Review Yen's Vietnamese Restaurant - Sydney

Norm Lee
mediocre Viet food. If you're desperate for pho without travelling out west, this may suffice. Fried chicken servings were stingy. all 3 pieces were from different parts of a chicken. It was like other pieces were served to other people or had fallen off the plate.

Who says Pho isn’t for breakfast? A nice bowl of warm and hearty pho in a cold autumn morning it’s exactly what you need. The aroma and umami from the stock it’s better than coffee, and a good hangover cure too. For A$4 more, you could have Wagyu beef too, what a bargain! They have a raw or cooked beef option and the difference is serving the beef completely raw on the side vs serving the beef medium rare in the soup. I suggested to have cooked beef option since it was serve very medium rare so it won’t be over cooked and the problem with the raw beef option it’s that the bloods from the beef will contaminate the beautiful and clear broth (some people might like the gamy taste). Btw, great and friendly service for a small business.

Vietnamese restaurant that hits the spot. Fairly priced and quite authentic. They have free hot tea! Pho was standard, crispy chicken was also not too bad. Nothing much to complain, very satisfactory for a viet craving .

I’m very sad to be giving such a bad rating. Used to love Yens but my Uber delivery today was beyond disappointing. My pho was essentially a flavourless broth, no sauces (despite make a point to request them with the order), a couple of pieces of dry meat. Tastes like … nothing.

I’ve been coming here for 10 years, and tonight was the last time. The pho was big bowl of tasteless broth, stingy on the noodles and with barely any beef. I left hungry because it was basically all water. Won’t be back again.
David Maddison
The rice paper rolls are so fresh and we were even given our own dishes of dipping sauce! Friendly service and the bowls of bun are huge! These guys don’t skimp out on the meat or spring rolls. In true Vietnamese fashion, the table also overflows with condiments. They only accept cash but you can get cash out at IGA just two stores up

I’ve been coming to Yen’s since 2013. When you dined in, you were always looked after by a mother and daughter. It was busy and sometimes you would need to wait 30min to get a table. I knew there was some sort of management change about 18 months ago but I still semi regularly came. Sadly over time the food and service just got worse and worse. Today was the last straw. My Pho was thin, salty and bland and as you can see in my photo the beef portion was pathetic. I brought up the beef portion size and I was told “beef is expensive and everyone received the same amount” Honestly don’t waste your money. This used to be a well respected establishment and if you look at a bunch of recent reviews many mention similar issues. What a shame.

Had lunch with work mates here. The chicken curry tastes just like my mom used to make (I’m Viet). So much nostalgia in one bowl. Portion is very big. Taste is authentic homemade Vietnamese. Very satisfied and highly recommended.

Good pho with a more flavoursome soup than most and good rare beef, although it cooked quickly in the hot soup. It would be great pho at a moderate price but they were pretty stingy with any of the ingredients except noodles and broth.

Yen’s has been our all time favorite Vietnamese restaurant, we always order delivery food from them. But after a while we came back today for dinner and just wondering if they have changed their operation because the food and service just horrible. Beef noodles just acceptable but the soup just completely different compared with the one we had before. And their sweet and sour pork so disgusting just overcooked, super dry and not even fresh cooked. We can’t even eat the second piece just brought it to the owner and they so snobby just said that’s how they cooked, Oz style not Vietnamese’s style and they cooked lean pork that why it’s dry, excuse me are you kidding me. Definitely this is gonna be the last time for me.

Good value

There are many flies in the restaurant. The food may be contaminated. The mixed seafood contains only one prawn, one fish ball separated into two slices, and several slices of squids. I hate the onion and shiitake. They are not worth $12!!!

So friendly and so sweet service. They even have a low carb pho!!! Made my day. Going to be a regular now 🍲.Your review needs to be at least 140 characters long.

The pho at Yen's is honestly some of the best pho I've had, unfortunately the last couple of times I've come to Yen's the combination fried rice has been extremely salty to the point of it being almost inedible which is a shame because it used to be really good. The ambience is a bit lackluster and I feel like this could be improved with maybe some light music playing. Will keep coming back but probably will only order pho.

