Visited for lunch on Thursday 3rd March. I walked in off the street and was fascinated by this unique pub. Quirky interior decor and friendly happy staff make this an ideal place to have a meal and drink a few beers. I had a chilli sauce squid , which was delightful and my friend ate a brisket meat pie which was perfect. I will return. You must visit this pub !!!

Great staff, delicious food. So many tasty vegetarian options! I wasn’t mad on the cocktail but I think that’s just personal taste! Defo worth a visit if you’re in Surry hills!
Michael Pillay
Great range of craft beers and the house hazy was outstanding. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the overall vibe is excellent, with indoor, semi- outdoor and street seating.
My only area for improvement was the food, which was adequate bit not overly impressive for the price.
Recommend? Hell yeah, but more for the craft beer than the food.
Megan Chard
One of my favourite pubs in Surry Hills. Great selection of rotating craft beer on tap. The food is is pretty good as well, typical pub food but also some dumplings available
Geoff Cutler
Cute little historic pub in Surrey Hills. I went here after a murder mystery walking tour through the inner city. Good drinks on tap and some awesome food options. Staff were friendly at the bar.

I accidentally came across the Royal Albert Hotel while I was out in Surry Hills the other weekend and didn't expect my night to be so great after a bad day. A big shout out to the bartender, Jenny, who went the extra mile to make sure my friends and I had a great experience. Not only did she make a killer cocktail, but she was always smiling, super friendly, and an absolute gem. I would go back there JUST for her incredible service.
Thimira Gunasekera
Gone so so downhill from a few years ago. Dry flavourless meat, cold cheese, just a very sad burger. And they have the audacity to increase the price to 20!
Christine Gordon
Wanted a quiet drink with a couple of friends in Surry Hills while on a visit to Sydney. Other pubs in the area were nuts busy and really noisy because it was game night. Found this little neighbourhood pub and it was exactly what I was looking for. Friendly staff, very pleasant house sauv blanc, and lovely vibe. This is a gem of a pub.
Mitch Ransley
Lovely waitress, nice wine, but food was not good. Spicy pork Szechuan noodles came out as Spag Bol noodles, minced dry pork, few veg, that tasted like it had been splashed with some hot sauce. Nothing Asian about the dish at all.

Best bar for craft beer bar in Sydney. The regular Thursday tap takeovers are always worth attending, and it's also great to see well curated shelves of Australian distilleries behind the bar. Excellent food, with their signature Royale with Cheese being one of the best burgers in Sydney.
Allan Cooper
Each visit from LA I find my way to this gem. The perfect mix of locals and businessmen, unpretentious attitudes with a fine appreciation of craft beers at their best. Solid burger menu that doesn't disappoint, with an unexpected and excellent dumpling menu. It won't disappoint, still has the genuine feel of old school Sydney in the best of ways,
Dave Lowe
Prices for food are higher than their web site menu states and not a lot of food for the price. Happy hour does not include beer (strange for a pub that trades on its beer selection)....
William A Wilson
One of the best ranges of and best looked after craft beer in Australia plus local spirits. Great, knowledgeable staff, quality burgers and dumplings. Don't miss it
Campbell Nicol
Very chill place with nice staff and good bevs. $1 dumplings on a Sunday is amazing. My mum had her first ever dumplings here, also got a lil drunk. Good one mum.
Anita Phillips-Jessup
Wish we could clone this place and ship it to the coast. The friendly staff and patrons. Brilliant selection of beers and wine, felt so relaxed and will be back.
Anne Moss
Great pub for a party. I had 80 friends at my party and it was perfect. Everyone loved the food. Staff very friendly, accomodating and helpful. Highly recommended for a party or just a dumpling dinner!
Mark Williams
Such a great friendly venue. And the beer is always exciting and fresh! Plus the burgers....mmmmm
Chris Pinfold
Great little pub. Large range of craft beers on tap including two hand pump ales.
Jono Outred
Good beer list and killer dumplings. Assume all house made, really impressive. Cool spot!
Anna-Marie Kusiak
Hands down the best pub in Sydney!! Amazing burgers, awesome craft beer. Go check it out, you won't regret it
Nicola Clement
Love this place, definitely my favourite place to drink. Love the tap takeovers!
LeAnn Fetzek Lisana
Love this place! Cozy, old, charming with beautiful staff!
Chris Mendes
One of my favourite pubs. Best selection of craft beers around. Always has a stout or dark ale and a great cider.
You can take a can home that they pour and seal at the pub!
Food is great! Chips with chilli sauce, burgers, dumplings. Yummy!
And...staggering distance from home.
Kathleen Davies
Awesome place, great range of local craft beers and craft spirits. The staff are very friendly too
Mikey Allen
Cracking beers. Awesome burgers and always rad tunes.
James Davey
Quite simply the best craft beer venue in Sydney, hands down.
Rapee Gibson
Great local pub, craft beer and yummy pecking duck.
Riley Clement
First time at Royal Albert. Beer selection was great. One for the craft beer nerds who like their beers big and bold. Dumplings were delicious and a good change from the american cuisine that seems to be the standard fare at craft beer venues. The owner Michael is clearly passionate about craft beer and was a source of good conversation. Will look forward to coming again when visiting sydney.
Josh Nicholson
What a place, had a great chat to Mike about brews and the scene. Too place for any hop heads or malt maniacs. Will return. Cheers lads!
Andrew Scott
Best burgers in town. Awesome brews. I am usually there every Thursday for a tap takeover.
John Innes
Just a good old fashioned local pub..whats not to like
Andrew Hawker
Great selection of craft beers and dumplings.
Tom Pigott
Knowledgeable and friendly staff, great beer selection AND Starward is there house whisky???? AMAZING
Nicholas Loker
Is good sheit

