Always a favourite. Great coffee, great breakfasts. Love the open air courtyard out the back to escape the bustle of King st. While some weekends it can get quite crowded, I've never failed to get a table. Recommended!

The spaghetti with fetta cheese & tomato was excellent. Their menu has a wide selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner- all available anytime. They also have fresh pressed juice. It has a cosy ambience with friendly service on the main Newtown strip. A+

Great food, cool music and vibe. I had the big breakfast and it was everything I needed and at a good price. All day brekky!!

Had my chicken risotto today and it was delicious! Service was good and didn't wait long for my lunch! I love the combination with mushrooms and olives!

Great relaxed environment. Food is really nice, and easy on the pocket too. They have a court yard, accommodate smokers. I've been here many times over the years, breakfast, lunch, and in the past, dinner. Although I don't think they open for dinner service anymore, you can't go wrong.
Give this place a shot, you won't be disappointed.

This lovely cafe is a favourite for our whole family. The food is always outstanding and the staff are friendly and helpful. There's a great outdoor area out the back with plenty of seating if you're keen for fresh air without sitting out on the footpath, as well as lots of tables indoors. They also do quite good coffee and smoothies.

Good solid old style cafe. We had the salmon omelette (a little dry but still good)and pesto eggs which were tasty. The coffee was really good.

Fantastic little cafe with a really broad selection of food.
Some great lactose and gluten free options available.
The staff were lovely.
We ordered the social pumpkin risotto to share and the chef even split it into two servings. It's the small things like this that matter.
It was raining and cold outside, but inside was lovely and warm.
Prices are reasonable, possibly on the expensive side, $16 or so for some salads and bruschetta etc.prices ranged from about $7 to $25 or so. Many of the meals are around the $16 price.
Would definitely recommend, they have an outdoor area out the back too! Perfect for larger groups of 10 or so.
Probably about 4.5/5. Only draw back is some of the prices; but do appreciate rent is expensive in this area.

Lou Jack's was never fancy but was a bit of a standard-setter 20 years ago when it opened. Problem is, everyone else has improved since then and Lou Jack's hasn't. Service is woeful - staff take a very long time to take orders and a very long time to clear tables. Food is fairly normal (haloumi was rare 20 years ago but now it's not enough on its own to make an interesting breakfast) but my eggs, bread and bacon were all undercooked. Prices may be slightly high for food considering the ordinary quality. The coffee though is an astonishing $4.30 - it's rich and strong but a little bitter and that price is so far above the Newtown average that it would need to be the best coffee around to justify it.

This place is there best, Sandy and George are gentlemen. I've been coming to this establishment for some time, and I'm never let down.

Ambience: Warm, friendly and relaxed

Food: Outstanding, there isn't anything on the menu, including made to order dishes that you wouldn't eat, love the lot

Price: Absolute value for money

Do yourself a favour and give this place a try, you'll be back.

My favorite coffee in Newtown! Decent food with excellent portion sizes, too, but the coffee is the real draw. They also do a nice Greek coffee.

Great location but its simple... the food is average. the coffee isnt great.Lou Jacks is fairly unpretentious with no particular theme to the décor. its okay for overall but not all that

We had a quick lunch here and were less than impressed with service and menu. There are much better places around even in this section of King Street.

Amazing food and service. Have been a regular at Lou Jacks for breakfast / coffee for a number of years and decided tonight to try their dinner menu. Wish we had done this sooner - all the food was amazing (the dips; fritters; halloumi; and cheese triangles were the highlight) and (as always) the service was first class!

Lou Jacks is fairly unpretentious with no particular theme to the décor. There is a hint of Greekiness in parts of the menu, and a couple of bottles of retsina lurking on the shelf behind the bar, but it’s very low-key. The vibe is pleasantly honest and straightforward. It’s just a café, with a bit of a courtyard out the back. I have no idea what the name means. I hope it is the names of the owners, but maybe it is their favourite bourbon. Who knows? The service is very efficient, we have a couple of coffee orders away before we have even had time to look at the menu. And the coffee is excellent. The menu is not one of those long ones, full of exotic middle-eastern, or south American meals, that seem to be in vogue at the moment. There is enough choice, but you don’t have to go fl

Overall Lou Jack's is a delightful space and a cafe with great people watching potential. It's got solid food options, friendly if a little too chilled staff and a well rounded bean that I believe would suit many preferences.

Delicious Brekkie. This busy cafe was full when we arrived, but we went for a wander down Kings Street and when we returned there was a table free. Our order was taken as soon as we'd had a chance to consider the menu and coffees were swiftly followed by fresh orange juice. A Big Breakfast and Peasant's Breakfast satisfied our hungriness. In the meantime lots of people came and went - many greeted warmly as regulars.
Probably good for more than just breakfast ... for more info see http://paintingthebridge.com/2014/12/03/420-lou-jacks-just-a-hint-of-greekiness/

Unfriendly. Waitress was absolutely rude. She wouldn't even give us the courtesy of looking in our direction when asked how long the babycino would take (since both the coffee and our milkshake had arrived 5 mins prior). When it did finally arrive some 10 minutes later she didn't even have the courtesy to place it on our table but slid it on the table next to ours and just said 'here'. Absolutely filthy given that I had been there regularly prior to this. (The Nerve even indicated she would nanny for me a few weeks prior to this incident). I've told everyone my experience. No excuse for rudeness. Period. Ever. I'm taking my money elsewhere.

