Review Urban Barrel Expresso - Sydney

Rattan Muttoo
Sandwich, coffee, tea shop with a small collection of sweet treats serving Campos coffee beans. Coffee is nice (had a piccolo) and the sandwiches are made to order. One thing that did stand out is that the coffee is more expensive than other places around (eg. Brooklyn Coffee on Pitt Street - little cart just outside the Westin Hotel does 2x coffees for $6 when you pay together) while Urban Barrel is $7+ (pedantic I know but there's so much choice around the MLC Centre). Worth checking out as another coffee / lunch spot.

They make great coffee and most of the staff are friendly besides one lady who has been rude and has no customer service skills at all. She is of South American decent and is always talking in Spanish with another staff while customers are around. I think it is unprofessional as most of the time I feel like I am being spoken about.

Like most mornings, I ordered my regular “small skim cap no sugar” . What I got this morning, was a coffee with sugar and a female staff member, with clearly a poor grasp of the English language, giving me attitude for returning it. The situation became comical when she aggressively advised that if I place an order through her ,(like I should pay attention each day with whom I place my coffee order with…my bad!! ), I should not have ordered a coffee with no sugar, if I don’t like sugar in my coffee--because it confused her!!! I explained that I did that once before and still got sugar in my coffee regardless. Then she advised if I am not happy with the coffee service then I should go elsewhere. I then suggested, how about each staff member taking orders that day put up their own sign ( in English ) on how they would like their customers to place their orders…good CAMPOS coffee but a very poor service delivery

I get my coffee from here every morning. The coffee and food (the wraps, toast and bacon & egg roll specifically) is delicious! Also in the morning, they have 3 baristas working, so the service is very quick. You will never wait more than 5 minutes.

All of them busy on their phones. Guy behind coffee machine playing on his phone and then makes my coffee from shots he'd pulled previously and milk which was boiling hot (again obviously premade). Not a great experience and my coffee was very average. Plus kind of gross that the guy is playing with his phone and then puts my takeaway lid on with his dirty hands. Management, no phones rule while at work would really help :)

It was the first time I went there, the coffee was good. The staff seemed friendly at the start but after I said “I’m good thanks, how are you?” Everyone went silent!! Lol so awkward, and I’m not sure why they were like this, I said the same things that I say at any other places that I get my coffee from lol They didn’t ask me if I wanted a small or large or sugar or anything either. So I guess I’ll go back to other happy people at other happy places next time I’m getting a coffee in the morning

I work in Martin place and have started coming to Urban Barrel in the last couple of weeks. They serve up awesome Campos coffee, the service is quick and friendly. I never wait more than a few minutes which is awesome as i'm often in a rush!

I go there every morning... coffee is always good plus service is amazing even when it’s crazy busy! The Brazilian girl at the till remembers my name and order and always has a smile on her face which is pretty cool.

Nestle on MLC food court, this cafe is now serving Campos blend Roma.
Coffee was smooth with acidic note at the end.
It not bad coffee at all

The coffee shop is at the entrance of the MLC, so it’s really convenient to grab cuppa coffee quickly. However, the service was not delightful. But the coffee bean they use was really nice. My cold brew was full of flavor and quite balanced. But why it served in a hot coffee cup😂

It’s the easiest way to grab a quick coffee at MLC as it’s just located at the entrance on Martin place.
There’s always been a line, but you don’t have to wait too long. The coffee is not bad. I start buying coffee from urban barrel more often now.

This might be the easiest place to get a quick coffee in the MLC centre and they seemed to use a good bean with a strong rich flavour. However, it was served so cold that I wolfed it down in 2 minutes, so definitely only good for a very quick coffee.

I regularly buy my morning coffee from here, but they strated disappointing me recently by making my coffee tastes so bad. I order flat white and extra hot. they make it as they like, some times warm and some times like cappuccino.
and they dont seem to bother and have very rude answers.
Today is my last day there. as my morning coffee is to bring me good mood at work and not that takes off my mood for the rest of the day.

Would be nice if the girl behind the register listened to what you wanted. I go here periodically but have gone every day for the past few weeks and my order is nearly always wrong. It is toast and coffee. How hard can it be? I didn't ask for sugar so why do you add it to the coffee? If the coffee guy smiled.. Armageddon would surely be on the way!

Just in here and asked for an egg wrap - no mushrooms and no meat - get the wrap - says 1 wrap veggie and I again confirm no mushrooms and all cooked scrambled egg only and told yes. back at my desk and not only are mushrooms pouring out including the disgusting brown liquid as I opted for fresh not toasted but there is bacon - and the eggs are cold so toasting is actually the only option and therefore not an option. Never again. Maybe just the Campos coffee as that is done very well but how hard is the one job you have - taking orders for food and bev - so hard that it doesn't get done right. $10.20 - a lot for one small coffee - however good - and a sandwich I have to throw away. Not good enough. Campos served elsewhere close enough to see and walk to. Epic fail.

There's always a line in the morning. A long line, but.... There's a reason the line is so long. I have no idea how two people can make so many coffees so quickly and have mine be so consistently perfect every day. The girl who takes my order remembers my name, my toast is always the way I like it and I have to wait half the time I do at cafes elsewhere. When it has settled down in the afternoon I get to have a quick chat with the Barista which I like. The only thing is that he takes less than a minute to@ make my coffee so it's back to work I go!

This place seems to always be queueing whenever I come by in the morning. Service is quite fast, and the girl in the counter remembers my name after a few constant visits, so that is very nice. However, it will be better if they actually hand the cups and confirm people's order and not just calling up names, as I've seen an instant where a homeless man taking other people's coffee. Their Chai lattes are one of the best around the area.

i just went there the customer servi@ces really really suck man .i think better u should change the staf they are not care about customer services especially the tall man the one make coffee.never ever come back to this shit cafe

I have been here a couple of times and will never go back, staff have attitude problems and act like they are doing you a favour by serving you, would also suggest they work on their image which is not polished at all compared to other places surrounding them. Nothing special here, 100's of other great places in the City to buy coffee and toast without having to deal with the rude attitudes.

East of George is something of a dead zone for coffee so I was interested to try Urban Barrel, a new coffee kiosk that has opened up in the revamped MLC Centre. My (Campos) coffee was smooth, well poured and flavourful. At $3 for a small cup it was also a bargain. This is probably the best coffee I've had in the area (Abana is good but it varies according to barista) so I will definitely be coming back here again. This place has been slow picking up but seems to be gathering a following now. I'm no marketing expert but I'd suggest they look at how they present themselves if they want to build their trade. Unlike the other new places in MLC that have very clear branding so you know exactly what they're offering, it took me a while to realise that this place was a coffee specialist. This needs to be a lot clearer.