We have been eating at Yen’s for many years their pho is the best. Very disappointed with the chicken and vegetables stir fry rice noodle. They use tinned corn which has weird taste. The chicken was cooked before then they threw it into the stir fry the last second so the chicken has no flavour at all! The home sauce with ginger is very watery too has no flavour. We also had other dishes but not that good neither. Can’t believe they still accept cash only and the food is not worth the price.

I work around the corner and find Yen's to be a cheap, tasty and quick option for lunch. Always busy, it has a low-key vibe that I love - reminds me of some of the street food joints in Vietnam! I really like it because they provide many vegetarian and vegan options, complete with a vegan fish sauce substitute. I enjoy supporting this friendly, family run business. I recommend the vermicelli noodle salad with vegetarian spring rolls!

Great little hole in the wall place in Waterloo. Newly renovated but still the same vibe and prices. The pho is always reliable and tasty. Cash only!

Yen’s is a hole in the wall Vietnamese diner, tucked away in Redfern. It is always busy and the service was fast and friendly. Unfortunately my tofu and vege soup was so sweet that by the end it was equivalent to drinking a hot chocolate. A shame because aside from that it was full of flavour and had lots of chunky vegetables.

Sorry I really don't like giving bad reviews but what i ordered was really gross. I ordered via foodora. The order came quick. But it was the wrong order. I ate it anyway because it was still a vegetarian dish. They forgot the noodles, but the worst thing was the vegetables!! They threw in gigantic peices of carrot / mushroom / bukchoy!!! Yuck. Who wants to eat a whole bukchoy?!!!!! It's a soup?!!!! Photos attached see for yourself. I think I'm done with foodora now 😅

I have Oder and will pick up but wen I got there is no my Oder ready I’m so disappointed and there tell me will do it now but I can’t wait that’s why I Oder and pick !

也许是我期待太高了,越南老奶奶老板态度很冷漠,英语也是不太好~口味偏咸~午餐菜单也与Zomato 上的不一样。店面一般,价钱和分量也是还算合理。stir fry beef and veggies add tomato rice中有很多很多蔬菜,house made sauce就是黑椒味的

This small Vietnamese eatery is located away from all the cool areas in the city but it’s worth making a detour (which can be justified by having gelato at Ciccone and Sons for dessert). Every time we’ve come on Monday night for a pre-meditation bowl of soup it’s been packed, which is always a good sign. The food is BBB (bueno, bonito y barato), generous in size, and consistently good. The tables are always stocked with the mandatory sauces, fresh chilli, tissues and a flask of hot tea that gets promptly replaced when needed.

Yen's is a massively underrated restaurant in Redfern which offers a wide assortment of classical Vietnamese dishes ranging from pho to chicken noodles.

I ordered their signature crispy skin chicken noodles, deep fried chicken spring rolls and chicken pho for dinner. For once, I have found a worthy competitor to Tan Viet. The noodles were springy and the crispy chicken was well marinated and delectable. It was a pity the condiments and sauces did not match the noodles.

The spring rolls were straight forward and tasty. Crispy on the outside and juicy inside, the spring rolls were not excessively fried and remained firm and sturdy even after a few hours.

The chicken pho was not too bad. The chicken was tender and juicy but the pho could be even tastier with a better and flavourful broth. Added plus: No MSG used in the dishes.
Ruby Nguyen
The food is amazing. Authentic Vietnamese food, service is good. 4.5 because the restaurant is a bit dark and small. Overall, totally worth it to pay a few more dollars for such great meal.

Worst take away in Redfern, look very dirty in and out , kitchen is filthy, unhygienic, very high priced and price up for a pho ( beef noodle soup ) from $12 jumped to $15. This take away seriously need a facelift renovation or just shut down . I wonder why people not complain . May be because no competition around it . Best pho in Newtown max $9.. vermicelli take away on Redfern st , big bowl of pho $10 with free bottle of mineral water but unfortunately open only lunch ( mon - fri ) . That's how yen's Vietnamese can rip people off . Need to be reported to the council & DFT ..