I want to be inside you all day long! After experiencing so much mediocrity as a first time visitor to Surry Hills and a very rare traveller to Sydney, this WILL become a regular stop in old Sydney from here on in! Great pub, great booze! Very well done....
Shane Hooks
Just go there. Don't know why i need 50 words. Just go there.
Neil Barnett
Everything you need under one roof. Great beer, food and staff. A winning combination!!
Hugh Raper
Great service. Fell in love. If you have the pleasure of going here, please ask to speak to claudia, she will value you for the real you. I request that she recieves a pay rise for changing not only my life, but everyones around me for the better whilst still doing her job.

Great beers, great staff, quality Aussie pub!
Dominic Svensson
Nice small old pub with an interesting beer selection. The food's mostly expensive-looking pub food (like $19 pies from Broomfields - I’ve had them elsewhere and wouldn’t pay that much) and expensive mediocre dumplings from Bamboo.

2nd time back at royal albert because I loved my first time here. This time was a little bit disappointing because I hyped myself up too much. I would say that their fries are always going to be good; sweet potato (if you get their pies) or crinkle cut (if you get their burgers), they're still delicious as ever. The southern fried cauliflower dog was also a good vegetarian idea for a hotdog, but I do think it needed more sauce because that sauce was good! Thankfully they handed out wooden boxes with all diff kinds of sauces you could think off.

The broccolini burger was dissapointing. Don't get me wrong, the patty was great! Who ever thought of a broccolini burger, props to that man who came up with it. The extremely dissapointing part was the buns. Being the bread fiend that I am, that was the driest bread I've ever had to get outside. Either they ran out of fresh buns or this one had been sitting for a while, I do not know why I had to drown it in sauce to make it worthwhile but after a while I found it was better to just eat the patty and surrender the carbs. Next time: stick with the pies.

Great location, quirky old pub with some great craft beers... but the service was very disappointing, staff were indifferent and not very hospitable... on top of that the food was below average .and I would eat there again !
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
It's the holy trinity - A pub with an expansive choice of craft beers, great food and table service! Spicy wings, crinkle cut chips with curry and hearty, wholesome handcrafted Broomfield pies, plus sweet potato fries and gravy that are out of this world good.
Fat Boi
Great selection of beers, good menu and very helpful, friendly staff. I don’t know how it took me so long to find it but I know I’ll be back. $5 schooners of beer that’s actually good during happy hour.
Andy Quan
I was first impressed that you could get dumplings from next door, even though I do want to try the vaunted burgers. I also love that they have cocktails on tap, and had something light and refreshing the time we were there for dumplings. The next time I was there the cocktail selections were an espresso martini and some other very heavy drink. We opted for negronis... and I have to advise: a negroni with white vermouth instead of red vermouth is... not a negroni. It was also really crowded and noisy. A fun vibe for young hipsters, but didn't really suit us oldies that night.
Lunch Pie
I can only describe the burgers as SENSATIONAL! Epically juicy and utterly delicious. I ordered the Double Royale with bacon and cheese. It was huge! Ended up sharing it. Decent beers here and staff are also lovely. Proper pub. Will be back!
Michael Bain
Great pub with the best beer list in town. Coffee martini on tap is also a must try as is the Royale with cheese spicy with bacon. Tell your friends
Genevieve Emma Louise Pearl
The classic royale with Cheese is mouthwatering but i've recently discovered their new Asian summer menu and its incredible. The highlight has to be the Thai style lime juice and black pepper chicken salad. And with 14 taps of rotating craft beer i don't know why you would eat anywhere else? Love this joint.
The City Lane
Royal Albert Hotel has built a reputation as one of Sydney’s premier craft beer destinations since a shift in focus in 2012. While the craft beer part of the pub’s offering might be relatively recent, the pub itself is not.
Lifelovetravelfood
Great pub! Really good selection of craft beer which always gets my husband's tick of approval! I liked that they had a bar and two dining areas as we were dining with a pram so appreciated the extra space!

