweet, and the focus – rightly so – is on their impressive range

I’ve had many american friends complaining that they can’t find good mexican food in Sydney, it is almost as difficult as looking for the holy grail. Until recently, this not-so-new mexican joint in Darlinghurst that opened last year, looks like it can be

Mexican for the masses. For years Mexican never really took off on a mass basis - probably because everyone thought it was just nachos. That's not true - it's the same couple of meats (beef, chicken, fish) but just done in different ways (nachos, tortilla, enchilada, burrito, quesadilla etc just changing the carbohydrate wrapping). Followed the latest review and had the quesadilla - made the mistake of trying to eat it with a knife and fork so a huge gooey mess with the sour cream (included).

No real pretence here - order, they make the thing as fast as humanly possible, shovel it to you, you shovel it in your mouth and get out of there. Speedy Gonzalez indeed.

Quesadilla FTW. Skip the burrito and everything else and just get a quesadilla. They are the best and only reason to visit this Mad Mex. Nom nom nom.

Poor effort. I got a burrito. The place is run like a bit of a circus, prime example of too many cooks spoiling the broth. All the staff are shouting over each other and the customer is left struggling to understand who and what is being said. They are tightest burrito place I have ever been too in terms of their portions. Would not waste the money again. Guzman and Gomez is much better.

Great quick dinner. The folks at Mad Mex should be thanked for breaking the drought of good Mexican Food back several years ago. They offer a fast food style quick meal, supplemented by booze, just the right way to finish a hard day or start a hard core night.

A bit bland. Solid hearty food and better than many of the competitors but it really doesn't get the rich, marinated-for-a-week flavour of real Mexican. Plus I chose the hottest salsa ("picante") and it barely rates above mild.

Great soft tacos. I recently had pulled pork soft tacos at Mad Mex , Gusman y gusman and Beach Burritos to see who had the best. All are good but Mad Mex came out on top - mainly due to the perfect amount of pork to black beans. I wish they had Beach Burritos ambience though becuase you really have to eat and leave at Mad Mex

The best Mexican I've had in Sydney - yes it's essentially takeaway but what you lack in atmosphere you get in flavor in spades! I misty get the naked burrito as it is tasty but still low carb while my partner can't go past the soft tacos with extra hot sauce. All of my friends go fir the burrito which is the dinner of beer-drinking champions. It also helps that they sell beer!

In California we have Chipotle, now Sydney has Mad Mex. Both are great for a quick bite. The salsas are excellent - and that's coming from someone whose mum made it fresh daily. Consider yourself very lucky Sydneysiders.

Out of the two Mexican Burrito bars in Sydney Guzman Y Gomez is a clear winner for it's fresh made food leaving Mad Mex a distant second...

I had a slow, soggy, amorphous dish. My companions weren't impressed either.

Great for a quick take out. Quick friendly service, kinda like a Mexican version of a Subway, just better.