This place is a hole in the wall- deceptively ordinary from the outside, however some of the best Vietnamese Ive had. The menu has enough to suit everyone's dietary requirements for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. The ingredients are fresh, the menu is well priced and the service is speedy. Really warm family run business, with a huge amount of regulars that pop in- highly recommended. ** Dez loved the grilled sugar cane prawn **
Lunch Pie
Beautiful food. Taste sensation! Walking past, it looks nothing special but these guys show how you don't need fancy settings to have a good business. It all boils down to the food on offer. We had chicken and prawn rice paper rolls. Filled with generous amounts of filling, the addition of mint leaves inside really brought it to another level. We also had spring rolls which came served with more fresh mint which you wrap the roll inside and then dip into homemade peanut sauce. We both had beef Pho as mains. Again, this was pretty good. Amazing value and fast service. Would recommend

Don't rate. There was hardly any noodles in my pho and neither my bf or I liked the broth. Didn't come with bean sprouts or herbs. Have no idea how this got rated so highly. Madame nhu is way better in my opinion
Sugar.snatch
One of the best pho that I've tried in Sydney! They were super duper accommodating to our group of six, when they were extremely busy. Honestly, can't rave enough over the pho with rare waygu beef.. plus BYO is always a bonus.
Shailja Tewari-Sharma
Rice paper rolls were bland without the traditional crunch and herbs . Ordered papaya salad which was no match to even an average Thai papaya salad. Don't get me started on fried rice noodle could not finish them so did take away and even my son did not like it at home
Global Foodie & Filmy
I went there reading all the reviews and was totally let down. Starting with unhygienic table cleaning... To a very cold and abrupt hostess... Not a good start. I can tolerate a soup Nazi if the soup is good. Waited for the food. Rice paper rolls tough and chewy... Fried noodles really bad with no flavours. Seafood noodle soup was fresh but could not eat the noodles which were their in a lump and not many flavours. . Sorrrrrrrryyyyy but cannot recommend it. Very over rated on Zomato

This is my favourite pho in Sydney so far. Easily as good as most of the pho I ate in Vietnam.
One of my colleagues had a stir fry here and didn't rate it. I've never had anything except the various pho options. For me the regular beef pho tai is the best.

Great little hole in the wall type place, nothing special to look at but delicious food. Pho is great, the pork cutlet, pork claypot, chicken vermicelli are our other go-to dishes. Consistently good food. This is our local favourite. Don't forget to take cash!

A great place to visit, Great pho in a simple setting. I head here regurally with friends for a cheap and easy feed...... . ................

Awesome Vietnamese restaurant with a no-frills interior. The pho is good, as is the bun bo hue. I'm also a fan of the spring rolls and the tomato rice with crispy skin chicken.

Yen’s is a little hole in the wall, in Waterloo on Botany Road, brightly lit, and serving humble Vietnamese food. This time, we were sad that the old menus were gone with all the photos of the food. The table collectively decided to get phos, rather than share family-style plates. I remember from the time before, a very good selection of food.
P&K Tasty AF Adventures
Classic Viet style, fresh, authentic, loads of chilli & herbs..feels like some of the smaller blocks in Vietnam inside.

Great price for the amount you get! Highly recommended for a quick bite.

Get the summer rolls or beef pho✌️
Gabbys79
Wow what an absolute neighbourhood Gem :) we wanted to go Photown but found out it was closed on Monday nights so we came a cross Yen's. Lucky we did. In a bit of a dodgy end of town this shop is a Vietnamese no frills shop with limited seats. We were lucky to get a table but it gets quite busy. Order the fresh rolls omg they are amazing. We got various stir fries and rice but will be back for some noodle soups. Amazing food and super cheap
Skye Slisz
Great value for money and the food was very good. Large portions so no chance of leaving hungry. I had the chicken and prawn rice paper rolls to start and seafood noodle soup. Both courses were great. I'd definitely go back.

Anyone who has been to Vietnam knows you can not read a pho house by its decor. Great staff, broad menu but nothing beats their beef (and chicken) pho! Stir fried egg noodles with fresh chillie is also a game changer. 😋
Good pho , good noodles! Good times! What you see is what you get, but don't let the appearances deceive you! Staff super good! Will be back again !
Alison Pang
Unexpectedly great! Cheap and cheerful, don't let the somewhat dodgy appearance fool you. Pho was flavourful and crispy chicken was delicious.
Andrew Lomas
Dont let the looks from outside out you off. This place just seems like it is getting better. They serve the best Bun Bo Hue (Spicy vermicelli pork and lemongrass soup) but their Pho and other dishes are equally good.
Bad Table Manners
I had a taste of the soup – although it was tasty, I felt it was a bit too unami for a real beef broth.
1 Good Meal
Simple decor, great food. Highly recommend as cheap eat.

