Review Cafe Hernandez - Sydney

Jennifer C
Cute little cafe. Feels like you are in Europe. Thick hot chocolate was delicious and churros were fantastic - Fresh hot and crispy on the outside with a generous coating of sugar and soft on the inside (so much better than san churros!) 2 hot chocolates and 4 churros for $20 Let us know when horchata is back on the menu!

This coffee shop is truly a must-visit gem in Sydney! Stepping into this painting-clad space transports you to another world, a charming Spanish one where cafes are open till 1 or 2am! The coffee is great and so is the service. This is the perfect place to come, drink, enjoy and have a chat. No wifi at all, which is quite nice too! I’ll definitely be coming back in the evening!

Felt like home. The coffee was good and food was pleasant to eat. You can pick a bean of your choice and this family owned cafe will not disappoint you.

Best coffee and they roast their own beans you can get your own special blend 😋 👍❤

As of Nov 1st, 2019 this place is open continuously from Friday mornings at 6am until Midnight Sunday. Because of the way Google posts opening times (anything after midnight is considered the following day) it looks like it closes on Friday at midnight. This is not the case. It’s open all night Friday, i.e. in the wee hours of Saturday morning, and all night Saturday night (i.e. in the wee hour of Sunday morning) Now for my review: this place an institution in the Sydney coffee scene. As the place that never sleeps you used to be able to come here any time of the day or night for a coffee. Recently their all-night hours have changed (I imagine due to lockout laws), but there are still a couple of nights (Fri/Sat) that they don’t close, so it’s still THE place for nocturnal artists, insomniacs and urban shift workers.

Very charming bohemian coffee shop where you can buy your own freshly roasted coffee beans on site as well as enjoying a cupa of the house blend or a choice of different origins, coffee is excellent! Must try the Spanish omelette!

Loved the place! Good coffee and really good bakings. The atmosphere here is definitely something to experience.

Like a few places around the area they roast their beans on site and there is a lovely old world charm about this place that is a serenade to the history of this almost 50 year old institution.

Coffee : 😍 Amazing <br/>Hot Chocolate : 😍 Amazing <br/>Service : 😍 Amazing <br/><br/>Opened at crazy hours, Cafe Hernandez always has customers sipping on their infamous coffee. I walked in to get some for takeaway and the coffee didn’t disappoint. It was strong and bold just the way I like it. The hot chocolate was so creamy and smooth like velvet. I’ll admit it is quite pricy but I think it was worth it.

Amazing coffee sourced globally. This tight home style cafe has one of the best coffees I’ve ever had. Busy form early in the morning until very late at night, it’s perfect coffee for anytime of the day. Kind and quick service.

Open 24hrs it seems so its convenient that you can get coffee most hours in the day but I find different bsristas can be hit and miss.<br/>They can grind coffee for you to take home and can grind whatever courseness you require and they have several types of coffee, some of which are nice.

Just walked out. Been coming here for 25 years but between the old lady who parks her laptop in the window seat all afternoon (then goes outside and sits with her friends) and the "reserved" sign permanently on another table, they don't seem to want or need any more regulars. Know the owner - lovely guy, great coffee, interesting snacks... if you can get a table before the squatters move in.

I enjoyed my visit here. The food me and my friends ordered were okay, service was decent. However, this cafe wins with the rustic ambiance and the fact that it is open 24 hours. Not a lot of places in Sydney are open 24 hours (at least ones that I know of). Overall, this is a good place to head to any time of the day to hang out and catch up with friends and I would definitely be going back.

This place was absolutely wonderful. The food was great. Portion sizes are huge and you get a lot for your money. The prices are just right. Not overly expensive. I get to use my Liven App and got $50 bonus.Great food, great environment, great service, and great prices. Can't wait to visit again.

I installed a new app into my iPhone called Liven where Restaurants and cafes  join so they are showcased. I saw this cafe I liked close by and decided to try them out and and have my Sunday breakfast there. When you pay your bill with the app you also receive a 25% discount.  However, when it come time to pay I presented the app with my bill number A2 as indicated,  but the owner and staff did not know how to use the tablet they were supplied by to settle my account.  I could see the tablet was on the wall, but what I considered was in a abrupt manner the owner said they don't have time to deal with this.  I was then required to pay by regular EFTPOS (without the  discount). There was no apology,  I just felt I am taking up their valuable time .  So I thought it would be worthwhile to give them my review (in my valuable time) and advise I have chosen a new location for my Sunday breakfast.  In the time I sat there, I did watch the nature of the customer service and I truly got the opinion that the woman servicing that morning may have previously worked in a bureaucratic office (say in government), and has now possibly started in this cafe in her retirement and has yet to fully adapt the friendly and warm empathy skills required in hospitality. I hardly saw a smile from her.

The hot chocolate !!! And a 2 am craving .. 2 winners for cafe Hernandez . The churros were really fresh and while the hot chocolate was a bit different, intense and clumpy in texture , it completely did it for me. However my friend was a bit uncertain whether he liked it or not as it wasn't frothy and milky like those provided by many other cafes. The ambience was very European and artsy. Definitely recommend this place particularly for a date night !