We started with the dumpling plate which was nice but nothing amazing. I also wish they'd told us which dumpling was which rather than us having to guess. Not the best dumplings I've ever had but not terrible either.

Burgers were yum! My husband had the soft shell crab burger which was really good but quite light and not overly filling. I had the double royale with cheese and bacon and this one won in the taste stakes. Could have been a bit juicier but it was good. Chips were disappointing - tasted like they were frozen premade.

Overall a yum spot with great beers and friendly staff, just not the best food I've had
The RnB Diary
If you are a craft beer lover, you probably will enjoy this pub. It is not big in contrast to the pubs on Crown or Devonshire streets. It is more a next door pub frequented by locals. Food menu ranges from american burgers and hotdogs to paisan dumplings, chef must be "jack of all trades". There is a large selection of craft beer on tap, I saw people sitting at the bar doing tasting. Staff are very friendly and happy to chat away with patrons. As it is only a tiny drinking hole, it feels a lot more intimate, friendly, and chilled.
The Burger Hand
Royal Albert Hotel was one of the pubs I used to frequent for burgers before the recent Sydney Burger Renaissance the past two years or so. It had been a while since I've been, so I decided to go for Super Bowl Monday and had the Double Royale with Cheese & Bacon.

Two beef patties, tasty cheese, bacon, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and sriracha mayo.

This burger has potential, but due to a few niggling factors it's an OK burger at best. The beef was decent quality but overcooked and not seasoned very well, resulting in blase patties. If they were done medium rare and seasoned better this patty would be great. The bun is brioche, which is a bun I abhor. To it's credit, it held up well to the contents and gave the patties an extra dimension of taste due to its sweetness. The toppings were awesome, couldn't ask for more with the McClure's pickles (Detroit, represent) the sriracha mayo and the bacon which helped flavour the otherwise flavourless patties.

Beef: 2.5

Bun: 2.5

Toppings: 4.3

Overall: 3.1/5

Ok let me start my saying I am completely biased about this pub. It is my favourite pub in Sydney due to its warm hospitality and the love of the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs displayed in the pub with framed jerseys. This place is where I first sampled craft beer and it holds many great memories. The food is pretty fine too. You have the choice of Asian from the Bamboo Dumpling place connected to the back of the pub and you cannot go past the Shanghai Soup dumplings. I sometimes just come and order a few servings of those alone. I pretty much love all their food at Bamboo except for the lemongrass beef dumpling but that is just me. Now to the dude food. The Royale with cheese is their most well known burger and it is pretty sensational however I recently discovered the Albert cheeseburger and fell in love. An American style cheeseburger with is simple but delicious. Yet to try their hotdog range but they look tasty. The pulled pork burger is a favourite of one of my good friends, she pretty much orders it every time we eat here. Great supporter of the booming Australian love of craft beer and craft spirits.

Found this place on the fatties burger appreciation society page and stoked that it was on there. Tiny little old Victorian style pub with a few locals. I was warmly greeted by the waitress and I believe she could feel my anticipation of my eagerness to get into one of their burgers. She said her favourite was the cheeseburger which led to much contention between her colleagues but she said the Royale was the most popular. I went with the crowd favourite of the Royale with the hot mustard sauce. On the burgers arrival I was greeted with a mouth watering delight. Good size burger with the meatiest of patties, complimented nicely with cheese. salad and a crispy sweet bun. I think what really takes it over the line is the tangy mustard orange sauce.
The chips were a great side but as I had barely breathed in devouring the burger there sadly wasn't any room for the chips. Great burger place in the heart of the city
Princess_Porky
I'll state right up front that I did not drink here. Yes I know it's a pub but I'd heard good things about their burgers so I went for the food. Ordered the double royale with bacon and cheese, the chicken katsu with asian sesame slaw and the buffalo wings. The beef burger was requested medium rare but came out well done. Was slightly on the bland side. Wasn't too overwhelmed with this. The chicken katsu burger was just ok in my opinion but my partner thoroughly enjoyed it. We both concluded that the hot wings were ordinary. Overall, not bad but certainly not good either. Again, this is just the food. I know they're well known for their craft beer so I'm certainly not rating that. The service was good and the place had a great vibe. I will return to try the dumpling bar out the back area.

