Review Turpan Restuarant - Sydney

Enjoyed the Xinjiang/Uyghur food at Turpan! Delicious 凉面 - called "cold noodles" on the menu but it's chewy handmade noodles with tender roasted cumin lamb, onion and capsicum. With fresh cucumber slivers for good measure. Really good - only thing would be: I wish there was a tad more sauce to flavour the noodles (was amazing when I added more black vinegar at home). The lamb ribs had great flavour (almost identical flavour profile to the first dish - stir-fried with cumin, capsicum and onions) but I do prefer larger and chunkier-cut ribs over the small pieces here (which made them slightly dry/chewy). Overall, though, hearty and satisfying food, and friendly service when we went to pick up :)

Had the craving for xinjiang food and Turpan came up as the closest to us. I really wanted to get lamb skewers but unfortunately they sold out that night. We ended up getting the lamb and chive dumplings and the da panji (big plate chicken) with hand pulled noodles. The lamb dumplings were ok, a slight mutton flavour but the portion size was very generous, 10 in a serving. The dapanji was really good, flavoursome with tender pieces of chop up chicken pieces with the bone in. It does have a tiny bit of spice to it but my little one still loved it. Will definitely be back to try the lamb skewers.

I’ve been eating here for about a decade and love it. Friendly service and delicious food. Favourites are veg noodle, shredded potato, cucumber salad, veg dumplings all so so yummy!

Fri ~12:15pm 29-May-2021. The food is good but overpriced in my opinion. I tried the shredded potato vegetarian dish, 15.80$ seems a bit too much. See photo. I might consider some homemade noodles or dumplings next time.

Don’t usually leave bad reviews but this restaurant disappointed me a bit. The taste was alright but don’t think the price match the value. Lamb stew with veggies especially. 6 lamb bones with little to no meat on them. :(

Went on a recommendation from a friend and it was very surprising! The food was well cooked and came out all together - it was a pleasant surprise that there are so many dumplings in a single dish! The eggplant dish is delicious with lots of fresh garlic in the sauce and the lamb cumin skewers are a must. Worked out to be a good meal cost wise too.

The best Uyghur restaurant in the area. Comparing to other Uyghur restaurants, this is reasonably priced, the Goshnan and Legmen are a must try. Will definitely be back for more amazing experiences

Really great dishes - the stand outs are the their unique eggplant, their lamb skewers and their pancakes. Authentic flavours as well - would strongly recommend you to try their specialties rather than going for dishes you see at other Chinese restaurants!

We thought we’d grab a quick lunch in the neighbourhood before hitting Peter’s of Kensington to scratch that kitchenware itch. Kensington’s long had a reputation for interesting and tasty Asian food, but on this day, a Sunday, it looks like places are still closed because of COVID, are are closed for good, or closed a while ago and I didn’t notice.

I had rather interestingly simple style Chinese lunch today, reading the reviews of the restaurant I discovered this isn't just any other Chinese cuisine but particularly from Uighur province. My husband ordered lamb dish and I ordered three spiced tofu stir fry and rice which was pretty bland and boring. Simple home style cooking I can't really rate high on ambient or presentation etc. However my husband really enjoyed his lamb dish.

So what is Uyghur cuisine? I found it rather intriguing. Firstly, Uyghurs are one of the many ethnic minorities in China. They are from the Xin'jiang province which is between Mongolia and Kazakhstan. Their cuisine combines elements of Turkish and Chinese cooking techniques and because they are mostly Muslims the food they serve is halal.
Great food with friendly owner. This is a really great experience and a friendly owner who serves Chinese food with Muslim / Islam influences (known as Uygher I believe). My family and I enjoyed it, but we did over-eat. So order a bit less than the owner recommends. Lovely clean setting and cheap drinks, BYO options, etc.

One of the worst. Never before had I left so much food on the table at the end of our meal. The pancake was oily and definitely not fresh, Palau rice with lamb looked to be from the previous night and oily with a few rare pieces of over cooked lamb. Our main dish, spicy chicken with potatoes and rice noodle was so spicy that it numbs your tongue, it was simply not possible to finish the dish without upsetting your stomach. I'll give 1 out of 10 rating for food and experience. Never to go back again.

Worst Restaurant in Kensington. Interior smells awful and decor is so out of place. The only dish worth eating on the menu is the spicy chili beef which does not smell bad because of the amount of spices added. Even their grilled lamb kebab version has a raw meat like smell, very disturbing.

Flavour Explosion. One of the most curious things I found about living in Kensington for several years is that at any one time, young blokes will be guzzling chicken burgers and chips while Turpan sits fairly empty until dinner time.

For those of you willing to look outside the box, you will find in Turpan one of the best possible places to eat meat and noodle dishes, and even moreso for those who don ́t like pork, as it is a Halal restaurant. The fried lamb dumplings here are the best I ́ve had - handmade on site and always deliciously juicy. Another highlight is the Da Pan Ji - a platter dish of chicken, potatoes and handmade noodles soaking in a rich sauce of chillis, szechuan peppers, loads of ginger, plus aniseed and no doubt many spices I ́ve never even heard of. Any meat dish you choose from the menu here will be powerfully spicy and to be perfectly honest I ́ve loved everything I ́ve tried. If you feel the need for a little more plant-based food, the kelp salad is a lovely surprise - soft but substantial, and again, spicy and flavoursome.

Turpan is definitely not the most subtle restaurant, but everything is hearty, filling, and the flavour is turned up to a volume of 11. I never stay away for long and I don ́t think I ever will.

Northern Chinese, not Uyghur. Quite a few people seem to be confusing the different ethnic dishes of Xinjiang and imagining them all to be identical. If you're wanting to try traditional Uyghur food, this is not the place to go as the plates here (while some are very similar) come from the Muslim Hui and Han sides. Unless you've been to the region this won't matter too much, but if you have then you'll spot the differences immediately.

The quality of the lamb in the kebabs is not as good as other Xinjiang restaurants and the spice mix is not what you'll find in the region. The prices are also slighly higher and for smaller servings (but they are in Kensington and in an obviously more expensive building).

Nothing is actually too bad here (minus the kebabs) and the service is fine, but for a truly authentic taste of Uyghur cuisine I suggest visiting Sydney Uyghur Cuisine in Surry Hills, or Uyghur Cuisine by Darling Harbour.

3/5