Exactly the place you want at 2am-4am in the morning for Spanish hot chocolate and Churros.<br/>24hrs...<br/>"Thick Spanish Hot Chocolate with 2 Churro thanks"...<br/>Once you try this you will crave it!<br/><br/>On the odd occasions the "thick" isn't so thick... but its always still good!<br/>The coffee beans are great also, grab a bag and take them home after you have had the hot chocolate...<br/><br/># Spanish Hot Chocolate w/Churro.<br/># City Chocolate Churro Cafe Craving Crazy Clock Condition...

...the popularity, charm and quality of Cafe Hernandez as a whole ensures that customers return, as I will. Though next time I will be set out to try the now mythical and possibly the most ‘hyped up’ hot chocolate around and I have a feeling it will be worth it!

It's in the middle of nowhere, and the food is average - I had a friand, the pancakes may be better - but you get heaps of coffee choices. Cafe Hernandez is famous for is beans variety. If ever looking for a quiet late night haunt, you should give this place a try.

This cafe is an institution. It has been in the area for ages, and although the dark burgundy and wood decor looks like it has not been changed in that same period, it’s part of its charm. We sat on the sloping pavement. Again part of the charm. The coffee served here is first rate – their own blend. The cakes were fresh and invitingly displayed. My pistachio friand was moist and the size of the croissant with my companion was substantial. Rates for a good fress. I will be back – and sooner than the 20 years since I ate there. The café that never sleeps is famous for being open all the time and being a little quirky. Being in a short walk from the Cross, it is perfect for a late night espresso or a hot chocolate prior to heading home. But is great to visit anytime, really!!

Situated on the outskirts of Kings Cross on a sloping pathway this small coffee shop is open 24 hours all year round and has been in business since 1972. There's quite a few specialist coffee beans to choose from and the pokey seating arrangement inside w

Late night sanctuary. This place is a diamond in the rough. I have had the best mocha of my life here and the churros are perfect fuel for pulling those late study nights when being at home seems unbearable.

Went to Cafe Hernandez for breakfast after searching for a long time to find breakfast churros outside Spain. The churros were freshly made and the hot chocolate was authentic Spanish hot chocolate, perfect for dipping.<br/><br/>Cafe Hernandez has a personal feel and is very reasonably priced. would definitely recommend it for churros!

Real shame, used to love it. Real shame - great place but beware of older gentleman who either works there or owns the place (Mr Hernandez perhaps??)<br/><br/>I used to love this place, would go there at least twice a week. Coffee is good, hot chocolate as well, their empanadas are great and the service is friendly.<br/><br/>Today I had the most bizarre experience though. I was working on a presentation I have for Monday, I had plugged in my laptop (on a prior occasion I had asked staff if I could use it and they were fine with it). An older gentleman who I believe is the owner told me I couldn't use the power point.<br/><br/>I need to be clear here - that is totally fine. I get it, I don't agree with it, but I get it. Some establishments want to churn customers. That's fine. I apologised, told him I meant no offence and removed the power.<br/><br/>The guy kept harping on though about the cost of my coffee versus the power, that the power point was a private area etc. - I said look, I'm not sure what else you want from me, I have apologised, removed the power point and made it clear I meant no offence. He kept harping on though and I just said look, if you want me to take my business elsewhere just say so. He said yes, please take it elsewhere.<br/><br/>I said fine, I went up to the counter, the younger gentleman there apologised, said 80 year olds can get a bit cranky. I said that's fine, paid for my coffee and hot chocolate, thanked him and left him a tip.<br/><br/>I've now moved to a shop around the corner and am having tea. Looks like a perfectly suitable place to finish my presentation from. I suspect this will be my new coffee shop of choice.<br/><br/>Real shame because I really liked Hernandez but I have no bandwidth to deal with that older gentleman's issues.

Decent hot choc (although made on powder). Service a bit snooty. Must come back and try self-roasted coffee before finalising review!

Great coffee bean variety, freshly roasted in the restaurant. This cafe is a really nice place for having a coffee that is not just A coffee but rather THE coffee. you can choose out of approximately 10 different espresso beans, differently roasted etc. no matter if you desire a mild or really strong coffee, you"ll find your match at this place. <br/><br/>the atmosphere is really nice and invites you to stay longer, even though it is not too spacious (gets packed quickly at times) and despite the chairs not being very comfy.<br/><br/>they do not offer lots of mains, but do have an average selection of sweets/cakes/cookies/croissants. so far the cinnamon bun is my fav. they do have some strudel-like cake, which is literally very sweet and therefore not recommended for not-to-sweet-teeth. <br/><br/>despite the sandwiches and churros (spanish style donuts, usually served with thick hot chocolate) not being fresh, this place is worth visiting mainly for the coffee = outlook (drawings of the owners wife all over the place!).
