Review Istanbul On King - Sydney

My husband and I went there tonight. Although the service was very friendly it's was very lacking attentiveness. We had to help ourselves to the drink fridge and waited over 30mins for our food. You may not think that's a big deal but we were the only customers. The food was delicious, loved the lamb and chicken cooked over the coals and the bread was delicious too.

An average Turkish cuisine restaurant. Their set menu prices is not expensive but to my view you don't get what you pay for it. Next time I would just request what I like rather than a set menu price.

This used to be my favourite restaurant - a long time ago. Unfortunately, over time the prices have gone up, and the quality of the service has gone down. Tonight, I had a large black hair in my food, for the second time (I also had this experience last time I was there). One main came out a full 15-20 minutes before the other. The mixed shish plate is by far the most expensive in the neighbourhood, at $38, and unlike pretty much every other place around, it comes with no dips, making it overly plain and not that enjoyable. The cheapest dip is a crazy $12 – so you're looking at a $50 main. After paying that, the icing on the cake was the woman serving coming over while my daughter was halfway through her dessert, snapping at us to hurry up because they needed the table. Considering we were paying $72 for a really average meal for one adult and one child, and we had only been there for about an hour at most, this really put the experience over the top. Never. Again. There are plenty of better places to eat on Enmore Road. Rude, average, unhygienic. Stay away.

My wife and I enjoyed a lovely Saturday-night dinner at The Sultan's Table. Although the establishment was extremely busy, we were served quickly and efficiently, and our waiter, Emre, was wonderful. The food was fantastic and well-presented, we were very satisfied with our meal! I highly recommend this restaurant.

Food menu is great with reasonable prices. Sadly however, only 3 stars given due to my dine in experience being well below expectation. Having to wait extensive times for food and having to ask multiple times for water, drinks and bread left bad impression. Especially when I had to get up and get things on my own. Having to ask 5 times for the same thing is somewhat below standard. Staff seem unable to cope with only 6 table services but venue made the Take Away and home delivery more of a high priority over their dine in patrons. Since that seems to be the case on more than this single occasion, it's unlikely I would recommend or return to have a dine in experience.

Their perfectLy textured Turkish bread and assortment of dips earn this place 5 stars alone. Outrageously good value and the din filled garage-come-seating area at the back gives this place all the cheap and cheerful charm you could ask for. The kebabs bang too. In general a great cuisine for takeaway.

Best dips ever! That’s a large size with whatever flavours you want. We were sad that beetroot was such a large portion and told our waiter, we’d prefer chilli. He was very kind to give us another plate with just chilli. Talk about exceptional service 👌🏼👌🏼 Tasty and well cooked lamb kebabs and delicious pides!! Highly recommend.

This place has the best pide I have ever had. I keep going back for more. It's nice to see the Turkish grandmothers helping in the background & the staff are all quite friendly.

Nearly 20 years ago, Istanbul’s opening may have driven at least one low-end competitor out of business. Istanbul is still popular, especially late as it opens until midnight most nights, but it now faces much stiffer competitors from a lot of fancier Mediterranean places in Newtown. Istanbul certainly doesn’t match them, with the mushy reheated felafel rather than the rich crispy kind, although all other ingredients, dips, and sides in the window are clearly decent quality. The price isn’t high, $10 for felafel with the lot, but you can pay about the same for a much better (but different, although similar) offering from Cairo Takeaway. Some seating inside (a few stools at the window and some tables at the back) but best for takeaway.

Decent Turkish food, but nothing too special. The main reason why it is full of people is purely the location. It is the recipient of intoxicated USYD college students and headless youngsters lingering around Newtown late at night after the nanny-state lockout laws pushed them out of the CBD. The snack packs aren't bad, but an improved meat-to-chips ratio and cheese as standard would be welcome. The pides are a good alternative, despite being a bit too oily at times. The place can get extremely hot inside at times - I like to think the intention is to mimic the humidity of Istanbul. However, none of that matters, as the majority of customers are simply not in an appropriate state to care.
Food
Snack packs are okay, but not really great as they don't put chicken salt on the chips! The staff there are really chill and friendly at least.

Aw, was really looking forward to garlic sauce and cheese on my snack pack. Instead received tzatziki and no cheese in sight. Maybe next time :(

Terrible service. Went to use the washroom right after I ordered and didn't recognise me and wouldn't let me back in.
Blablabpablabkabla 150 word count done

As far as a Turkish kebab shop goes (and not one of those restaurants in Auburn), Istanbul on King is very good! The prices are reasonable and the quality is unquestionable. Service may not always be the warmest but certainly improves if you drop a phrase in Turkish here or there and if you're warm yourself. In any case, the service is impeccable and the boys at Istanbul on King do things and do it well. The availability of EFTPOS and Paypass are most welcome but no doubt this may have something to do with this being on the busy King Street in pub-laden Newtown. Ambience is the main, unfortunate shortcoming of Istanbul on King; however, the restaurant is only yea large and those are the breaks.