Great place to eat early. Don't come here after 8. This place is amazing except it unfortunately closes very early. 9pm on a Friday or Saturday and it stops serving - even if there are lines of people outside. Very disappointing. Worth it though if you are prepared to eat early.
Edehaas
Always a terrible eat in experience for me. Maybe I just haven't figured out how to fine here. I have to get the menu myself every time because nobody gives it to me if I sit down, then I always go to the counter to order because I wait forever for service. Which is fine. Tonight I stood there for 5 minutes before being served. I was the only one there. The guy just kept making rice paper rolls. No "one moment please" or any kind of acknowledgement. I waited over an hour here for food once - maybe 1.5 until they finally told me they were making the food. Half an hour later... Today I've waited half an hour already. Hardly anyone is eating their mains. The food is nice however. Definitely order take away. The fact it's cash only is also annoying.
Jack.power94
Really Good authentic Vietnamese. So delish! deffs go here, really cheap- good value for your money.
Yvonne
Best spring rolls in Sydney! Great community spirit from the owners, I really miss eating here since moving out of the area!
Essentialfood
Love Yens! Pho with beef or chicken are both great but salads, noodles and many of the starters are also worth a look in. Cheap, cheerful and generous.
Derwooblegie
Great local joint. Small, hole in the wall kinda place but authentic Vietnamese cuisine. I have been here on multiple occasions and take away as well. My favourite is the Pho (beef noodle soup) and Ban Xeo (crispy pancake) and crispy fried egg noodles. I have noticed that every other table orders the pork claypot - will try it next time.
If they get your order wrong, its probably because of language barriers. To me, that just means more authenticity in the food!
Panayoutap
HORRIBLE place!. This place gave the worst customer service ive ever experienced! My BF and I ordered the vietnamese salad, crispy skin chicken and noodle soup and shredded pork rice paper rolls. We waited 30 minutes for the rice paper rolls to come to us and when they did come, it wasnt great. The rice paper rolls were dry and flavourless and there was barely any pork! My BF got his vietnamese salad 10 mins later and it was mostly thinly sliced onions! and it looked nothing like a vietnamese salad! I waited another 10 minutes for my order and when they came to our table they gave us fried rice and noodle soup i didnt order. I told the lady this was the wrong order and confirmed it. She went back and I waited another 10 minutes. 10 minutes pass by and she comes to our table and gives me the wrong soup again! I told her again this the wrong order and told her what i ordered. 10 minutes pass and she gives me the wrong order AGAIN! I finally got the right order after that. The crispy skin chicken and noodles were decent. The chicken was dry and the soup was a bit lacking. I definitely will not go back and NOT recommend this restaurant!

Love it. Yen's is just around the corner from my house so I go there/get take away regularly. It is pretty "no frills" when it comes to atmosphere (being right on botany road!), but it has some seriously delicious food. The pancake (ban xeo) is a ripper. I love that they give you mint and lettuce just like in Vietnam for your spring rolls. The soups are pretty tasty. Pretty cheap though, although their prices are increasing on 15 August 13 because of food supply inflation pressures.
Jennie
Noodles soup is plain as water and isnt hot enough, small portion which i need to go for extra food in somewhere!!!!
Sassy
Really nice- low key. I like this local, family -run Vietnamese joint.
Cheap and cheerful, but be warned they might get your order mixed up as the owners speak little English. So we had to send food back due to miscommunication. When the food arrived it was super and super cheap!!
T_Cheng
Being a noodle soup addict I have eaten at a lot of Asian soup joints in Sydney and this place has got to have the best pho and chicken broths! Definitely recommended for pho or chicken noodle soups.