Very nice. Great feel. Friendly staff. Lots on offer. Recommend the Katsu Chicken burger - delicious!
Oh Burger Me
Why this place? She says : We have had a couple of people leave comments and send us emails about this one (shout out to Enrico particularly!). I realised once we turned up that I had eaten some dumplings out the back previously and was pleasantly surprised by the contrast between my previous experience and this one. He says: This had been running around my head as a place to chow down on burgers for some time. The photos I’d seen looked on the delicious side and the location fitted in perfectly with our plans for the remainder of the day. What did you order? Royale with cheese, double patty, streaky bacon and fries: $16.50 (bacon $2.50) Chicken Katsu Burger with fries: $14 Tell us about the Royale with cheese? He says: In a show of beauty and selflessness the wonderful She informed me that she didn’t mind if we went for a double patty today (which is not so much her thing but most definitely mine). This was a decent little burger but with just a little bit of tinkering and care could have lifted it’s level big time. The patties had a great flavour to them but were overcooked to buggery. The bun also seemed a little stale, the cheese could have afforded to have been melted and there must have been a pickle scarcity in the kitchen that day because the quarter one we got was nothing like the whole ones I’d seen in all the pictures. In saying that the although overcooked but undeniably tasty patty was a perfect match to sensational special sauce and the addition of streaky bacon soothed my stomach and soul. She says: It really was an act of charity to agree to the double patty, He is right. One may think that a two patty burger easily becomes a single patty burger of just as high quality when one paddy is removed but one would be wrong because one would forget the amount of cheese and sauce the second patty takes with it. I did keep that in mind though and was willing to be kind to this burger on that basis. Big stand-outs for me in this burger were the pickles

140 Commonwealth Street Surry Hills NSW 2010 While visiting Sydney for work, a friend from school, Neil suggested meeting up at the Royal Albert Hotel on the corner of Commonwealth and Reservoir streets in Surry Hills. It looks like a classic Sydney Hotel from outside and inside plenty of traditional touches remain. The bar taps though, with their selection of craft beers and distinct absence of modern Aussie standard brews are amongst the clues of recent changes. We didn't venture into the Bamboo Dumpling Bar, but did sample the Young Henrys Real Ale, which reminded me of the UK beer in a good way, and very appropriate for the occasion. I decided to take a look at the burger menu, and decided on the soft shell crab. After a short wait it arrived with its asian 'slaw and wasabi mayo. The serve of crab was generous and the flavours worked nicely. The crinkle cut chips came with a red sauce, which in the dim light could have been tomato, fortunately I was warned about the spicy chilli before dipping! A little later Neil went for the spiced up Royale with cheese featuring a Jalapeno mustard! The burgers were around the $16 mark, and perhaps took a little longer than I'd expected to arrive, although the re were a good number of orders from the bar area, along with a reasonably busy sounding dumplings section. The bar staff were friendly and the vibe relaxed. The Royal Albert lives up to its billing as a crafty little corner joint and is well worth seeking out for the burgers as well as the beers.

I've got love for Royal Albert. I'll be honest; the food isn't life changing but it's certainly good. Everyone knows that Royal Albert Hotel has an awesome selection of craft beers. This, paired with a menu of burgers, hot dogs & dumplings makes for a very solid evening. Add chocolate spring rolls and ice cream dumplings to the mix and for a local, it's pretty damn unbeatable.
The City Lane
I’d heard good things about the Royal Albert Hotel but never had the opportunity to visit until my most recent visit to Sydney. The place has been around since 1927, and today is home to some of the best craft beer in Sydney across its 14 taps.
Sydney Pub List
Pull up a seat in the front bar of this Surry Hills hideaway and order one of their tasty beers. There's a good selection available here, including a couple of 'hand pump' brews. The hotel has stood unpretenciously here for many years, playing home to the workers who moved into the area in the early part of the twentieth century and continued to serve the locals until this day.

Obviously taking it's name from Pulp Fiction, the burger reminded me of what that movie's "Big Kahuna Burger" looked like and (may have) tasted like. Basically, it was one nasty little greaseball! No beating around the bush, the burger was tasty.