Would we recommend Istanbul on King? Definitely, particularly for those moments when you're feeling peckish but not too picky. For something healthy, we recommend getting a plate with a variety of dips and more salad to meat and other food or ordering a tabbouleh (they're great!).

REVISED (25/9/16):
The service has been declining. We've noticed that, though we've chosen extras and paid for them, the boys have been stuffing up our order time and again. I guess it's sort of our own fault for not checking the order but this is poor form by these guys.

Our advice to the customer is to check before you leave the store. As for us, being as much as a kebab or two short (a few dollars worth of tabbouleh, etc.) will just have to be.

Best pide I have ever had. Recently I got delivery from this place. Karsik pide, serve of chips and grill platter.

Pide was awesome. Cooked very well. But unfortunately I can't say same thing on grill platter. The using processed chicken which is u can buy from any market frozen stick chicken and the lamb was like gum, it was really so hard to eat. Kofte and rice was good.

Brilliant. This is my local for late night drunk food. The food was so good there that I eat there for a normal dinner. Their chilli burger is to die for.

Anzac Day Turkish food. Walked past this place millions of times in wandering up and down King Street but never tried it. They seem to have a pretty full spread of standard items for this type of joint - kebabs, pizzas, pides, burgers, falafel - saw some good looking zucchini fritters. Got the doner kebab combo. Doner kebab was OK and they withheld the salt on the chips as requested. Good to have some relaxed seating up the back (missing the hookah though!) in addition to the very busy front section. No demerits tonight.

Charge $18 for plate that was misleading. Ordered a shish kebab plate, it said on the menu it was chicken breast meat and for $18.50 I thought it was fair. What I received was not breast, it was fatty pieces of chicken which of course was dissapointing and misleading. I'm not going to kick up a fuss but will not return.

I read about this place on an article listing 100 things you must try in Sydney. Their Lamb Kebab paired with Portuguese Burger Sauce made that list. So here I go again on my lunchtime adventures to explore.

I thought after the multiple popups of yeeros I no longer will find myself at a kebab joint. As you're approaching it, it looks no different to the next dingy kebab store. When you enter you're greeted with the dull sounds of Middle Eastern dance music and the decore is an unloved Turkish theme.

I placed my order. The man taking my order was nice enough. They even have Paypass for quick cashless payment.

I sat on the nearby stools that stared back out onto King Street. It was nice to dine and watch the world of hipsters pass by. There's no line out the door but they get a fair few works buying their lunch to go.

The lamb kebab with Portuguese Burger Sauce isn't on their menu but they were instantly aware of what I wanted when I asked for it... I was surprised at how decent this tasted. Not cheap or nasty like most. The sauce had a decent kick leaving my mouth tingling 5-10 minutes after I left the place. I should have ordered a baklava and Turkish tea... it would have really tied this whole meal together.

They even have their own personalised wet wipes...

I didn't try the rest of their menu but if the lamb kebab was anything to go by, I'd be pleasantly surprised...

Best kebabs in Newtown!. Came here for lunch and had the mixed kebab snack pack with chips and garlic sauce. The food was cooked well and tasted delicious. The place offered a good vibe with great music playing on the TV screen. Prices are reasonable and the place is well maintained.

Chilli chicken burgers best ever!!!

What a Surprise. Expecting a typical deconstructed kebab when I ordered a mixed plate and mixed grill with my friend, we were delightfully surprised by the amazing food that arrived (home delivery). Carefully packed and separated, the hommus and tabouli was refreshing and the meat, delicious.

My favourite was in fact the Turkish bread and Baba Ghanoush we ordered as well on a whim, usually I'm not a big fan of turkish break which is usually spongey and dry - this has to be the best I have tasted, apparently home made as well.

Highly recommended, thumbs up! (too bad I don't have photos)

"Uncooked Chicken Burger" I really used to enjoy getting a chicken burger from here after a night on the drinks. Pulled the chicken out of the bun as I just wanted the chicken only. My chicken was raw in certain places.
I brought this to there attention, they were not apologetic at all and simply just made me a new burger.

Loved the freshly cooked pide. We had potato pide and garlic pide and both were hot, delicious and full of flavour. The service was quick and pleasant and even friendlier when we said thank you in Turkish (got to love Google).

The Food was ok, but very unfriendly. We was waiting 15 min just for 2 kebab as well!

Poorly Made Food. Ordered a kebab to take-away. When I got home it fell apart as it hadn't been rolled properly, and though I ordered and paid for cheese it hadn't been added. Not impressed.

The food is clean. The establishment trustworthy. Menu has all you need if your looking for a hearty meal. Delicious kebabs. Tasty chicken burgers and excellent pides and pizzas. Staff are friendly and professional.