Hubby and I eat here regularly and apart from soups the grilled chicken, pork or chicken claypots, spring rolls, fried squid and banh xeo (pancake) are fabulous. Delicious food and cheap what more can you ask for!
Cameron Bryant
Awesome. This place is awesome! We had for lunch once or twice a week and are never disappointed. Get onto the chicken pho and beef vermicelli. Fresh spring rolls are also tasty.
Vicki Aspro
Love Love Love it. Friendly Service, Cheap & Cheerful, but best of all great food, love grabbing the fresh Chicken and Prawn spring rolls on the way passed...And when I need a good warm up I cannot go past the Chicken Pho!
Greedy
OK for the price. Not the best food I have ever had but the spring rolls, soup and crispy chicken are tasty and makes a cheap dinner. Better than similar priced chinese / thai joints but I wouldn't make it a regular place to eat.
Jordan
Ive actually had the chicken and curry coconut cream several times and it is quite delicious! It is not noodles in the dish it is actually bamboo shoots- if you dont know what your ordering then you should ask- yes the food sometimes does take a while to come- however its a given considering how busy they are and that there is only one cook- most people would say it is worth the wait
Mactuile
Terrible. I thought this would be a cheap and tasty local restaurant from reading the reviews. It could not have been worse. The Pho broth was tasteless water. It could not possibly have been prepared the proper way by brewing bones over a long period of time. The second dish three people ordered was absolutely nothing like the menu described. I would describe it as "peanuts with quelchy chicken and noodles". When the menu said "stir fried coconut curry chicken". I do not know where these restaurants find this squelchy, non fibrous chicken? The dish took 45 minutes to arrive. Avoid at all costs.
Elise
No need to travel to Cabramatta, this pho is the best I've tried! Silky noodles, tasty soup and tender beef. I'm addicted!
Johngreen
Best pho ever..... I've never had beef noodle soup as flavorful as this before it is hands down the best Pho i've ever had, the rice paper rolls are fantastic too. i'm not so fond of other items off this menu, few times i've ordered other things (the prawn cakes & beef cubes) i've been disappointed, i have had better of both elsewhere (specifically pho pastuer in parramatta)
Steve Jones
Excellent cheap and tasty Vietnamese food. Friendly owners too
Gavin S
Cheap and cheerful - the foo was very fresh and exactly the perfect take away for my Sunday eve! Rice paper rolls are delicious!
Stu83
AMAZING. Just wanted to say I loved our dinner last night so quick and easy for PHO at home! My special beef noodle soup was missing the extra bits though :( But all in all really yummy!!!
Allyburgo
Our favourite local cheap- eat. Tasty, dirt cheap and friendly!! Try the sweet and sour prawn soup and the pork claypot. YUM!!!
Corridor Kitchen
Understaffed but always tasty. This is a cheap, tasty family-run Vietnamese that I go to frequently. It is quite understaffed though and I've noticed more and more that people seem to be ordering over the phone in advance (to eat in), so you might sit down and think you're the only customer and there's actually a bunch of people ahead of you! That said the food is delicious and the tea is free. Try the Pho and the fried spring rolls, yum!
Jonathan Koay
Great find through Urbanspoon.. This place might look dodgy at first, but give it a chance and you'll discover one of most authentic "homestyle" Vietnamese food in Sydney.

Must try - pho and claypot pork.
Mh
Ok to average. Wouldn't rush back. The fried spring roles were great the rest not so.
Andrew Hassell
$8 pho as good as any you will get in Marrickville. Good value.
Gabriel Chang
We found this place through urban spoon and this place didn't dissapoint. Fast service, great tasting pho and I had it takeaway and still was so fresh. We should have more support for this restaurant. Definitely add this to one of my regular restaurants i'll visit
Lucky B
Best Kept Secret. This place definitely one of Sydney's best kept secrets - price is affordable and the food (especially the pho) is awesome.
Beef pho is a must try and the experience matches that of Pasteur in City. It has a home-made feeling which is definitely an additional plus for Yens.
CS
Decor was rather awful and dark, food turned out to be pretty good.. Had the special beef pho and it was above your avg pho. Worth a try.
Haden Hansen
Pretty much my favourite restaurant ever. I LOVE this place so much, yes the decor is awful but where else in Sydney can 5 people eat 6+ dishes for ~$50! Answer? NOWHERE! Try the grilled Lemongrass Chicken and the Pork hot pot, divine!