Love Lou Jacks. Great place great people great food. Gets busy and sometimes slow but always great food and service. Have come here quite a few times.

Bitchy waitress. Eaten here a few times, great coffee and food is good but over priced. The side order of bitchy and attitude filled waitress will certainly stop us returning. No room for attitude in Newtown....We'll just eat next door.

Great first time experience. I tend to frequent the same few cafes at the southern end of King St but grudgingly visited Lou Jack's with a friend. The seating arrangements are not great (those tiny little stools are uncomfortable!) and the interior reminds of an 80s coffee lounge but I found staff to be friendly, polite and attentive. Food was fabulous and portions were generous but it did take ages to come out. The prices were quite low compared to other places along King Street. I pay more for less at my usual cafe so I have no idea what people are complaining about. $16 for the big breakfast is not excessive. I will definitely go back again to see if the food was a fluke or the usual fare but if the wait staff attempt to sit at my table whilst I'm ordering I will stab them with my fork.
Newtown Tragic
The.Best.Coffee. These guys make it the way I like it - its strong but smooth and delish, with a hint of chocolate maybe?
The staff are really friendly and get to know you by name.
I have robust discussions about whether Black Star or Lou Jacks have the best coffee in Newtown, and the jury is still out.
Sorry to hear some reviews on the food.
Hope they sort it out, as it would be a shame to see this place change.

Wow some ppl can be very hard to pls I have been goin to Lou jacks 4 10yrs n could not think of a better place to take friends or family, the atmosphere is 2nd to none the staff n management r friendly efficient n well organised which makes it a comfortable relaxed atmosphere. Last time I checked I was in 2012 not 1912 where the cost of everything goes up well atleast in the real world it does I feel the prices r more than affordable n portion sizes r sufficient. I suggest everyone to get to Lou jacks n give it a try I guarantee u won't b disappointed n will become part of a wonderful environment without much damage to ya pocket

I feel a bit sheepish - I started eating here in 1997 when it first opened. It has been consistently the best Cafe in Newtown, however in the last 12 months things have slipped - it's gone from being terrific to being OK. Coffee is still good, but the quality of the food has slippped, the service is OK but not like it used to be. Prices have also gone up, shame after all these years seeing the business build up, to see it slip so. Its OK, but the problem is there are plenty of OK Cafes in Newtown.

Nice staff and nice food. Like the location too!

Surprisingly bad.... Have been here a few times in the past and usually everything was ok. However I went recently and things had changed. The prices have become ridiculously high, which is idiotic because there are many great cafes around the area that are reasonably priced.

I made the mistake of ordering a 'lamb salad' which sadly was just a salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, capsicum) with a few chunks of lamb in it. Usually cafes are a little more creative than that (especially at the $16.50 price tag) though I guess I could have asked what was in it. The lamb tasted a bit dodgy, like sausage meat, and to add insult to injury I never got the bread which was promised on the menu. Should also mention that I felt a little queasy for the rest of the afternoon.

Good cafe. This is a great place to hangout! I love the courtyard at the back. Staff is great - friendly and very likeable. Daavid is an excellent barista and has nailed the coffee-making art. In short, i enjoy going to Lou Jacks'.

Wholesome. Lou Jacks to me is a place to eat well and relax my bones as I am there 6 days a week. I can guarantee you the food is tasty and fresh and I enjoy there coffee and service. I have no ties with the place, I just think they deserve a rap.

Lou Jacks is always so good. Service is quick and friendly and no matter what day it is the vibe is relaxed. Coffee is awesome and so is the lamb burger, but nothing beats the corn fritters. It's a must to try these, 2 corn fritters with bacon, poached egg and sweet chilli sauce, its like goodness on a plate.

Hello ... I'm hungry. This neighbourhoood cafe has been on my "Some day" mental list for ages. Today was the day.
We had time to kill before seeing a movie at the Dendy, quick lunch ... you know. Nothing quick about this place.
Young girl takes a seat at our table and takes our order. Seems common practise here as I noticed other staff doing the same. I can't stand it. Five minutes later coffee arrives, quite decent and fairly strong. 40 minutes later we're thinking "where the hell is the food?" There are only three other tables occupied and our order could have been knocked up in 10-15.
We are later informed the girl who took our order also took a lunch break and didn't pass our order to the kitchen before doing so. Lovely. Once the food arrives: average Turkey club sandwich and a rather rubbery scrambled eggs with chorizo, we pay and leave and vow to never return
